Yeah, Americans aren't as eager to dive into Lupin (as of yet). But who knows, the new CGI movie could bring in more fans. It's interesting how Europe's been a home for Lupin, considering his Japanese origins, but then again, the character is based on a French character anyways.
@@SNKJay probably because we’ve been exposed to anime for decades. It’s not just lupin. It’s most of them from doraemon to mazinger z ... they’re as familiar to us as bugs bunny and mickey mouse.
I wish he was more popular in the US. I've been a big fan of Lupin III since 2004. Lupin III part 2 has been one of my favorite anime for a long time now.
@iluataj not in all of europe and not outside of a certain generation of course, but for gen-xers in most of western europe, Japanese anime - Lupin, Mazinger and so on, were massive and massively popular.
Dude your list and reccommends are perfect!!! Part 2 is easily the best to start with...as a series and Castle of Cagliostro is the best movie to start with! I'd also Reccommend Lupin vs Conan the movie for fans of both franchise! Also, Bart on the roof was refferenced in the Simpson's movie as well!
Yup. That's how i've always described it. It's also why i love Space Dandy...They are both well written, more mature orientated, superbly realised artistically and excellently animated FUN.
@@SNKJay Ah i remember all the open theme songs, the "sigle", how Fujiko was changed to Margot and Arsene Lupin to Arsenic AKA Lupin(Yes that's how it was translated here) in the early seasons.
@@souljastation5463 That is incredible! Goes to show how self-centered I am about America. I did aim this video at the average American anime viewer, the one who would be into DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, Attack on Titan -- but I should've reiterated that worldwide Lupin has a greater popularity. It's crazy actually how massive he is, after COVID I'd love to visit the country and see it for myself haha
I watched Castle of Cagliostro, and just kinda fell in love with the series. No matter how dark the series gets, it never feels like it takes itself _too_ seriously-it's fiction, and Lupin takes full advantage of that.
Yeah that's true. I always felt some of the content in part 1 (namely the sexual violence) being played as a gag bothered me, despite it never being taken seriously, but I see what your point is. Yeah, that's the beauty of Lupin and why I can come back to many movies/specials and have fun watching them (although the episodes of Part 1 and manga especially I'm not too fond of)
@Michael Taylor You are absolutely correct. Furthermore, Part 5 states in red jacket and pink jacket episodes that yes, these clearly took place in the past. I worded my point incorrectly, but the one I tried (failed) to make was: Unlike typical anime that have timelines like DBZ or Naruto, that have past villains/concepts that play a major role in understanding the fundamental story, Lupin doesn't require as much knowledge of the past. Rather, they immerse you in the stories and heists you get to watch. At the time I made this video, I didn't word this right on accident. My mistake. I plan on making a follow-up video to this one, that goes more in-depth and fixes up some of the mistakes I made when talking about this show. Mr X in Part 2 coming back, along with the wording of the artists, declared Part 2 to take place 5 years after Part 1. Afterwards, it's debatable when Parts 3,4,5, and woman called Fujiko Mine take place. All the "parts" series (from 1-5) DO in fact take place in the same universe, something I misspoke in the video. The case I tried to make was that a newcomer could jump into Part 2 OR Part 4, since Part 4 is more of a soft reboot and doesn't rely on past gimmicks that happened in previous decades (but if the viewer knows these things, they are rewarded). You are absolutely correct though, I messed up on this point, in my attempt to try and make a universal statement about how easy it is to get into Lupin I ended up butchering that idea entirely and saying something false. My apologies :)
@Michael Taylor Yeah, I think Princess Clarisse from Cagliostro also shows up at the very last episode for a small cameo, there were a lot of callbacks to previous parts to try and show the timeline, but said timeline isn't necessary to understand for newcomers. Still though, yeah, there is a timeline. Just not super big, but I should def make another video and talk more about that while also correcting myself haha
A lot of people feel that way, it's largely because in the states Lupin just doesn't get enough street cred, the same can be said with other staple Japanese shows, it certainly has some appeal, and has had it throughout the years, but I would say as of now, most people watching anime aren't TOO familiar with Lupin. But that's fine, I was never begging for the show to be mainstream, just to have more spotlight. Especially since the works it inspired (Cowboy Bebop, Persona 5) are strangely much bigger, which in hindsight, doesn't make sense to me, imo
@@Gigas0101 I've got a video coming up about Part 6, but I'm eager to watch it! Sherlock Holmes and Lupin together feels like such a fever dream, so cool! The CGI film was incredible, but I was missing out on the more darker qualities of Lupin's character. I suppose they made the CGI film with more mainstream appeal in mind, (and to be similar to Cagliostro) but it was a fine Lupin film to watch, definitely in the top 5 for me.
@@arkinyte13 Lupin is French; though there are uncomfirmed rumours that he's partially Japanese. His popularity in Italy stems from the fact that his most-used vehicle is the little Fiat500. It's one of the most iconic cars of its time, similar to the original VW Beetle or the Austin Mini Cooper. These were 'cheap' little cars for everyday people, which is why the public connected so well with the rich gentleman thief, who put his trust in the same little car they did.
I don't know about other countries, but I'm italian and Lupin III isn't underrated at all here in Italy, it's literally part of the pop culture! Everyone knows the show, even people who don't like animes, and there are some fanmade italian movies. I recently found out that some people call crooked cigarettes "sigarette alla Jigen" 😁
That's awesome! I'd love to visit Italy someday, just to see how popular it is haha! But yeah I believe you, Italy, France, and Japan are where Lupin is popular. Strange how unpopular it is in the states, especially considering how much it borrows from the west (i. e. James Bond). Fanmade movies? I gotta check those out now haha! "Sigarette alla Jigen" heh, that's funny, but also cool! I wonder if Lupin got popular in Italy thanks to Castle of Cagliostro, and/or if it was just because that side of the world in general found popularity with this show. Either way, thanks for the info, definitely interesting!
