    I had a hedgehog named Malik, he was pretty antisocial, it took almost a half a year until he started getting used to me, me and my girlfriend had bought him when he was already in his teens, in terms of hedgehog life spans at least. And he was neglected in the store, and was the only one left for weeks, and we knew he wouldn't be bought so well. We bought him, he was an amazing pet for 3 years until cancer took him from us, even though he wasn't the most pleasant hedgehog ever, I still loved him, and still miss him to this day.

    I got my hedgie in February. She is my first hedgehog however she was mistreated before I bought her. She’s about two years old and she didn’t run or eat much when I first got her. Her wood chips were all dirty and the bottom of the terrarium was covered in poop. She was very aggressive when I first got her due to her never being handled before. Now I can hold her and play with her. She likes to lay beside me during the day as I read and she sleeps.

      How did you get your hedgehog to become more comfortable with you? Mine is a few years old and had at least two previous owners who didn’t seem to socialize with her much when she was younger. I want to bond with her so she can feel more comfortable around me, but every time I get near her hideout, she tends to ball up and hiss-granted I just got her, so I am sure she’s still adjusting to the new environment and the times I have chosen to check on her haven’t always been the best with her sleep schedule either. I know her temperament won’t change overnight, especially since her last owner said she’s super shy, but I am committed to her and would like to know what you’d recommend in order to facilitate that bonding process?

    I got a hedgehog because my friend's friend could no longer take care of theirs... And I'm so happy I got her. The poor thing was never held in her old home! She was well taken care of (kinda, they also didn't know she was missing an eye) and loved, but not handled at all.
    She was very grumpy for the first few days or so, but she quickly warmed up to me. I left an old teeshirt of mine that smelled like me and didn't have anything she could hurt herself with and she got my scent in no time. :)
    My sweet little Leela is such a joy, and she's come out of her ball!

    For me, I find it so strange to see hedgehogs in captivity like this, although they look well cared for. I had hedgehogs in my garden back in Ireland and they came there by their own choice. We used to leave food and water for them but they didn't consume much. They were friendly and got used to us. We could pick them up easily. In winter they used to hibernate, so we made boxes of hay for them and they would remain there until spring. They lived in between the trees and flowers in the garden and never went away. They could have gotten out easily if they had wanted to, as a stream ran by the garden and there were open spaces with only wire fencing as borders and no walls. Sometimes foxes would get in at night but hedgehogs don't need to fear them 'cos of their spikey defenses.

    • @sherlockdoyle2649
      @sherlockdoyle2649 9 років тому +3

      I used to pick up hedgehogs in London SW , Wimbledon/Putney etc.. They were quite tame even though they were wild. You may want to watch for fleas as they are almost a factory of fleas. Check yourself when you get home. Some mornings when I opened the door there would be a willing little fella waiting for a snack or three..Eventually I would give them names and later try and figure out who is who..

    • @JohnOShaughnessy
      @JohnOShaughnessy 9 років тому +2

      Sherlock Doyle Ha! I think the flea thing is urban life... the ones we had had no fleas at all.... probably in London people use flea collars on all their household pets so they've nowhere else to go :)

    We had a hedgehog family living underneath our wood veranda for a few seasons, they came out of hibernation every summer with a bunch of cubs, and they loooved cat food. They were wild but so nice and friendly to play with when at food-time. The cubs love to be scratched on their belly or under their chin while eating. They are lovely little fellas! Does a priceless "smacking" sound while eating too!

    I think it's kind of wrong to tell people to only buy a non aggressive hedgehog. You're saying mistreated hedgehogs are better off being neglected, than to be given love? My hedgehog Silver started off a bit timid, and he's still very scared after having him for a year, but I don't regret adopting him. I love seeing him happy and running on his wheel. He may not have opened up to me yet, but that doesn't bother me.

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  8 років тому +138

      SpongicX This just lets poor quality breeders keep breeding and selling. Quality breeders pets will be calm and tame. Not buying them cuts off the breeders who are doing the wrong thing. They mistreat and don't do what's best for the animals. Which is why your 1 year hedgehog is still scared, yet, all hedgehogs I sold at 3 months were socialized, tame, calm, & easy to handle.

    • @SpongicX
      @SpongicX 8 років тому +12

      I bought mine at a legal pet store in Burlington Iowa, and the workers there seem to show a lot of care and respect for their pets. Not all animals are born to have the same nature as others. You can't always blame an animal's behavior on whoever bred or sold them. I also only got my hedgehog when he was 3 months old, so he wasn't able to adapt to my home as early as some other hedgehogs may have.
      My hedgehog has matured a lot since back than. Although he is still huffy at times, the fact that he's able to quickly uncurl and lower his quills shows a lot of improvement. Hedgehogs are naturally scared creatures. I'd rather by a hedgehog from a legal pet store, than to buy one from a total stranger who may not have a legal permit to sell their hedgehogs. Plus, we never know how those hedgehogs are bred either, so it can go both ways. The pet store I bought mine from isn't a big industrial type petshop, it's a very small pet shop that sells mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, hedgehogs, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. They breed their animals, and don't sell them until they make sure the pets are old enough and healthy enough to be presented. They also sell food and nutrients for the animals. If they really didn't treat their animals well, then I don't see how their pets for sale are already in decent sized cages with a good supply of food and water.
      I read up on hedgehogs before buying mine, and I was warned it is better to trust authorized pet stores, than it is to trust some breeder selling them from their house, or through a delivery website.

