Leffe used to be my all time favourite beer. It was my first choice when I was feeling a bit flush, but last time I drank it, I decided never to buy it again. I assumed it was me that had changed, but now I realise its the Leffe that's gone down hill. Can't wait to try the aldi version. Thanks for the review.
Leffe hasn’t been ‘cork and cage’ bottled for ages. That was the first to go, followed by the drink itself. Thankfully the Brune wasn’t also butchered for the UK market, I won’t touch the Blonde mess anymore

I reckon a lot of people may be suspicious of the strangely named beers in Aldi and Lidl and veer away towards the usual British brewed stuff, Stella, Budweisser, St Miguel, et al. Yet as you say, this is brewed by the Palm Brewery in Belgium and they have an incredibly long history of brewing excellent beer. So this has to be good and yet another one to look out for on Aldi's shelves I do believe that it's maybe the British alcohol taxing system now which is why our beers, even from abroad, are getting weaker. Or maybe they think we will just sup anything that has a beer label on it and that may be true of a lot of people.
I’ve posted before on the subject of excise duty but here is the short version. Alcoholic drinks, including beer, have always been taxed based on their alcohol content, the previous UK tax regime for beer being £19.08 per alcohol % per hectolitre (last revised 13th March 2017). So the higher the ABV the higher the duty i.e the tax incentive to reduce ABV has always been there. It’s not a new thing ! The new rates effective since 1st August 2023 have introduced banding but the vast majority of beers fall within the 3.5-8.4 % band anyway, which was set at £21.01 per alcohol % per hectolitre (£19.08 if on draught, note this was the same as the old rate although I think the latest budget reduced the draught rate by a penny a pint ?). Blame the UK brewers not the Government.
I appreciate that they do, but why would anyone buy foreign sounding beers brewed in the UK. We have one if the strongest, most diverse beer cultures in the world - second only to Belgium IMHO. In my local area we have Three Tuns brewery, the oldest in the country, and Salopian; both of which are superb. The only reasons I can think of for drinking the beers you mention are marketing and a desire to get drunk when you don't actually like the taste of beer. As @stewy62 says, we've always operated a sliding scale of beer duty; it hasn't changed. There is no new reason for breweries to drop the ABV of their beers other than profiteering and, perhaps, as a sop to the idea of responsible drinking. Personally, I'd rather have three pints of something tasty than for of bland dishwater. And I know ethanol has no taste, but beers above 6% do tend to taste more.
What is sad. You talked about Stella. A local bar tried selling Stella Unfiltered- which I really enjoyed! They stopped because, Stella had such a bad reputation they couldn’t sell enough!
St Pierre is lovely, used to be stocked in Aldi a few years back in big bottles with a cork and like leffe was 6.6% from what I remember. So they've reduced the avb for the UK too but personally I feel like it tastes more like leffe used to 😂
@@nigelwatson2750 Would love to, but I'm a senior citizen in the UK, under the Government of Herr Starmer and not a millionaire, but I'm happy you still have the original Leffe....
"Leffe slowly zombifying itself into a lager..." Brilliantly put👍 Just seen that Aldi have some 750ml bottles of 6.5% ABV Leffe Brune Abbey Beer for £2.79 - although reported to be in short supply... But will now be looking out for the St Pierre next time I am there. Thx
I think the St Pierre is great and have been drinking it for a while now, Aldi always have a good selection of beers, love their coffee stout although they do make some mistakes for example their Hop Foundry Marshmallow Stout
The new UK version of Leffe Blonde is pretty inoffensive, but that's about it. Always preferred Leffe Brune, which I believe is still imported from Belgium, but it's not readily available. Will give the Aldi beer a shot. Cheers!
If you're looking for Brune, I can always get it in the large bottles in Morrisons. Imported 6.5% great beer. They also have the imported Blonde but it's the imported 6%, and its not worth it.
Great review Stu my only gripe is Aldi put beers like this on the shelf then a couple of months they just disappear, can't find this anywhere now, very frustrating, they did it with some of the Williams beers they had.😢cheers buddy.
I literally bought 2 bottles of Leffe on Saturday. I was so disappointed I drank half a bottle didn’t finish it. Lidl done a good copy but you can’t even find that now.
