Yeah, but the show isn't targeted towards you is the thing. They know most F1 fans will watch it regardless, so their goal is to appeal to other audiences who might not watch it.
@@yerrie1908 Sometime's they will still have some stuff from other teams. Considering they had different crews embedded with teams this year, it's surprising that they didn't have those races covered well. I understand it'd be a TON of money to have a crew for 10 teams though. After 2 great seasons, maybe they should've invested in that? Still a great show, especially for newer fans or people who aren't even fans yet. But imagine how much better it'd be for them seeing George's story especially.
@@esoteridactyl yea the George story would have been great, what surprises me also is that media didn’t pickup what Vettel said im the Ferrari episode, when they talked about the enige and penalty he made a comment about not wanting to win cheating, this engine cheating might have been the start of Vettels exit at Ferrari
DTS also made me a fan of the sport. Because of the show, I watched the last season. Experienced gasly's win, Checo's win, Russel's heartbreak, the crash all live. Maybe because of that the S3 of the show didn't have that much of an effect on me.

Also, I think in one of your recent videos you mentioned you're from Lancelin. I grew up living between Jurien & Wanneroo. What a beautiful part of the world - very different from Bahrain I would imagine.
This series is awesome. If there is one way to improve is to use more behind the scene and less race footage. They produced for 1 years and it s frustrating to only get 400 minutes from it. And half on theses and external investigations and footage. There is probably a way to do it in a more deep and consistent way. I appreciate the efforts from mercedes and ferrari to get involved a little more this year. They also found interesting camera angles when they used races footage. I don t think they judge or overreact, it s more and historical document. Great for future generations. Having it in 50 or 100 years will be more useful to understand f1 history. This is a pretty unique document filmed during covid and showing real reactions from athletes wondering about the evolution of the pandemic. This is exceptional to have it on video footage. Reality is more interesting than fictions and theses documentaries and more interesting than the majority of fictions produced by netflix.
I think George Russell in the Mercedes seat had to be the biggest story last year and they didn't follow that? Think of how nervous Bottas was and the whole team and then the heartbreak of George at the end🤷♂️
Another Great Video Kym 👊🏼 I sent a email suggesting that they add a bonus episode in a week or two featuring George Russell and his Mercedes weekend haha 🤣🤣 my email probably went to their junk folder 📂 lmao Stay safe out there Kym 👊🏼
DTS also got me into F1. Too bad, they didn't got Russell in this season, but you can't really blame them, so much has happened in the 2020 season. I think they could easily make 20 episodes...
2:35 - It’s not the stedicam that they’re using to obtain smooth shots, it’s gimbal stabilizer. While it works in a similar way to a stedicam it shouldn’t be confused with. Stedicam requires way more knowledge to operate and it’s been around from 1975 while electronic stabilization has started around 2015.
My favourite episodes were the Mercedes episode (ep.3), Pierre winning in Monza episode (ep.6) and both Bahrain/Sahkir episodes Grosjean's crash and Checo's win (ep.9+10) Highly disappointed they didn't make an episode, or even MENTION Turkey- missed an iconic race and Sir Lewis Hamilton matching Micheal Schmacher's 7th World Championship record!! Wtf Netflix?? Also disappointed they didn't show Russell's tragic, champion's drive in Hamilton's Mercedes- that would've made for a heart wrenching episode! And a bit frustrated how they showed only Hamilton's mistakes, and none of his greatest moments this season- like winning with three tyres in Silverstone, and Turkey, from 28 seconds behind, to 30 seconds ahead in treacherous conditions- legendary WDC drive!!
I do think the series is great however, as a person who watches pretty much every race, I do spot some errors in the audio. For example, when Charles took out Seb at the Styrian GP they played Vettel's "Mein Gott, Muss das Sein?!" from Brazil 2019 which we obviously a different race. Also they often show a clip of a driver on track but flick to the team principle on the pitwall which is obviously a different circuit. I noticed that a few times, the driver would clearly be at say Bahrain but the team principle/pitwall shot would be at Silverstone. I know its petty but I notice that sort of thing.
Watched the while season in 1 day. Was good as usual. Surprised they didn't have anything about Renault to Alpine. I do hate the change wholeheartedly as Renault was the name that brought me to F1.
Bahrain n Sakhir GP deserve their own episodes tbh. I wanna see what went on after George Russell lost his race other than saying the word "gutted" for a millionth time on interviews.
I noticed there was more real commentary audio from Crofty and Brundle this season. S1 for instance, the ADR commentary was really detracting to me, but it seems to have been toned down.
