Left Canon when I wanted less restrictive video so changed from a 5d mkIV to an A7III and now would not go back, I'm now on an A7 V and a load of 3rd party lenses and there's literally not a single lens or body within the Canon that would interest me. Such a shame but

I'm an RF shooter with a Red Komodo and I was thinking about picking up an R7, these lenses are pretty compelling for me. Fast, sharp, AF, dust and splash resistant. And those zoom lenses look TINY. But I just bought a 24-105 2.8 so I will probably not be picking up any more lenses this year lol

I completely agree. As a Canon shooter for over 15 years, I waited patiently for any indication that Canon would open their system. However, two months ago I made the switch to Sony.
The advancements in mirrorless camera technology, particularly their autofocus capabilities, were too compelling to wait any longer. Consequently, I transitioned from my Canon 5D Mark IV to a Sony A7R V.
While the Canon EOS R5 would have met my needs, I was hesitant to invest in a system that locked me into a single vendor. Beyond the pricing advantage of third-party lenses, the expanded range of options is equally important to me.
One of my newfound favorites is the Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 lens, perfectly suited to my shooting style. This option wouldn't have been available if Sony hadn't allowed third-party lenses for the E-Mount.
In summary, I'm among the customers who have left the Canon system due to their restrictive mount-system policy.

I'm a Canon shooter that's been really hoping for 3rd party lenses; not just for cheaper lenes, but also for a better selection. Only a few years ago, i used to say, that even if the other brands had better sensors, canon had the best selection of lenses and accessories. It's never about the camera, it's about the system. Canon just isn't releasing new glass fast enough to really fill their ecosystem.

Canon R7 user here. I love Sigma 18-35 f1.8 art. Absolutely awesome lens on R7 for video AND photo. Ofc it's adapted, but with the Meike MK-EFTR-C Drop-in ND filter adapter. Perfect.
If I will buy Sigma RF depends on price and reviews.

I use an R5 with the adapter. The first time I took it into the woods to photograph birds, I had my EF based Sigma 150-600c on it. Using animal eye detect, it locked onto a chicadee's eye; black head, tiny black eye. Third party lens and it worked very well. Since then, it's only gotten better with the firmware updates. I'll be staying with Canon.

At a core level, when basic shit like lens hoods are an extra cost accessory it really says all you need to know about canon.
That said, allowing Sigmas crop glass on the mount saves Canon money, that way they don't have to develop anymore crop sensor glass of their own and can still claim some kind of value to R10 & R7 buyers.

And the basic adapter is fine if you have a camera that has 3 adjustment dials like the R5 or R6. Control ring adapter does add the extra control, not needed but can be handy, but it's up to you if it's worth twice the price for a control that you might never even use. I suspected Canon would eventually open up, but only once they felt their own in house lens offerings were fleshed out and mature enough. And APSC makes business sense as Canon has clearly not roadmapped dedicated APSC lenses - not enough margin or market.
Canon is relying on owning such a *massive* segment of the commercial and professional markets (who have the deepest pockets), and assuming that the big buyers will stick with the brand they know. They don’t care about us smaller outfits as we don’t buy dozens of bodies at a time - they are happy to ignore us as we only buy bodies and lenses occasionally.

  • @MrTeebaum
    @MrTeebaum 2 місяці тому +3

but there is one point that is always ignored - with an adapter, EF lenses work like native lenses on the RF mount - not “just about as good as it gets” - no, like native lenses. and EF lenses are a dime a dozen.
these adapters are so cheap that i can easily attach one to any EF lens - and sometimes it's even an advantage if i use an adapter with a filter slot.

    • @kevindiaz3459

A philosophy I kept trying to instill in people was that EF lenses were the new third party lenses for RF, including the third party EF lenses, only with better overall AF performance on an R series camera. It never caught on LOL (though it was obviously a popular thing to do, and nearly all Canon shooters I know are adapting at least a couple lenses).
I still have a bunch I use from the EF mount; Tamron 35mm F1.4, Sigma 50mm F1.4, EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS II, Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 are the main ones I still use often enough to hang onto.

Lenses are now also expensive because we are nowhere near sales figures we had 10-15 years ago. You need to sell at least millions of such lens to make it somewhat cheaper, because 3-5 years of development cost, prototyping, testing, tooling, NPI and also marketing and distribution are expensive investment. This is also reason why for example Ricoh barely releases any new Pentax lens. There is very limited market for such things and it results in death spiral because without good price there are no sales, without sales there are no money for development and without new products customers say bye bye.

