Congratulations Rob!! I'm 59 and I have one particular day where I hit 3 big gardens on that day. Left at 08.30 and got home at 19.00. There's an hour each way travel in there so it's actually 8.5 hours of work less my dinner break .....and I'm goosed! My body is telling me to stop being so silly. Anyhow.........another informative vlog! Cheers bruv. Dave (North Yorks)👍👍
Rob Man, You look well, You’re smile is infectious, you are a happy chapie You are Frank Sinatra, You do it Your way, keep posting your videos, and I will keep watching, I always let the adverts on your channel play, as I know each time you post takes a lot of time and energy, It’s the least, I can do to say thank you for the entertainment you give me
I could do with a break, but always feel like I should plod on while the growing season is going. I actually feel glad when it’s going to rain all day because it gives me a reason for a rest 😅 Good luck with the new contract 👍
So proud of you Rob my friend and I agree that an hourly rate plus cost for waste and treatment is a way to go for work all year round. Keep up the great work and videos, it’s hissing it down here in Hertfordshire and weeds and grass growing massively. Keith Smiley Gardens.
Nice one Rob, sounds like the type of job that could allow you take on a bit of regular help if you decided to go down that road. Have a good weekend, Ciaran.
All my commercials are on hourly Rob. Mainly because they’re really hard to price because of the vast amount of possible tasks there are and more often than not they want something doing that neither of us have thought of. It keeps things real simple for everyone. And it is a play off of having year round continuous work. Good luck
Hi Rob just seeing this tonight. One big tip when working around cars or at windows close to the ground. Like at car dealer ships don’t use a strimmer with a cord. Get one of the cutters for the strimmer with two discs with teeth. Sorry can’t think of the name of it. But they don’t through stones up and chip cars or break windows. U chip a window and they chase u to replace it. Good luck and all the best with that nee contract.
Good luck with the new contract rob ....hope the hourly rate works for ya ....bin a nightmare cutting up north if it isnt raining during the day its raining all night grass is flying away
It's all good Rob. You've done well, and the Client's done well it's a win win. Well done Rob. I have been doing the opposite with good result on the fix price first visit front loaded and then fortnightly price visits for the mow blow and go's Really good advise from you! Thanks. A good bit of money with your contract I think you've done very well especially with Christmas just around the corner.
Well done, Rob. I do exactly the same at my commercial jobs, found it difficult to charge a set price for the season. Keep up the good work with the channel.
Good vlog mate ... there's always good and bad in both domestic or commercial and only time tells. Got to agree with the weather what a mare at the minute 🙈
Well done Rob. Hello from Holy Island, where I'm on my hols. Funny how we all move about for a change of scenery for our holidays. I find the hourly rate works well on my all day jobs - too varied to price, as you say. I've found an informal flexi-system is efficient. I may stay a half hour or more late some weeks, but knock the same amount off when it suits me and the job allows.
Nice one👍 perfect for dropping in on wet days too? generally don't get the...its too wet isn't it from commercials. As long as it's done and tidy they're happy 👌
Well done Rob- great news! A bit of friendly advice, and this may not work for others, but you've pretty much stated you'll do a day, so i would state your price but as a 'visit' rather than break it down to the hour or even to a day rate. That way, rain or shine, you'll be there but how long you are there, is down to you. That way, if it rains- you show up and do what you can and if you're likely to create a mess etc, you go home but charge your 'visit' price. The following week you're likely to have more work to deal with so it all balances out. As long as the job gets done and you do all that you say you will- it doesn't matter how long you're there. You could upgrade to a ride on and cut the grass in half the time- providing the same service and for the same money. All this comes with experience. Either way, you're doing incredibly well and should be proud of where you've got your self to! All the best
Bagged my first commercial this year. I'm hoping I get to keep onit into next year as it has helped me massively invest. I thought I would have no chance after dealing with rams etc etc. I think it's the way forward commercial. Best of luck, pal. 👍🏼
Absolutely chuffed for you Rob and sincerely hope it works out for you, but do keep a level head and try not to get too excited about it, keep focused on what you've quoted for and what you're doing, it's very very easy in big contracts to concentrate on certain area's or allow the customer to divert you onto what THEY consider most important which means you fall behind on other area's. You may have a great customers right there, but commercial contracts usually look for value for money, so do some residential mind you, but it's easier to tell Mrs Smith to jog on for a £25 fortnightly grass cut than a large commercial contract. I'm sure you've done your due diligence and sincerely hope this works out for you and as you probably already have done, expect the little niggles, they will come, if you can see them through you will have a tidy day's work and hopefully keep the customer happy long enough to build up that good relationship. All best Rob.
