Got my first chickens (four of them) two months ago. It's been very hot but now that it's a bit cooler, one of my lovely ladies is mouth breathing. Yes, she eats snails. Yes, there's a wood mulch pile in the yard, but not very near the coop and pen. No, she doesn't seem to have mites. Unfortunately, I just called the only vet for miles and she's not taking any new patients. Hoping my chook is just hot, but, my goodness, this video was so informative, it really helps me know more of what to look for. Thanks so much. Fingers crossed for Xray, my lovely barred rock.
@@SeztheVet The barred rock was fine. Unfortunately when she started molting, the oddball, aptly named Mania, bullied the other two terribly until she injured one and that one died. Now we're down to two chickens and looking forward to getting two new young ones this week to become a flock again.
Interesting video, I have chickens and a few years back we had a 42 degree day (I live in Australia) and one of my chickens got serious heat stress. Thankfully we saved her but her friend wasnt so lucky and died sitting on the nest.
Try giving them a wading pool or bird bath in a shady place to soak their feet and offload the heat. They'll practically live in it, especially if you serve some chilled watermelon nearby.
Thank you for your practical knowledge really helpful for many farmers. One thing we must know that never maintain the temperature at the cost of ventilation. High temperature cause panting. You have good knowledge and thanx for your information
We have had very hot summer days, 100+. We got an old bottom from a plastic 3'×3' rabbit cage about 3 inches deep. We fill it on hot days with cool, clean water. The chicken ladies literally flock to it to soak thier feet and wet their beaks and feathers. It cost nothing but is a real life saver. Haven't lost 1 to heat in 3 years.
My one campine chicken does so. We bought her when she was 2 months old. Now she is a newly egg laying hen. From then to now she does this. Always mouth open and takes breathe with open mouth. She is fully fine Alhamdulillah. Worried about the matter
maam my chicken is 6month old and breaths heavy through mouth while eating and the food chocks sometimes when he eats. I have three pet chicken of same age but this is much smaller is size to his brothers and as he grew his one leg stopped working he preferred sitting earlier later was completely unable to walk his beak is twisted but he's a lovely boy always trying to stand. i consulted online vet a month ago he prescribed a powder for respiratory disease for poultry after which he is able to stand now but when tries to walk stumble backwards.
I hope someone can help me! I have a 4 year old brown leghorn hen. Intermittent mouth breathing and if roosting on something that I think is pushing up on what in humans would be her diaphragm her comb turns a little dark. Otherwise totally normal acting. Vet said on X-ray that she had “crap in her lungs” and she would need to work it out on her own and for me to go ahead and treat form gapeworms although she did not think that was the issue. It is now over 6 weeks later and I have put numerous antibiotics, probiotics, ACV, in her water, but she still does the open mouth breathing every now and then and I saw her sitting on a 2x4 with a slightly darkened comb the other day. She didn’t stay there long, got down and pinked up rapidly. I have more meds and a nebulizer. Any ideas? Love my chicks and don’t want to lose her or have her suffer. At the moment I don’t think she is suffering. Thanks!!
I have baby chicks and one is separated from all of them, that chick while sleeping is gasping for air pause for a second and keeps going. They are 2 weeks can someone help
Can you do a video on what to do for a broken leg in chicks? From splinting options to maybe physical therapy so baby doesn’t become a pegleg. And if there’s anything I have at home for pain relief.
Please help my chicken. I'm watching your video. My lovely girl is a backyard hen here in Melbourne Australia where it's mostly cold. She's roughly 3 yrs old & has been constantly mouth breathing (mostly wide mouthed) for at least 3 months. She periodically shakes her head while making a hard to describe almost high pitched cough/ cluck in between mouth breathing. She at times has a sound of soft wheezing while breathing. Sometimes she'll close her eyes for moments like she's sleepy or lay down but all my chooks do this. Apart from this she's a happy active hen. Today we tried picking her up, she got scared & kept trying to escape. After a few minutes of holding her we put her down & she just fell to the ground limp, she went completely purple as if she was dying from suffocation, shaking with movement once or twice. I put her in the room & got everyone away from her, she went through this for 10 minutes or more until her colour came back to normal then some time after she got up & stood in the corner until she got better. She drank water & carried on seemingly normal afterwards. This was so awful to witness, I'm really regretful that we handled her and I can't take her to the vet bcos I'm worried it'll happen again. She appeared to be dying. Please tell me what she could have and what to do if I CAN'T handle her due to her going into this shock & suffocation mode. I heard if there's a large amount of worms & you give a high dose of tablets that the worms can die all at once causing them to block breathing passages. My other 5 hens & rooster are fine but most are younger.
Yes you're right, that can happen. With a heavy burden of adults so etudes the obstruction needs to be removed. However there are other causes of obstruction as well, and many causes of lower respiratory disease. With any cause of respiratory disease handling can push them over the edge, as can heat stress. Basically any thing that's makes their heart beat a bit faster can push them over the edge of they're already struggling. Sorry I can't give any more info without knowing the cause
ooo if it's bad enough gapeworm that it looks like pneumonia, then the GW burden would be very heavy. Hope he's calm, breathing okay, and getting treatment!
Just brought a chicken home today and I'm thinking gapeworm too. Never seen it before but she is like.. gasping to breath. But if she sits for a while she can calm down snd breath fine/act fine it seems. But has to breath hard it is a SERIOUS gasp
I lost a chicken to blocked airway/choking...is there a way to perform the heilmich on them? If I have gone this far, the RN/EMT in me wants to know about CPR? mostly compressions. Thank you.