@@SNKJay lupin immediately became very popular, but the second series of the saga represented the definitive boom so that over 40 years after television is together with dragon ball the only anime that continues to broadcast constantly, in Italy it is not even considered as a cartoon character but an icon almost like a vip
@@SNKJay Hello, from France here. I would say that Lupin has been few and far between here, the early series (the second if I remember) did get broadcast in the late 80s under the name "Edgar de la Cambriole" (which means Edgar the thief") but then a big hiatus until part IV and V which we did get regularly. And even then, only a 50-ish épisodes out the 155 were subbed. Definitely more popular in Italy though, like Urusei Yatsura; although we did get most of that show from 1988 to 1992, there has been no broadcast since 1998, and no French language release of any stuff besides the movies since 2003, whereas in Italy you can get Italian subbed Blu Rays!
My friends actually got me into Lupin III with the CGI movie, I actually really liked it but didn't understand what was going on so they showed me Blood Spray, Jigen's Gravestone, and Fujiko's lie and I basically got hooked
Yup, those 3 films were incredible, I'm amazed at how good they are actually haha. Blood Spray in particular, but the tone they go for, the dark muddy atmosphere SCREAMS Monkey Punch and what he originally wanted, it's amazing. Definitely a more nicher part of Lupin, it's too dark for some people but I love it. If you want to understand better the cgi film, I would suggest watching more Lupin films (like Castle of Cagliostro). Since you've already seen the super serious side of Lupin, everything else you'll watch will be hella light-hearted, but that's okay they're still great. Voyage to Danger is terrific, Island of Assassins is pretty dark (but not as dark as woman called fujiko mine movies)
@@SNKJay Thanks for the recommendations I will definitely check them out. When I saw The First I thought all of Lupin would be lighthearted like that so when I got to bloodspray it hit me really hard that Lupin was able to get that dark and honestly, I have a lot of respect to have a franchise that can branch out to multiple themes and tones like that.
Incredibly dark, but a wonderful introduction haha! It's my favorite, next to part 2, but I know it isn't a popular pick. Part 4 and 5 in their own right stand tall as well, the writers for this franchise are pretty good
Yeah, Part 2 and Part 4 are your best places to start, but you could watch the woman called Fujiko Mine series too, or my personal fav, Castle of Cagliostro. Part 3 I wouldn't recommended starting with, just my opinion. Part 5 is connected to part 4, so for consistency sake (there's hardly much consistency within Lupin already as it is) it would make sense to see 4 before 5 in my eyes. Part 2 kinda gives you everything in one, but it's got older animation, so if you aren't for that, part 4 is your best bet. If you don't want to watch a tv show and just want to view the movies, Castle of Cagliostro gives you a full picture of everyone in action. imo
Oh yeah, even though it strays away from the usual image of Lupin, it's INSANELY GOOD. I didn't talk about that or Jigen's gravestone, or Fujiko's Lie. All quality films, but Blood Spray is easily finest and best animated one. The people from Red Line know their stuff!
Haha, true. I hope one day Lupin isn't so underrated, I don't mind my video doesn't have many views, so long as I can spread awareness one day. But eh, it's whatever tbh, thanks for checking out my vid!
I’m here cause of all the “Lupin the III out of context” videos I’ve liked and from those alone, I see that this show was way ahead of it’s time. So much of humor is just zany unexpected crack that is just *chef’s kiss.*
Yeah, I know what you mean. Thanks for being here btw! Glad people are watching this video. Yeah, those Lupin videos get recommended to me out of nowhere, I find myself liking those as well haha. I like how varied Lupin can be, given how many writers have worked on the many different shows/movies/tv specials/OVAs. Great stuff!
Man, I miss this show. Lupin the 3rd was HUGE in Spain during the 80s and 90s, and I remember watching parts 1-3 when I was a kid. Then there's the huge gap between part 3 and the modern era, so the show faded into obscurity here. I knew about the Fujiko Mine episodes, but never watched them, and I straight up had NO idea that parts 4 and 5 even existed. Time to catch up. This earned you a sub, good sir.
Thank you! Glad you told me about Spain, I've uncovered Italy and France were areas outside of Japan where Lupin found success, but now you're telling me Spain -- wow, interesting! Yeah, it's easy to see how this show fade into obscurity, but it's rather unfortunate that's happened. Only reason why I felt compelled to make a video on the series, and since it holds a dear place in my heart, I definitely plan on making more videos pertaining to Lupin, I've only barely scratched the surface! Thanks again!
Amazing video. Thanks a lot for this. I really wanted to start watching Lupin the Third after I enjoyed watching Castle of Cagliostro. This is truly a hidden gem that I have heard of before but never watched it. Thank you.
Best part about Lupin is that you can just go nuts with it. There isn’t really a recommended watch guide bar for the newer seasons that need to be seen in order. Just pick something and bombs away, have fun. Hell, you don’t even need to watch episodes in order. You could just pick a random one from part 2 or 3 or 1 or whatever and know what’s happening. That’s the beauty of it
Something I've noticed about Lupin, there is different takes like James Bond when it switches between goofy (Connery, Lazenby, Moore, Brosnan) and dark (Dalton, Craig). In fact, you can tell Lupin's creators LOVED Bond (hell, some dubs even mention James Bond, to the point where Fujiko meets a Connery-like former agent, Walther and all). Castle of Cagliostro had different dubs. One I remember most was on VHS back when Lupin was voiced by Bob Bergen (who voices several Looney Tunes characters, as well as being a former voice double for Mark Hamill in various Star Wars games).
Damn I didn't even discuss that, but you're right! Castle of Cagliostro, yeah, it had many different dubs, one of them had Solid Snake VA -- but idk if they ever did a recent one with the current voice cast for english dub. Either way, great movie! I should talk more about the James Bond influences, there are so many you're right lol!
@@matthewallen445 Ah yeah, the manga and streamline dub. I only watched the David Hayter one, I heard they also had a dub for a child-friendly version of the film, with David Hayter but less swear words if I'm not mistaken
Not really sure where Monkey Punch was taking Lupin in the original manga. He was a spree killer & a his idea of flirting was to jump on women & tear their clothes off. If he was intended as a James Bond back then, it was an evil one. Thank god Hayao Miyazaki & Isao Takahata cleaned him up into a modern day Robin Hood for the Green Jacket TV series.
