Not much wider than a the vehicles going through it, and what looks like drop-inlets on the right. If those are drop-inlets, they always pull you over towards the edge, and here you have no room.

Why would anyone pay the exorbitant turnpike fees when Interstates 70 and 80 cross the same distance for free?

If you bite your nails on a drive like that, what do you do in the dark in pouring rain or on a snow-covered mountain road? Driving in a straight tunnel is a piece of cake; stay in your lane, stay off your damn phone (you probably lose service anyway), and don't tailgate.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. The reason it is "nail biting" is that there is NO MARGIN for ERROR. Annoying music... turned it off.

That was truly a harrowing experience! I can't believe they let cars in there like that. They should paint a line down the middle of the road or something so that you know which side to stay on.

There was nothing dramatic about that. It's essentially a straight stretch of highway with no shoulder on either side. There is nothing inherently dangerous in that. Try some of the roads in Switzerland! With tens of hairpin curves and no barriers.

At ease, you’re just being claustrophobic is all. Those tunnels are getting VERY old now and no doubt in dire need of rehabilitation. The first and only time I traveled the PA Turnpike was in 2009, west to east. If memory serves, the Allegheny and Tuscarora tunnels were in decent shape but the Kittatinny and Blue Mountain Tunnels further east were both in bad shape at the time with heavy water intrusion and concrete spalling. Most likely that’s why the west bound Tuscarora Mountain tunnel here is closed - so the concrete panels can be removed and replaced, new lighting and safety system upgrades installed, etc. it’s a pretty substantial job.

Meh. If you live here it's no big deal. Those semi's have places to go too. I'm more nervous on the Schuylkill Expressway in Philadelphia.

Sorry, not that big a deal. I've done it in a class A RV towing a car when it's been down to one lane each way. If you go to Colorado, don't ever try The Million Dollar Highway unless you carry a spare set of underwear.
