Here is my issue with above and below $1.90. Homeless people in LA might probably be able to beg on the streets and earn more than $2 a day, does it mean they have been lifted from the extreme poverty? On the other hand, if Chinese living in Rural China. They have family living in their own home, lands to grow foods, have running water, electricity and afford to send their kids to school but they only earn less than $1 a day, does it mean they are worse off than homeless people in LA? Is that how poverty is supposed to be measured?
Right! Defining extreme poverty in the US is controversial. The U.N. estimated 18M Americans live in extreme poverty, - 12K or less for a family of four. There are gov programs though that aren’t taken into consideration low income housing, food stamps and Medicaid. The conservative think tank Heritage Foundation said the U.N. figures were grossly inaccurate and said it was 200K based on
BTW, any homeless in LA can find a job if he wants, also just by begging he makes more money than Chinese in rural areas would dream of. There are many families that have no land, have no clean water, or food to eat. They catch Rats to kill them and eat them. That's the truth, a truth that CCP hides, but anyone that has travelled inside China, knows.
@@allentoyokawa9068 Wow what a great take! Poor farmers can't afford to live in cities? Who would have thought? Poor Japanese farmers can't afford to live in Japanese cities. Poor American farmers can't afford to live in American cities. What a revelation!
As an observer, I'm very glad China has put in resources on lifting its poorest out of extreme poverty. Thus far, when China sets a goal it eventually reaches it. The west and others have not done what China has done. If you look around the world, including the western nations you'll see there are a lot of very poor people, and homelessness is getting really bad. So, instead of wasting time being critical of China's accomplishment, how about get to work on solving your problems at home.
@@allentoyokawa9068 It's true, as of this year China alleviated extreme poverty. The world knows that, this is no secret. You'd probably prefer to believe "Iraq had WMD" story.
You cannot simply use money to judge the poverty level. The rural Chinese people do have the medical care/ insurance covers 95% of medical fee and they can grow their own foods on their land. No taxes. Their children can go to school without paying any tuition, and school covers food for the students from poor families. The most important thing is Chinese leaders really trying hard to help people in poverty. The government have done a lot to improve people’s living situation. That’s better than most leaders in the world.
Regardless how UN defined extreme poverty, it is generally recognized that China has elevated 800 millions out of extreme poverty. More importantly this channel ignores the fact that China has been the only country in the world made poverty eradication as a national policy. Even the richest country has done nothing to slow the growing homeless poor. China at least has made the first step which is better than no step in other part of the world. Credit, not criticism, should be given where it dues.
Classic answer for those insecure of recognising china to say other parts shouldn’t criticise. Great job on helping improve so many lives, but credit needs to be carefully given when such bold claims of eradicating poverty are made. I’m not comparing any country to china, but that statement alone from any country is questionable

In China, the government provides healthcare for farmers who usually are the poor levels. Farmers only need to pay for 45 dollars a year to enjoy the national healthcare. The compulsory education in China is free with free meals, for college, China provides non interest loan to students and scholarships for poor students which can support the tuition and costs of living. In China, no one lost chances to go to university because of poor. Government will cover everything to try to help poor students. The tuition fee for university is about 800 dollars a year and doom fee is 180 dollars a year for Chinese students. The government also supply the fee for meals for the students, students usually only need to pay 1 dollars per meals( poor students receive scholarships). China also provides scholarship for students who wanna studying abroad if the students are excellent enough. China also provides free houses for extreme poor people and disabled people. This explains why the family housing rate is 95% in China, ranking the top in the world.

I visited poor villagers in China 10 years ago. China has certainly lifted millions out of poverty more than any country in the world. Far more than America and other countries. America life span has persistently going down where as Chinese lifespan in poor regions are going up. America spent most reserves in wars rather than in health.

