Stunning drone scenery! And pleasing commentary as always. Can’t say I’m swayed by the Triumphs. I think the control placement is a bit too rearward for my liking. But your review will be anticipated! HI RUBY!!

Thanks Tim, glad to hear that you appreciated the drone shots because getting them was a bit stressful, I almost didn't bother. I knew that there was a no-fly zone in the vicinity but wasn't sure where it started and ended. I had a look on a map at home and figured that I would probably be allowed to fly there. I decided to just check the app when I got there because that tells you of any restrictions based on your current location. What I didn't realise was that the app needs an internet connection and that where I was, there would be no mobile phone coverage 🤬 So I couldn't check if it was safe to fly and almost cancelled the flight. Then the rebel in me spoke up and I decided that I'd checked at home and it looked like where I was would be out of the no-fly zone, so sod it, put the drone up 😝
But because of the uncertainty I made sure that it was a short flight, so I didn't have as much time to get the shots as I would have liked ☹️
I hope for Triumph's sake that the 400s do well but I'm pretty sure they're not for me.
I think that engine will be powerful but a bit uncultured and probably devoid of much character.
For me the RE 350 engine, smooth and full of character is right up my street.
The Triumphs are going to appeal more to people who want the most performance for their money, even if that comes at the cost of smoothness and character IMO. As a young lad they would have probably appealed to me but these days I have different things that I look for in a motorcycle.
I'm not sure if I will be able to get a test ride on one but if I am able to, I will be sure to video it and let you know if I've changed my mind about them 😉

I went too see them a couple of weeks ago at Chester triumph, and have to say there fantastic looking bikes, the fit finish and attention to detail are on another level compared to Royal enfield, if they had been available when I got my hunter I'd have gone for the triumph in a heart beat, the only thing stopping me get one is the ridiculous price i got offered for my 10 month old hunter, 😢

      Hi HR,
yes, everybody I know who has seen one in the UK says the same.
Hopefully the production versions will be just as good 🤞
I believe that Triumph did have issues with the Bajaj QA for a while but for the press bikes at least, the quality seems really good !
Unfortunately dealers are being milked dry and struggle to earn a living selling new bikes these days. As a consequence they will always rip you off when you do a trade in.
I've done that about four times in the past five years and every time they screw you over and they won't budge on the price they'll offer you.
I usually trade in anyway, just for the convenience, but you can save yourself a fair bit of money by going to the effort of selling the bike privately.
I would always recommend selling your old bike privately and then taking that money into the dealership to buy the next bike.
You can save yourself 500-1000 pounds easily by doing that. But selling privately is a faff ( tyre kickers ! ) and can take a while, so I currently prefer to just take the hit when I trade in.
Something appealing about riding the old bike to the shop, parking it up and riding the new bike home 😁
      Cheers HR !

When it comes to price here in the UK it has to be remembered that RE won't see 20% of the bixe price as that's VAT. There is also Vehicle Purchase Tax that they won't see either. A comparison I would like to see based on that is the pre tax price in both markets.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому

      Hi Simon,
yes, but the Speed 400 still wouldn't undercut the Classic 350 Chrome which it does in India.
Corrected for VAT the Speed 400 costs 4219 EUR and the Classic 350 Chrome 3990 EUR.
So it's strange that the Triumph can undercut the Classic Chrome in India but not here in Europe.
Both bikes are shipped from India too of course, so that can't be the reason.
I guess we are paying a bit more because Triumph thinks they can get away with it in this market 🤷‍♂
They are probably right. Even at the higher EU price the Speed 400 looks like a lot bike for the money.
They probably do need to undercut the RE Classic 350 Chrome to gain any sort of foothold in India as well.
A lot of reviewers over there mentioned the undercutting of the RE Classic Chrome, so I'm guessing that is all part of their marketing strategy over there and it seemed like that fact was being pushed quite hard by those reviewers fortunate enough to get to ride a Speed 400.
Overall I think the Speed 400 came in about where I was expecting it to ( so that's good ! ) but the Scrambler 400 X seems slightly overpriced in comparison. I was hoping for that to be around 5500 -5600 EUR ( so 200-300 EUR more than the Speed ). Coming in at over 6000 EUR without any accessories fitted seems quite steep for a 400cc single. It's a punchy price IMO but the Scrambler looks great, so they'll probably sell plenty of them, even at that price !
      Cheers Simon,
      Garry & Ruby ❤🐕

Hi what do you think about the braking in scrambler 400x it's way to spongy ?
Im thinking of changing the brake pads to speed 400 after a year will this affects the warranty?