I got three young hens off of craigslist to integrate with my flock.......bad idea, they all have some sort of head cold so quarantined they go. Lot of coughing and nasal discharge, but great appetite and drinking well and reasonably active with nice pink / red combs, but a little lower energy than I would expect and oddly they don't seem to scratch. Also were beat up by a mean roo in their last home. Two look spunky, one I'm not so sure about. Fingers crossed.
These respiratory issues tend to be chronic once they entered the flock and they will be reactivated from time to time. When that happens give them water infused with thyme or oregano.
How would you go about eradicating gape worm completely from your soil and chicken run? My chickens have every symptom of gape worm, I’ve found with use of de worming they get better for a few weeks but always seem to get it again!
Sorry to say, these nasty critters are not able to be eradicated unless the chooks are raised indoors in a controlled environment, and even then... Gapeworm lives inside earthworms, grasshopers and other creepy-crawleys, in the environment, so you cannot get rid of them altogether, meaning when you deworm they are not protected from future burdens. Of course repeated de-worming is terrible for resistance developing (meaning the products might not work well in the in future). You may even already have resistant worms on your land, contributing to the issue. What I would recommend is having your vet run some poo samples next time you have an affected bird, to make sure that this is in fact the issue (in case you're actually dealing with something else that is coincidentally coming and going). Once confirmed, then deworm, and test poo samples again 7 days after, to make sure they have all been killed (in case the drug is not working well). Assuming Gapeworm is your issue and the drug is working, then going forward, make sure you alternate which drug you are using- switch between ivermectin, levamisole (eg Aviverm), and fenbendazole (eg Pancure). This will slow down the development of resistant worms. Good luck!!
@@joshportie I dunno I tried Diatomaceous earth for lice and everyone says it works but I went back next day and they had even more than before I used it. I went to tractor supply and got permethrin and sprayed them down once and I don't see the first 1 today but I'll retreat in ten days to make sure I didn't miss any eggs.
i have a 2 year old hen, i noticed that she started breathing with her mouth open when she lays down. She continues to eat and drink normally, she doesn't seem to have any kind of secretion. What could it be? Where I live there are no veterinarians who serve birds
hi steph, sorry to hear there's no bird vets around you :( if it's when she's lying down, my guess would be she had dl Luis in the abdomen which compresses her respirator organs when she lies. I go over these causes in the last section of the video. unfortunately the causes are varied :( have a feel around the back end below the vent. if rounded and firm this is the case. I couldn't give specific info without seeing her, I'm sorry :(
Hi doctor my chick got hurt by a cat on her neck and i think its neck got broken so i used some bandage to support her neck so it is not able to breathe and even on the day of accident the blood came out from its mouth and it is facing definitely to breathe even her tongue is coming out it is not able to take food not about to drink water and the next day it feels like better and it even opened her eyes and drinking water to but at night it is facing deficulty to breath Can u please tell me is there any cure 🥺
Thank you for this video. We lost a hen last week after she had been sneezing. We picked her to try and give treatment and she immediately threw up clear fluids and aspirated as we picked her up. She died nearly instantly. It was so traumatic and awful, we had no idea this could happen. Now a week later I have a hen with low energy and not very interested in eating. I made a mash with vitamins and she went for it like crazy, but between eating she's stretching her neck up and gasping. Looks as if she's choking or just can't breath right. It stops after a minute or two and she continues to eat. But this keeps happening when I try to get her to eat. Any ideas, please? I'm afraid to pick her up after what happened to my last hen, and we do not have an avian vet anywhere near us.
Oh no im so sorry to hear that :( something that severe and hitting multiple sounds likely infectious, be that viral, bacterial or fungal. Even if taken to a non avian vet they should be able to cover her with antibiotics to give her a chance at recovery, if nothing else. You can get antibiotics that go in the water if the vet us able to give them and feels its appropriate. Thats not to say its a problem with the respiratory tract, as can struggle to breath with other issues as well, as shown in the video. make sure they're covered for gapeworm for sure. Again, you can get deworming drug that goes in the water for this. Electrolytes in the water can help support them during these times. Keep her warm and stress free as possible. As youve pointed out, once severe, handling can push them over the edge, so its a tricky balance and certainly want to get there sooner rather than later. As to the specific cause I couldn't hazard a guess without seeing her but hopefully someone closer by can help.
@@SeztheVet which dewormer can go in the water? We plan to deworm them today, and if no improvement, we will try an antibiotic. Does that sound like a wise course of action, or would you recommend the antibiotic first or even at the same time?
You can get levamisol to put in the water. The brand here is called aviverm. Or flubenol goes in the food. I couldn't say without seeing her sorry, she may be very sick and need something more urgently, I just couldn't know. But there's no issue with giving antibiotics at the same time, if that's what you mean
@@SeztheVet thank you so much for your reply. She seems to be getting a little worse. Changed our plans. We've ordered denagard antibiotics that will arrive tomorrow. Really hoping it will help!
I have a 10 week old hen who has been intermittently open mouth breathing for a few days. She has a very quiet wheeze that I can only hear if I’m right up next to her. Her voice also seems a little raspy, but I kind of remember it always being that way. She is black, so I’ve been chalking it up to mild heat stress as summer comes in, but am getting a bit worried that it may be a respiratory infection. I have noticed my other chooks have been doing some open mouth breathing occasionally throughout the day as well. I have heard a sneeze here and there when they’re in their coop but can’t tell who it’s coming from. They all act normal otherwise, eating and drinking fine, running around the yard, no eye problems, gaping, or head shaking. Is it just heat stress, or am I right to be worried about respiratory infection?