@@LikaLaruku Yeah, ngl I realy wasn't a fan of his part 1 and manga version, if not for the later reworkings of the character I reckon he wouldn't be as popular
I discovered Lupin way back in the early 1980s as a teenager with the arcade game 'Cliff Hanger,' which turned out to consist entirely of scenes from a couple Lupin films. I was fascinated by the animation and the action, but had no idea it was from an actual series. Years later, I spotted the VHS cover of 'Castle of Cagliostro' at Blockbuster and instantly recognized it as the Cliff Hanger guy. Now 'Castle' is a family favorite.
Oh wow, that's awesome! Cliff Hangar, Edgar, all the names they used for this guy to avoid copyright -- that's awesome you found out where it came from! The movies they used were mostly from Castle of Cagliostro, as you're familiar with, I forget the other films they used scenes from, but it was around that time period. I hope more films are localized here in the states, there are so many great Lupin films that haven't had their time to shine yet like Cagliostro!
Happened to stumble onto part 5 the other day, and boy did I got invested in it. Thanks for this, I really needed a crash course on how the other parts are looking. This helps me a lot. Tbh, the character Lupin reminds me a lot of Tintin, a character from a European comic (if I'm not mistaken). A young journalist at heart, always getting his nose into trouble - from being roped into treasure hunts to busting down crime rings. I found the similarities in how while they are not entirely invincible, they always have their chances with luck and wits to get through sticky situations.
The tintin comparison is definitely something I've come across before, I do wish that character still had popularity (or maybe he has, I just don't know). Np, thanks for watching!
I'm fine with being underrated, so long as I can tell people about this show. A lot of people know it already actually, and have seen it. It's just that there are incredibly niche parts of this show I quite frankly believe many Westerners aren't aware of
I started off with "Castle of Cagliostro". It's such a great move. Later I watched more of the Lupin movies, which wasn't bad however it was nothing like Cagliostro. As you said, I would also recomend to start with Castle of Cagliostro or Lupin The III. Part 4
I got into this anime when they used to air it on Adult Swim years back. This is one of my favorite animes and more people should watch it. Great video!
Cagliostro Castle got me into LupinIII when I was like 10 yo... Now, 10 years has passed and I'm still in love with this franchise! Everything about Lupin just fascinates me, the music, the animation... And RIP monkey Punch...
I just started watched Lupin the Third part 1, and I have already a blass. But I'm really happy to have watch your video, what give me a idea of what is waiting for me and what I must watch after part 1. This is great, and the movie look simply gorgeous.
I started watching the 2019 CGI movie and now I’m watching Part 5, and man that’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life. The art style, the music, the characters, the setting, everything about the Lupin III series is just GORGEOUS
Part 5 is amazing, and if you like that, you'll like Part 4 too. I'd say after seeing all the modern stuff, checking out Part 2 wouldn't be a bad idea! You can see where a lot of ideas for Lupin originated, since Part 2 was the renaissance period for this franchise
Man i watched "The Castle of Cagliostro" a while ago and i love it, today i watched Lupin III The First and it was awesome, your video help me a lot. Definitely i'm gonna watch the anime part 2.
I'm italian and you're right, ive grown up watching Lupin The Third episodes almost every day of the early years of my life, over here Lupin is nothing short of a cultural icon.
OK HOLD ON!! is it really that underrated in the US. Im american and its been one of my favorites since i was a kid. How do people not know about it? It used to be on toonamie and adult swim all the time
I see it as underrated in the sense that it doesn't have the same appreciation as other anime that have far surpassed the franchise in popularity (with namely Shounen anime like DBZ and Bleach). It's iconic, just not as big in America from what I've seen. I wouldn't be shocked if Goku or Ichigo were more recognizable to children in America than Lupin is, however, I too agree with you in that I grew up with Lupin. I saw Castle of Cagliostro and instantly loved it, however it would be years later in my late teens when I finally got into all Lupin stuff. It's hard to find in America, aside from Toonamie and Adult Swim, and isn't as advertised as more popular anime.
I definitely remember it being on adult swim as well, but there's a lot of stuff that was regularly aired on adult swim that has fallen out of the public American consciousness like case closed/detective Conan and saint seiya.
I got here by scouring the internet with search terms like "So am I the only guy who loves Lupin III?" & "Is Lupin III amazing, am I the only one?" My fav anime of all time and I love reading the comments below of ppl using your vid to learn how to dive even deeper into this kickass show. cheers!
Glad you came by, I'll be making more Lupin content before the year ends! Haha, I wouldn't say Lupin's my favorite, but it's definitely ONE of my favs! The series has some juicy stuff packed in it, it's just a shame this show is underrated
I remember watching Castle of Cagliostro multiple times on this one channel that would play it almost every week or so and only during summer if I remember correctly. I loved it as a kid and I honestly thought it's one of if not the best movie I had seen at the time. Still remember and love it to this day. Great video by the way.
Thanks! So, it's actually been pretty easy for youtubers to get away (myself included) with uploading Lupin content, the copyright police isn't as stingy (like they are with Shounen anime). I also loved Castle of Cagliostro as a kid, that was the first film I ever saw from Lupin.
I love lupin so much, mate. probably around 6 years ago during a Miyazaki binge I watched Castle of Cagliostro and immediately fell in love with the characters and their dynamic, within a month Im sure i watched all the tv show episodes I could find as well as every lupin movie I could find (before mid 2000s) I 100% recommend it to anybody, I'm not even a big fan of anime I just love good animation
Yup, the animation is superb, and the characters are all extremely likable! The more modern stuff doesn't disappoint either, the level of quality is well-kept, which is surprising to see
Underrated not in the west but only in the US. Here in Italy Lupin III is a beloved character by many generations, being big since the 70s. It had a big cultural influence in the last 50 years. It's great that you raise awareness for this show!
Thank you! Yeah, by west, I really only mean the US, and even then I only mean to corner my generation (Gen Z). A shame Lupin doesn't sit amongst the DBZ's and Bleach's, but lately thanks to the CGI film things have been changing for the better, slowly ofc.