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому +1

If you watch the video, you will realise that I do not have one. They haven't been launched in Europe yet.
I'd be surprised if the pads of the Speed are different to those of the Scrambler. I don't think changing to those pads will make any difference.
RE brakes in recent years have always been quite spongy. You can get some improvement by fitting third party sintered pads but the initial feel is always going to be quite weak. Pull them hard enough and they work well though.
Changing the brake pads should not affect your warranty. It's like changing tyres. If they are worn, you are allowed to replace them. Just tell RE that they were worn out, should you ever be questioned about it !
If I were you I would find some third party sintered pads which fit the Bybre callipers you have.
      Good luck,
      ER.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому +1

      ...or one year William.
So for most people that's going to be one service every 12 months, which is still half as many as RE want to charge you for.
So in the first three years you would be saving the cost of three RE small services, so let's say 400-500 EUR ?
That's quite a saving, as long as the Triumph 12 month service costs about the same as the RE 12 month services.
I'm pleased with the pricing of the Speed 400, although it's a shame that they didn't price it to match the price of the Classic 350 Chrome.
But over here I don't think they need to. That bike still seems like great value at 5350 EUR (ish).
The Scrambler version coming in at over 6k EUR is a bit of a shock though. You're getting into bigger bike territory at that price.
But I'm sure Triumph will sell plenty of both bikes in Europe and it's nice to see another brand bringing bikes into the Economical Rides segment of the marketplace 😂
      Cheers William 🥃🥃

Very nice to see/hear Buddy again. I watched a vid of two guys riding both bikes from Dehli to the highest pass in the Himalayans. They both made it with no issues. Triumph has a huge following, so they should do well. Curious if cost of ownership will be similar to RE. Nice aerials. 🙃Good to see Ruby as always. Cheers from Lance & Leo. 🥃

      Hi Lance,
yep, Buddy is running beautifully at the moment and still putting a smile on my face with every ride !
Actually I have stumbled across that video myself in doing my research 👍🏻
Thanks for appreciating the drone shots. It was a bit fraught flying from the roadside, there wasn't really anywhere where I could pull in. So I didn't hang about but just about got the shots that I wanted to get 😅
Hopefully the baby Triumphs will help Triumph to increase their market share and also shift a few more of their more expensive bikes further down the line.
I've only ever owned one Triumph but it was an excellent bike and held its value very well, so I do like them as a brand. I also have a fair bit of Triumph riding gear of course ( as one does ! ).

Waited for this video, as we talked about it in Wuppertal…
The Triumph appealed to me in the first glance…
… but with the vibration issue AND the lack of a centerstand and no possibility to add one this bike isn’t for me!
I keep my Honda PCX scooter as a commuter anyway and maybe my mighty Sportster too ( which isn’t sure), but will get a RE Classic or maybe the new Bullet in late spring next year as everything runs as planned.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому

      Hi Sexy 😝
Yes, good point about the lack of a centre stand. That would annoy me too ! My Street Triple R was the same of course and trying to get it onto a paddock stand on my own always gave me panic attacks. I was always terrified of dropping it because there was nobody there to hold it whilst I was getting the hang of putting it on and taking it off the paddock stand.
If I'd have dropped that bike, I swear, I would have cried for a LOOOOOOOOONG time ! Fortunately I didn't but it felt like it was always on the cards !
I'll be interested to hear what the European reviews say about the Triumph 400 engine. Some Indian reviews were also slightly critical of the gearbox and the shift feel.
There's no point in it being sexy and well made if the platform it is all based around is flawed in the first place.
So I'll be really interested to hear what European reviewers make of that engine and gearbox !
Fingers crossed here, hoping that you get your RE in the spring Michael 🤞