@@Madi-qe9cj Hi Madison. A wheezing sound, the sound that is made when air is pushed through a thin tube, tells us that it's coming from the upper respiratory tract. but not necessarily obstructed by something, In fact with multiple affected this would be unlikely. but inflammation of the lining of the upper respiratory tract causes obstruction as well, when the wall thickens, if that makes sense. I would assume in your case you're looking at a viral cause that has moved through the flock. here in New Zealand we have a couple of viruses that do this, but we only have the mild strains so they generally pass on their own, only occasionally needing to be covered with antibiotics. would be best to chat with a vet in your area to know what's endemic there. If I saw your chook I would also listen to the respiratory tract to confirm where the sound was coming from. without seeing them of course it's a bit of a guess, but if multiple affected then infectious causes are very possible. the sound could be incidental and they are infact experiencing heat stress as well. sorry it's hard to say from over here without a exam to look for fever, other symptoms etc. good luck hope you have a vet in the area!
Hiii i beg you to help me asap plz.. Today my two chicken ate fertilizer one died with symptoms of shortness of breathing(Mouth breathing) and weakness intially i though he suffered heart attack that's why i give CPR to her. And then i put some water to her mouth when she open for breathing but her condition worsen and unfortunately she died. Almost 5 hours later of this incident and my second chicken showing same symptom ( SOB , weakness ) what should i do now. I want to save her but no doctor facilities are available in my area... Please advise me what to do and what not to do now... I'll forever remain grateful for ur help... Please help me to save this precious life
Hi, I'm sorry to hear this. There are a number of different chemicals that could be causing the problem depending on the fertilizer. But at the end of the day symptomatic and supportive care (eg IV fluids to flush the liver and kidneys and supplemental oxygen) would be a must. If she is already struggling to breath that is a very bad sign and I would recommend euthenasing her :(

@@SeztheVet You are very knowledgeable person. You replied to me and it shows that you always intend to help others. I'm very thankful to you and also going to subscribe ur channel for all your upcoming videos.. 💚
I've had issues with my chickens lately, you and the merck manual are the only sources I've found that makes sense. Even my own vet got some information wrong. He labeled cecal worms as "lungworm". Have a weezie/raspy chicken with squeaky voice. Cant tolerate high Temps because of breathing/lung difficulties. Shes had this for over a month.Abdomen not large, no ascites, laying daily, appetite steady, clear nasal discharge. 6 other birds unaffected. Fecal float showed tapeworm. I'm worried about deworming then treating for Gape. I don't have a vet that's reliable. Will fecal show Gape worm eggs. How does one test for that fungus? What is best medicine for Gape or the fungus you mentioned.. could this be mycoplasma? Thank you for the quality content.
A fecal float should show gapeworm eggs. Ive been surprised how many times I found just 1 syngamus trachea egg on the slide. It looks similar to capillaria eggs, but capillaria look like a casserole dish filled with confetti or noodles, whereas syngamus looks more like a casserole dish with some overlapping potato pancakes or individual larger shapes that don't "fill the dish". Sounds funny but it always worked for me.
I've never had poultry with gapeworm but wild birds I treated with obvious signs would get so mucousy that they'd struggle to cough. Sometimes you could hear the "plug" come out of their trachea. They'd get some relief but the phlegm would build up moments later and make breathing difficult again. More coughing. I used fenbendazole or mebendazole oral dose to treat gapeworm/Syngamus. 2 treatments i think 5 days apart. It's been a while, don't recall doses, but the info is out there if you look. Ivermectin prophylactically to clean bird of other parasites. As for fungus, Aspergillus, you can order test kits to culture it. Antifungals, fluconazole, some 2 drug protocols had good results according to Harrison's Avian Principles, but it can be very difficult to cure. Awful to watch bird gasping for so long while your vet is throwing everything at it to no avail. Awful gradual panicking death. Have PTSD from those moments. I have a sick hen today for the first time in 20 yrs. Trying to figure out what to treat her for myself. I need to see videos of chickens with gapeworm and if they cough frequently like songbirds and raptors I helped. I was starting to think I'd dose her with fenbendazole but her nares exude some clear, thick mucous, which i read is uncommon with syngamus. Who knows? To be proactive, I'm going to do it anyway. Sometimes I'd backlight the throat w flashlight and see the red "Y" gapeworms clinging to back of trachea while looking thru glottis as bird gasped for next breath. Awful little monsters.
Mycoplasma....yep, another possibility of respiratory distress. Tylan/tylosin is used for that one. One day maybe there will be a home test kit to check for a few of these common ailments that torture our beloved creatures. It's long overdue. My animals are all rescues, which is costly care when well. I can't afford a vet for sneezing and snot, which is awful because birds can go down so quickly!