Canon seem to be dipping their toe in the water to see what impact it will have on their camera and lens sales without taking any risks. I'm not a Canon shooter but I see many dedicated Canon users are happy using older EF glass. I can't see this stance attracting new users to the Canon system. Who really wants to buy into a system where you have to adapt older lens to stay in budget.

when i kitted out for weddings after using Fuji for 5+ years, I chose between Canon and Sony - having used an R5 and an A7III for a year side by side, and went for Sony. Canon's bodies are more expensive for similar features, and at the time (2022-2023) Canon had just announced there would be no third party lenses for their new bodies. I am now extremely happy with 2 Sony a7IVs and a full suite of Sigma ART and Tamron zoom lenses, which all in was about the same price as one Canon body and a few lenses.

I agree with everything you just said Matt. On the other hand Canon absolutely NEEDED more APSC lenses. Their 4 (FOUR) rf-s apsc lenses were essentially kit lenses, and not very good ones at that. No PZ rf-s lenses. No lens hoods with $500 lenses???? C'mon....
Canon seems to have forgotten what made the EF mount so popular is that you can get so many great third party options with it. That's what built them up in the 90s and early 2000s, and they seem to have completely forgotten that.

After working with Nikon for a long time, I shot exclusively with Canon DSLR cameras for eight years, working in different countries around the world. I liked this system mainly because lenses and accessories for it were available for rent in any place I visited, even in remote places. Photo agencies also most often suggested Canon. A few years ago, when Canon announced its mirrorless cameras, I realized that I was ready to switch to such a system, since I had seen analogues from Sony in work. I waited a bit for the development of the Canon system and eventually switched to Sony. Firstly, I can still use Canon DSLR lenses. Secondly, I can buy or rent a huge number of lenses and accessories for Sony, while the Canon mirrorless system is extremely rare, and much more expensive.

I'm a Canon shooter. As you've mentioned, my R7 is my "back-up" camera on which my ff lenses work beautifully given the high MP. However, it's smaller lenses that I want to take for "grab & go" and on hikes (I'm in my 7th decade, and hikes in the US Pacific Northwest typically begin by heading up the side of a mountain.). So, I am glad to see this 10-18mm option, since Canon's own RF-S with that range, which I own, is pretty really weak.

I was a 40 year Nikon apsc shooter and recently switched to Canon because Nikon don't really have an aspc camera offering anymore - the auto focus on the Zfc Z50 and Z30 is way behind the AI system available on Canon and the sensor used in these cameras is ancient. Even the VFM R50 has very similar AI Auto Focus to the R3 - They also have some great value RF lenses especially telephoto options. I recommend you try out the Canon R50 with the RF 100-400 available for around 1250 dollars and compare it with any VFM options for Nikon or Sony using 3rd party or branded lenses. In my opinion nothing comes close at the price. The 100-400 even works reasonably well with the RF 1.4 converter giving you almost 900mm of equivalent reach in good light.

As a former Canon shooter the lack of third party lenses is what has kept me from investing in an RF system. My dream setup would be a R6ii with a few of the small Sigma primes. Sadly it looks like I’ll have to keep waiting for that.
It’s disappointing because I was a dedicated Canon shooter for many years and absolutely loved my 5Dii. However, like many people I was frustrated by how slow Canon was to embrace the mirrorless revolution: it felt like they were in denial for many years. I waited and waited and finally gave up and bought into the Fuji system, which I now love.
Frankly I don’t really see the appeal of Canons RF-S bodies when there are so many better APS-C cameras systems available. These Sigma lenses are great but they exist on enough other systems already.
It seems Canon still think they can control the pace of innovation in the camera market. Let’s hope they realise their mistake quickly and open the RF mount properly to all manufacturers

Since purchasing the R5 when it came out I have bought only 1 RF lens (14-35 F/4) and currently don't plan on buying any more. I still have my 5DS and all my EF lenses but my money in the last 5 years goes to lenses for the Sony cameras. I bought the R5 so that I could continue to use my 500 F/4 II and it works reasonably well with it (autofocus and image quality are amazing but it is the only camera I own that crashes regularly when I'm shooting). I take is as a second camera for fun but if I need to get the shot the Sony A7RV is the one that doesn't fail. Currently the Sigma 500 F/5.6 is looking like a good option to allow me to just move on and stick with one system but Sony have set a limit for those in terms of teleconverters.