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому

      Haha, probably not James.
There's still the small matter of finding 5300 EUR behind the sofa somewhere 😝
As I mentioned in the video, there are some question marks over that 400 engine ( and possibly gearbox according to some ), so I'm interested to hear what the European reviewers say when they get to ride them for a bit longer. There's no point in building a pretty and quality looking motorcycle if the platform upon which it is based is flawed in the first place.
My guess is that the Triumph engine will feel powerful and quick but won't have the smoothness or character of the J Series platform.
So horses for courses really. At least now there is a relatively high performance 400 single available for purchase. It's good to have more choice and hopefully Triumph tested the base platform well enough to be sure that the punters will be happy with it. The launch was delayed multiple times after all, so hopefully there will be no serious issues with the expensive parts !
Cheers James. Looking forward to your test ride. If you're feeling like treating her again, take Mrs Ainsworth along with you, she'll love it !
Pretty sure I won't be able to get a test ride on one over here, unfortunately !

Firstly. Nice to Buddy out n about.😊
I went to see the new 400 at Shirlaws in Aberdeen, think they were one of the first to show it, in the UK.
They had the red colour scheme.
I would need it lowered as I was on the very tip of my tip toes. (I got slightly more toes on the ground on the 900 speed twin)
First impressions are it’s very well made and ouse’s quality 😊
    It’s nicely priced.
For me, a would need to add some accessories, straight off. Heated grips, fly screen, engine bars.
So this would obviously take the price up, as Triumph accessories are more expensive the RE.
Yes I would be interested in one. But, I personally think, I would still have more interest in my Meteor, when parked up.
Seriously thinking of getting Bumble lowered with Hagen shocks, and front by similar amount. Also the cam mod and led indicators .
I also purchased the touring seat for very good price. Which I may get some padding removed, so similar to low seat which I have.
So that and 20mm? Lower should be confident inspired to myself……😂.
I for that reason light the Rebel 500.
So for me at this moment if I change, it be the Rebel. But the only model suitable be it’s bigger brother the 1100.😂
    Thanks Garry and Ruby❤

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Mark.
For me there is still a question mark over the engine and the gearbox. The engine has vibration zones and I've heard a couple of times that the shifting doesn't feel very precise or confidence inspiring. It could end up being a bit of a pig in a nice dress. It all comes down to how good the base platform is, i.e. the engine and the gearbox.
My guess is that the engine will be fast but unrefined. It will probably lack a bit of character too. I imagine it will be sort of the opposite of the 350 J Series engine 😂 I prefer character and refinement from my engines and I suspect that the RE 350's will win that battle hands down.
I hope the Triumph 400s sell well but for now I am happy enough with the bikes that I have.
My curiosity does mean that I will try to get a ride on one though, just in case my suspicions prove to be incorrect. If I ride one and love it, I could be persuaded 🤔
      Cheers Mark, take care !

@@economicalrides for sure, maybe into late March, next year, I would like to test ride. As you say, the RE J engine seems to be a winner.
Bruce of Coastrider Scotland has over 10k miles, it’s covered big daily miles on his trips away.
The engine, gear change is smooth, plus the old worldly looks of the engine, with modern ecu, fuel enjection, will make them reliable if kept serviced.
Every where, I have been, people stop and chat.
Much as I like my 500 Rebel, you don’t get that, the triumph, be much the same.

I'm very interested in the 400, because in many ways it's similar to the BSA, not as Retro, but with the brand cachet of Triumph. It has 90% of the power of the BSA, but with considerably less weight (like 40kg) so for an old geezer like me, should be easy to manage. I'm hoping to get my hands on one for a test ride in early December, so will report back then. Cheers from a very soggy Cornwall. ps very jealous of those dry roads.