I'd love to sub to Netflix but it was either that or pay cable to get ALL THE F1 RACES thru ESPN. I'll go to a friend's house to watch DTS later . . .they don't watch all the F1 races live like I do
This series had me quite underwhelmed and that's coming from a 27 year old who has been watching since they were 4 and really loved S1 and S2. - Manufactured fake drama between Lando and Carlos - Nothing about Williams being sold. In fact, ZERO about Williams if you exclude the odd clip of Claire talking about Racing Point and Ferrari. - No mention of Renault changing to Alpine and Cyril getting the boot. - Nothing about how Alpha Tauri announced they were getting rid of Kyvat right after the last race so he didn't even get a "farewell" race. - No mention of Mazepin's gross behaviour and Haas pushing it under the carpet due to "dealing with it internally". - Nothing about the absolute clown of a race Russell had when Lewis was off sick. That was hands down the most emotional race I saw all year, especially as I was excited for Checo but gutted for George. - Not a single whiff of Hulkenberg coming in at last minute and managing 8th place from back of the grid with barely any practice in the car. - Nothing about Alonso returning for 2021 If you want drama, it's there. No need to cut and edit parts to fake it.
@@KymIllman it means “cheers” I thought some of the locals would try to teach you that. A lot of people that visited Hungary usually test it out on me if they remember to say it correctly.
There is some great insider commentary, that at the time, wasnt really openly communicated, which is nice to see in the documentary. But often it is quite obvious that the show is tailored to a new F1 audience. Sometimes the commentary is just too much on the nose and lacks depth. (strategy wise, tire degradation etc.) also i really dislike the fake voice over they are doing to make its sound more sensational. You can't just drive faster. there are so many interesting reasons, racing dynamics play out the way they do and Netflix does not do them justice. (from a long term fan perspective it's just lacking depth) The lack of coverage concerning the end racism campaign I found to be extremely disappointing. only having the last 5 min of the last episode dealing with the matter, did not do it justice. And focusing that time just on Lewis made it look as if he was the only one concerned with the matter at hand. For the first two sessons it felt reasonable to have the lack of depth and lack of discussion of bigger issues concerning equality and racism in F1 and motorspot in general. But in 2020 so much happened that they should have given these matters more attention. It seems like a wasted opportunity. DTS is defintly a fantstic introduction to the sport and normalises the behind the scenes and human side of such an exclusive sport. but it is not with out its flaws.
I'd love a more realistic, factual representation of the sport and bts. Like the last 2 seasons, the 3rd also unnecessarily dramatizes stories where no drama took place at the cost of actually interesting stories like Hulkenberg returning, Russels stint with Mercedes etc. I mean I love the insight and all that but this reality TV, soap opera type directing/storytelling is really nothing for the people who already follow the sport.
Hey Kym! Big Fan here, Love your content. I'm visiting in Manama. I would love to meet you for an autograph. Is there any way you can arrange a meet-up in town?
Have a litte video idea. I think it would be really interestnong if you put a gopro on your main camera an let us follow you that way on race day. probably a bit longer video.
I could write paragraphs on how I feel about DTS but I'll keep it short. Don't think they got the flow of this season right, felt way too all over the place. Second point is that the added commentary is too obvious and takes me out of the show and the moment they're creating. It needs better writing to sound more like mid flow commentary capture rather than overdubbing. The show is beneficial for F1 but they're leaving a lot of potential on the table. The more they do that, the quicker the end of the show.
Season 3 hasnt got anythin on 1 or two. Feel there was very little to get excited about. Needs more races covered in detail (like an episode per race) and coverage of all teams rather than just Renault, Mclaren, AM, merc, and ferrari. Season 2 had williams in detail. Alfa romeo nowhere to be seen which would be class. Anto is super underrated as a driver and kimi is popular so i cant see why they dont film with them
@@KymIllman Anto would be a laugh for an episode though. Hes a good driver with little supporters outside of Italy but he could probably gain some fans if they showed how funny and nice he is
For some reason didn’t think this season wasn’t as good as the first two. Not sure why. Definitely didn’t need the last 6 min of episode 10...that’s just my opinion and probably not a popular one
I understand the appeal it might have to new audiences, people who haven't watched F1 or never really got into it. But as a fan of the sport that follows it closely, that goes beyond watching the races, I see it as a huge misrepresentation. The whole show plays more like a use of F1 content that the producers then use to make their own story that's vaguely related to reality. They like to choose a side and make the other side the complete villain, they overdramatize situations or use clips and bits out of context. I'm certain that if I had just watched Drive To Survive for the first time without knowing much about the sport I'd now think: 1. Carlos and Lando are frenemies. 2. Albon is a crybaby that can't cope with the pressure of F1. 3. Gasly is a God and only Redbull is to blame for his rought times (which might be true but wouldnt that make 2. untrue?) 4. Charles is disrespectful towards Seb. 5. I'd also think Grosjean was dead for like 10 minutes before they showed him getting out of the car. 6. Ferrari was 12-13th the whole year (when in actuality Seb scored a podium and some good finishes and Charles scored 2 podiums and so many great finishes and carried the team for almost the entire year) 7. Lawrence Stroll is a villain. 8. Who's George Russell? 9. Valtteri Bottas is a top driver it's just Mercedes don't want him to be competitive. All of the above statements might have some truth in them, but they're all too one sided, in reality the truth is not as dramatic. In my opinion this is a big problem especially when this show forms your first opinion about the sport. F1 should push for more of an objective view of the sport and what's going on. The use of heavy editing to dramatize situations, the fake team radios or commentators has to GO.