Hi Jenny, I appreciate your frustrations. Good on you for looking into it- - Yes you can see gapeworm eggs in the faeces. If theres a heavy burden of adults you can also sometimes shine a flashlight through the neck in a dark room and see them or see them right at the top of the trachea if you look down the back of the throat. - When treating you'll need Aviverm or Flubenol, if here in NZ. Ivermectin products (like the spot ons), in addition to being questionable in terms of absorption and rising resistance, don't kill the adult gapeworms. Aviverm (levamisole) or flubenol at a double dose is the way to go. Flubenol is a newer drug and I tend to reach for if in doubt. - Do you mean Aspergillosis? Thats a nasty one to test for and treat, i'm afraid. Really the worst case scenario. But I do see it forming granulomas in the upper respiratory tract, so always a possibility. Generally diagnosis is by either looking inside the airsacs with an endoscope. Otherwise sedating and taking a wash sample of the lower trachea, and trying to grow it in the lab. I can't imagine either of these will be options for you without finding a vet confident with birds, and possibly even a specialist. Swabbing for it can come back negative even when its down there, which is frustrating. Treatment is a very very long course of antifungals (months), but if there are plaques they sometimes need removal. It's a very guarded prognosis for aspergillosis, even with treatment. - yes, could my Mycoplasma
Actually I saw my little chick started open mouth breathing and sometimes trying to throw something up, I looked inside its mouth and surprisingly I see no tongue inside its mouth, what should I do? It'll be so nice if you tell me what to do, thank you
Hello doc, rn our chicken is suffering and I don't know what to do and I can't take it to the vet cause my mum doesn't want to spend money😢 our chicken is gasping for air but he's not making any hissing sound. He also have runny eyes and the other eye seems like it's blind like blueish cloudy😢 he has like saliva on his mouth and he's pooping a lot.. I don't want him to die but I don't know what to do also😢
I'm sorry to hear that :( I hope you managed to find help or put him out of his suffering. respiratory disease can be severe and nasty, and when due to an infection is not easily treated at home. Unfortunately I can't help for individuals from afar.
started with common cold type symptoms. sneezing etc. Now she is visibly breathing and shutting her eyes. Not sure how to proceed. Its been going on a while and the other birds are not getting sick.
It was also happening to my chick so I have it antibiotic dipped in water so take a antibiotic pill and take a very small bowl and add water and antibiotic in to it and make the chick drink it... And also give the chick some vitiamin d pill dissolved in water... And they will be fine in a day or so and also remember that the infection can also get to other chicks so also feed them this medicine a bit just in case hope it helps byee

Is it somthing I need to worry about?
Could just be heat, or could be the early stages of something. I couldn't say, without examining her, I'm sorry. The video walks you through how to rule some things in and out
Hi. My chicken had swollen neck and feeling difficulty in breathig, she frequently shakes the head and there is whooping sounds when she breath. Whenever i give water the breathing problem lowers. Temerature in our region is 34 degree celsius. Plz guide me it is viral or bectrial disesase?? There is no veternery doctor nearby.. how can i diagnose the actual cause?
It sounds like she may have a tightening in the back of the throat or in the windpipe but I couldn't say what is causing the obstruction. It could be gape worm, foreign body like seed or pellet, plaques like aspergillosis fungus, or pox virus lesions. I would work it out using equipment to look inside. Otherwise some one near you might be able to just try a course of something and see how it goes. Sorry I can't help from afar :(
My chicken is almost 6 months and yesterday I noticed he was coughing and make some sounds with his beak open.So I separated him from the other chickens and put him in a box with light open for heating because nowadays the weather is so cold. But I still don't think he is improving even I gave him garlic water too.He isn't eating anything so what should I do can I save him please I have a close attachment with him he was a little chick when I saw him for the first time,.Help please
Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear this :( An animal in respiratory distress, especially if not eating, could be so from so many different reasons- very commonly just end stage illness. I couldn't begin to guess what's wrong without seeing him. You can check out the video on "at home first aid" for poultry, but if not improving and no possibility of getting him to a vet, then a humane euthanasia is probably the kindest option.
Hello !! I have a chicken who keeps mouth breathing, has lost weight is really weak and pale comb and wattles. She's been separated from the others for 2 days and is improving in terms of looking a bit better and occasionaly standing up and preening in her crate but is still mouth breathing and very wobbly at walking. I'm not sure what's wrong could it be gapeworm ??
oh no she sounds in a very bad way :( it won't be Gapeworm. if she is very pale, wobbly and weak, she will either be in shock from severe end-stage disease, or severely anemic. Regardless she will be beyond help at this stage I believe :( she will be suffering a great deal and would need some serious medical attention to come right, if treatable. do you deal with red mites? when was she last treated with something for external parasotes?
if you haven't already, watch the video in critical care at home for the sick chook. really important for her to get hydrated and stay really warm right now.
Chickens will hide pain and suffering until they are very very sick and often in need of critical care. If he has stopped eating it means he is already very sick. He needs the underlying cause treated and likely supportive care to pull through. If you can't identify the underlying cause then a euthanasia may be the only kind option. In my experience oce they stop eating they are already suffering the greatly, thats why they stopped eating. I couldn't guess without seeing him, what the cause is :(
Please advise me on what to do with my chicken: I believe due to winds and her coop not being fully wind proof she got a cold. And she is mouth- breathing, not eating and when we tried to feed her rice she couldn't swallow it and there was I think a white lump in her throat. What do I do?
a white lump in her throat? can you see it down the back when you open her mouth? Obviously couldn't say without seeing her and examining properly, but if shes stopped eating altogether she will be in a very bad way and at the least probably needs to be covered with drugs and supportive care. A white lump in the throat may be whats obstructing her breathing and this isnt a standard chicken cold if thats the case. Some things that look like this could be wet pox viurs or necrobacillosis...
What about when they are panting because they are hot even though they have shelter, is that respiratory acidosis? How do we help with that besides electrolytes?