    Wow, this bin is not even small, like some people are complaining. It's plenty big. We humans have bedrooms that are mostly small-medium sized, and we're fine. People always find something to complain about.

    • @jere473
      @jere473 8 років тому +49

      Are you confined to your bedroom your entire life? Sure he looks small and snug, but you have to take into consideration that a wild hedgehog typically roams between 10 - 20 hectares per year. Now you could argue that he's domesticated, so he doesn't need to roam that much, but would you keep a domesticated cat or a dog in a cage with the same proportions of body size to cage size? Of course you wouldn't.

      Melie92 I agree, plus hedgehogs mostly stay in their hide anyway. Like I don't have a hedgehog, but I want one, and my cousin has a guinea pig and he's always in his little box and he only comes out to eat.

      Melie92 you have a choice to leave your room and go outside. Something you hold captive and think it likes you don't have that choice. Its Stockholm Syndrome, it shares a mutual benefit with you, so it tolerates you at best. You don't think so leave the door open or animal on the ground see if it sticks around for you.

    1:32 thats the most terrible thing ive ever heard. I was a neglected child, beaten down, depressed, felt like i didnt belong anywhere, felt like i didnt have a purpose in life and that my life didnt matter all because everyone rejected me just like you're saying to do for pets who have been neglected. All i even wanted was for someone to hold and tell me they love me. I grew up in a family that treated me like i was an adopted child and never told me they loved me, always ignored me. I was always on my own and all i wanted was for someone to just show me they cared. And thats all animals want too. They wont trust you at first, no child or animal will thats been mistreated. They think you're just like everyone else. You have to prove that your different to them. And when you do. That child or animal will become unbelievably loyal, because it will fight to the death to keep what it tried so hard to get. Just show people and animals love. Thats all that we really want

      Kostas1601 I have read that when you first get a hedgehog they are very timid and will hiss because it's a new home and their scared. it's best to let them explore and slowly let them get used to you. plus they get grumpy when you wake them up. it's sad that the owner of this hedgehog keeps chasing after it only making it more scared and not giving the poor dear space. All this owner showed was what not to do with a hedgehog.

    • @merieller.4881
      @merieller.4881 8 років тому +1

      but to clearly answer the question you don't start playing or petting the hedgehog until they are used to you but you can hold a hedgehog on the first day. From what I have read Hedgehogs can be more timid about petting but it depends on the hedgehog but don't stress out one it can be bad for health. The best way to pet a hedgehog is let them smell you then pet head first and over the spines.

      Yeah, I've had over 50 hedgehogs. Not a single one has bitten. All depends on who bred them, how they were socialized and tamed when young, etc.. There are lots of bad breeders out there and people who neglect pets. So, as with any type of animal, it is a possibility. But, I agree, never been an issue for me either.

I know you saved it and are now attached; but, that hedghehog has lived it's whole life outdoors. Outside and living wild is what it knows. It's not fair to change its whole life and make it a pet.

      Nothing.

      Earthling1984 no i'm sure that there isn't anything bad about them i'm just curious as to what could possibly be the issue. what are people claiming is the problem? is it difficult for them to drink or something?

    • @likeastarbaby
      @likeastarbaby 8 років тому +1

      Earthling1984 also i'm curious about the fact that you said that they never bite but a lot of other people talk a lot about self anointing and that the hedgehogs will do it every time they encounter a new smell and its really painful even if it doesn't break the skin? its my understanding that this is a natural behaviour, have you really never encountered this before?

    • @earthling1984
      @earthling1984  8 років тому +5

      I've had zero problems with water bottles. People think it can chip their teeth. My 8 year old hedgehogs teeth are fine. Annointing doesn't involve biting. It's just them doing a weird lick to themselves. I have videos on this. I have never been bitten by a hedgehog.

    How do you clean the hedgie's cage? I haven't had one yet but I really want one, and I was thinking: Won't the poop mix with the bedding? How do you get rid of the poop?

    • @Kendorito
      @Kendorito 8 років тому +1

      ***** So am I supposed to replace the bedding everytime I clean the cage to get rid of the poop?
      Couldn't I train my hedgie to go to the potty?

    • @Kendorito

      ***** ..Yeah, thanks. I think now I'm just going to wait a few years until I'm on my own financially and I'll have a driver's license because irght now I'd anger the crap out of my parents to ask for so much, so often.

      Fleece bedding is a great option. You just have to wash it and shake the poo into the trash. It is extremely easy to litter train them. But just know they will also go elsewhere ever now and then. Having a litter box underneath their wheel is perfect because they poo mostly when they are running. Wheel wise I recommend the California bucket wheel.

    They're like toys. They look regular when they're being observed, but when you get away from them, they come alive, turn blue, and run at the speed of sound.

      lainey marie you keep commenting this stuff and I have to say you are an idiot. You are obviously projecting your own human fears onto the animal. These are not humans. In fact you will find in the wild that they burrow and sleep in shallow spaces. They prefer a small cozy hideout. Plus the guy obviously takes his hedgehogs out to play everyday. This space is merely his sleeping quarters.