Drive to survive is a bit overdramatic for my taste. I used to watch F1 religiously with my father when schumi was dominant and boy those fights with Mika was something else! I fill that the same tyres for all and the no refuel rule killed the excitement for me and my father. The early years of Hamilton and redbull was exciting as well but the Mercedes redbull domination and the use of DRS made the sport boring.

Love your insight. I have watched all of season 3 already.
Do you know if Will Buxton is going to be working for F1 again this year?
I think George Russell in the Mercedes seat had to be the biggest story last year and they didn't follow that? Think of how nervous Bottas was and the whole team and then the heartbreak of George at the end🤷♂️
Another Great Video Kym 👊🏼 I sent a email suggesting that they add a bonus episode in a week or two featuring George Russell and his Mercedes weekend haha 🤣🤣 my email probably went to their junk folder 📂 lmao
Stay safe out there Kym 👊🏼
Great idea!!
Thanks Kym
You are so welcome!
Love these live chats
I concur
DTS also got me into F1. Too bad, they didn't got Russell in this season, but you can't really blame them, so much has happened in the 2020 season. I think they could easily make 20 episodes...
Was waiting for you😍
2:35 - It’s not the stedicam that they’re using to obtain smooth shots, it’s gimbal stabilizer. While it works in a similar way to a stedicam it shouldn’t be confused with. Stedicam requires way more knowledge to operate and it’s been around from 1975 while electronic stabilization has started around 2015.
Thanks
@@KymIllman keep up with that interesting content! There is hopefully interesting season ahead of us ;)
I am one of those who really got into F1 after season 1. I'd love them to also include pit crews, stewards, photographers, and track assistants.
Photographers, yes!
I would like to know more about the safety cars or funny stories from your hotel stays please.
Noted.
Good video kym... 💯
Hey Kym, can you make a video on what we should do in order to make a career in f1 if we are not taking the engineers or drivers path
I would honestly know so that might be quite a grind
My favourite episodes were the Mercedes episode (ep.3), Pierre winning in Monza episode (ep.6) and both Bahrain/Sahkir episodes Grosjean's crash and Checo's win (ep.9+10)
Highly disappointed they didn't make an episode, or even MENTION Turkey- missed an iconic race and Sir Lewis Hamilton matching Micheal Schmacher's 7th World Championship record!!
Well picked up Adam.
@@KymIllman thanks Kym. Is this something you noticed? Not sure if I'm making myself seem like a total nerd haha!
Watched the while season in 1 day. Was good as usual. Surprised they didn't have anything about Renault to Alpine. I do hate the change wholeheartedly as Renault was the name that brought me to F1.
It feels unnatural for me to say Alpeen
I cried also🤘🏻🏁
Who didn't in ep 9?
Bahrain n Sakhir GP deserve their own episodes tbh. I wanna see what went on after George Russell lost his race other than saying the word "gutted" for a millionth time on interviews.
I noticed there was more real commentary audio from Crofty and Brundle this season. S1 for instance, the ADR commentary was really detracting to me, but it seems to have been toned down.
Kym was there Netflix crew in Bahrain for preseason testing for season 4 DTS?
Me being a super big fan of Drive to Survive😅
Yes, they were there
I'd love to sub to Netflix but it was either that or pay cable to get ALL THE F1 RACES thru ESPN. I'll go to a friend's house to watch DTS later . . .they don't watch all the F1 races live like I do
good strategy!
I love your videos
Good to hear. They take some time to produce I promise you
@@KymIllman I have a question
@@KymIllman can you vlog next Sunday in the race please
This series had me quite underwhelmed and that's coming from a 27 year old who has been watching since they were 4 and really loved S1 and S2.