I survived the EOS R, moved on to the R6 but quickly moved up the R5. I been contemplating adding a R6 ii or R7 as a second body. BUT, I am still on the fence about investing more in Canon cameras and more RF lenses. Sigma's announcement is nudging me away from Canon.
I have a Sony A7 iv in my shopping cart for two reasons. 1. Sony makes great cameras with only perceived ergonomic and menu system deficiencies to Canon. 2. Tamron have the 150-500, 35-150, 28-75 G2, 70-300 all Z-mount AF lenses. Nikon's Z wildlife lenses are hard to beat for choice (I'm looking at the 180-600 personally) with their small size 400/600/800 primes, then 400tc & 600tc. Nikon's AF is now up there with the best too. Really does bring a smile to my face every time I use the camera. (Currently have z24-70 2.8 S & z105 2.8 S macro, adding the Laowa 90mm 2x macro soon then 180-600..what more do I need ha!). Nikon's own Z mount range are amazing.

*Canon 100-500 is nearly £3k, when for £1500-1799 you can get the Z 180-600 or Tamron 150-500 for £1k. So in certain cases I can get lenses for less money with no real world difference in image quality. In fact Nikon's Z lenses are often praised for their amazing quality. I found Canon's L series to be great quality but they priced me out of my comfort zone, with no option for 3rd party lenses.

I have an R7 but frankly I've found that there are two lenses I can use with it and be happy: an adapted Sigma EF 30MM f/1.4, which is super sharp, or the RF 100-500 L, which is also sharp enough to resolve the 32 MP sensor. I also have an R6 and R5 and I'm not lacking for choices for RF mount lenses. However, the words "inexpensive" and "affordable" are NOT part of Canon's current RF lens vocabulary. That said, you get what you pay for; the 50 MM f/1.2 is a FANTASTIC lens. But I wouldn't mind having a native RF version of Sigma's 20MM f/1.4. That's a super sharp lens! Absolute banger! Thanks for reporting on this!

I own the Sony a6700 and the canon R7, I bought the a6700 at the start of the year and the R7 when it was released, I have barely used the r7 since buying the a6700 because I have 4 x sigma/Sony APSC lens that are small, compact, sharp with wide aperture’s.
I was contemplating selling the R7, but these lenses absolutely change the game for me, I’d be very interested in a APSC Tele zoom APSC lens for sport that could actually utilise the R7’s 15 frames a second without an f8 aperture

The only manufacturer that I know it can pull that off and has done it for years is Leica. I'm sticking with Sony, there's so much out there and the selection is unbeatable.

I just switched to Canon FF recently. I have never been a big user of third party glass. I am glad it is out there and I think that you are spot on about this being good short term but a bad decision long term. I am an enthusiast and not shooting professionally (for money). If I were I may have a different opinion as sticking with a stubborn manufacturer is not a great business decision. I mostly chose Canon for the autofocus ability as I was previously shooting Fujifilm. So far I have found the Canon IQ to be slightly better but mostly if I am pixel peeping. Ergonomics and low light performance of the FF (R6 ii) sensor seem to be about 1 stop better. However the focus (especially continuous tracking) is next level. I tried the Sony A7iv but the ergonomics were not nearly as good for me. I considered Nikon as I love their output but to get the same or similar focus performance I was looking at going up a level to the Z8 and I didn't want to drop that kind of cash. Maybe if they ever do support 3rd party glass I will try it but for now I am enjoying my 24-105L. Might look at some of the inexpensive primes that Canon offers as well. Thanks for the video.

I maybe wrong here so please don't crucify me - How many hobby and amateur photographers are going to require / use the full range of RF FF lenses? With a very capable RF / EF adaptor, they have a full range of EF lenses at their disposal.
For me personally as a hobbyist, I use the RF 100 400 alongwith the EF-S 18 55, and EF 70 300 adapted on my R7.

I think it's the ef adapter that has been saving Canon really. A lot of their milc lenses (and I don't know the line up by heart, I am sure there are some decent intermediaries) are either crazy expensive, albeit amazing, lenses that most can't justify/won't buy - or tokenist crap harkening back to the film era of big numbers sell, and that will do while we figure out what the market actually needs.
I think Canon have taken an apple approach to 'you will buy it anyway'. And if what Matt says is true, that people are actually leaving canon, this could be good news. Maybe it will even move into another field, like computers too....
But then, when a massive tech youtuver like mkcbhd, or whatever the Marques Brownlees channel is called, can spout so much ill informed crap including a concern that Red cameras may get worse 'because nikon cameras are worse than Canon, but here isnno evidence and clearly we don't know about the z8 or z9' - I fear many people will keep buying Canon because they always have. So Canon can keep doing whatever they want.