Hi Carla, respiratory acidosis refers to changes in the blood stream when an animal is struggling to breath for a prolonged period of time. Is this what you mean? To treat heat stress they really need to cool down. Shade + wind + cold water is the way to go. Unfortunately sometimes things get confused if they have another respiratory disease going on, as they may struggle to compensate in the heat, so it can be confused with heat stress.
Hello, as informative your video is, it is also that much confusing. Simply because I watched a different video regarding open mouth breathing and they stated it was due to respiratory diseases - Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (MG); Infectious Bronchitis (IB); Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT) or Avian Influenza (AV). I believe my bird has Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT) because they stated that it will cough up blood and that is what mine done. The non bird expert veterinarian put her into an oxygen box which it benefited a little and gave me some antibiotics - Enrofloxacin Oral Suspension 25mg. They also told me that most likely wont make it and even if it did, it may have to be on antibiotics for life. Its currently alive but breathing heavily from the mouth with blocked nose type breathing. My concern is that another one of my silkies could also be infected. Do you think my bird has Infectious Laryngotracheitis or gapeworm? Can the chickens be vaccinated against these respiratory diseases? Thankyou
I have a problem with my chicken. She has breathing problems so I took her to the vet yesterday. My vet told me she has an infection in her air sac and then gave me medicine to give her and that I should inject the medicine into the hole in the middle of her mouth (not with a needle) Well, I decided to just google a bit on how to do it since I felt I was doing it wrong, but now I found out that the hole in the middle is a chickens glottis which goes to the lungs (I think) so it feels wrong to have to inject it there, since it's a liquid and won't she drown then? I'm really confused on what to do and I really want her to get better, please help. I'm also very confused with what he said. First he asked me what they drink out of ( so I can put the medicine in the water) but then he told me to inject it with this syringe thing, because I said I can't guarantee that my chicken will drink the water. But then when he showed me how to inject it, he said to inject it in the hole in the middle like I said above. Then later that day I wanted to give the second dose of the medicine and my chickens face was a bit blue. But since it's a air sac infection, should it be injected there? I don't want to do something wrong. He also gave me the option to just inject it with a needle under her wing, but I don't know if I'll be able to get that right. Also she is swollen behind, like you said at the end of the video.
No please don't inject it there! This goes into the lungs and will drown her! If he face is turning blue, she is already struggling for oxygen, maybe because the first dose went there! If giving it into the mouth, the safety thing to do is to give a little at the front of the beak and allow her to swallow. Just a little at a time. If she inhales it it could kill her. Air she is swollen around the back end this may be the cause of her struggling to breathe, but I couldn't comment on what the vet found on physical exam
@@SeztheVet she has been heavily breathing for weeks now and then we took her to the vet ( my parents didn't want to and also we couldn't find an avian vet, but luckily we did now ). He didn't do much of a physical exam, all he did was look at her and said it's and infection. But thank you, I will give the medicine the way you told me to. Luckily I was kind of bad at injecting the medicine in the hole so I don't think a lot of what I gave her went in there. I'm really hoping she gets better.
@@SeztheVet oh and do you maybe know of a way for me to help get the fluid out of her lungs? I'm really scared now because what if something bad happens now because of it :(
@@SeztheVet Yes, unfortunately my chicken passed away. She fought strong for a while and then one day passed. I have went through this with water belly in my Baby [chicken] ans drained her with a needle Shes also had water crop twice not sour crop is there a medicine i can give her for water crop Dr ? PS I love all your videos thank you
Hi Terry. So she had a fluid filled crop without the fetid smelling yeast infection? This would indicate either vomiting, or crop stasis, ie not emptying. there is no single cause for it unfortunately, just like with vomiting in humans, there are many things that can cause this, as well as crop stasis. Crops stasis could be from many things :( very sorry I can't give anything specific.

Hii. I have a chicken. She has droopy tail for more than a week. She is wobbly and just sits on the floor all the time. When I try to make her walk she walks a little then keeps standing. She gives egg which means she is not egg bound. She is not active. No signs of lice or mites. Comb is normal. I don't understand what's wrong with her. She eats specific foods like egg, tomatoes. Thanks for your questions. Sorry, I can't inform of a first aid cure, as there are many different causes of respiratory disease, all with different treatments. Ranging from parasites, to infectious (bacteria, viral, fungal), simply irritation from high ammonia fumes or even heat stress. Hope you can find someone in person to have a look and get a diagnosis for you!
I have 5 chickens and most of them open their mouth currently during the day because it’s above 90F but I notice my 2 bigger girls stretch out their neck and open their mouth on and off at night, I believe they’ve done that always. Would this be normal ?
Hello pls help my chicken I have 2 I of them can't stand up constantly mouth breathing could it be gape worm? My other chicken is constantly mouth breathing (WIDE) she isn't able to walk properly, her wings are loose around her quivering a lot ( ALL OF THESE SIPTOMS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING SINCE TODAY LIKE BY AROUND EVENING) THERES NO VET AVAILABLE RIGHT BOW BUT I THINK THERE WILL BE BY TOMMOROW) I HAVE ALSO SEPARATED THE BOTH CHICKENS WILL THEY BE ALRIGHT TILL TOMMOROW PLS LET ME KNOW URGENT
Hi. Would levimasole be appropriate to treat gapeworm? My hen shows possible signs (yawning several times everyday, scratching her nose a lot, which started happening a few weeks after I put her outside in a place where she had never been before) and the lab found "strongyle eggs" in her feces, however they didn't specify which ones, and as far as I know it could be intestinal strongyles but it could also be gapeworms (syngamus) since they are from the strongyle family. My vet gave me a dewormer containing levamisole (it's called Teniverm, I'm in France so I don't have access to the same drugs as elsewhere) as he says it will kill any strongyles even gapeworms, but these types of worms are not among those mentioned on the product, and online info is conflicting. Some say levamisole doesn't work for gapeworms, some say it does... Also, I should specify that I saw very small worms (line miniature ascaris) in my hen's poop a month ago, they were alive and moving in the poop, which is why I had the fecal test done. Would they be the strongyles? Because looking it up I couldn't find a lot of info as it seems chickens are normally not a host, most articles mention farm animals like sheep or cows...