The Chinese government will provide free vocational training and job recommendation to the poor. I work in a non-profit vocational training school, which provides basic job skills training to the poor. In our province, there is a preferential policy that every poor person (including the unemployed, freelancers, retired soldiers and their families, graduating students, farmers, poor families, the disabled and their families) who get a certificate of achievement will be given a reward of at least 1000 or 1200 yuan (about 140 ~ 170 US dollars) by the government. The training period is about 15 days. In addition, they are given 30 to 50 yuan (about $4 to $8) per day for food and transportation during the training period. After the training, we will often forward recruitment information and advertisements to the trainees who have participated in the training. This is just one of the preferential policies involved in my work, and there are many other preferential policies for the poor that I do not know about. The standard of extrem poverty is 630 USD a year. It's disposable family income (after tax and insurance) divided by all family members. My observation: India and Japan share one thing: they mimic western model quite much, expecting that they'll one day be powerful like the West. But we know in the last 2 decades, the West has been on a steady decline (especially after Crisis 2008). This Covid pandemic wreaks havoc on western countries AND countries that are vastly inspired by the West (in this case, India and Japan). As a result, India/Japan have been hit hard, too. Western model encourages "laissez faire" and effectively ties the hand of government; the social structure is also weak; the political structure is fragile and superficial with blaming, finger-pointing and short-term visions. In contrast, China is doing extremely well, which potentially damages India/Japan's very identity; it's like: "so it means we mimicking the West turn out to be wrong after half century. The time on the implementation can't be paid back. There is no way back". Therefore, India/Japan have vast incentives to demonize China's achievement, even from their top leaders, which will trickle down to small person, like Yuki.
Japan is one of best off concerning Covid-19. Ditto for Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan who also operate on a decidedly Western economic model.
China has more poor people than the US even has people. Making $500/year is nothing to be bragging about. How many vacations homes and offshore bank accounts do the CCP leaders have? Dare you even ask?

Einar Tangen needs to offer debating courses for Chinese diplomats and correspondents. Most are just too meek and lack confidence, always on the defensive and being walked all over. Time to be more aggressive and offensive to win the arguments.
regardless of your debating skill, the reality on the ground is more important, China is facing a serious challenge that is almost impossible to overcome when it comes to semi-conductor stranglehold, and China can have as many greater debater as you want, but it doesn't change the fact that China will lose the tech-race if China don't find a way to secure its semi-conductor industry a steady supply-chain. China can pour trillions into chips and semi-conductor R&D but it's not a money problem, its a talent pool problem. China lags very behind in this sector and it's going to take decades to catch-up regardless of investment.
Eatern philisophy is as confucius said, "Leadership Lessons from Confucius: actions speak louder than words". Asians compared to westerners are really timid to speak up, they think it is better to show it. Asians traditionally give deference to superiors and are discouraged to speak up in meetings, they are encouraged to speak behind the scene. Westerners from childhood are raised to speak up no matter where and with who is infront of him. So westerners get to be confident talking in front of crowds, easterners let their superiors do the talking and just give their contribution behind the scene, thus not many of them even some of their leaders get to be eloquent.

