Thank you for doing this. I love this song so much. I truly believe it's one of the best pieces of music that has ever been written, up there with Mozart's Requiem and Vivaldi's Seasons. I'm a scientist, the themes in this work just really speak to me, and I honestly cannot count how many times I've teared up at the "We Were Here" screams. To me, they represent something truly existential. They are humanity screaming towards the heavens, we just tiny hot embers that will fade away, almost insignificant on the grand scheme of things, but yet here we stand...we will die, our flames will go out, we will be forgotten, but we were here, and we must live life to the fullest and savor our few decades in the sun.
We Astrophysicists have a tendency to be reminded of these big existential questions on a daily basis, so having a song that touches on that, while also talking about our connection to the Universe, just makes it special. "We are one, we are a Universe."

Absolute masterpiece. Say what you will about Richard Dawkins, but his quotes fit so beautifully here. And he speaks them great too. He even did a few live appearances with Nightwish!
For some reason I'm always getting Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens mixed up. Maybe it's because they have similar sounding names and both are hardcore atheists.
From what I understand, Tuomas got Dawkins to read out parts of his books, but they fit it to the song and the story they were telling. Dawkins was on stage reading it live at Wembley. Absolutely amazing and Dawkins loved it!
We were here! Such a simple, yet profound statement! I was not at this particular concert, but I have seen it live. Screaming "WE WERE HERE" at the end of the song was rather special! But imagine this, if you will: Our civilization is somehow wiped out by a catastrophe like a meteor, or whatever. Only a few survive. Civilization has to restart. Then, in 10.000 years some archeologists dig up a hard drive with this song on it. What a statement that would be!
Kelly I knew you were going to get this , and you did!!! I turned to mush with you! Still wiping away the tears. Thank you for sharing your own poetry!! I think I'm a little bit in love with someone who connects with the music just like I do!!
That's definitely sweet to feel it as I did. As I've said in previous comments I have a connection in a poetical sense. We cannot allow the world to miss out on how a universal language touches the heart and spirit. This is our moment....."We are here"....thank YOU for sharing.
„There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.“ - Charles Darwin
“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?” ~ Richard Dawkins
@@n5iln That for me is the most profound part of this. Ofc the music and the lyrics is just exceptional but that just sums it all up. We whine and fear death when we should celebrate it. Mortality means we lived! There's a scene in Troy of all movies when Achilles, played by Brad Pitt says "The Gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now." I don't subscribe to any gods but the sentiment of the statement is the same.
Your reactions are so genuine and wholesome. Thank you for your honesty and passion, and keep watching more Nightwish videos! If you liked the ones you've seen I can garantee you, the rest can never disappoint! Tuomas is really good at making masterpieces ;)
The first time I saw this Nightwish concert video it really hit me in the feels. Gets me every time I see the 'We Were Here' part. Think your poem at the start of this reaction was a good fit too; thanks for that x
The "We were here!!!!" is one of the most powerful, emotional things I've ever, ever seen. A defiant cry to the void, saying "You can't take that from us....WE WERE HERE!"
@@jeffk1482 It gets me in the same way man, there are so many little details in this song, it truly is a masterpiece. To me it all says, we should appreciate the time we have. That whole section after the primal stage where they're grunting like apes, notice how all the imagery while they're singing about humans is all fire and destruction, but then when it slows down again (you can hear this better on the album version), there's some tribal music, baroque music, there's a Gregorian chant, a harpsichord all these different eras of music to say 'look at what we've accomplished too'. We're all here by an absolutely minute piece of chance. But when it's all over, we were here :) So much of Nightwish's music is littered with loads of amazing little details like this, some of it barely noticeable like in some songs Tuomas sort of inverts the arrangement toward the end or he'll make every chorus different in some way. I love em!
@@jeffk1482 If you don't mind a bit of a read there's a really cool essay here about how Tuomas uses emotions & colors in his songs, it's really interesting jyx.jyu.fi/bitstream/handle/123456789/41589/Charris%20Efthimiou%20-%20Aspects%20Of%20Emotion%20And%20Construction%20In%20The%20Music%20Of%20Nightwish.pdf;sequence=1