Lol,here in the philippines during the 90's and early 20's the tv stations start playing anime like this at exactly 3.30 in the afternoon until 5pm(lupin 3,zenki,BTX,ghost fighter, flame of recca, samurai x) us kids have to rush home after school in order to not miss them, ahhhj i feel old now.lol
That's so cool, wow I feel kinda sad I never got much Lupin on TV when I was growing up. Or maybe I did, I just never knew... Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and Naruto were all I saw really,
I'm a huge fan of Lupin! I got into him in 98, thanks to castle of cagliostro, and was excited when his Adult Swim series launched! I made sure to at least get the 411 on who and what is all about including watching the old streamline video tapes, buying soundtracks and more. Once his popularity began, I purchased tokyopop manga and gave awareness to my friends alike on how iconic he is and how is share some parallels visually with the Pink Panther cartoons; even parody said material in episodes and movies! All in all, he's a great character, and I really feel this Series has brought awareness to the Arsene Lupins name!
I love this series as well! Pink Panther parallels are something I regret never speaking about, I really should have! That and James Bond, but on the topic of the manga -- my only real gripe with it is the sexual violence. I'll prolly make another video talking about it, but I was never too big on how rapey Lupin would get in his earlier versions. Thankfully it's been toned down considerably in more recent iterations, but yeah that was something that didn't sit too well with me, but made perfect sense for the character I guess. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the soundtracks, it's unfortunate how American Itunes doesn't have much, besides Part 4 Papik music, I was able to find most of what I wanted on Spotify, but Itunes Japan has more (like music from Prison of the Past and Goodbye Partner) which was annoying to find. But yeah, he's a great character, and shaped a lot of things that Westerners such as myself are also into (Cowboy Bebop, Persona 5, etc)
@@SNKJay Totally agree and please do a part 2 video! My fave song I'd Reccommend to you ( it can be found on UA-cam) is Silhouette. Its so smooth and awesome! Yuji Ohno is a fantastic composer! When you can, talk about the " black panther" diamond episode in part 2 which is one of the many nods to pink panther! Also, yes there have been many nods to Lupin, whether its the Beebop crew to even Samurai Jacks episode with the 'Jigen' thief! God there's so much more! Its great to chat with a fellow Lupin fan! Hit me up on FB if you can ! Till then- gotta fly!
The Detective Conan Movie with Lupin The 3rd was my first exposure to the characters of Lupin and I absolutely loved them. This led me to watching your video and now I'm going to start watching with Lupin The 3rd part 4 and then part 5. Thanks alot for this great video
You should watch The Great Pretender! It had a lot of strong beats and great use of jazz. Not to mention the animation is beautiful. You cant even tell the difference between the 2d and 3D animation
So, I've just finished that anime actually, amazing soundtrack, yeah I love the colors and I couldn't even tell what was 3D and 2D at some points! Really well done show, now THAT'S pretty underrated (although Crunchyroll's giving it a promotion and the show's on netflix too). It's got some Lupin mixed in but also has influences from various other picaresque media. Lovely show, I hope it has more seasons!
I remember I got introduced to Lupin III through the trailer for Lupin III: The First. It looked so cool. I then watched the various series and I fell in love. I recently watched the new movie and loved that too. This anime needs more love.
I LOVED this video! It’s so precise and genuine I was so surprised to find out you dont have thousands of subscribers!! Really great job, I’ll definitevelu follow your advices c:
Ah thank you! I'm just happy people are watching this vid, it seems to be recommended to a lot of people for some reason (perhaps due to the release of the new cgi film) but yeah I'm thankful you found this helpful!
I thought this character seems familiar, then I remembered that I was watching this show as a kid. Definitely gonna watch it in free time. Love the editing and commentary.
Oh, thanks! Glad I got you to recall this character -- I too forgot about Lupin for a long while until I remembered watching him on Adult Swim at some point.
"Underrated Gem of the West" Boy. This anime in Italy is one of the most popular animes along with Dragon Ball Z for 90s kids. It's a gem we willingly keep in our hearts.
I gotta check this series out thoroughly, or just more, considering the lesson of the video. Its all a blur, but I still remember cool, memorable sounding titles from episodes that aired on cartoon network: "50 ways to leave your 50ft lover" - "Lair of the Land Shark" - "Buns, guns, and fun in the sun"
That's great to hear! When I say no one, I mean it more towards the current generation of anime-goers. But, even then, Lupin isn't that underrated as I claim. I just find the online presence for the show ridiculously small, besides Twitter I can't find any other big place where fans talk about this show. But eh, my knowledge of anime is limited, I just assumed Lupin is underrated because people have larger spaces for the things that Lupin went on to inspire. The more recent shows have a low viewer rating in America especially when compared to Attack on Titan, Bleach, DBZ, Naruto, etc. Shounen anime, and that's for understandable reasons, but I refuse to like it in any capacity. I do like this show however, a lot haha
To be correct green jacket and red jacket are connected because it is literally Stated by jigen in the first episode of red jacket that it's been 5 years. In addition you have the return of the villain from Green Jacket episode 1 mr. X of the Scorpion organization in said episode of red jacket.
Yeah, I was never certain if that was truly cannon or not, but despite that, I always felt it didn't matter if someone did/didn't know about that. But you are correct, Part 1 and 2 are connected, much like Part 5 has connections to the Ghibli film and Part 2. Although, in what you've stated, that's definitely pretty exact. Thanks for reminding me!
You know what prompted me to go on a “Lupin III” binge the past several weeks? Watching that new DreamWorks movie “The Bad Guys”, and noticing a ton of similarities.
I'm honestly been seeing more reviews of Lupin the 3rd now which I'm so happy that it's getting the recognition that it deserve! I can't stressed this enough how exciting this is watching this anime. Although I wasn't born in the 90's, around my middle school age that's when I discovered Lupin Part 4 after Cowboy Bebop from Toonami on a late weekend night. I will admit at first, I didn't know what was going on since I was very curious, but then that curiosity turn into admiration for the series as a whole. I felt like I discovered a hidden gem since I hardly hear anyone talk/discuss about the show. Nowadays, I actually talk to my friend about the series and we started watching together. You wouldn't believe how exciting & suprised I was hearing that Lupin The 3rd was the main inspiration for Cowboy Bebop! :0 That sounds like a dream come true! Thanks once again for the review, It really brings back good memories, like the stunning animation & astounding soundtrack, with the franchise!