- Manufactured fake drama between Lando and Carlos
- Nothing about Williams being sold.
- Nothing about Alonso returning for 2021
If you want drama, it's there. No need to cut and edit parts to fake it.
Yes Hulk's return. That would've been interesting
Sean's eyebrows have been driving and surviving
Kym, what do you do all day on non racing days? Isn't it a bit boring to stay such a long time of the year in a hotel? Especially with covid
Produce videos from the hotel at the moment.
Pretty good pronunciation of Köszönöm ;) how is your “egészségedre”? Most my English speaking friends struggle with that one.
I have no idea what that word sounds like or means
@@KymIllman it means “cheers” I thought some of the locals would try to teach you that. A lot of people that visited Hungary usually test it out on me if they remember to say it correctly.
They did us bad by leaving out George Russell at Mercedes. that broke my heart what they did to our boy. Toto wolf has blood on his hands
They did show him getting a "flat tire" , George will get Lewis's seat soon.
(from a long term fan perspective it's just lacking depth)
The lack of coverage concerning the end racism campaign I found to be extremely disappointing. only having the last 5 min of the last episode dealing with the matter, did not do it justice.
Thank you for your thorough response
i saw kym on the first episode
You sure did
I'd love a more realistic, factual representation of the sport and bts.
If it just shot timelapse I guess that would be possible but we can’t shoot video
Thumbs up!!!
What was the story with the measuring tape in Vettels car when he came back into the pits? Do you think a mechanic did it on purpose? 🤔
I knew nothing about that
I could write paragraphs on how I feel about DTS but I'll keep it short.
Thanks for your thoughts
Kym what's your favorite moment in DTS season 3?
Grosjean emerging from the flames. .
@@KymIllman also just curious, were you able to make a cameo at the Australian GP in the first episode?
i knew the sports but not a fan. But Drive to Survive season 1 changed all of it.
good to hear
Hi Kym I love your vids. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Anto is super underrated as a driver and kimi is popular so i cant see why they dont film with them
I don’t think Kimi gives them too much to work with though
@@KymIllman Anto would be a laugh for an episode though. Hes a good driver with little supporters outside of Italy but he could probably gain some fans if they showed how funny and nice he is
they missed a lot of good thing however it was still a great series
Unfortunately we got to see a bit more of a Valttteri Bottas than we wanted to see.
we’re all adults though
I’m not complaining about it 😍😂
I want to see all the footage, not the edited version..
For some reason didn’t think this season wasn’t as good as the first two. Not sure why. Definitely didn’t need the last 6 min of episode 10...that’s just my opinion and probably not a popular one
I loved as I was not at the tracks last year so at least I caught up on what I missed
@@KymIllman that’s a great point Mr Illman! Hopefully this year is better for you and then 2022 get more fans back at all the tracks
You should not greet people in their native language. In my experience, they just assume you speak it, and start talking to you.
Did you said "Grazzi" in Maltese?
Italian Grazie but if it covers Malta, great
Maybe I should get Netflix so I can catch up
Call just try one month free trial
Don't most people under 25 use their parents/households Netflix? So it kind of misrepresents the audience figures.
perhaps
1:12 homes even with their bums
A lot of young people are using their parents’ Netflix accounts.
I'm certain that if I had just watched Drive To Survive for the first time without knowing much about the sport I'd now think:
1. Carlos and Lando are frenemies.
2. Albon is a crybaby that can't cope with the pressure of F1.
3. Gasly is a God and only Redbull is to blame for his rought times (which might be true but wouldnt that make 2. untrue?)
4. Charles is disrespectful towards Seb.
5. I'd also think Grosjean was dead for like 10 minutes before they showed him getting out of the car.
6. Ferrari was 12-13th the whole year (when in actuality Seb scored a podium and some good finishes and Charles scored 2 podiums and so many great finishes and carried the team for almost the entire year)
The use of heavy editing to dramatize situations, the fake team radios or commentators has to GO.
thanks to you too for your thorough analysis. Other subscribers would enjoy your comments as much as I did.
I personally don’t like drive to survive because I think it is too over dramatised
I don't have a problem with that
Thanks for responding
Wow 5th, earliest I've been lol
With some application and forward planning you could be 1st
This season was the worst out off all other seasons overly magazined and missing arguably the best race of the season and much more
I disagree
Drive to survive is a bit overdramatic for my taste. I used to watch F1 religiously with my father when schumi was dominant and boy those fights with Mika was something else! I fill that the same tyres for all and the no refuel rule killed the excitement for me and my father. The early years of Hamilton and redbull was exciting as well but the Mercedes redbull domination and the use of DRS made the sport boring.
It's a reality sports show