So happy you liked st pierre I think it's a little belter , totally agree with you over Leffe but it's still not too bad on draft , great video thanks Simon ❤
"Reassuringly expensive" was the Stella schtik back in the day. I remember it being the first beer/lager to set me back over a quid for a pint in pubs. Sigh. It was a great brew. 😢
Great review again Sim, Just to rub it in i have a Original 6.6% Leffe Blonde on chill ready for tonight on the PD as bought the last few from the shop as soon as they altered the ABV to 6%😅
At last the st pierre review, I've been buying this for a couple of months and really wanted your take on it. I think it's great and very drinkable...shocking what's happened to mainstream beers, basically if it's brewed in the UK then leave it alone if you ask me.
What are you on about? There are literally thousands of great British beers. Of course, none of them are made by InBev or advertised on TV. And I doubt it any of them are pilsner either.
What I find with Aldi is that they introduce a product eg the san marco Spanish lager, crunchy peanut butter and probably this life too. It’s all good until it has made market impact then they roll back on the quality. The san marco is not how it was a few weeks ago and the crunchy peanut butter is basicallysmooth and full of oil. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience?
St Pierre blond is NOT a ripp off. This brand is not exclusive brewed for Aldi. In the Netherlands and Belgium, St Pierre is sold in several supermarkets. St Pierre is a sub brand of Swinkels / Bavaria brewery. Palm is owned by the Swinkels family. You can compare this blond beer to Steenbrugge Blond.
"Discovered" the Aldi beer a few weeks ago and its gone right up their with one of my favourte to have in the house! I didn't even think it was a copy, to be honest, tastes quite different. Give me the option to choose either, and it would be the aldi version... bravo 👏
Review idea: What's the best "under 4%" beer, now that so many have dropped their ABV % below that line - We now have many others that are trying to compete in that category - such as Love Lane session IPA and Brewdog Cold Beer.... It's clearly a "category" now, even if it's wanted or not. So what is the best? Simon to decide please...!? Boom! Cheers!
St Pierre is a pleasure to drink. It's one of those beers you willing savour and happily hold back on until the time is right to enjoy it. I really like it. To agree with you, I was also was blown away with it's overall quality. It has a really pleasant depth to it's flavour, something the mainstream brands just cannot match. It's simply excellent.
The only 4 pint packs of lager in my local mini supermarket this morning were Tennent's or Stella Artois . I'm sipping on watery foul Stella and I'm not enjoying it. Wish I had a pack of those St Pierre. Enjoyed the video Si
I have both these in the cupboard, I’m gonna give the St Pierre another try. They used to sell it in bottles in Morrisons, I fell I love with it then. I do enjoy a pint of Leffe with a curry in Wetherspoons, but I guess that says it all
Most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between this St Pierre and Leffe. Leffe so expensive in UK so very good to find an alternative at an affordable price!!
I'm not sure it's fair to call St Pierre "an Aldi beer". I've had it in Sweden, and we don't even have Aldi (I bought it in our monopoly liquor store Systembolaget). St Pierre is brewed by Brouwerij Palm, so it's definitely a well established brewery.
As for St Pierre its been around atleast since 2021 and I have bought it here i Sweden, dont think its a Leffe clone but just another belgian blonde, and its not brewed for Aldi. Every beer dont aim at being a clone or a ripoff of another famous beer. Then every lager is a ripoff of Pilsner Urquell and I dont think we see it that way.
I really miss the Grolsch Vintage Beer Bottles with Swing Top. In the early to mid 1980s they were £1 a bottle at the local SOCIAL club in Reading. Heavily subsidized. Never worked properly after lunchtime after 4 Grolsches. Get the Leffe Bottles at your local Tesco. 12 small 330ML at 17 quids. Bargain.
Leffe is now a fake of itself! I thought it was me. It's my favourite beer and I knew something was off, and not just the strength. I had no idea about it being brewed here in the UK now. It's basically diluted now. I feel like I should have a little memorial service as I've lost a best friend! I actually tried Saint Pierre a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it but it was 2 quid a can so I've given it a miss since. I believe it's just dropped in price though I could be wrong. I till like Aldi's Reinbacher Wheat Beer though and it's £1.29 at the time writing for a 500ml bottle.
UK Leffe isn't the same anymore. The real stuff is still the same: 6.6%, in 500ml cans (under 2 euro), 33cl cans, 30cl bottles and so on. If I was from the UK, I'd stop buying the sheit versions produced in the UK.