Proper response and emotion after one grand masterpiece. I saw them in person over a year ago and they closed the concert with this song. I along with most of the audience left with pride and tears. If you can you must see them in concert. They are just as magnificent live as on an album.
@@KellyDeaconKDzJOY My daughter who went with me summed it up the best...."this is not just a concert...it is an experience" We had VIP tickets and was just about front row center in a small venue. I will never forget it.
Thanks Kelly, it's wonderful to watch an adult react to this song. Far too many reactors just headbang through the song without paying attention to the words. If you haven't done so, I strongly suggest that you get the lyrics and follow the song again with them, but frankly, I think you got the gist of it perfectly. Anyway, wonderful job.
There’s just something glorious about this song, especially towards the end with the entire crowd screaming defiance to the universe “We Were Here!”. And your poetry so often mirrors these Nightwish songs in such a profound way. It’s no wonder you have fallen in love with this band, you and Tuomas seem to share a soul. XD
Thank you, Kelly, for your lovely poem again and this wonderful reaction of yours! It really reached you and touched your heart too. I was there then and I feel so happy for the rest of my life! I was so close to not to buy a ticket to that concert because I had seen them already two years earlier in my hometown too: Tampere, Sauna Open Air Festival and I would've had something else to go at the same time. Luckily I went there! Pure magic the whole concert. I knew you will be fascinated from this song. This man, Tuomas... I think he's a wizard who plays with our emotions. I always start to weep when Floor sings those words "We were here!" and then this orchestral music at the end is so damn beautiful and noble... my eyes always turns to a waterfalls! Such a beautiful message in this song too: remember to cherish your life, you have been so damn lucky.
Weirdly, that part in the end reminded me of the ending scene in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with all those people standing on the plateau. This music would fit that scene, as well. It is still extremely impressive how they synchronized everything. They bow to the audience just as the music reaches its highest point. :-)
Kelly, you are the perfect person for a 'reaction' to this Nightwish experience. Your tears are witness to the masterpiece that is 'The Greatest Show on Earth' I cannot think of anyone who would be capable of writing/performing such an eye opening essay on the meaning of life on Earth, as Tuomas Holopainen.
Oh Kelly. You made me cry..I adore your open-hearted and genuine emotion here. You weren't to know, but this song is broken down into movements, with the first being '4.6'. You instinctively knew that the fireworks were a visual analogy to the chaos of the planets forming. I just wanted to mention that following the crescendo and finale of the 'We Were Here' section, the visuals take over, and as we listen to Dawkins and watch the band take their bow, the music seems to be less prominent. And yet, the mix of strings and horns are magnificent. Moving on Kelly, before you react to 'The Poet and the Pendulum' you must do some research on the motivations and emotions behind the song. Only after you have done this will the true impact of Tuomas' genius hit you. Thank you so much for being in our lives. God Bless
Thank you so much Kevin for your input here. I didn't know much about this song but only heard people talk about it thru comments. Yes.....im doing the background into poet&pendulum before I experience it. Everyone has warned me to have tissues ready. I have not had any other music do this to me. It's the poetry in motion.....my heart sees and hears it.
@@KellyDeaconKDzJOY It is so brilliantly composed and put together that the song (TPoatP) can move you even without knowing anything, at all. Although, there are nuances that are not so apparent without prior knowledge that is why it is good to research it beforehand.
Haha such a nice way to wake up to this beautiful day with some onions... What a ride that was and thank you so much for sharing this ride with all of us.
It is so gratifying to see another soul who "gets it". I try to share this music with others but they just don't see it. I am moved to my depths when I hear this. It is sublime.
This is such an amazing masterpiece I can just listen to it over and over again, I loved your reaction it was so pure you really got the meaning of it very quick, I bet you are going to listen to it a lot more after discovering it. Cheers have a nice weekend!
Thank you Renske. All we have to do is hear with an open mind.......be willing to embrace what is possible and then the story will be told. I cannot wait to hear it again and again
The narrator is Richard Dawkins, a British evolutionary scientist. If you watch the Wembley version they actually have him come on stage. I never get tired of this piece :)
Not a bad little song is it! 😀 Tuomas is a genius, it took me a good few listens until I understood this song. You seemed to get it straight away. I think this will be your favourite Nightwish song even more than The Poet and the Pendulum when you listen to that. Lovely to see your reaction to this anyway, thank you 🤘
I have not heard poet and pendulum yet. I need to take in as much as possible including events so I can get into Tuomas' mind as I unravel his reasons. I heard from commenters that poet has, chapters.
The album version of Song Of Myself ends with an incredible poem read by friends and family of the band, and set to an absolutely beautiful tune. I think you'll love it.
those onions!! excellent reaction as always you just got in my top 4 for fav reactors and thank you for not cutting it short most cut it when they see the credits and miss the last part
And this is such an honour to be here now. Life is sweeter because of the connection of something we feel.....as one. No other song has ever done this for me. It's not a song tho......its greater than a song. Inspiring...gives me hope for greater tomorrows. Sounds sentimental but I believe we need to dig into the deeper reasons, get into the heart and mind and understand that life is poetry.

