- My pal George from Dawn Organics and I had a great little chat about his experience starting and running his handmade soap business in Australia. George and I were both receiving a number of questions and requests from our audience on this subject (Bhoop, this is for you!), so we thought we'd get together via Zoom and share what we know.

This was so interesting Elly, your interview skills and engaging personality allowed George the opportunity to go into great detail in telling his story on how he came about his journey into soap making. Most of us don't realise the blood sweat and tears involved in developing and then getting an excellent product onto the shelves while staying true to your beliefs and values of being kind to our planet. I have found my worst problems with eczema are caused by diet. I try to stay away from milk/ and sugar after eliminating the majority of the foods groups. By eliminating and bringing things back, I learned what was causing most of my issues. The really bad part about eczema is you can’t live without food and you also need to keep skin clean. So topical soaps and lotions are a must, not only for cleaning but dryness relief. I have been a tinkerer with products because I was born with serious eczema. I found fairly cheap but virgin products work the best for my skin. I am so glad there are people that do this to help others. Drs are really less than helpful. They prefer to make money selling a pill than helping you figure out what causes the problem in the first place. God Bless you both! Thank you for the info!

I love watching your video's, I'm planning to make my own soap rather than to buy in the market... As people here in the Philippines are concious about the complexion. I wish you can film formula soap for whitening . Thank you and looking forward..
With labeling, you must include everything on the label that you put into your product, in order of most ingredient to least. If you are only planning on selling in Australia, then you can use common names (coconut oil) or the INCI name (Caprylic/capric triglyceride), but if you plan to export, many places especially in Europe will only accept INCI names on labels.

I went on his UA-cam channel and checked out some of his recipes and I’ve noticed George frequently used vitamin E, grapefruit seeds’ extract and sodium lactate. I would like to know your thought on those ingredients please. Keep up the good work!😊
Hi, thanks Loredana. I don't use those ingredients because I don't think they are necessary for my homemade soaps for home use. I like to keep my recipes quite simple :)

Now I know there are two people now in soap here in Aus with such amazing integrity, what a wonderful thing this video was to open listen and watch. Honesty is such an important characteristic and you both have it in abundance. You both shared so much with us so freely, I for one am so grateful. This year I’ll be 77 yrs, I am learning to grow veggies in pots thanks to you tube channels I found some gardening people whom I learn from, and now thanks to you I am now learning to make soap for my hubby and me, three types are sitting to cure can’t wait to use it. Clearly it is all for the happiness it brings me and not to sell but maybe in future to share with family.. Yes post war we only seemed in my memory to have the choice of Lifebuoy soap, Palmolive soap and Coal Tar soap. Just like real toilet paper so hard to find. These soaps being produced today are just luxurious and a joy to look at. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to two very special people Elly and George whom I will check out his channel.

Hi, Elly! Not sure if you still follow fresh comments on this video. I followed your recipe for pure Castile soap but the end result were my soaps formed some sort of curdling right at the surface after being in the mould for 48 hours. The soap facing inside the mould, however, came out perfect. How do I get my Castile soaps to be smooth on both sides? Right after pouring, I immediately covered it with another cardboard and wrapped them in towels. I’m based in Malaysia and our weather is quite similar. Humid-hot most of the times. Aside from the aesthetics of the soap, it cured just fine. Hope you see this and thank you so much for existing!

Thanks Roger, gee there are so many options. I would recommend natural clays and soap colourants, and there are many suppliers in Australia. You will probably have some options in Tassie if you google soap supplies or soap colourants. Good luck!

This is a wonderful interview/chat. I would like to speak on the registration of ones company. To do the right thing is wonderful. Producers should keep that in mind. As far as government registration, it’s another tax and interference. Example, black soap is a very natural soap, it isn’t pretty, however it is great for skin and hair. Now, in the hands of mass producing companies, it’s mixed with other questionable ingredients. It is NOT the same. Large companies aren’t looking out for consumers, and they, large companies have loopholes, while fattening their pockets. It isn’t fair.
Registration is another tax, and a burden for cottage industries