The R7 is rough on glass. Even the EF 70-200L IS USM Mark III isn't really sharp enough to resolve that sensor. I had to step up to the RF 100-500L to use it for wildlife. That said, the EF glass is great on my R6 and even my R5. So it's a mixed bag. That said, I found an absolute gem in the Sigma EF-S 30MM f/1.4. That's an incredibly sharp lens, and with the crop factor you're at 48MM, which is a very useful range, and it can resolve the R7 sensor. I used that 30MM with the R7 at Disneyland and it was just about perfect! So yes, there are some great adapted options.
All that said, you simply HAVE to try the RF 50MM f/1.2. Rent it if you have to but give it a shot at some point. Absolutely FANTASTIC lens! Super sharp even at f/1.2, no chromatic aberration to speak of, buttery bokeh. The price will put you out on the street but at least you'll be taking amazing street portraits! Speaking of which, can you spare any change? I mortgaged my house to buy RF lenses and now I'm homeless...

While Canon didn't allow 3rd party lenses, Canon has the best system to allow you to adapt EF lenses to the mirrorless cams with no quality or speed loss. I'm shooting all adapted EF lenses and saved a bunch of money, and get basically the same performance as the RF lenses. In fact the Sigma 50 1.4 Art on the R6 II is smaller than, and just 99% as sharp as the RF 1.2 version, and 4x cheaper! Oh and ironically the Sigma Art adapted focuses significantly faster than the RF50 1.2.... and accuracy is exceptional on the R6 II (essentially never misses).
With Sony and Nikon the adapted lenses don't work as well as their native lenses so if they didn't have 3rd party options, it would be really bad.

It's so convinient I think I'd really miss it on native RF lenses. Native RF lenses surely have advantages, espeically in terms of autofocus, weight and size, but the convenience of effectively a built-in ND filter (or CPL for that matter) is also valuable for video shooters. I was disappointed by Canon, so maybe I'll look into another camera system after the day eventually comes for my R5C. But for now, I don't care so much about USING RF lenses any more.

I may even buy the 2 APSc zoom lenses, but I have never bought a Canon FF camera, because they're either too expensive for my budget or too crippled for my taste. I have used their adapter with my existing EF & EFs glass and it works, but mounting it gets a bit tedious after a while. I decided on Nikon as my FF system because of the availability of mid range lens options. My experience with 3rd party lenses for Canon is a mixed bag and I would probably say you're generally better off with sticking with Canon, if possible.

Opening the R mount for alternative brands is a very good move on Canon's part. In addition, this strategy benefits many users who were threatening to switch to Sony (or have already switched) just for that reason. This ends up being a plus for Canon, especially for bodies with APSC sensors where Canon hasn't developed the lens lineup as much as for FF bodies and will amplify market leadership.
I'm sure third party lenses are not going to perform as well as RF lenses effectively using the 12 contacts, resulting in lower overall performance, although they are going to be great especially for those who can/want to invest less in lenses. Nobody talks about this but it is a fact. The user looks for price and does not think so much about performance, which ends up being good anyway.
It should be clarified that the RF mount has a very complex communication system between lens and camera, which allows adapted lenses (EF) to work well, but it has limitations and only Canon uses the necessary technology to achieve the best results in speed, precision and image quality.
At the end of the day, using alternative brands in RF mount is going to have similar results to using EF mount lenses with an adapter, with the only difference being the final size or 'inconvenience' involved.

Canon is clearly setting up APSC for amateurs and full-frame for professionals. They feel there is profit to take on the professional side where there is less price sensitivity, hence the high prices, high quality, and licensing restrictions. The margins are too low for Canon in the APSC lens market so they are letting Sigma and Tamron flesh those product lines out. I just wish they’d make mid-tier lenses like they used to. Not L series but better than the budget variable aperture plastic garbage they’ve been offering. The RF 200-800mm is a glimmer of hope that I expect is selling very well and maybe convince them to do more in the mid-tier like the old days but I’m not holding my breath. Amateurs will just have to settle for scraps or shell out for professional priced lenses it seems.

