Katha, I am an engineer working at ITER in France. I was also actively involved with the people designing the very same lithium breeder you talked about in this video. As an insider in the field I watched tons of videos on Fusion for the public, but still, I did like your video! Keep it up 💪

Amro, Thank you very much. I really appreciate it. 😀 Most of all thank you for doing the real work of pushing fusion power forward. I visited ITER in 2010. There was not much to see, but they were already giving guided tours around plain fields. 😄

Your videos convey you have put in a considerable amount of time and effort to make this content. I am taking my first steps toward solar and geothermal for our home. I do not believe this is a smart financial decision, rather than a responsible position for living our lives. Here is hoping for a more sustainable existence. Thanks again for helping us keep thinking!

Thanks for saying that we have to act on climate change now with the existing technology. We can't wait for a fusion reactor to become technically viable. I'm not anti-nuclear for baseload power production but there is better safer fission technology already possible with reactors like molten salt based breeders. We have to continue to build out solar, wind , hydroelectric and tidal energy to quickly stop adding fossil fuel carbon to the atmosphere and then some day we may have sustainable fusion.

If you want to look at the economics of fusion energy why not compare its complexity with that of a fission reactor? The latter has a very simple and controllable energy source, no vacuum system, no breeder, no neutron multiplier, no superconductors, no superconductor shielding, and easy removal of components (i.e. fuel assemblies), just to name a few. One could add the difficulties of tritium breeding and handling given the ultra fast diffusivity of tritium and the absence of good permeation barriers.

Great idea. Fission has made impressive progress over the past decade. Generation IV reactors avoid long-lived radioactive waste. However, this still means half-lives of up to 200,000 years. To put this in perspective, the human species evolved 300,000 years ago. Thanks for watching!

You say a great idea, but an up to date assessment of the expected cost of fusion energy is probably not high on the community’s wish list. However, the European Fusion Development Agency published an assessment in 2005 giving the estimated cost of 0.14 Euros per kilowatt-hour, some three times the cost of energy from fission at that time. The capital cost was well hidden in the report but one could deduce that it was a factor of five or six times that of fission.

@@johnh6245 I think we can agree that comparing current let alone future economic viability of technologies is difficult given the unknowns. What we do know is that we urgently have to invest in climate-neutral technology and divest from fossils. Long term this is equals the overall economic choice. 😊

@@johnh6245 The truth is there can be no honest estimate of nuclear fusion electricity, because there are still too many uncertainties, but you are right that it wouldn't compete with fission. I think the possible advantage of fusion would be the reduction of long lifetime nuclear waste. Still, breeder reactors in Gen IV generation might also be able to solve that problem. Maybe LFTR reactors? They have always sound to me as a good alternative to fusion.

Have you looked at the deuterium-deuterium reaction mediated by a titanium or rubidium lattice?

Thank you for informative video. Just one question. What do you think about fusion using Helium-3. I believe Helion's planned reactor uses He-3 which results in a proton which they plan to use directory to generate electricity and by-pass the traditional thermo-mechanical steam turbine route.

@@NetZeroTech sure, but this is not imitation, it is theft. Your countless hours of effort taken for nothing so that somebody else's channel can get views, generate ad revenue, whatever. Hi Matt, I filed the copyright infringement today. It took me a while, as I prioritised other matters. I don't think it's a big deal, since the infringing channel didn't make any money off of the video and not very many people watched it. Thank you very much for letting me know. I appreciate it. It makes me wonder how many infringements, I'm missing. How are you? Katharina