There are many ways to do that, You can google that question for the details :)
I do think that there’s a lot of individual business entrepreneurs who might be in the soap industry or something similar to it who are quite reluctant to divulge all the information about their ingredients because there’s a lot of unsavory individuals out here that will basically hijack your recipes and make them for themselves and sell them as if they were their own creation and I know that we are privy to that sort of thing happening in this day and age it just seems to be much more pronounced
A lot of people are looking to get rich quick so as far as the chemicals are concerned
there are only certain chemicals required in order to make a base soap and then everything additional to that as your own creation or followed by someone else’s recipe however with that said a lot of the ingredients are considered GRAS generally recognize it safe and occasionally you’ll have a person who might have an unpleasant response to certain ingredients
I do personally feel
That in this same age the quality of the ingredients are most important and I don’t really think people should be compromising for the sake of aesthetics
Honestly moving forward peoples immune system‘s have become so reactive because they’re dealing with an overload of toxicity it isn’t so much that they’re actually allergic to a certain ingredient because that ingredient and where it comes from is not disclosed nor is the composition of that ingredients so for example if you’re using genetically modified botanicals which were grown with pesticides it is not created equally with someone who is not using those ingredients
So as much as you disclose to the customer or anyone else for that matter those tidbits are not disclosed and it can make all the world of difference because perhaps someone is not allergic to let’s say olive oil unless it’s not 100% olive oil perhaps it’s genetically modified or perhaps it’s been corrupted with other ingredients in order for the olive oil industry to make a ton of money by saving money and using partially olive oil and then a bunch of other oils that people find themselves reactive to
I hope you understand where I’m going with us but I really really really encourage every person who is making personal products that will touch a persons skin to have the highest integrity and the supreme ingredients which are not in any shape way or form corrupted by something that they should not be it isn’t just because of necessity it is because of having a very high standard for what you were producing.
I have been watching soapmaking videos for a very long time several years actually and I am living in my car I live in North Carolina in the United States. I have been on a botanical journey for many years prior I found great passion and purpose in learning all that I could and of course you can only obtain so much information without forgetting so I have to revisit a lot. With that said, nutrition was annexed and then there were very similar things that were of interest to me but not nearly as much as those two things and that is my niche. Little did I know that I was laying a foundation for life I wasn’t expecting to have and that was partly living in my car and using my car as a vehicle as well as a residence and also a way to generate resources to be able to acquire the things that were necessary but not a place to live because this is not the right medium to be self-sufficient the money goes really back into the vehicle. I don’t think people understand just how much money a gig worker spends and if they’re not paying attention they won’t realize early enough that it isn’t a lucrative way to support themselves
I find it very soothing and very relaxing and very therapeutic to watch the soap making process and yes I do love the cutting I think that that is probably the icing on the cake so to speak
It’s very satisfying now if you look at any of these ASMR channels it doesn’t matter what they’re doing but they are doing something and it’s usually in silence and it is very therapeutic for people who have been suffering with depression and anxiety possibly post traumatic stress disorder. I myself had post traumatic stress disorder after being in a very difficult relationship for 2 1/2 years or at the end there was this grand finale we went out of town on a business trip it was his company his colleagues of 30 years and not only did we manage to eradicate his prostate cancer he lost 70 pounds he had a makeover his wardrobe was completely different so was his hair and he looked the best he’s ever looked in all the time he’s individuals knew him and according to him he looked the best he ever looked in his entire life. Wonderful. So there was some type of cataclysmic mental meltdown on his behalf the night prior to returning to the state that we lived in and we lived in the same house together of course it was his rental not mine. This man tormented me across several state lines at high speeds driving a radically raging and screaming violently how much he couldn’t stand looking at me and he wanted nothing more than to put my face through the windshield. It’s really a frightening experience I pretty much cried for 22 hours straight. So when we got back here my eyes were swollen shut and I was happy that that was over but now a new struggle began and that was all that I mentioned above. All of this is post my interests in botanicals and nutrition. And all of that with having previously been signed up for rideshare before the discard because yes he was a narcissist… Would come in as an instrumental bit of information for the individuals who would come in contact with me during my daily work.
I truly love soap making and I’ve never made one batch. However what I can connect to that and my younger years like when I was in my 20s because I’m now 53, is a love for kitchen chemistry. I would dabble and adapt pretty much anything and everything kind of like you mentioned with your bread making. I’m not afraid to experiment and of course the mother of invention is necessity. My struggle is war that I was essentially always financially strapped and out of that I would have to learn how to stretch my cleaning supplies. The whole nutrition and focus on the naturopathic way of healing an individuals body heal as dealing with certain illness or disease I think was really just a very natural progression I didn’t really understand the connection but it is and I think soapmaking for me as the next tier
The way that we care for ourselves and the fact that most people don’t actually take that into consideration it’s so important it’s what you put on your skin as what you’re breathing as what you’re wearing it is what you were eating it is what you were watching and listening to all of these things make a huge difference in your over all happiness
So I love your channel and I just recently subscribed so I’m very new here but I just find that you’re so very good at it and you have this very soothing way of communicating the information that you are so gracious to give to your watchers I want to take a second to say thank you so much
Hi elly, I have one question to you and also for viewers, can you tell me is it sodium hydroxide lye is really good for bathing and also skin? Is lye soap safe for skin?
Cause many general soaps like cinthol ingredients are different example , sodium palmet, sodium palm kernelate, triclocarban, titanium dioxide, disodium EDTA, BHT, CITRIC ACID, CI4700, CI61565, PLEASE explain ao viewers having right information about soap
Thanks, that's a far bigger question than I am able to answer fully here. Everyone must do their own research on this and make their own decisions. Personally I find my simple sodium hydroxide soaps are a lovely and they agree with my skin very well.
All soaps must be made with lye. Otherwise it isn't soap. Even Melt & Pour soaps are made using lye.

Hi ....mam can you please help me with one thing ....I want to learn how to balance pH level of a soap....if we are making soap at home with melt n pour soap base .....I want the pH level to become 5 or 6 ....is it possible ???
I don't make melt and pour soap, but the soaps I make are all about 8-9 pH. Soap is a naturally alkaline product.

I did it the same way. I started with a complicated recipe. I told the family to leave the house. I did it in the garage. I burned the goats milk and had to re do it. A total disaster. Lol