No problem, thank you for watching my video! Yep, I also got into Cowboy Bebop first. Both are fine shows, it's odd how unheard of Lupin is though. I hope the cgi movie boosts the popularity in the states more
As a kid once stumble upon my uncle while he was watching Lupin III, the few scenes sparked my interest intermediately but never had the opportunity to see it after I started college, it was finding something I lost long ago,
EDIT: I made a more factually-correct and in-depth guide on Lupin the third here: ua-cam.com/video/o9M6lPiRrFg/v-deo.html Check it out if you've got the time, and thanks again for stopping by here! Also, sorry for mispronouncing "Cagliostro", haha it should be "Caliostro" (if I'm not mistaken) After careful consideration (aka, me driving for click-bait) and a number of comments that have correctly pointed out the flaw in my earlier title, I changed the title of my video. It was initially "Most Underrated Anime of all time" to get views immorally, which actually worked in the long-run but now I'm dealing with the immoral part of it. Lupin isn't the MOST underrated show out there, but in the states I have yet to see any of the newer Part 4 and Part 5 shows competing with AOT, Bleach, DBZ, Naruto, etc. Hence, my conclusion that it was underrated, the most underrated. At least in the West, but nope that's not really true, now is it? There is still a small fanbase out there, but the online presence for this show is lacking in comparison to the grand detail and fine animation people from Japan have put in. I'm surprised in America this show isn't as successful (by this show, I mean Parts 4 and 5, and the overall franchise) as things that have acted as successors of this show (Cowboy Bebop, Persona 5, etc) I'm thankful a number of you have detailed I was wrong in click-baiting, and see now since there is more attention for the franchise, I should make another video. I'll add more info later on a new follow-up video when the time comes (sooner than you think), but I intend on not only reiterating my stance on how underrated the show is, I also plan on delivering more accurate information for the franchise that I may have missed/messed up in this video. Thanks again for the corrections, as you can tell, I do got much to learn about animez. But for the time being, I hope you enjoy this guide, and if you got anymore questions lemme know below! Thanks for watching!
Found Lupin through the new movie. Was instantly intrigued by the animation, stayed for the characters brimming with history and hilarious cartoony interactions with some serious undertones. Been going down a Lupin rabbit hole now for about two weeks and now I have a guide to help me. Thanks!
And it's honestly not THAT underrated in comparison to other shows that have practically near zero support. Lupin's got that, but in America, in this current gen. of anime, it's very easy to forget about the guy
I’m just glad I happen to be a fan of really long animes, because I’m totally willing to dive into the deep end with Lupin! So far, I’ve really enjoyed Lupin’s green jacket, red jacket, and pink jacket adventures!
Dang, that 80s Lupin is 80s artstyle asf. The others are genuinely beautiful but this conveys a lot more expression over clarity. Attitude. They're trying to put emotion on the page. You had a great montage. I can understand how its messier nature is almost intentionally disharmonious. _Frankly, it's awesome they were able to redux everything in its own self-contained little era, all its own. Like David Bowie_
I’m so glad I found this vid because I’ve been wanting to watch Lupin III for a while now but I just didn’t know where to start, and what series were worth watching. But now after watching ur vid I’ve made the choice to start with castle of cagliostro then watch Lupin part 2. Really, thank you for making this vid, it was very helpful and easy to understand!!
No problem! Thanks for watching! I did make a more updated video for this year as well, in case you want some more clarify on the newer Lupin shows that came out after this guide was made (Lupin Zero and Part 6)
Got to love that one time when jingen tried to shoot an assassin and when he realises that the armor is too thick for hes bullets to penetrate, next time he just fucking takes an anti tank rifle and fucking hip fires it.
I accidently got into Lupin III by watching the Castle of Cagliostro on Netflix about two years ago. I was bored and felt like watching an older anime movie and immediately fell in love with the series after watching it.
That's great! Netflix doesn't have the best selection when it comes to Lupin, but that's awesome you liked it from there -- I know it's pretty hard unfortunately to find streaming services that have Lupin in general though. HiDive and Crunchyroll have more Lupin content, but they both don't have a whole lot of the Lupin specials/movies. Older anime gives me different feels that I can't get today from most modern-day (most) anime movies, so I get what you're saying
I don’t even recall how I found out about Lupin but it might been one of the “out of context” videos. Many months of binge watching later I’ve watched everything I could get my hands on 😂 Best decision I made in 2020.
Castle of Cagliostro was my introduction to the series, and I absolutely LOVED IT! It reminded me of watching my neighbor Totoro with my Twin Sister and my Aunt years ago. My friends and I might watch it again together at some point.
Yup, My Neighbor Totoro has that Miyazaki touch to it, same thing with Cagliostro! Superb films, you always find something new whenever you watch them, he's got a high attention to detail :)
Haha! That's awesome! I always felt that since the world wasn't defined with like a world map (prolly because it's very similar to our world) that held me back from doing the same, but from time to time again I think of cool escapades Lupin has and wonder what it would be like for other characters (made-up and in real life)
It's kinda surprising in part V approaching the finale when Goemon and Lupin made a duel as promised, the scene shows flashbacks during their time in between Part 1-2. With subtle changes.
So, yeah there is a clear reference to those past parts in that episode (animated masterfully to fit in with the modern animation I may add) that sort of suggest the possibility of each show happening in the same universe. It's subtle, as besides that episode, some things are either left open or isn't explicity stated when in the supposed timeline events take place. The Goemon and Lupin duel was beautiful, but also pretty tragic :_ Still entertaining though
I CANT BELIEVE PEOPLE HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING INTO LUPIN??? i watched cagliostro 1 time and was instantly hooked!!! not just hayao's amazing animation and direction, but the characters and universe as well! i have lately been catching up on some of the ovas and halfway through part 2 anime.... its so good, i cant wait to watch more Lupin :) great video by the way
Thanks! Yeah, I'd say it's tricky just finding the material. Hopefully DiscoTek media, or whoever distributes Lupin media finds a way to re-release all the old and classic stuff on blu ray. Part 2 is the pinnacle of the series for me, all the zany action and adventures are contained in those 155 episodes, more than enough for me haha but I also enjoy a lot of the modern stuff too.