Hii mam I have a white broiler chicken he is one year 2 months old daily morning he used to alarm but since one month he is not :( her doesn't eat or drink anything alwaya he will go and stand in a corner and close his eyes and seems he sleep now from past one week he is sneezing and he is not active also when we observed in his throat we could see some white pimple like things and now he started vomiting please guide me how to save him from this he is very attached to us and his comb is very big and sometimes the colour of it goes light also please help mam
Oh dear, he sounds very very sick :( I'm not sure where you live, but every country has its own set of diseases more likely in the area. You would need to have him checked over by a vet in your area. It sounds like he needs help very urgently and is suffering greatly.
Thank u so much mam we consulted the vet he gave one injection and he gave some powder to feed him with water and one syrup ( Immunol) ......... He said some infection has happend for him .......:( Can u suggest me any immunity booster mam other than the prescription given by our vet .........

Hi Eugene, it sounds like she has a respiraotry infection. She will need antibiotics and antiinflammatories to help her breath, urgently. If she is struggling to breathe and you cannot get drugs from a vet you are best to euthanise to prevent further unecessary suffering :( Very sorry to hear
What about Marek's disease? I think this virus can also cause masses in the abdomen as well as ascites which creates the symptom of labored breathing...
Yes, Mareks disease can (we coud argue MD could cause just about any symptom, it's so varied). Re masses in the abdomen, it woudl be unusual to see a mass getting large enough to cause open mouth breathing from taking up too much space. We tend to see them wasting away with the cancer instead. The number 1 most common organ affected with MD (in the adult, visceral form) is the liver, and liver failure can cause fluid in the abdomen. So I left that covered in the video under "ascites from liver failure". Severe starvation/deathly low protein can also lead to ascites, so possible to have this secondary to MD, however in my experience they are usually gone before reaching this point. The other way Mareks CAN cause gasping is by causing lymphoma of the vagus nerve, which controls the crop and the lungs, so both stop working properly. To be fair, I dont believe I've ever seen this in clinical practice (at least knowingly- I could be wrong), so isn't common.
@@SeztheVet Thank you for the great and informative response. I believe I have such a chicken - with mild MD. Her vet believes she has the disease, and since her diagnosis I've noticed other symptoms that appear to support MD. This bird has chronic intermittent labored breathing and intermittent green diarrhea (both which appear to improve with the consumption of raw garlic?). She's also got some nerve damage to her feet, and is showing signs of suppressed immunity - secondary infections. And she had an acute case of ascites about 2 years ago. And also, she is overweight...she is a meat chicken (now a pet) and she's lost weight since having her little bout with ascites - I guessed right at the time and began restricting her calories...she's still too heavy but she's not nearly as fat as she was. lol Would lymphoma of the vagus nerve cause a chickens' crop to intermittently overflow? This bird's crop will also occasionally overflow - water usually.
hello, my rooster has began to continuously gape numerous times a day followed by shaking his head after each gape. he has also become more lethargic as he spends more time sleeping. we put him and the hens on flubenvet for 7 days, but he still does it. some of the hens are now beginning to do the same even if they were on flubenvet so whatever he has could be contagious. they don't have runny nose or cough. I have no idea what he has and vets around me don't specialise in chickens. what could they possibly have and what is the cure? thank you very much and have a lovely day
firstly I would say just to make sure they are actually getting the flubenol. it makes the water taste funny so they may not drink it. if they're not, then give in some cat meat, or straight down the beak with some water to Dilute it down. other causes include viral, bacterial, pox inside the mouth, and more. the episode gives a run down of causes. .
@@SeztheVet It was labored breathing (loud wheezing in and out and coughing). Got some VetRx, dropped a couple of drops on her beak, kept her separated and put the humidifier with some VetRx drops for a couple of hours); then dropped some on her perch, to soak into her feet. By the morning, she was good as new, reintroduced her to the flock without any spread of symptoms.
Living in central Florida we see high high temps. I have 4 week old chicks that I just took outside for their first walk about in the grass (in a safe metal crate, with me in nice heavy shade.) 2 chicks are mouth breathing. They have their water and are seemingly happy as can be - scratching and pecking around. It's 88 degrees fahrenheit right now. When we get their permanent run set up out here should I keep them in deep shade always (because of heat??) I figure they need sun too it just seems like it's almost too hot for anything outside shade.
