Can the Dream of Supersonic Flight Survive the Collapse of Aerion? - AIN

  • Aerion had booked orders for its AS2 supersonic business jet and secured the backing of aerospace experts such as Boeing, GE Aviation, and Spirit AeroSystems. But that wasn’t enough, and when it failed to secure much-needed new investment to bring the aircraft to market, the company was forced to shut down. AIN senior editor Kerry Lynch explains what went wrong and where the aviation industry’s supersonic ambitions may go from here.

How was Aerion ever close to making "Supersonic Flight" a reality? They never built a prototype, never tested engines, and only showed lofty artist renderings.

Not just that, but the pandemic hit the aviation industry (non-military anyway) super hard. I don't know why anyone is shocked by this news, I would have been more shocked to hear they survived.

And then UNITED orders a bunch of BOOM Supersonic planes:)

It shut down?! Nooo!! I was super hyped to see one!! 😭😭😭
Even Elon Musk had some on order!!

I suppose what really helped Concorde with regulators, was the UK and French government, putting their political weight behind the project.

Aerion was never going to fly but I do believe that there is a market for supersonic travel. EVTOL is a fad.

Wasn't the biggest issue the design itself? They underwent a major design because they needed to pivot towards as a "zero boom design". Even Boom Supersonic is making this same mistake right now. From what I can see right now, only Exosonic (their entire design is built on zero-boom) and Hermeus (they are working on hypersonic jets that operate on a similar design) are actually going to end up getting anything done, because they have the right foundation.
Also, I'm a huge fan of SSTs and I would definitely live to experience this one day, but today's mainline global private jets are basically traveling at near Mach 1 anyhow. So even for companies that do end up creating SSTs, it's going to be a challenge for them to market their 2x to 3x more expensive planes unless they are a magnitude of order greater than anything else on the market (aka if they travel at 2x to 3x the speed of sound in greater luxury).

The 747 with a cocktail lounge and grand piano, the SST. I’ve seen a lot of concepts on paper, but until I see a fifth prototype; I do not believe anything. Why did the not work with Embraer or Gulfstream? They also have production capacity and Embraer has strong political clout in South America. They are becoming a global player.

No demand for hypersonic flight? I'd LOVE to fly anywhere in the world within a matter of hours/min. I'm tall, hate commercial travel, hate just sitting there in the air waiting to get wherever, especially long haul. 19 hr flights? No thanks!

there's a way to revive Aerion back to it's lost glory!!! but investors will demand for complete take over with smaller investment!!! Aerion will get the funds they need but a lot more will be at stake!!! meaning the challenge at Aerion will prevail until their supersonic jets are in revenue service!!!

Their whole reason for throwing in the towel sounds like bullshit to me. Something else is going on.

Yeah, they did not have the technical ability to build an aircraft. That is why they were so dependent on having Industry partners. They wanted a larger company to come in and hold their hand across the finish line.

I guess we will stick to Gulfstream then

Supersonic flight is inefficient, unsustainable, available only for the rich and paints a picture of aviation, that is totally careless about their environment. Everyone loves the technical challenge, i get it, but unless you can do that with hydrogen... it's a ridiculous idea in a planet that has to secure the survival of it's younger generations. No one should have the illusion of themselves being so important to have to travel faster then others and causing so much damage. 💙

When business to business communications can be done far quicker and more efficiently via the Internet, as shown during the current pandemic, where is the justification for supersonic business travel? Other than as a vanity driven market for the ultra rich.
As for supersonic airline travel, again where's the justification? We've seen how quickly the airlines spread Sars-Cov-2 to almost every country on the planet at subsonic speeds. Do we really need even faster modes of pathogen transfer?
The aerospace and airline industries are at a point where they really need to re-examine the very fundamentals of their existence. But while they (and governments) remain in denial about their central role in causing the current global crisis, that seems a long way from happening.

There's no global crisis. Global warming and freezing are natural event that have happened many times before, it will happen again and millions of people will die from all the extreme climate changes. Earthquakes, volcanoes, super storms. Is normal for the planet to go into Ice ages and warm up again.

As long as humans exist there will be a need and desire for face to face communication. The right to travel has nothing to due with vanity.