No problem! I hope you have a great day, and if you have thoughts/questions on Lupin the third, you can ask here! The new movie seems to be helping my video out too, so I'm also quite pleased with it
Thank you for this epic overview! I've started with Castle of Cagliostro and then binged The Woman Called Fujiko Mine which I loved! can't wait to dive deeper into the franchise.
No problem, thank you for watching! I barely scratched the surface, and soon, I will cover more on the tv specials, movies, ova, etc. There is so much more to Lupin than what I've talked about, and it's great your interested! Woman Called Fujiko Mine movies were my favorite, but for a light-hearted Lupin, Castle of Cagliostro is definitely my preferred pick!
Mine Fujiko To Iu Onna was actually the first one I watched and to this day it's my favorite! It's got everything I wanted from a show and everything about it is just iconic
It's dark and grim, but I like it. Castle of Cagliostro is for when I feel like I need to watch something light-hearted, but Woman called Fujiko Mine is what I watch in case I'm itching for a Cowboy Bebop parallel.. it's so dark I love it!
Great guide for Lupin III! I knew about the Lupin III character but I just had no idea where to begin. The CG film looked great so I just got the steelbook Blu-ray. It was Great. Immediately picked up The Castle of Cagliostro on 4K.
Thank you for watching and your comment! I still gotta get around picking up the 4k edition, although I don't got a 4k monitor haha to watch it on, I'll stick by my blu-ray until that day comes. The steelbook I bought, 100% worth it
Thank you! I agree, this anime deserves more, for all the hard work the producers pull together for this show, it's strange how it's not popular. Or popular enough for my standards at least :)
@@GirolamoG Right of course, Italy, France, and Japan are huge with Lupin! A shame it isn't popular in the states, considering it's inspired works are HUGELY popular (Persona 5, Cowboy Bebop, etc)
@@capofantasma97 The political correctness aspect was something I didn't even talk about, but you're absolutley right. I've been digging more into that actually as of late, and yeah... I could definitely see why Lupin Part 1 never made it to the states. Even Part 2 took forever, I was talking about this with another commenter in this video, but aside from any legal hassle that has plagued this character for decades, American taste isn't that great. Plain and simple, that combined with the legal trouble never boded too well for Lupin, thankfully the entire world isn't just America (something I keep forgetting) and I'm grateful Italy and Japan like this show a lot
just got into Lupin recently and I’m ashamed and disappointed that I NEVER HEARD OF THIS SHOW BEFORE. It’s amazing!! My first introduction was the cgi movie and I’ve been binge watching all the Lupin movies and they’re all so enjoyable and the cast are so charming. Currently my fav is Goemon’s Blood Spray, I loved the dark tones of the movie and it was very different from the rest☺️ But Castle of Cagliostro is also at the top
I remember watching Lupin, Case Closed, Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball, Gundam Wing and other shows in the early 2000 on Adult Swim and Cartoon Network on the east coast. I didn't have cable but went over friends or family that had cable on the weekends. Would stay up late all the time and it is nuts how tv channels have changed over the years.
I've seen some of the movies like the treasure of Hari Mao and Dragon of Doom in the 1990s in German late night television and absolutely loved it. I'm a big fan of the Lupin III franchise since then. The Castle of Cagliostro is one of my favorite movies and I love the art style. I didn't even know until recently that it was directed by Miyazaki.
Yup! Miyazaki worked on that and some episodes in part 1 and 2. I think the other Ghibli director, Takahashi, also worked on this show with him. Great stuff, Lupin's full of so much content, I'm surprised there aren't a whole lot of Lupintubers
Woah, this video rolled up on my recommended and was super useful, so thanks! I really enjoyed the tips and trivia, and I am totally gonna dive into this franchise now!
I came here thinking "Hell yea another youtuber spreading the good word of Lupin" but its the end of the video I see you have 24!!! Subs... Jeez u need Sooooooooooo MUCH more attention because this video quality is Astonishing and it surprises me that perfections like these are looked over. Good video man and Best of luck to you :p
Well thanks for watching and the sub! I appreciate it! I made this video mostly because there's a lack of Lupin material on youtube. My next video I'm releasing soon actually is another Lupin video. It'll come out soon, probably by next week. Thanks again, have a great day!
About a week after watching this, I downloaded Crunchyroll and started watching Part II. I’m not watching the episodes in a particular order, just whichever I’ve not watched that looks the most interesting. Thank you for this.
im saw it last time 5 years ago when im was a kid and now becouse of some little clips tah tim rememebred im saw teh picture with tehm in car and now im happy again
Lupin’s stealth influence throughout the media was HUGE! There are 2 other works that have “Lupin III” written all over them: - “Final Fantasy IX” - An 80’s anime called “Galactic Cyclone Braiger”. This show did the whole “Lupin in Space” thing before Lupin 8th and Cowboy Bebop. It probably also influenced bebop because music is important to the series, and the MC’s past is similar to Spike’s.
FF 9? How so? .... Oh wow, actually it kinda hit me. With Zidane.... I never even realized lol, Lupin has had a HUGE impact on Japanese culture as a whole I guess, but damn I never thought of it. I'll have to check out Galactic Cycline Braiger, sounds fascinating
I saw the new CGI trailer and thought "wow I need to check this out". This video is what I watched straight after, and it's perfect at explaining Lupin. I knew nothing about the series, but now I think I know everything I need to. I've added the Miyazaki movie to my watch list. Awesome content dude, this video will take off as soon as the algorithm picks it up. Good luck making more great videos 😃
Oh thank you so much! I appreciate you checking out my video to learn about Lupin! There are so many other movies/specials I didn't cover, I may add on to this video in the near future, or make some kind of sequel to it haha. Thanks again!
Underrated in america, I presume. Because in Japan he’s a cultural icon and in Europe he’s been massive since the 70s.
This anime basically gives you the same joy as watching cartoons when you were still a kid
Yup. That's how i've always described it. It's also why i love Space Dandy...They are both well written, more mature orientated, superbly realised artistically and excellently animated FUN.
holy crap that's like the best way to describe it
I’ve only watched Castle of Cagliostro, but that is perfect
Lupin III was the original Persona 5. They had Arséne and Goemon in the same room before it was cool
Haha, good point, I'm thankful Persona 5 though pays tremendously well back to a show like this, really nice
@@SNKJay and yet Tome And Jerry is an Original of Lupin the 3rd.
