- Hello designers and welcome to another Affinity Designer tutorial, in todays video you will learn how to use the measure tool get exact real life measurements. I will show you how to add a drawing scale to a photo of a room so you can understand the true dimensions of the space you are working with. This allows you to have an understanding of what size artwork you want to make in the given space ( an art gallery / a living room).
I will also show you how to measure between objects and much more.
The main aim of this tutorial is to get you familiar with using the many different tools Affinity has to offer, along with using Shortcuts and techniques of design.
It’s beginner friendly and I’ll take it slowly and teach you step by step so you can follow along with me.
Affinity Designer V2 (2.5) Used in this tutorial.
I now have a SUPER THANKS button!!! So if you feel like buying me a coffee as a thank you, tap away!

NOTE: I'm Using a MAC, so any shortcuts I mention may be different for WINDOWS USERS. See the below for the WINDOWS:

Mac Shift key = Windows Shift key
Mac Alt key = Windows Alt key

Terrific as ever. Your precise detailed presentation in such a compact format is always my goto when I need help. I also noticed the odd mic quality here and your previous video.... get well soon 😃
Thank you Robert! Yeah I thought its better to make a tutorial with a bad mic than no mic at all. Won't be long before my Rode mic is back
You are a genius!! Thanks for this!!
Thank you so much
Been waiting for this 1 thanks
Cheers! its actually a very useful tool
@@ArtistWright It definetly is
Very useful, thank you as alwys!

Gracias me salvaste !!!
De nada
Great tutorial!!!!!!
Thank you 🙏
Very cool! Thanks.
Cheers 👍
Super helpful, tanks
Great to hear !
Hello and thank you very much for the interesting instructions. As english is not my mother tongue, it is a bit fast.
But one question: I would like to be able to show and print the dimension lines.
Which tool can I use to do this?
There is no way I know currently do that easily. You would have to use the pen tool and if you wanted add arrowheads from the stroke panel. Then use the artistic text tool for the numbers
@@ArtistWright Yes that's what I finally made. Thank you for the quick answer
My only criticism is 300dpi for a size this large, unless you're going to be viewing for a foot or less away you in do it at 100-120dpi
Thanks for the input!
Ty.😊
My pleasure
I know this is going to sound bazar, but I'm learning to draft my own clothes and instead of a cad program, which I don't own or use as I'm on an iPad, I'm trying to do it the in designer the hard way (typical). Can I use the measuring tool to measure circles.
Yes you can but I'm not sure if you are referring to a photo of a circle or a design you are making. Use the transform tool to see the measurements of vector items. You can draw a circle to any size you want. You can change the measurement type from cm to inches etc
@@ArtistWright ty
Is there a option to make the dimensions stay?
Not for them to stay on screen. I actually really need that
@@ArtistWright We all need that badly together with the curve dimensions. :)
How can you change the units of measure in the measure tool? Most of the world isn't on the Imperial system. How about metric?
Go to document setup and choose your measurement type. If you are using the move tool you will see that option in the context tool bar
@@ArtistWright Thank you!
@David.J.Vranicar no worries
so what's the difference between this and PS?
Affinity Designer is more akin to illustrator rather than PS. In Affinity you can work in vector and raster. Photoshop is just for raster images (just like Affinity photo)
This is not a ransomware that steals your work to replace you.
@@ytskt ai?
How do you keep the measurements on the screen? I want to use them as a reference while I work but every time I measure something and switch tools the reference just dissapears
You can't unfortunately, I really hope they add some more functionality to it as it's very much needed
@@ArtistWright thanks man! I've been hard studying Affinity Designer for a couple days because i want to leave Adobe. It's always hard to learn new tools but I'll get there eventually, thanks to creators such as yourself
@@Tomasrrb if you haven't already checked out my Affinity Designer: the comprehensive guide . Definitely do that
What has happened to your microphone? Previous videos had better audio
I'm currently traveling and forgot my good mic, so am having to record with a cheap one. Won't be long until I have the good mic back.
@@ArtistWright No problem
I'd love to watch your videos if I didn't have to sit through 2 adverts that don't interest me at all!
Terry, you are getting free information about design, watching a few ads is your payment