@@tedaspane1493 "many best and the brightest Chinese scientists don't want to work in China." This may be true, but i don't see how you make the causation between this, and the 'control freak' aspect. Look at silicon valley now, its almost all India entrepreneurs working for the USA, not India. The direct relationship I see is that those talents are often educated abroad (Ivy leagues/Cambridge etc), and a lot of them started to like local culture and local social dynamic, so they want to stay in their second-homeland to contribute. Mind you, this is why US, Canada, Australia etc (the migration driven nations) can prosper, because they provide very good environment for highly talented individuals to thrive. American people do not even understand what communism is today! I have not seen anyone get something that's so well documented, studied, and written about, so horribly wrong. The American people don't understand what communism is, they hear the word "communism", and that's it for the American. It must all be wrong, must be brutal, must be criminal, and must be murderous. I find reading the Americans talking about socialism and communism fascinating stuff. They just don't understand that they're actually supporting what is wrong with this world, and all the while demonising something that was thought about as a new way of life, to avoid all these problems we all find ourselves with today.
I often find myself asking myself, just how is it possible in 2021, for anyone, let alone an entire society, to get something that's so easily looked up so easy to learn all about, so completely wrong? Communism has been studied, looked at from every view point imaginable, and is so well written about, yet still, so many have it completely wrong. But do you know what's even worse? And this I really do struggle to understand, but even when you take the time to tell these people what communism is, they'll ignore it? And they'll call you a liar, and they'll carry on saying the same things over and over again! Even when you show them the truth, they'll continue to repeat what they've always wrongly thought. And that to me, is nothing short of outright idiocy on a whole brand-new level of stupidity, a level I really don't believe this world has ever witnessed before. Communism is a system, a way of life that's meant to be fair and equal to all. Why would anyone want to be against that? I just wonder what must be going through their own minds, as they all sit and type what they think of communism, yet they so obviously don't understand, that pure communism is as free as it gets. Why would they all want to demonise something that they so clearly don't even understand? They've all been brought up being taught communism Is bad, brutal, and tyrannical, when the truth is, the only thing wrong with communism was the so-called corrupt leaders/dictators, who abused their positions of power and trust they were only supposed to use to bring in the reforms needed, and to lead the people to a pure communist society/state. And therefore, obviously, it was those corrupt criminal leaders/dictators who destroyed the whole concept/Idea/philosophy of communism from its beginning, meaning It was never even given a chance! We've never seen a pure communist society. None that tried ever got there. It ended up seeing the people who showed any discontent, brutally punished, murdered, by basic criminals. Communism is not responsible for any of what those criminal dictators did, and nor are the people who lived through it. The entire ideology of communism OPPOSES those leaders actions! But quite astonishingly, they don't even understand that by hating communism (something they really do not understand) is exactly the same as them supporting capitalism (that's created the worlds 1% elite). That's how brainwashed these American people really are today, they'd rather have a 1% of the population, with over 90% of the wealth, than they would see the people much more equal? It's utter madness. And it's all due to such a serious lack of any sort of education, and on such an enormous scale, as all Americans think the same. China has a Communist government, yet they run an almost capitalist system (only with one big difference, a good difference). China have been able to watch and learn from all the mistakes made by the West, giving them a massive advantage to get things right without having to make the same mistakes as the (we're soon going to find out) failed West. The biggest difference you'll find between the West and China, is that China will never allow anyone, any company, business, or corporation to become influential to the leading party. Nothing and nobody will ever be able to dictate government policy. Not by having lots of money, or by being a billion dollar business or corporation, and not by being a member of the Elite as we've created and now got in the West. In the West, we've created a 1% of the population, with over 90% of the wealth, and that has seen the power shift away from governments, and into the hands of individuals and corporations! And as we're very soon going to find out, that has seen us in the West fail. China knows this, and that alone will see China succeed, as it's seen us in the West fail. Americans and even many Brits should all watch a film you can find for free online called "Young Karl Marx", it's a great way to begin to learn all about communism, and the reality rather than the Anti Communist US governments policy of propaganda and outrageous lies. You learn how and why the entire concept came about and why it became so popular, yet today it must be the most misunderstood political system in the world's history. And mainly due to the massive enormous actions of propaganda and outrageous lies told by western governments, who feared for themselves and feared losing all they were creaming from societies with criminal ill-gotten gains. Massive expenditure was used to suppress and demonise communism, and so much so that even the name communism itself, creates fear in some today.

All residents have a roof over their heads in communism. Poverty? I don't think so. Those that chose to stay in remote regions without roads is of their own choice/lifestyle. The West views that as poverty. (Price of freedom to be exact.).
With all the terrible continuous floods suffered by China because of equally incessant downpours, resulting in the devastation of agricultural and other important products/crops, plus the deadly pandemic that slowed down the world's economy, China has been almost reduced into extreme poverty. Millions of chinese were struggling against poverty.
From sometimes appeared video comparing poverty between USA and China. It seems to me these poverty are not comparable. When I saw people living in the country doing hard work just to live, it reminds me my grandmother: no running water in the house, no electricity, growing rabbits with collected grass and growing vegetables... This was poverty but not the ignominious poverty of US State: streets covered with garbage, wandering drug addicts fallinf down after 5 meters and disabled persons without help and all these families living in their only property: their car!

