Commander Colin Maud, Beachmaster, D-Day 1944 - The Longest Day - 1/35 WW2 Diorama

- My first project of 2024 is complete and its one that I've wanted to do for a long time as its a scene from my favourite WW2 movie 'The Longest Day' depicting Commander Colin Maud who was a Beachmaster on D-Day,
The movie has a few inaccuracies in that the scene is set on Sword Beach but Commander Maud was actually the Beachmaster on Juno Beach. He was also given the temporary rank of Captain for the D-Day landings, hence his shoulder boards are not those of a Commander. Maud's real dog 'Winston' was a German Shepard and not a Bulldog, I've read that the directors changed the dog as there is a German Shepard in a another scene and they didn't want two dogs the same to confuse the viewer. Maud was also a technical advisor for the movie and the shillelagh wielded by actor Kenneth More in the movie is actually Mauds own.
Anyway, some of you have noticed that the Universal Carrier has been sat on my shelves for a few years and here it is finally used in a diorama 👍

1/35 Universal Carrier - Tamiya
Figures used:
1/35 Commander Colin Maud and Winston by Scale Model Accessories (this kit is discontinued but I was lucky enough to pick one up on Ebay a few years ago)
Other figures are a mish mash of Tamiya, Bronco, Gecko and Dragon figures with some having resin heads and re-posed limbs
Cricut Digital Cutting Machine - the machine featured is the Cricut Joy but please note that it has been modified to cut Tamiya Masking Sheets. Out of the box this machine will cut right through the masking sheet and requires a small tweak to the cutting blade mounting.

That was a piece of fine work Ian, and from one of my all time favourite flicks and all time favourites scenes in that flick.
Give it a good bash!
Works on people too ;)
Nicely done dude!
Thanks MrC......have been wanting to do it for a while....and now its done, lol
Accurate to the film, but Maud's actually dog was a German Shepherd. They changed it in the film because the Normandy commander had a Shepherd and they didn't want him to have the same dog, so they switched it to a proper British Bulldog.
I meant to say the German Commander at Omaha beach, Maj. Pluskat. His dog was a German Shepherd.
Nicely done! Looks like you literally took a film frame from the movie a brought it to life. Your figure painting was awesome. Nice job!
Outstanding diorama. A very nice tribute to Commander Maud.
Wonderful, Ian. You portrayed the scene on the beach from "The Longest Day" with Commander Colin Maud perfectly.
Great diorama!! Best wishes, Joachim
The longest day is one of my favourite movies since I was a kid, and your diorama is very close to the movie layout itself. From a modeling point of view I like very much the result. Particularly I find very hard to get a realistic sand beach result and yours is quite good.
That is one of hell of a Dio Ian! Its one of my favorite scenes in the Longest Day with Beachmaster Maud and you have done him and his staff great justice with you work!
"Aye, and I like his dog..."
That came out really cool! The multiple variations in the beach painting didn’t make sense until the reveal at the end and the shading and colors pop out.
Well the wait was certainly worth it !!! Excellent work Ian as always love every aspect of it 👌🏻👍🏻
The shelves are empty 😉
Mmmm so the Sturmtiger is next then 🤔?
I really like the instructions for Maud looks like it's someone's project draft filled with relevant notes rather than usual computerized schematic
Its a pretty old figure now so it may have been released in 'pre-computer' days👍
@@CWModelling the good ol' days of real craftsmanship
@@michaela3274 I had a look at the instructions......they're dated 1991, so hand drawn and photocopied👍
@@CWModelling 1991.... 🤔my guess was mid 1950's. But still, it looks so much better than the instructions you get with kits today😃
OUTSTANDING..TRULY OUTSTANDING. Rarely does anyone get to witness art being created in front of them...Mind blowing excellence. Ian.. Benchmark just went stratospheric. Those brave souls,...Thank you highlighting their oftentimes forgotten skills. Salute...ATVB2U Scott Somerset
Way to go Ian,great subject and movie
Looks immaculate,I have also considered recreating certain movie scenes,Like the T34 and magnetic mine scene from Stalingrad 1993.Recommend you watch if you haven’t!Looks great once again and can’t wait for more!
exceptional work. great film, great characters. Very well done.
What a fantastic result!!! 👏👏👏👏Such a character in the film. And very apt as it is the 80 anniversary of D-Day this year. Well done again and thanks so much for showing us the process this diorama went through and sharing it with us.👍👍😉
Brilliant
Superb workmanship. Well done. What a way to honour those brave souls
Thank you very much for your referrals, just received my Berlin 1945 destroyed shop front , for my JS-2 diorama....😊
The Longest Day was, and still is, a great golden year's epic. Now one of it's scenes commemorated in miniature.....grand job, beautifully depicted.
Fantastic work again! This is a fine example of a very simple base with the right compostion with armor and figures and how great it looks. Beginner diorama makers take notes!
Great work as always, and a kinda behind the scenes look at how you get to your masterpiece!
Il n'y a pas de mot pour qualifier cette magnifique reconstitution, cet instantané tiré du film. FELICITATIONS
NOW THATS WHAT BRINGS BACK MEMORIES , VERY WELL DONE AND THANKS 😊 NOW GOING TOO LOOK FOR THE FILM .😮😊
Un like d entrée alors que je n ai pas encore vu la vidéo que du régal comme d'habitude continuez de nous émerveiller merci
Well sir, I think you gave this a jolly good "bash" !!!!! Brilliant modelling to replicate a fun scene from a special and important movie. Outstanding.

