  • This piece of Black Locust was doomed to be firewood but I just had to give it a chance.
    Even with the areas that were bad it turned it to a cute little hollow form.
    The Paduak lid really topped it off!

      Thank you David! It seems very stable for sure. The structure of the grain seems to work together to keep the stress equal. At least that is my theory. Looking forward to turning more. It does get harder as it drys. I have had it for a year and a half and can tell the difference.

    I have yet to turn in reverse except by accident when parting off after sanding and forgot to put it in forward. I need to give it a try on a hollow form. Thanks for sharing and I definitely hit the subscribe button and a like.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 роки тому

      Thank you very much Tom. If you have room you can step to the back side of the lathe and still turn forward. But it will seem backward so nothing gained there. Except if you do not have reverse. The other thing is moving the head stock to the opposite end but that is a lot of work. Turning in reverse is the same as when you can put a face plate on the outboard side of the head stock and the lathe is running forward. I have done that many times on very large lathes on pieces to large to fit over the bed. Fairly easy to get used to.

      Thank you Glen I appreciate your comment. I will try and do a video where I show much more of the finishing.
      Are you interested mostly in the sanding sealer and shellac process? I have some more smaller pieces of Black Locust that would be perfect for doing a turning and be able to show more of the finishiing.
      Take care,
      Gary

    • @glencrandall7051
      @glencrandall7051 4 роки тому

      @@ThePapa1947 What I prefer is showing every step of the process for every project. But I don't mean to say you should show each entire step. Just enough to indicate the general idea. You open up well with the rough shaping of the work piece. Then mount on the lathe and show the turning. but I want to see your sanding method, first grit only, you can say how many grits were used. The same with the finish. Sanding sealer, then the finish and buffing, etc. Not a lot of detail but just enough to show what you used and how you processed it. And I would like this process applied to every project. I really dislike having to go back and search for a finishing or sanding video. If you are concerned about run time these steps need not add more than a minute.

    Wouldn't it be better to put a mortis on instead of the tenon? That way when you are finished it's done and no having to turn it over and cut the tenon off. Beautiful love it💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 роки тому +1

      Hi J"Lyssa, couple reasons not to use a mortis on this one. Because I had to hollow it out the tenon offers a little better support. And normally I like to dress up a tenon after it is done so I would still be flipping it around. But I do like to use a mortise now and then on some things. I tend to use a mortise on a segmented turning when I do not want to cut away the segments. Might be doing that on an upcoming turning.

    Yup, the lid changes the whole appearance of that piece, Gary. It's a nice design but the wood is kind of bland but once you put that lid on, POP, it all comes together! So you did all the hollowing with just the one hollower you made? I guess I didn't think it would reach in that far. Well, it worked! I used to make lidded things, maybe I should give that a go for something different. Well, I guess it won't be different now that YOU'VE done it! LOL! Great job, my friend, keep'em coming! Hey, we're up to Phase 2 up here. I can go get a haircut! HA!

      Thanks Phil and for sure the wood was pretty plain. That is why I wanted to leave the saw cut and the flat area on one side.
      But the rot at the top had to go. Glad it did or I may not have done the lid. Who know..lol
      Yes just used the hollowing tool. Barely made it but it just fit. All the way to the bottom.
      I am certain you can find a piece of wood full of bug holes, bark, voids and wide cracks that will be different. THE PERFECT PIECE OF WOOD!
      We are still in phase 1. Our county is in the top 3 worst areas.

    Great piece! Question: while hollowing with the carbide on the black locust, are you laying it flat or turning the bar at an angle? To me it seemed like the bar was angled. I know some turners shear scrape with bar turned 30-45 degrees. Just curious.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 роки тому

      Thank you very much Louis. I had it laying flat. I made all my bars so the insert is flat to the turning. I plan on making another where the insert will be on an angle but I will need to get some more steel bar.
      I have one round carbide insert that is ground with a negative rake on it and on some turnings I will use it. Mostly on end grain ones.

      Thank you Rex. I like Laguna a lot. Yesterday I turned a very heavy chunk of wood on it. Worked great...but I had it balanced just right. I was really happy with how it handled it.
      Yes I have made all my carbide tools. I made a swan neck holler also but it would not fit into this turning but I got by fine without it. Having reverse on your lathe really helps. You do want to make sure the chunk is locked on though if running in reverse.

    Another great video!!! I do have a question, I’m new to the lathe, when you’re roughing a piece out, like the top you made, about what rpms do you run using your roughing gouge? Or is it a “feel thing”? Thank you!!!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you Chris! This piece was around 1500 RPM. Higher speed smooths out the square piece taking the bounce out of it.
      The smaller the piece the faster you will want to have it spinning.
      It is a matter of how much material passes the cutting edge per second. A small diameter is much less than lets say a 12 inch diameter at the same RPM.
      Still it is a little about feel as well. Such as how sharp the tool is and how it is cutting a particular piece of wood. And the tool rest height comes into play as well. Strips cut from a 2X4 would make great practice pieces.
      Hope this helps...
      Take are and happy turning,

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 роки тому

      It is very hard for sure. A nice sharp tool will leave a very nice finish though.
      Just watch out doing an end grain turning. It will grab very easily. I have a video of a Droop Bowl that is end grain . I had to stop and make a hollowing tool to get it done. Even then I ended up buying one of the negative rake inserts.

    What's the difference between forward and reverse?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Mandi, so forward is when the work turns toward you and is used most of the time. Reverse is when the work spins away from you. So if turning the inside the tool needs to be on the far side of the work.
      And when sanding in reverse the dust moves away from you.