      Hi CMD !
I hope you are keeping well 🙂
I think the engine might turn out to be a bit of a buzz box but it has good performance for its capacity.
It will probably not be the most refined single out there but it will go well 😝
But that's not really the character I look for in a motorcycle engine. Possibly in my 20s I would have taken performance over character but not these days. My guess is that the 400 engine will lack refinement and character, certainly when compared to the RE J Series 350.
But I think that it's clear that Triumph were more focused on performance with this engine.
These bikes are probably aimed at the younger riders and they like their big numbers above all else don't they ?
I'd love to try one though, just to see if I am totally wrong in my assumptions.
Unfortunately only the very large dealers bother with demo bikes over here and the nearest one of those to me is probably about four hours away, so an eight hour round trip ! Not happening !
So I shall look forward to your planned test ride instead 🙂

Yes I remember you talking about the so called baby Triumph.way back in the early days of your channel, Garry. The RE 350s have proven themselves very capable machines and Triumph may find it difficult now to get into that market.
Oops is my bias showing there 😂

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому

      Hi Peter,
I'm sure that's why all Indian reviewers made a point of saying that the Speed 400 undercuts the RE Classic 350 Chrome over there. Triumph clearly told them to put that message out there. I think they needed to undercut at least one likely RE competitor to gain any sort of foothold in India. I notice that they didn't feel the need to undercut the Classic Chrome in Europe, so that should tell us something !
Obviously it would be great for Triumph to sell a lot of those bikes in India and in Asia in general but in any case I am sure that they will sell a lot of them in Europe.
If I hadn't bought Norman this year I would almost certainly have put my name down for a Speed 400 to replace Metal Ruby.
If the engine is okay, the rest of the bike looks brilliant and you are getting a lot of performance for the money.
      Cheers Peter,

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi Chad,
      that's my fear too.
I think that the 400 engine will be quite lively, but vibey and certainly less characterful than the 350 J Series. I think that is what will kill it for me.
I strongly suspect that this engine will lack character. It will be for people who value performance above all else. For me, the smoothness and the way the J Series makes its power, is what makes the Meteor more than just another lightweight cruiser style bike. That engine really makes the bike, as it does for the Classic and the Hunter too.
I think that the Triumph 400 engine will be very generic and revvy with an unsatisfying power delivery. I'm pretty sure that it's not going to be for me but I do still want to try one.
For me, character in a motorcycle is important and usually the majority of a motorcycle's character comes from the engine.
      Cheers Chad 👍🏻

      I concur Christopher.
I can see an argument for buying the RE 452 Himalayan next year whereas I was struggling with the two Triumphs. Basically one of them would be replacing Buddy for road work but I really don't want to sell Buddy at this moment in time, just like you with your Classic.
I could see me either swapping Norman for the 452 or POSSIBLY expanding to three bikes next year. That would be ideal because then I could compare the 411 and 452 on the same trails etc. It would be fun to do and make for interesting content. But I need the finances to fall into place for that to happen. We'll see. It's definitely well on my radar, the new Himmy !

      Hi you two !
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I did make a special effort and put the drone in the air. Unfortunately no internet there so I was unable to check if I was cleared to fly there. I had looked at home beforehand and there were no-fly zones nearby but I wanted to check with my geo location once I got there. Without internet I was screwed, so just assumed that I would be ok ( I think I was too ! ). But because of the uncertainty I wanted to get the drone up and down quickly, so I didn't get as much footage as I would have liked. But first drone b-roll filmed without damaging the drone or getting arrested - CHECK !
I think the Triumph engine will be quick, buzzy and lacking character. As opposed to the J Series 350 which is refined and full of character. So a bike for everybody. For me character and then refinement are my main criteria for an engine.
Yes, the Himalayan 452 is tempting but it's not going to be cheap. If I am going to be throwing a bike into a hedge all of the time, I'd prefer it to not be too nice or too expensive. I could probably get one but I suspect I'd be too afraid to take it off-road for fear of damaging it 🤔 Norman has got used to being dropped by now 😂

£5.5k in the UK for the Scrambler 400 X which is a great price for the class, be interesting to see what RE prices the new 450 Himy at to compete, even though very different bikes, the audience is possibly similar.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  11 місяців тому +1