Such a great chap and close friend. Just wish I could get see you all that have done so much for me and without none of you really knowing it. I'd love get that moaning moanin Canadian Mr Coen over to our side of the pond and that Plonker from the land that serves warm beer, cheats at Cricket, doesn't know what a rugby ball looks like and most of his nations divorce applications are for his fellow Male population striking up inappropriate sexual relationships with Kangaroo's... Yep.....Glen....or better known as the "White Mamba"..aka... Halidon ! In the Down Under World of Neighbours, Home and Away.."Put another Shrimp on the Barbie"...."Crocodile Dundee"...."Extraction"...daft bugger "Steve Irwin"..and.."G'Day". AUSTRALIA..! Just so I can meet them in person with them being brill and much loved !! Anyway, I'm still weird as you can see ! Please stay safe, your family to. Thank you for continuing to keep me amazed with your shit hot projects. May the Force be with you !!!
Good too hear you're doing well Steve......say hello to Nige👍
Beautiful diorama mate, lovely job at recreating this rather funny scene from the film! Thanks for always building and painting beautiful models and dioramas for all too see
Bravo super diorama très original
Excellent piece of work. A lighthearted scene from a superb film, lost count of the number of times I`ve watched it.
Absolutely fantastic ❣👏👏👏👍
What an outstanding piece of work. The diorama is a superb tribute to those brave soldiers who went to war and especially the ones who never came home.
Thanks Ian for sharing your skills, you make it look easy. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Outstanding job one of my favourite scenes from a great film. Keep on doing what you do. Top notch 👍
Great work, well done. Cheers Bob 👍
Excellent looking diorama!.
Thank you for uploading.
If you have another figure left convert that one into Bill Millin the bagpiper!
Nice work Ian, and the dog looks really cool 👍👍
Stunning, brilliant diorama 😂
Amazing model, the redecorated work area is obviously working well. Best wishes to you, my great uncle drove a British ambulance off one of the landing craft on D-day, I wonder if he was directed up the beach by this great British war hero.
Best wishes again from NZ.
Thanks and kudos to your Uncle for being one of the many (few) who were there.....Maud was Beachmaster on Juno Beach where Canadian troops landed......I would guess your Uncle landed on Sword Beach with the British.........my Grandfather drove an Army Fire Tender and landed on D-Day + 6 so missed him completely, lol
@@CWModelling I remember my great uncle telling me about the Canadians, so I think he must have been near them. He also had great admiration of the German pilots because the ones he saw never shot at the ambulances. He told me they used to keep the ambulances and lorrys separate at first but they switched to having them mixed together because they thought it would be safer for the lorrys. My uncle was a great man, he didn't want to fight so he became a medic and that role meant he spent a lot of his time near the front line. He was also part of operation Market Garden.
Muy vacano gracias por compartir
Absolutely outstanding piece of work and truly added colour to the movie scene. Out of interest where do get your foam board from?
Thanks............ ua-cam.com/video/oRzuxO77yuk/v-deo.html 👍
Klasse Arbeit 👍🏻 😀.
brilliant
It is great. and there's Sean Connery with the breen machine gun
