- We are making a super bench from a tree by sunset, and this is a memorial bench for Hedgelayer Phill. We have a lovely turnout from both the Kent and the Sussex bodgers, and we are determined to make an impressive bench as our way of saying what a fantastic friend, and fellow bodger (greenwood worker) Phill was.
Sorry to hear he gone, a lovely man RIP, you all did a good job on the bench

A fitting tribute to a lovely guy. Only met and chatted to Phil at the Kent willow basket day, and at the Bodgers Ball. He was a warm, humorous, accommodating type. Totally fitting amongst the wonderful members of the APTGW. My heart goes out to Phil's family, close friends and the Kent Group regulars.

Nice learning and afterlife gift! Which one do you think are the must have tools for basic handmade carpentry/joinery ? and which books would you recommend help novices start with handmade carpentry?
If you are thinking of what we did here which is greenwood working, the join bodgers.org and find a group near where you live...all you need is an axe and drawknife. Mike Abbott has done some very helpful books.
If you are thinking carpentry as practised widely today in the building trade etc, the a saw, a plane, a hammer and a chisel...and watch some Paul Sellers videos here.

I am a little curious about one of the tools being used. I was hoping someone could tell me about it. The segment where one gentleman was boring out a mortice, he had a strange tool to clean the mortice up looked like a knife attached to the handle.and a hook to clean out the waste material on the other side.
Hello Benjamin, that is a Twybil, an ancient mortising axe. That particular one is by Sorby, and was made in 1871. They are often used by hurdle makers. I believe Ashley Isles still makes them.

Harry, I'm glad that you are persevering in the face of such a daunting challenge. You've always struck me as the type who was quiet but tough as nails. Of course, I'll be putting in my share of requests on your behalf with the big guy upstairs. I certainly want, and hope, that you are 100% very soon.