Thank you very much, nice and enjoyable reaction ! This is one of my favorites from Nightwish. This Tampere show in 2015 was also 20 years anniversary show. So they made it little bigger show... I was not at this particular concert, but I have seen it live.
Screaming "WE WERE HERE" at the end of the song was rather special!
But imagine this, if you will:
Our civilization is somehow wiped out by a catastrophe like a meteor, or whatever.
Only a few survive.
Civilization has to restart.
Then, in 10.000 years some archeologists dig up a hard drive with this song on it.
What a statement that would be!
True!👍👍👍
They won't speak English... 😆
It won't take a meteor. We did it, and it's irreversible. Enjoy the next 7 to 10 years.

It's so beautiful seeing someone truly enjoying the music. Thank you.
„There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having
been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst
this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity,
from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most
wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.“
- Charles Darwin
The Greatest Show on Earth. In a nutshell.
In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?”
~ Richard Dawkins
@@n5iln That for me is the most profound part of this. Ofc the music and the lyrics is just exceptional but that just sums it all up. We whine and fear death when we should celebrate it. Mortality means we lived!
There's a scene in Troy of all movies when Achilles, played by Brad Pitt says "The Gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now."
I don't subscribe to any gods but the sentiment of the statement is the same.
Your reactions are so genuine and wholesome. Thank you for your honesty and passion, and keep watching more Nightwish videos! If you liked the ones you've seen I can garantee you, the rest can never disappoint!
Tuomas is really good at making masterpieces ;)
I've seen this live, twice. Very powerful
Omg, so jealous!
I love em!
@@SynphamyMusic I was going to reply at length too; there's *so* much to cover here. However, I've decided on the short version: HELLZ YES!
The Story of evolution and Mandkind completely in one Song with the most important message at the end....the ultimate masterpiece!.....in fact, even the Studio Version is the longest Song they have ever written....anyone recognized "THE ABYSS" O.S.T. tunes at the Beginning ?
Originally the song was 40 minutes long but they cut to about 20 minutes when they put it on the album. 😊😊
@@ronaldboers8061 I've heard Tuomas saying, that the first written version was around 90 min long...

Proper response and emotion after one grand masterpiece. I saw them in person over a year ago and they closed the concert with this song. I along with most of the audience left with pride and tears. If you can you must see them in concert. They are just as magnificent live as on an album.
Awe........such a feeling that must have been!!

Such A Beautiful Soul You Have, We all Love You Kelly!
Kelly got it. Love it when that happens. Beautiful reaction. Thanks Kelly.
Thanks for being a "joy rider" and sharing the journey too!
It is so gratifying to see another soul who "gets it". I try to share this music with others but they just don't see it. I am moved to my depths when I hear this. It is sublime.
We've watched this Tampere show so many times that my dog knows "kiitos" and we use it with her instead of saying "thank you"
And as now, they are getting together their new album!! Can't wait!!
Yay!!
Now you have done it. So nice. Thanks Kelly!!
You are such a wonderful person! I love your reaction and your understanding of the song!!!! Don't stop!
Hello from Ukraine)
Welcome Ukraine! Happy to have you here. I'm in awe of their poetry in music. Thank you for your kind comment.
The album version of Song Of Myself ends with an incredible poem read by friends and family of the band, and set to an absolutely beautiful tune. I think you'll love it.
Yup. This. There's also a video out there that has the poem from the album version appended onto the Wacken live performance. I like that one.
those onions!!
excellent reaction as always
you just got in my top 4 for fav reactors
and thank you for not cutting it short
most cut it when they see the credits and miss the last part
And this is such an honour to be here now. Life is sweeter because of the connection of something we feel.....as one. No other song has ever done this for me. It's not a song tho......its greater than a song. Inspiring...gives me hope for greater tomorrows. Sounds sentimental but I believe we need to dig into the deeper reasons, get into the heart and mind and understand that life is poetry.
And thank you for being here..... it's an honor to be in your top 4. 😊🎵

What a ride. Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel too. If I could go back in time and see any NW concert of my choice, this would be the one I'd choose. From the first time I watched it, I've loved it. There's just something magical about the whole show. They didn't have 82,000 people like Wacken, but the combination of having the EFMB songs and the home crowd just makes it special. Loved it Kelly and really glad you did too!🤘👍💯
Toumas, simply put, is a bloody genius. And each band member is purely perfect for forming the most exquisite vehicle to deliver us his genius.
I appreciate this “reactor” as much as the band!

This is real art! Whole evolution in one song!
Watching this in bed on a lazy afternoon I was in tears too by the end. It's amazing what Tuomas can create when he gets his hands on a full orchestra.

This is one of my favorites from Nightwish. This Tampere show in 2015 was also 20 years anniversary show. So they made it little bigger show...
BTW, did you notice, when band was firstly greeting audience, then turned away from audience (for photo) and then turned back to audience - they lift hands up and Marco turned his hands so that he was pointing to Tuomas !!! Like this is THE MAN who created this to you ! If you did not saw this, look again that part. Very nice from Marco !