Amazing work as usual! Out of curiosity what no.1 brush were you using? That brush can hold a beautiful point and still has a belly full of paint.
Thanks.......brushes are Kolinsky Sable from Rosemary & Co 👍
Love it👌
Moin Klasse !!!!!!!! SUUUUUPER 👍👍👍👍
Extra ! Super boulot 🤩👏👏
Brilliant work as always Ian. Do you have any plans to sell your resin printed parts? I would certainly buy some. I have a couple of Saturn printers, a 2 and a 3 Ultra but have no idea using Blender and at nearly 62 feel I'm too long in the tooth to learn.
Thanks......lol, I'm only a couple or three years younger than you, so if I can teach myself Blender then I'm sure you can too😉
Lovely job ! What are you thinning the AK 3G with, having nothing but problems airbrushing it.
Thanks.....I use the AK thinner in about 50/50....it took me a while to get used it too👍
@@CWModelling your videos inspired me to take the plunge and get an airbrush, been putting it off for ages because I wasn’t sure if I had the skill. But seeing your results made me go for it. Thanks!
Thank you again for this video! I just received my circuit joy and will try it in a few days :) Bought a set of cutting mats with it. and have a lot of good old tamiya tape. What tape did you use? its a lot bigger which might be handy if I have bigger models
Grüße :)
Cool, I hope it works for you.......the sheets of tape I have are from Tamiya and are A5 size roughly.......As I mention in the video description, the Cricut won't cut the tape straight out the box as it will cut right through it and the backing sheet, so you have to insert washers made from paper under the cutting needle holder to lift the blade high enough to stop it cutting right through the backing sheet and only cut the tape......Mine took 2 paper washers......there are videos on the web that show you what to do......also in the cutting materials library you have to create a custom material and give it the lightest pressure setting.....As I said hopefully it works for you too 👍
@@CWModelling is the sheet Tamiya 87129? Ok I will have to remember this. Sadly my Circut joy did not connect to my laptop. When I wanted to connect it, the laptop said that I should check the PIN but the window did not open to insert the Pin (Which I found out after a lot of research is 0000 and many people had to inser the pin). So I just packed it back in the box and will return it for a new one. (I bought it new but the contents were clearly used before.... Amazon at its best..) Maybe with the next it will work or I have to look for alternatives like using it with my ipad or so.
cricut* not circut :D
The sheets I have are plain without the grid - Ref: 87130👍
Awesome work, my friend! 👏👏
Thank for this video! I hope you feeling better after all you problem. With love from Ukraine))))
Thank you for watching.....I'm good and I hope Ukraine will be again soon 👍
Another brilliant diorama! which double sided sticky tape and wood veneer do you use please? the balsa wood i use doesn't stick to any tape so i always have to glue it
Sorry, no idea who makes either as they're both generic that I buy on Ebay....i do know the veneer is White Oak if it makes a difference👍
Ok i'll have a trial of a few. Thank you

You do realise that 4stripes is a Royal Navy Captain, not a Commander
EDIT: It appears that Maud was a lieutenant Commander but given the temporary rank of Captain for the D-Day beach landings. He ended his naval career as a Commodore 👍
Another masterpiece again, excellent, catches the scene from the movie perfectly 👍
🤝🎥👍
How amazing you are
