I'm glad Tec Toy's success 30 years ago inspired so many Brazilians to get into 8- and 16-bit gaming. Now Brazilians are paying it forward by making all these amazing retro-style games.
That and also because developing 3D games here is still too expensive, since we got absolutely no help from our government (and by seeing Brazilian taxes/prices for anything videogame related, you now how prohibitive game development is). That's why most well-known Brazilian games are 2D, like Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight, Kaze and the Wild Masks , 99 Vidas, Dandara, Dungeon Drafters, Chroma Squad, Knights of Pen & Paper, Dandy Ace, the other Joymasher games (Blazing Chrome, Oniken, Odallus), Horizon Chase Turbo, Pixel Ripped 1989 and many others. And also games partially made by Brazilians, like Celeste, TowerFall and Pier Solar.
The president of Brazil said that he will promote the creation of Digital Games graduation course in Brazilian Federal Universities. I am studying digital games, but not for free :/.
Thanks for covering this! Like Cyber Shadow in 2021, these January retro style releases seem to get buried right away. They deserve a bigger spotlight.

Very nice to see games from brazilian developers getting proper recognition, anyone who ever thought about venturing into gaming development here knows it's not an easy road at all so good job! Can't wait for a physical release (even though it's probably coming by the hands of Limited Run, I wish they found a way to publish it locally like Aquiris managed to do with Horizon Chase Turbo)
I'm so glad DF is showing this game love. Had my eye on it when it was first announced a few years ago. I've been hyped for it and have been enjoying the hell out it. Hopefully more people check it out because there was no promotion for it.
This game reminds me of Hagane. And thank you for covering a Brazilian game! You have no idea how much this helps game development in here by showing it to a bigger audience while singing its praises.
Picked this up for PS5 on launch day. As a huge fan of both the Genesis and Shinobi, this game rocks. The Revenge of Shinobi is one of my all-time favorite games.
This brings me back. Revenge of Shinobi was one of my first Genesis games. Shinobi 3 and Shadowdancer were awesome as well, Shinobi 3 being my favorite. I'm glad games like this are still being made.
totally agree guys ! Revenge was way ahead of its time and the soundtrack WOW ! then shinobi 3 took it to another level remember my 11 year old selfs jaw hitting the floor at revenges intro at my mates house then getting the console soon after ......AMAZING !!
I haven't finished watching yet, but let me go on ahead and say Thank You for such an in-depth breakdown. I think it's really helpful for people to see what all goes into making games like these, so they have a better understanding that even though something doesn't have ILM quality 3d models and ray-traced sweat reflections, there's still an immense amount of work and care that goes into crafting these experiences for players. Also, I'd be remiss if I ain't mention that this game made me immediately think of Hagane for the SNES, in addition to the others you mentioned. Thank you again for highlighting these cool games that might've otherwise gone unnoticed!

I agree fully. There is that certain level of authenticity that is needed for a pixel art game to have that golden age feel. Joymasher hits that spot on.
Loved blazing chrome (even if I'm trash at it) , Moon Rider looked rad from the minute I saw the first trailer. Love that you're able to make vids like this showcasing all the tech John, hope it inspires people everywhere to try to make games themselves.
If you go for repeating play through of each level and you'll soon master them without losing a single life. It's built on the same philosophy as 80's and 90's arcade games where everything starts of very difficult and punishing, but continue playing it and you'll eventually 1cc it much sooner than expected.
I'm playing the new game Chained Echoes right now. A pixel art RPG in the style of the older Final Fantasy and Suikoden games made by one guy. It's really good and I recommend it to anyone who likes RPG games. And it's only 25 bucks for a full game.
Back in the day, we actually did the majority of work on paper and with text files to define the gameplay or simply hand-coding it in Assembly. All 3 of the first Strike games (Desert, Jungle and Urban) were all done on graph paper and data statements entered, by hand. Painful is an understatement, but I prefer the games I make to have that hand-built soul vs. procedural generation.
MOONRIDER being on amazon luna and not xbox is pretty hilarious. Maybe it will show up on xbox next year. So much for a gaming monopoly when stuff like that is still common.
I've been using Gamemaker Studio 2 for a while now. Currently working on a Super Metroid style of game. I love GMS2! I'm doing all of the programming via GML. I'm also doing a lot of the sprite work and sound design as well. The basic game engine is practically finished now. Going to work on more enemies next, and then start level design.
