  • I discovered a radiator hose was damaged on my Gen 1 Mini Cooper S. I found that the hose had been rubbing on a relatively sharp piece of plastic. I show you how I did this simple mod.

Bravo! We were correcting a radiator fan problem in our R53 Cooper S (the well known resistor burnout issue) when we noticed the same rub spots in the radiator hose. Your video confirms our suspicion that the sharp projections on the fan housing were causing the injury to the hose. Good thing we caught it before the hose blew out! I think this problem is specific to particular builds, since I have seen other photos where the radiator hose is routed more towards the rear under the intake manifold. Like your Mini, the bleeder connector in ours is a straight-through fitting. In the models with different hose routing, the bleeder connector is a right-angle fitting.

It seems that only the 'S' variant has this rubbing problem. The coolant hoses had to be rerouted closer to the fan to make room for the intercooler for the turbo on the 'S'.

Thanks for sharing your comments. Yes lucky we found the both problem without getting stuck in the middle of nowhere with a cooked engine.