Say by Monkey Punch himself.
Kinda surprised that they haven’t considered doing some sort of collab with ATLUS yet. 😅
Ewww Tom and Jerry is overrated and boring.
Soujirou is basically copy of Jigen, btw. Both in character design and voice. (the legendary VA for Jigen provided the Japanese voice for Soujirou)
This title: exist.
Italy: LIAR!
Yeah, in America it just isn't there. But in Italy, Japan -- hell the rest of Europe it's super big
@@SNKJay Ah i remember all the open theme songs, the "sigle", how Fujiko was changed to Margot and Arsene Lupin to Arsenic AKA Lupin(Yes that's how it was translated here) in the early seasons.
I live in Italy and everyone knows Lupin
In Italy Lupin is as big as the Simpsons. Lupin, the Simpsons and Dragonball made the same kind of numbers in terms of audience.
I worded my point incorrectly, but the one I tried (failed) to make was:
Unlike typical anime that have timelines like DBZ or Naruto, that have past villains/concepts that play a major role in understanding the fundamental story, Lupin doesn't require as much knowledge of the past.
Saw the CG movie and instantly fell in love with Lupin III, never knew about this anime
Don't tell the italians. You just break our hearts. But in the other hand, happy to see people finally discovered it
this is me right now.
@@SNKJay The new CGI feels like an introduction to the character, a way to catch a Western audience's attention. Your thoughts on Part 6?
@@Gigas0101 I've got a video coming up about Part 6, but I'm eager to watch it! Sherlock Holmes and Lupin together feels like such a fever dream, so cool! The CGI film was incredible, but I was missing out on the more darker qualities of Lupin's character. I suppose they made the CGI film with more mainstream appeal in mind, (and to be similar to Cagliostro) but it was a fine Lupin film to watch, definitely in the top 5 for me.
in italy this is a cult classic.
lol yep
Very true
Is Italy the home of the original Lupin? Of course it’d be popular there.
@@FelisTerras ahh thanks for the correction.
"Part 2 was less dark"
2 seconds into part 2: "l e a v e s l u p i n a d e t o n a t o r t o a n a t o m i c b o m b"
Hahaha, it's played for a comedic effect, but you're right that does sound pretty dark!
Definitely more popular in Italy though, like Urusei Yatsura; although we did get most of that show from 1988 to 1992, there has been no broadcast since 1998, and no French language release of any stuff besides the movies since 2003, whereas in Italy you can get Italian subbed Blu Rays!
sigarette alla Jigen!? Really!? How cool is that!? ^^
If I remember right part 3 actually released to Italy before it released to japan
When I saw The First I thought all of Lupin would be lighthearted like that so when I got to bloodspray it hit me really hard that Lupin was able to get that dark and honestly, I have a lot of respect to have a franchise that can branch out to multiple themes and tones like that.
the ENG Dub of the old series was literally just a bunch of friends having fun with the script, and it has so much charm i can't help but love it.
My introduction to the series was actually The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, and it is still one of my favourite anime to this day
Incredibly dark, but a wonderful introduction haha! It's my favorite, next to part 2, but I know it isn't a popular pick. Part 4 and 5 in their own right stand tall as well, the writers for this franchise are pretty good
Same ahah . Started watching from there. Really dark anime
The best spin off ever.
Where to start?
The answer: apparently anywhere
Yeah, Part 2 and Part 4 are your best places to start, but you could watch the woman called Fujiko Mine series too, or my personal fav, Castle of Cagliostro. Part 3 I wouldn't recommended starting with, just my opinion. Part 5 is connected to part 4, so for consistency sake (there's hardly much consistency within Lupin already as it is) it would make sense to see 4 before 5 in my eyes. Part 2 kinda gives you everything in one, but it's got older animation, so if you aren't for that, part 4 is your best bet. If you don't want to watch a tv show and just want to view the movies, Castle of Cagliostro gives you a full picture of everyone in action. imo
*Herlock Sholmes is the best thing I’ve heard in my life*
Lupin the 3rd: Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa was a masterpiece to me from the plot to the animation that movie was just something else for me
Oh yeah, even though it strays away from the usual image of Lupin, it's INSANELY GOOD. I didn't talk about that or Jigen's gravestone, or Fujiko's Lie. All quality films, but Blood Spray is easily finest and best animated one. The people from Red Line know their stuff!

Humor is ageless, specially when you go off the rails from curated humor and do the quasi-abridged work that was done on part 2
Thank you.
Ah thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Omg same!!
Obviously Lupin is loved in Italy, monkeypunch is literally an italiaboo
Lupin III. is just the anime version of James Bond.
A timeless set of characters that just works and doesn’t need continuity.
That’s the beauty of it
In Italy this is literally one of the most popular animes of the 90s
The movie had two dubs, from 1992 and 2000. Bob Bergen was in the 1992 dub, and David Hayter, aka Solid Snake, was in the 2000 dub.
The fujiko mine series + movies are so insanely good.
Yup! Couldn't agree more
Not only is the whole anime franchise underrated, but this video and your channel are underrated asf too!!
Lupin is an old friend of mine. Planning to cosplay him at some point.
Cagliostro Castle got me into LupinIII when I was like 10 yo... Now, 10 years has passed and I'm still in love with this franchise! Everything about Lupin just fascinates me, the music, the animation... And RIP monkey Punch...

That's great! Part 2 is awesome, and Part 4 and 5 have a slightly more mature overtone but are also fun adventures for the Lupin gang
The new movie has sparked my interest so this has helped me get started thank you 👌👍
Yeah no problem! Thanks for watching!
"Gem of the West" would be an awesome title for a Lupin movie.
I got here by scouring the internet with search terms like "So am I the only guy who loves Lupin III?" & "Is Lupin III amazing, am I the only one?"
My fav anime of all time and I love reading the comments below of ppl using your vid to learn how to dive even deeper into this kickass show.