This is armchair journalism. The presenter has done very little in-depth study and just put three individuals together to do a show. For starter the criteria for poverty by UN is very narrow and do not factor in sustainability. So uni-dimensional. Whereas China has defined poverty alleviation as providing a roof over the family, clean water, opportunity for sustainable earning by providing needed infrastructure (roads and digital connectivity), education for the next generation and ecological healthy environment. Remarkably the Chinese people has done it the hard way instead of just throwing money at the problem. Every level of the Chinese society has bought into the mission and CPC constantly conduct fact checking by having trained academics who go on the ground to measure these things. They are usually university graduates and young people who verify the effectiveness of the programs. Come on, man! Do your background work! Such sloppy work from Al-Jazerra.
We're talking of 12 yuan per day. You can get yourself a very small bottle of water and a piece of bread with those money. I think that even if you double to 24 yuan per day your life is still extremely poor. Lowering the bar is not the solution for celebrating achievements.

The best meaningful point so far as I move across the comments.

Right! Defining extreme poverty in the US is controversial. The U.N. estimated 18M Americans live in extreme poverty, - 12K or less for a family of four. There are gov programs though that aren’t taken into consideration low income housing, food stamps and Medicaid. The conservative think tank Heritage Foundation said the U.N. figures were grossly inaccurate and said it was 200K based on
Exactly.

This well explains why Chinese family housing is 95%, higher than most western developed countries.

What China has done is incredible. Amazing economy and rise. But poverty gone is extreme even Western Europe now has poverty

So feel free to tell us all about these big bad deeds you must see coming from China? Did you see the same thing coming from Libya? Or maybe Iraq? No?, well how about the Ukraine? Syria maybe? Do you see China supplying weapons to terrorists or arming criminals in Ukraine? Nope, I don't. Do you see China stealing other countries resources while invading, murdering, and stealing all over the world? Nope, I don't. Do you see China building illegal military bases in others countries to steal and syphon off their oil? Nope, I don't. But very clearly you see something about China you don't like? Tell us all about it? But remember while doing so, not to get caught up involved in the reams of propaganda we see coming from the USA endlessly? But the facts are all we should all only be interested in, right?

How about the country side

It's probably unwise to measure extreme poverty via $$ you make a day or a year.

1. Have a roof over your head.
2. Have opportunity for a job.
3. Have food on the table.
4. Have running electricity, running water and plumbing/working toilets.
5. Have reasonable general health care.

@@derek123wil0 One tenet of a socialist revolution is that every citizen receives the same wage. Xi Jinping is an utter hypocrite -he implies that he is just the same as the peasants he is visiting in the countryside by wearing a Mao suit on his tours (actually a Sun Yatsen jacket). He wears a jacket that costs next to nothing to make while his relatives have millions of dollars in off-shore accounts. People only want to join the Party because it is a gateway into what is essentially an 'old-boys' network'. Being a government official is a much higher rung on the ladder and is practically a license to print money. I've had farmers in China beg me to take their grievances to court -unfair compensation for land retaken for development. Developers get rich. The officials get rich. And for the peasants, it's a lottery, depending just on how corrupt the officials are. Some farmers will find themselves with a nice apartment and a new BMW. Others will barely survive. $1.90 extreme poverty level is already PPP adjusted based on the 15 poorest countries in the world. Since China is not in the 15 poorest countries in the world its extreme poverty threshold is higher not lower. North Korea should start to adopt the Chinese, Russian and Vietnamese style economic system, a free market economy with closer foreign cooperation rather than a full-on planned economy with excessive control. Wealth can't effectively be created in any other way. But Kim Jong Un's totalitarian regime is naturally afraid of change (might lose their grip on power, the people may wake up), even though they've likely been pressured by their friendly allies, China, Iran, Russia and others.
Congratulations to China for wiping out absolute poverty. Rejecting Maoism was certainly a clever step.
Just do more automation and robotics to solve labor force issues

It is easy to criticize when you live in ivory house. Consider China also provide infrastructures, housing, health care, and education for the poor, it is just not about money.
So this clearly show the hypocrisy of the west especially US and Europe. On one hand, you criticize to say China is poor and need to do more to help the poor. On the other hand, you say China is rich and should open up for US and European market. And China should pay for this and that.
At least they made a real effort in eliminating extreme poverty. US still has over 19 million in extreme poverty. India probably has even more.

For all the people that have never been to China: there is no such things as slum or slum people in this country. It does not mean that people are not suffering from poverty, even if actually all the basics needs (especially food) are fulfilled.
Well! The world can’t denied China has really done remarkable achievements ..
