I got some Carbon Fiber cloth, but it turned out not to be a type where I could harvest CF fibers or strips like you do. So last night, I mixed up some epoxy and used the dauber sponge to wet a strip of the fabric along the cut end. I basically made a section of prepreg. It turned out great. After wetting it, I debulked it, and it turned out great. It measured 0.014" thick, and it will be easy to cut 1 CM strips or whatever size I need.
sounds good! You'll still need some tow that can conform to the leading edge .

Thanks for taking to the time to share all this. I haven't flown gliders to over 20 years now, but really enjoyed it. Totally nuts seeing as how we've been living on a farm for the past 15 so I even have my own flying fields! I think a 1M DLG is just what I need. "Handlaunch" was just getting going back then. And I was working towards having the stuff to do foam cutting and vacuum. We live south of Ottawa so it's also great to have a Canadian perspective as sourcing supplies can sometimes be more of a challenge.
I'm on the second run through of your videos and look forward to what's to come.

Good morning, I realized that in my garage, I have a roll of 6 mil greenhouse plastic that is brand new. I'm wondering if it might work for mylars if it's waxed with 3 coats of Partall #2? Do you think that might work? I'm thinking it would work for vacuum bagging. I just need to come up with fittings, etc. Could you let us know what equipment you have like vacuum pump, etc. I am planning to use our Food Saver for these first wings, I hope that will work out. Do you buy tube type bags and then seal the ends with acrylic latex caulk? Where do you get your bags and material for mylars? Sorry for all the questions. I am 77 and flew RC planes in the past, but this DLG technology is a whole new ballgame. Peace
good morning. Plastic sheeting is measured in mils. One mil is equal to .001" . So your plastic is roughly .006" thick.
The material I use for the wing mylars is .75mm thick (or about .030") and is the thickest I can use comfortably.
I've tried allot of plastic for vacuum bagging...lol and I found polypropylene (PPE) is about the best. I got mine
from a company called " ePlastics". Thicker material = better finish quality when vacuum bagging.
I made my vacuum pump out of and old bar fridge I picked up at a yard sale. I like using it because it is very quiet, and it's wired to a vacuum switch that turns it on if pressure drops.
Because I know you'll ask, the vacuum switch is part# F-4200-X30 and the vendor is "Airtrol"

I do use a FoodSaver type bag that I picked up on-line. Comes in a wide roll.
I found the best seal for the ends of the bag is good ole latex caulking.

Realy nice job i tried it i used 24 g fiber glass put epoxi resin and put milars on it an put it into vacum bag after a day i checked on it peeld of the milars an the fiber glass didnt stick i could peel it of next time i used more epoxi it sticke but 45%didnt if i use even more epoxi it would be aout weight limit A FILOS used same weight fiber equal to epoxi but i had to use wai more dont know where is the problem
hmmmm..could be many things. First, make sure you removed all the fuzz from the wing cores.
Could be you need to mix more epoxy (remember, the roller absorbs alot) and we de-bulk anyways.
Might be you vacuum is not strong enough.

I found the material for the wing mylars at www.eplastics.com ,
Make sure you choose the smooth one-side option, as it produces that gloss finish.
@@amonus-air2160 thanks for the link. Which plastic did you use, there are so many to choose from that look similar. I'm used to using traditional bagging mylar, it's to thick for small wings and tail surfaces. I plan on building a 1 meter dlg like yours. Thanks
you should definitely use the Polypropylene Sheets. The one I used was:

For smaller items, I've found a thick polypropylene sheet protector at the Dollar Store.
Mould release wax is always recommended.
Don't know about using the toilet paper as paper towels would have been better to use in my opinion for soaking up the excess glue.
yes, paper towels would soak it up, unfortunately too much in my experience. You still want to leave enough resin for a good lamination.
What number hardener are you using? Its just out of shot! I'm wondering what I should shoot for as far as "pot life" and "working time" thanks!

Thanks for the question. I'm using the West 207 hardener. It provides a nice clear finish. However, I also started using tint in my resin, so clear finish doesn't matter. Let's me use a less expensive product. (Rayplex)
Could you do just one side at a time? That way when you adjust the top or bottom side, it would not disturb the other side.
yes, l try to get the bottom perfect, but the top is difficult, for me anyway . Thanks for watching

@@amonus-air2160 Your walkthrough of your pump made me rethink my pump purchase... :( Not a big deal, and I will keep the hvac pump because you never know... I did find a nice(ish) Gast DAA 1/2 hp pump on ebay. If it needs a rebuild, I can do that. Your videos are an inspiration, thanks :)
I'm curious. I saw another video where a guy merely used a vacuum bagging machine used for food storage to vacuum bag glider wings. Do you see any problems with that method?
Hi...I don't have any first hand experience with those machines so l can't say if one is better or worse. Both methods will work, but l can tell you that mine cost around $50 but to make. Thanks for the question.😎👍
@@amonus-air2160 I guess the food storage vacuum bagger would be cheaper as long as one could sneak it out of the kitchen without the wife noticing. 😊
"Prepreg" spars? Wjhat do you mean?
"Prepreg" is the common term for a reinforcing fabric which has been pre-impregnated with a resin, in this case an epoxy resin. As a result, they are far easier to handle, all be it more expensive as well.

Hi. I originally bought it from a place called ACP Composites. I'm not sure if they still carry it in stock, so maybe call them up for an alternative.
I've done some searching and have found the vacuum switch.