I love lupin so much, mate.
probably around 6 years ago during a Miyazaki binge I watched Castle of Cagliostro and immediately fell in love with the characters and their dynamic, within a month Im sure i watched all the tv show episodes I could find as well as every lupin movie I could find (before mid 2000s)
I 100% recommend it to anybody, I'm not even a big fan of anime I just love good animation
Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, and Naruto were all I saw really,
Woah, those frames of Lupin descending down the inside of the castle... that's pretty dark, I didn't see that coming.
Till then- gotta fly!
the Lupin out of context videos are the best and most succinct encouragement to get into the show
Haha I like watching those too, they're so funny!
The Detective Conan Movie with Lupin The 3rd was my first exposure to the characters of Lupin and I absolutely loved them.
This led me to watching your video and now I'm going to start watching with Lupin The 3rd part 4 and then part 5.
Thanks alot for this great video
No problem! Glad to hear you found my video helpful! Have a great day
You should watch The Great Pretender!
And now, the Shonen genre has begun a rapid decline in quality because of one thing creators dread so much: Mass merchandising.
I seriously hope more niche shows pop up in popularity, I know Re Zero got big (but that's because of the whole isekai genre boom if anything)
"Well, some people don't know how great of a Master Thief I have become all over the years."
I got into Lupin the Third thanks to the Detective Conan (Case Closed) crossovers.
Same, such good crossovers ❤
I wanna watch those so bad, does anyone know where I can find them
@@yeseniatecaxco7545 They were on Hulu a few years ago and then there are the DVDs that you can find on amazon and ebay
"Underrated Gem of the West"
Boy. This anime in Italy is one of the most popular animes along with Dragon Ball Z for 90s kids. It's a gem we willingly keep in our hearts.
Man I've been looking for Lupin's show for like 3 weeks now! Thank you!
No problem! Glad you liked the video!
I gotta check this series out thoroughly, or just more, considering the lesson of the video.
Its all a blur, but I still remember cool, memorable sounding titles from episodes that aired on cartoon network:
"50 ways to leave your 50ft lover" - "Lair of the Land Shark" - "Buns, guns, and fun in the sun"
No one heard of Lupin the Third? I remember watching it years ago. For me it was the red jacket era of episodes. I still sing the theme to this day
That's great to hear!
I hope the cgi movie boosts the popularity in the states more
As a kid once stumble upon my uncle while he was watching Lupin III, the few scenes sparked my interest intermediately but never had the opportunity to see it after I started college, it was finding something I lost long ago,
Wow. That's amazing you found it again! I appreciate you sharing that here, that's awesome
EDIT: I made a more factually-correct and in-depth guide on Lupin the third here: ua-cam.com/video/o9M6lPiRrFg/v-deo.html
Check it out if you've got the time, and thanks again for stopping by here! Also, sorry for mispronouncing "Cagliostro", haha it should be "Caliostro" (if I'm not mistaken)
After careful consideration (aka, me driving for click-bait) and a number of comments that have correctly pointed out the flaw in my earlier title, I changed the title of my video. I'm surprised in America this show isn't as successful (by this show, I mean Parts 4 and 5, and the overall franchise) as things that have acted as successors of this show (Cowboy Bebop, Persona 5, etc)
I'm thankful a number of you have detailed I was wrong in click-baiting, and see now since there is more attention for the franchise, I should make another video.
Thanks!
This is a great video and I look forward to seeing more of your work!
Thank you! I appreciate the support!
This was a great nostalgia trip man. Thanks great vid
No prob! Thanks for stopping by, hope you have a great day!
i saw lupin in a sakuga video and it hooked me in. i thought this show wasn't underrated at first lol
It's a bit of an oddball, I still believe there's somethign worth checking out. It's just not as good as the other parts imo
@@SNKJay _Fever Dream: Lupin III_
Oh yeah, in Part 5! So hype, really shows he's a true marksman
Because the show seems to continue on, it actually inspires me to create original characters that would fit in their world.
Haha! That's awesome! I always felt that since the world wasn't defined with like a world map (prolly because it's very similar to our world) that held me back from doing the same, but from time to time again I think of cool escapades Lupin has and wonder what it would be like for other characters (made-up and in real life)
Thanks for this video, I saw lupin but never knew the hype but I'm definitely gonna start with part 2, thanks a million man
No problem! Have a great day!
As someone who just recently discovered this series through the new movie, thank you
No problem! I hope you have a great day, and if you have thoughts/questions on Lupin the third, you can ask here! The new movie seems to be helping my video out too, so I'm also quite pleased with it
I showed my mom the Castle of Cagliostro and not even half in she absolutely loved the way Lupin runs. We’re watched most of Lupin’s catalogue.
It seems Monkey punch really loved 007 as well as the original Mission impossible that he referenced some of the lines from those shows
Yep! I failed to mention Mr. Bond at all, in hindsight I realized I should've haha
The steelbook I bought, 100% worth it
this anime deserves more, I always wished that it got even more popular worldwide ;w;
btw, subscribed! Your channel is underrated, man-
Thank you! I agree, this anime deserves more, for all the hard work the producers pull together for this show, it's strange how it's not popular. Or popular enough for my standards at least :)
here's in Italy it's an evergreen show, very popular since '79. Not popular in USA doesn't mean not popular all over the world.
Plain and simple, that combined with the legal trouble never boded too well for Lupin, thankfully the entire world isn't just America (something I keep forgetting) and I'm grateful Italy and Japan like this show a lot
oh YEAH babeyyy time to watch part 2 (already seen cagliostro, LOVED it)
just got into Lupin recently and I’m ashamed and disappointed that I NEVER HEARD OF THIS SHOW BEFORE.
No problem! I'm thankful you stopped by! Have a great day!
I just got a bunch of lupin movies and some of the Tv seasons so thank you so much for this!
No problem! Thanks for the feedback!
I started watching part 4 last week, and I'm already addicted to this anime! Thank you so much!
No problem! Hope you have a great day!
No problem! Glad I could help!
im saw it last time 5 years ago when im was a kid and now becouse of some little clips tah tim rememebred im saw teh picture with tehm in car and now im happy again
Oh Man I love how Pops and Lupin get along.
Lupin’s stealth influence throughout the media was HUGE!
There are 2 other works that have “Lupin III” written all over them:
- “Final Fantasy IX”
- An 80’s anime called “Galactic Cyclone Braiger”.