The new Himmy will be about 1K more at least IMO. It’s a premium RE model, like the Super Meteor. It won’t be a budget bike, they’ll keep the 411 version for that, for as long as they are allowed to, I would imagine. 7K EUR and 6500 quid for the base model I reckon. Another 500 quid will get you the top spec one with a few accessories for big adventures.
Too much money for me to want to throw it at a hedge in any case 😂

@@HippoDrones I think they’ll have to, if they want to keep a budget do anything bike in their range. They can sell the 411 alongside the 452.
The 411 and Scram are still selling well and the 452 will be in a different price bracket altogether, so they’d be mad not to.
They will milk the 411 platform until it no longer gets through the emissions testing I would imagine. It’s theirs, it’s paid for and there is still a market for it. I think the 452 will be priced beyond a lot of people, so it would be sensible to continue offering a cheaper ADV alternative.
I’d be very surprised if the 411 and 452 are not sold alongside one another for a while yet. Once that 411 motor can’t be made to pass emissions regs then they will have to kill it. It’s just a question of when that might be. Must be getting close but they got it through Euro 5, so who knows ?
It will definitely be interesting to see what happens because the new Himalayan is playing in a different league to the old one and will be priced accordingly. If the 411 motor is the issue, maybe we’ll see a new 350 Himalayan with a J Series engine come in as the future budget option ? I quite like the sound of that, if they can keep the weight down !

@@HippoDrones How ? The line is up and running and they've been making them for years. No cost to them. The new Himmy will be made on a new line in the new factory. Only the bikes in the new factory have the quality we expect. The 411 and Scram are made in an older factory where apparently they send apprentices to learn welding 😂
The 350s and the Super Meteor saw a real step up in quality, presumably because they are coming out of a new factory. The 452 is sure to be built there too. So the old line for the 411 and Scram in the other factory can keep running for a while.
They only introduced the Scram a couple of years ago. It seems unlikely they'd launch a new model with all of that expense if the platform is going to be dead two years later.
I seem to be the only person in the world who doesn't think that the 452 will REPLACE the 411 🤷‍♂😂
How many different Adventures does KTM make ? Five, six ? No reason why RE can't have two Himalayans in their lineup !
I'd be amazed if the 452 replaces the 411, it's a completely different market they are aiming for with the new bike.

Sure it will mostly be a service every 12 months rather than 10000 miles but it’s still half as often as every Royal Enfield and every service costs money. So with the Triumphs you will at least be saving the cost of that extra service in the first three years, so what's that ? 400-500 EUR saved ? Assuming of course that the Triumph 12 month services cost about the same as the RE ones.
Owning two REs myself, I do find the 6 month service interval annoying. That's 4 services a year instead of 2. And since my dealer is a three hour round trip away, the less frequent I have to be there, the better.

4 or 5 year warranty? Doesn't mean much, TriUmp are well known for dodging warranty claims, and hiding known faults. Ask Uncle Stu about his BineyVile gearbox saga and his long term battle with them over it, and faults that PROPER manufacturers would issue customer recalls, Just saying, "The Truth is Out There". Cheers DINO Et Al.

      Hi Dino and crew.
Well, I can only speak from my own experience.
I bought the Street Triple R new when it came out. Had one warranty job which was sorted without any battle. Then the bike was perfect for three years, I sold it on and barely lost any money on it. So MY experience of owning a Triumph was overwhelmingly positive Dino.
I think with all brands, it's best if nothing goes wrong in the first place ! You are always at the mercy of their warranty policy when something goes wrong. Look at RE, refusing to replace Buddy's clearly defective mirrors after they shook themselves to bits !!! Presumably their warranty doesn't cover glass and that was their reasoning !
I'm not sure that Triumph are any worse than anybody else. With warranty claims it's a bit of a mixed bag. Don't think there is such a thing as a quibble-free warranty anywhere !
With Triumph, as with all other brands, you have to buy it and hope that nothing too expensive goes wrong.
These days that's often the case and the scope of the warranty becomes a bit of a non-issue.
Slightly concerning that the first reviews are mentioning engine vibrations and poor gearbox shifting though !
I think this is going to be an uncultured and characterless engine but with very decent performance.
So the polar opposite of the RE J Series engine then 😂
I guess people now at least have a choice !