Pricing Commercial work is the hardest thing in the trade without question, get it even slightly wrong and you can go bust so don’t blame you taking on the hourly rate. I found once I had a big site to look after made it much easier for me to work out how to price other sites, nothing beats experience
Due to the variety of tasks it is difficult to settle on a hourly rate for commercial work isn't it? I know too many people started on hourly rate and ended up hating the work, and time drags on and on. But for commercial I think you are right. But perhaps hourly rates need to differ depending on tasks/tools/effort required.
Sorry to hear of your negative commentator Rob, watching your videos I’m sure anyone who knows you either personally or on your channel will be fully aware of your professionalism and commitment to this great business. You know what a wise man once said? “Social media has just created an outlet for any coward to make comments without the associated smack in the mouth” - Mike Tyson, so true!! Chin up Rob 👍
I've invented( just in my head) a new mower - designed for wet grass- its a rotary with a super powerful leaf blower type system on the front to blow the water off at high speed. Alternatively a roller brush system. Also as a back up, either a spinning paddle system(same speed as blades) in the discharge chute to assist grass into the box. Either that or a paddle/flap🤪that would at intervals, clear the chute. I haven't bothered patenting these ideas as we all need a wet cut mower 😁🏋️💪🚣

An absolutely brilliant job to be able to take on, with a bit of luck you might be able to find plenty of winter work there too. Just wondered why you wouldn’t aim for a day rate? Or if the 7 hours hourly is effectively a day rate for you?
Great video Rob. Did you think about an annual price for the work.? Was speaking to one of my clients recently and he pays €6000 a year to a contractor to maintain the gardens of a very large rental property he owns. Everything included. At least you wouldn't be clock watching then. Just a thought. Keep up the great content and best of luck on the new work. 👍
Hey Rob. What fuel do you use in your machines? Do you try to use ethanol free or just the standard E10 or E5 fuel we get here in the UK? Do you use any fuel stabilisers etc...? Love your videos, really learnt a lot from them.
I ask because ive just left the Navy myself after being a clearence diver and im trying to start self employed gardening work have been following your channel.
Rain doesn't describe it, just so sick of it, and then everything grows. I am in north Yorkshire. Hoping this week is better. Congrats on the commercial contract, and that idiot from Stoke on Trent will get what's coming to him!
Just watched ur Negative Google Comment vid….that bloke is a proper nob and yes I definitely believe in karma so he’ll get what he deserves….on a bit of a positive, whenever I see that a trades person has replied to a negative comment it makes me think that they care about their business and customers and it wouldn’t put me off hiring them, don’t let the muppets get u down Rob, I’d hire u in a heartbeat 👍
Take my hat off to ya! Top man. Well done on getting the contract. Although 7hr days is a big ask for men of our age. But being ex military your made of far stronger stuff than me so you'll smash it I'm sure. One thing you've said you wouldn't get in the past but now may need looking at again is a ride on for such a large area to cut? Also, give some thought to a plan B. If ever you can't make the commitment through illness etc. Just in case..... All the best. Take care Rob. 👍
The terrain doesn’t lend itself to a ride on. If it all goes well I will need to invest in a 21 inch mulching mower. Or a 21 inch mower that has mulching capability. Maybe a Weibang? Any advice is appreciated. All the best Gary.
My Weibang is great. I love it. But it is heavy. Although being shaft drive not belt driven it will go through anything. With the high lift blade it's also fantastic in the wet. But the weight of the machine can't be ignored. My advice. Come the time check the market and see what's out there. But for me shaft drive is a game changer. All the best 👍
Try a Toro Timemaster... I do mainly commercial work. Especially as you're able to do weekly cuts it will be so easy. I add the roller attachment so it leaves a stripe! Easy to get in the back of your van, fast and a good price. Other gardeners I know are now using them.
Just to add... mine takes a battering as I mulch hedge trimmings and all sorts- and it has the ability to side discharge if you really need to! I've never really had any problems other than the usual wear and tare! I even use it on smaller residential lawns and private properties- it's pretty much a good all rounder and the one mower I generally carry! We all have our go to curry... this will be yours 😂👍
My guess is £35 an hour x 7 hours. You needn't be drawn on that Rob as its none of my business im just having a punt at that pal. Could be a great gig? The only thing i would say is 2500sqm is how much weight in clippings could that be? And would would that cost in disposal. Im a very green newbie and so please accept this enquiry from someone who doesn't know. Cheers.

Evening Rob, your getting too good, we have all experienced this bad review sting, well I have anyway. I have had people review my business who I haven’t worked for or know, but they lie and leave a bad review. I can only surmise that they believe that it may improve their business by doing this ? I get angry, but it doesn’t help, I now try and obtain positive reviews from those who I help, or when clients are pleased with a certain job, I ask for a favour/review . It works , Google have recently informed me that the amount of reviews that I have , has a really positive effect on my business page and the amount of enquiries that I now receive.
Rob, smile , have your glass of wine , don’t let the buggers get you down. Mark
Thanks Mark. Good luck with your business.