Hello mam, our hens are dying at night they make some different type of sound and the Saliva is also coming out of their mouth frequently what must be the reason and solution
Hi priyanka, I'm sorry i wouldn't begin to guess without seeing and examining them. Saliva from the mouth could be vomit or regurgitation. There are so many things that could cause this. Would recommend dropping one in to your local vet clinic for a post-mortem exam if you can
@@CoyoteCrossingSanctuary I was doing research to help my Mother-in-law who had cancer. The book of Revelation says in New Jerusalem, the trees will be for the healing of the nations. I started looking at the trees growing on the property I live on. You can boil all parts of all oak trees to make a tea, except for the acorns. The tea can be added to the chickens water. I drink this tea hot or cold and sweetened. My cats and dogs also drink oak in their water. You can not over dose on oak tea. I did notice I the past few weeks, if someone has the comes around you who has a fever, the oak tea may not stop you from getting sick, however it shortened the sickness to less than 24 hours. I have given oak tea to my husband's coworkers who have stated they thought they were getting sick, the tea helped them to get better faster.
@@yahsomeacres7816 Ok very interesting- so should I look at the trees in my property or do you feel it’s oak and I can get oak tea? I actually study natural medicine.
@@CoyoteCrossingSanctuary I would look at T trees in your area. Pine has all the same benefits as oak except oak is also an antidote. I have used oak for an antidote a few times. A year ago while researching the trees, I bought Willow Eucalyptus and made a tea. I have learned to listen to all the warnings about plants. When I made tea from the Eucalyptus I had ignored the part which said to dry the leaves first. Eucalyptus is posing to Humans if not dried first. I gavey husband some of the tea made from fresh leaves, he may have had between 8 and 16oz's. I on the other hand drank 32oz's of the tea. The next morning I was running a fever and throwing up and unable to keep anything down. I had no idea I had poisoned myself. I decided to drink se sweet ice cold oak tea I had in an ice chest, this was only about 8oz's. I ended up peeing every 5 minutes for I think hours. The next day I was fine. My husband did not get sick like I did, when I realized 2 days later what happened, a friend gave my husband charcoal pills. I have used oak on food poisoning without knowing until after. Drinking oak has made me throw up toxins, sweat them out and pee them out. I did give a guy oak tincture to wash a posing ivy rash which healed the rash. Not sure how long it took, it was a few weeks before I saw him again, all he said was thanks it worked. I do have a Facebook group where I have placed research links of a few trees. I will link the group here.
I wouldn't recommend from cutting in to it as there are causes of respiratory disease that can affect humans as well. It depends on the cause though to be honest
Depends what it is Tony, its a massive topic. Sorry there's no easy answer there . In general, prevent respiratory disease, keep the enviroenment well ventilated, stress free, well feed and otherwise good health, quarintine new animals etc etc.
Doctor my hen is well now but 🤧 he is having white spot on his tongue 🥺🥺 and the vet over here is not good doctor please help me I can't live without him 🥺😭😭 please I request you please
I can't help on a specific case without seeing her, I'm so sorry :( Keep her as stressfree as possible and try to get her to an avian vet. Check out the video for possible causes. GOod luck!
Yes I was recently made aware that the early videos are much quieter than everything else on youtube. I'll be changing that for the next ones that go up. Respectfully disagree regarding the airsacs. Even severe airsacculitis can sound normal, but not always. You can sometimes appreciate a harsh respiratory sound with listening along the lateral body wall. But yes, very very difficult, and sometimes wonder if I'm convincing myself haha
hmmm ... some vids I speak fast on request. This isn't one of them. Sorry you struggle with the accident. UA-cam has a solution for you- hit the "settings" cog in the bottom right of the screen and select "playback speed". Super easy. If you don't want to do that I recommend not watching any of the other videos. (Subtitles also exist, but this is an older vid so with have automatic subtitles created by YT, which are notoriously innacurate).

This is stupid. Why wouldn’t you just tell people how to fix this at home. It’s a chicken, vets are hundreds of dollars which cancels out the “raising chickens cost less” outlook. Pathetic greed lady.
I have explained how to fix the things at home that you can fix at home (eg gapeworm, heat stress, nutritional deficiencies). In fact I start with them to save people having to watch the whole thing if they don't want to. I even have a video which I link to on how to provide critical care at home for the sick chook. My point of highlighting the more severe, and untreatable without veterinary medication (or an oxygen cage) causes, is to give people a realistic expectation if trying to treat at home. There are far too many hens left to suffocate to death, which is unacceptable for welfare. It makes no difference to me if people choose to invest in treatment, or chose to humanely euthanise- the problem is when owners aren't quite sure on when something needs the vet or not- ie is there a chance it will survive at home or not. This channel is entirely about improving welfare. You seem very angry and distrusting of vets, I would suggest not following or watching any other episodes if my approach bothers you.
So glad you found it helpful! Hope your girls are still ticking along happilly :)
Welllll. 1:30 in and I already screwed up. I used a dropper to give her VetRX. :(
My one campine chicken does so. We bought her when she was 2 months old. Now she is a newly egg laying hen. From then to now she does this. Always mouth open and takes breathe with open mouth. She is fully fine Alhamdulillah.
Worried about the matter
Mmm id be concerned too. Not sure without seeing her, it could be anything. Good luck!

The vets around me know nothing about chickens she sometimes does open mouth breathing is it still serious?
What if you don’t have a vet?
i can’t even tell if my rooster has gapeworms or pneumonia but i think he has gapeworms
ooo if it's bad enough gapeworm that it looks like pneumonia, then the GW burden would be very heavy.
I have 2 months chicken they have breathing problem please recommend me a treatment.
I lost a chicken to blocked airway/choking...is there a way to perform the heilmich on them? If I have gone this far, the RN/EMT in me wants to know about CPR? mostly compressions. Thank you.