As a former RE owner, ( Meteor ) I have to say that the 350 engine was for me a bit too underpowered…. I bought it new and when I wanted to trade it in for the Interceptor the RE dealer wasn’t interested in taking it back…. that really set me off…. got a T100 Bonneville instead and couldn’t be happier… the 400 series is very high on my wish list and it has plenty of power and is quite capable of overtaking… as far as RE …. well they lost me as a potential customer…. sad but true… but to each their own of course 😊

      Hi Robert,
that's not really RE's fault, it's the dealer who decides whether or not to accept a trade in.
Seems like your RE dealer doesn't realise that it's easier to keep an existing customer than to find a new one !!!
Don't blame you at all if you end up with Triumph in the future, I'd do the same if my RE dealer didn't treat me right ! The 400s should be a nice upgrade on the RE 350 but I suspect that the engine may not have much character.
I will be interested to hear some western reviews and their opinions of that Triumph 400 engine.
I think it will be powerful but "buzzy" and probably lacking some charm, but we'll see.
Good luck with your T100 in the meantime !

Tried it at Triumph too where I bought a 3 year old T100 , they didn’t want anything to do with RE due to earlier experiences .... also read several posts about the way RE - dealers treat people when they want to trade in a RE bike .... so it seems the New bike cheap price comes with more costs in the aftermath....

blake was here! lol that going to be my new way of telling people that i was watching there video. old school, remember the spray paint stating that someone was there. well that is going to be my way of saying, i watched the video. I dont thing unless we live in a small town, that small displacement motorcycles will be a big seller here in the states. maybe when the 15 min city happens here. lol, i think the master minds up above will dissolve humanity in some way before that happens. you know, the next 15 years or so. madmax america!

Haha, nice one Blake, feel free to do that !
Yep, I don't think the 400s will be a big seller in the States either. I think they will sell a ton of them in Europe though and importantly that gets more Europeans into the Triumph brand, which is great for them moving forward. It's a great way for them to increase their presence on the streets of Europe and possibly (?) Asia, although I think they will have their work cut out to even dent RE's sales in India !
But other Asian markets might like the idea of a smart looking affordable Triumph and those are BIG markets, so good luck to Triumph over there 👍🏻
As I mentioned in the video, there is still a slight question mark over the quality of the engine ( and gearbox shifting apparently ), so I look forward to hearing how it does in a longer term review. I think it will be a somewhat unrefined, characterless engine with very decent performance.
Effectively that would make it the polar opposite of the RE J Series 350 engine 😂
So people will now have more choice, which is good.
I suspect that if you want refinement and character, you'll go for an RE 350.
If you are only interested in maximising your performance per dollar, you'll go with the Triumph and learn to live with its inadequacies in other areas.
      🤔

That is a small displacement bike I can support.
I was looking at the RE 350 line as the local dealership near me wanted to bring in a side car for the 350 and sell it for under 10k dollars. @@BlakesPipes Hi BP.
I think a 350 J Series with sidecar would be brilliant and am secretly hoping that RE brings out a factory outfit at some point.
It would sell really well AND be able to undercut the competition by a huge amount ! As you say, the out of the box solutions are crazy expensive. Even that Chinese one costs 12000 EUR I believe, which is too much money to risk on something unproven.
I think a 125 is perfect for trail riding, probably all you would ever need. You just need the right one. I had one with a Yamaha 125 engine and it was all top end, so there was a lot of clutch slipping involved when things got steep or tricky. It was no fun off-road. If you can find a bike with a 125 engine with an emphasis on grunt, a 125 would be absolutely perfect.
Nice and light and fast enough to be fun getting there 👍🏻
I've just got in from my Trail Triple Challenge with Norman. I suppose two out of three wasn't too bad ! More details in next week's video ( hopefully - haven't checked the recordings yet 🤞 )