I have been shooting Canon for the longest, clear back to film days (I still have two Canon 1N HS cameras and a spare for parts). But Sony dragging their feet on those slots has put the kibosh on a change to Sony. I think the Nikon purchase of Red may be an enormous boost to Nikon. they screwed themselves so much, also with this move.
Same as for leica L mount. It is a snowball effect. The mount is aging and there are still no 3rd party lenses available (l-mount has some in their partnerships) This also means another (couple) of year(s) delay for cheap lenses on the 2nd hand market. Even if they release full frame 3rd party lenses in 2025, then it takes at least 2 years before the first lenses show up on the used market.
This makes the gap so much bigger for RF and Canon and their users will suffer for it for years to come.
First it was a dick move and I think they made a lot of money of it.

I agree, as a customer, that it's disappointing that it's only apsc lenses. However, I wouldn't put much stock into that Canon and Nikon are making business mistakes about restricting third party lenses because Sony is trying to do the same.
But how is Sony doing the same? Look at their 16-25 and 24-50 f2.8 lenses. They are directly competing against the third party full frame f2.8 zooms. And in the retail floor space this matter a lot because customers won't be seeing those third party options as often anymore. Then there is also the 15 fps articifial limitation. Whether 15 fps is useful to you anecdotally is not important, this limitation marks that future third party lenses can never be equal to Sony's.
This isn't to say, "Oh no, Sony bad", because it's not. It's just that Sony has come to the same conclusion as Canon; they need to drive out the third party lenses. Sony can't just ban them at this point though so they have to create products to suppress the sales of third parties. You can argue that this is good for the customer, and in the short term it indeed is for us. In the long term it can be too so as long as they continue the "budget" line. However, just know that Sony are trying for the same platform control Canon, and Nikon to a lesser extent, already has. It's just an interesting comparison of business strategies.

I got plenty of rf lenses. not the expensive once but the lenses that canon make for rf are still good for me. I'm was a sony user but because the software I was using for business didn't except sony at the time sony not allowing 3rd party software to be used with sony cameras. Sony now does allow 3rd party software but I'm to invested in canon now that it's not in my best interest to go back to sony right now.

Canon R6 MkII user, not going to fall out with Canon, happy with using the adapter along with my EF L lenses that I’ve built up and would lose a ton of money trading in and upgrading to RF comparable glass, get the feeling Canon are not shifting as much RF L lenses as they would like, just way too expensive for hobbyist photographers and a huge investment for pros to justify.

I shoot Canon. EOS R, RP, R7 - but mostly all 360 photos with the R and the 8-15F4L at 12mm (it's a commercial rig for me). To some degree you can test a person's personality type based on owning Canon. Mostly stubborn, cares less about gear, or uninterested in anything else than a result that works... which is me.
Would it be nice to have lots of other options? Sure. Would it make my workflow faster or better quality? Not likely. With the R and the 8-15 at 12 mm and a 360 stitch of 4 around, that makes a 14k wide equirectangular image, which happens to be the biggest that Google Street View hosts. So more pixels are luxury and might in rare circumstances add a bit of sharpness when scaled down.
So... does this matter? Not much, for me.

I am Canon user and my only complaint is there are no wide L lenses. I am using 24 and 35 exclusively with an adapter

As a long time Canon, Nikon, and Leica user I’ve never bought third party lenses. I have been satisfied by the lens selection from each manufacturer. Currently my largest lens selection is Canon on a R6II body. I use all EF glass with out issues. In most cases AF works better than on DSLR bodies. I know Nikon blew it for older Nikon D lenses by it not being AF compatible with the Z bodies. So I have not bought any new Z bodies. I doubt current Canon user are switching brands because they can’t buy a Sigma lens. That just sounds ridiculous. Of course if I could not use my older EF glass on the newer RF bodies I would have been upset. But Canon made the adapter for EF to RF fully compatible with all EF lenses.

I'm a Canon user and have been for many years. This doesn't bother me at all as I prefer to stick to lenses made by the same company as the camera. The last time I looked at buying a third party lens was pre-mirrorless. Sigma was half the price, but the reviews consistently warned that the Sigma lenses tended to miss focus every now and then so make sure you overshoot. At the time I preferred to save up a bit more and get the Canon lens just so that I didn't have to deal with that. Now, I don't even look at other manufacturers when I want a new lens.