No there's not, unfortunately. Bird lungs are not inflatable, but are stationary and air flows through them. :(
I got three young hens off of craigslist to integrate with my flock.......bad idea, they all have some sort of head cold so quarantined they go.
Thank you for the education 👍🏻
I don't know what to do because I don't have a vet and I have ben giving her vet RX
Good luck!!
Diatomaceous earth.

Can u please tell me is there any cure 🥺

Is it just heat stress, or am I right to be worried about respiratory infection?
what country do you live in Madison? if won't be heat stress if there is a wheeze. that tells us so.ething is obstructing the upper airway
@@SeztheVet I live in the US, the state of Michigan to be exact. So the slightest breathing sound means she has an obstruction?

Good luck
Hi Jenny, I appreciate your frustrations. Good on you for looking into it-
- Yes you can see gapeworm eggs in the faeces.
Why does everyone assume the sick chicken is a hen? If i had tons of money then i would just call the vet and wouldnt need to look on the web.
I've got a cochin pullet and have like 5 together in brooder and only 1 has its mouth gaped open a little but don't show any signs of respiratory or anything and acts normal just wondered if maybe she's getting hot in the brooder under the heat lamp... plz help!
I'm also having trouble finding any avian vets around me !!
oh no she sounds in a very bad way :( it won't be Gapeworm. if she is very pale, wobbly and weak, she will either be in shock from severe end-stage disease, or severely anemic.
What about aspergillosis?
Please help me..
My chicken doesn't eat ..he drinks milk only..he is getting weak ..he is 1.5 year old..
What to do mam?? 😞
I couldn't guess without seeing him, what the cause is :(
Please advise me on what to do with my chicken:
I believe due to winds and her coop not being fully wind proof she got a cold.
Some things that look like this could be wet pox viurs or necrobacillosis...
hello dear i have a issue my 15vyear old hen has a problem in throat.i use antibiotics but it cant help.
I'm sorry i can't help from afar. It could be a very many things. Hope you can find help!
Interesting video.
glad you thought so :)
I'm really scared now because what if something bad happens now because of it :(
Sorry Shani, I missed this comment! I assume things have gone one way or the other by now. Hope it worked out for you
@@SeztheVet Yes, unfortunately my chicken passed away. She fought strong for a while and then one day passed. I don't know how it happened, because I was on vacation at the time and my dad was taking her to the vet every morning for injections. I'm very sad about it, but at least she is in heaven now :)
U should go to the miss world contest mam❤❤❤❤❤

Ps thank you for the kind words :)

And so I have to feed her myself the whole wheat bread. Otherwise she will lose more weight. She has become a little thin already.. she breathes through her mouth if I make her sit on the couch. When I place her on the floor she starts breathning through nose again.
Also she has tucked her neck in her shoulders. Please help. I love her so muchh!
I'm so sorry to here this, it sounds like she is a really bad way. Unfortunately what you're describing are symptoms of a generically unwell hen. Check out the latest episode on how to perform an indepth clinical exam of a chicken, that may point you in the right direction.
Hi, my Lucy is about 6 weeks. She’s a silkie and earlier today she was sneezing and had some drainage on her nose. I don’t if it was the sneezing that cause it but her mouth was watering mixed with clear mucus. It sounded like she was wheezing
I don't think feeding bread to chooks is a good idea
Thank you for the informative knowledge but i didnt get most of it, I'll get to the point, i have a few chicks like 7 months old and i think they got infected with som cold, they kinda like sneeze n have a ruffling sound when they breathe and they dont have an appetite. Som even hav watery eyes and i hope u can tell me a first aid cure, they occasionally open mouth breathe too
Thanks for your questions.

If it's cool at night and no reason to be heat stressed, then no this wouldn't be normal.
Please 😭😭

And also, she is overweight...she is a meat chicken (now a pet) and she's lost weight since having her little bout with ascites - I guessed right at the time and began restricting her calories...she's still too heavy but she's not nearly as fat as she was. lol
Would lymphoma of the vagus nerve cause a chickens' crop to intermittently overflow? This bird's crop will also occasionally overflow - water usually.
hello, my rooster has began to continuously gape numerous times a day followed by shaking his head after each gape. he has also become more lethargic as he spends more time sleeping. we put him and the hens on flubenvet for 7 days, but he still does it. some of the hens are now beginning to do the same even if they were on flubenvet so whatever he has could be contagious. they don't have runny nose or cough. I have no idea what he has and vets around me don't specialise in chickens. what could they possibly have and what is the cure? thank you very much and have a lovely day
firstly I would say just to make sure they are actually getting the flubenol. it makes the water taste funny so they may not drink it. if they're not, then give in some cat meat, or straight down the beak with some water to Dilute it down. other causes include viral, bacterial, pox inside the mouth, and more. the episode gives a run down of causes.
.
Mine is breathing loudly and coughing
that doesnt sound good :(
@@SeztheVet It was labored breathing (loud wheezing in and out and coughing). Living in central Florida we see high high temps. I have 4 week old chicks that I just took outside for their first walk about in the grass (in a safe metal crate, with me in nice heavy shade.) 2 chicks are mouth breathing.
Would recommend dropping one in to your local vet clinic for a post-mortem exam if you can
I use oak tea to keep by chickens healthy, they have never been sick .
Interesting where did you find this out? And how do you give it?
@@CoyoteCrossingSanctuary I would look at T
trees in your area.