Been picking up the St Pieer in Aldi for a while, it’s nice, but never made the Leffe connection till you flashed the stain glass window my mouth dropped open 😂🍺
Stella should be renamed Stella Light these days. If the duty goes up, raise the price accordingly and let people choose, don’t water down once decent beers!
Ive been saying this for years. Should have released a 4% 'light' Stella and kept the original at 5.2% to keep everyone happy. But then that didn't work with Becks, remember Becks Vier 4%, discontinued and then regular Becks dropped from 5% to 4% a year later. Also Budweiser had it's abv reduced twice even though there was Bud light available.
Leffe has never been cloudy! was the beer that got me into craft/belgian/german beers so will always have a soft spot for it. its cloyingly artificially sweet now, it used to be a much better beer! not tried they Aldi version, we dont have Aldi in NI. the Lidl version isnt very good though
I always enjoyed Leffe (Blonde and Brune), when Blonde went from 6.6 to 6.0 % I still enjoyed it although it wasn’t quite as good. I went for a while without drinking any and in the meantime got COVID for the first time a few months ago which has affected my taste buds. I’ve recently had three 500ml Leffe Blonde bottles and it was disappointing although I thought your 5/10 was a bit mean. I’m drinking my first can of St.Pierre as I ramble on, it’s definitely a nicer more interesting drink. I’ll have to buy a bottle of Leffe Brune which I don’t think has been changed for the UK to see if it tastes the same before I had COVID.
Replying to myself, currently drinking a bottle of Leffe Brune bought at Tesco. That’s better ! Brewed in Belgium 🇧🇪 like it should be. Hopefully Brune continues to be less popular than Blonde and that way they won’t be tempted to brew it in the UK for the UK market ! I won’t be drinking Blonde again unless I visit the Continent as the UK stuff has nothing going for it. Upon reflection, Simons 5/10 was probably right !
I always preffered the brune ( dark) though ain't had it in awhile, and for me, it did taste like a nice crisp lager, not like say hoegarden Which i don't mind but was never that mad on,always thoughf it was a bit cider ish, to my uncultured taste buds anyway, if I'd wanted cider, i would've bought cider, and probably a dry 1...anyway
The Aldi one is now better than the branded Leffe in the UK! I think Aldi still do thier Belgian beers in bottles with a cork as well, it gives a bit more of a sense of occasion at Christmas...Leffe has had a standard bottle top for about 10 years now!
I have just had some of the Aldi ST Pierre Blond and it was nothing like you described it. The BBD was mid 2025 so well within its time. There was no cloudyness at all and it tasted metalic, not a patch on the Leffe, sorry.
Aldi fake Leffe vs Leffe fake Leffe. Remember buying a pint of Leffe about 15yrs ago in a bar under London bridge, one of the most memorable beers I've ever drunk, great beer, great location, reasonable price (for London) great company. Drank it ever since until the supply dried up and it was replaced by the watered down version, that was me out. Replaced by Fullers London porter of all things......
I am currently drinking Aldi St Pierre and it is most definitely NOT cloudy. I agree it is certainly better than the 'new style' Leffe, but that is not saying much. Interestingly the Aldi I bought it from also had Leffe (6.0%) in both cans and 75cl bottles. But the Leffe was in the centre aisle, not the beer section.
Stella original is shite. The unfiltered version is very nice. Leffe Blonde and Brune were absolutely second to none but now, personally feeling, both are thinner in mouth-feel and lesser in flavours! I will look out for the Aldi versions from now on 🤩
Leffe used to be great, the same thing that happened to Jaipur and Punk IPA has happened to it too. Watered down, lower abv and dreadful. At Pierre is overly sweet and terrible too. Wouldn’t drink either of them.
The way I see it, they’re both fake but the Aldi beer is a much better fake than the UK Leffe. In Belgium - bars, shops and supermarkets - Leffe is just as it’s always been - gorgeous.
Leffe like other in Bev Budweiser products sold In Britain is brewed here because of the alcohol duties any beer over 5% gets hammered with tax so the worlds big 3 breweries brew everything in Blighty recently Japan Breweries owned Peroni went from 5.1% ABV to 5% but the price stayed the same the only decent beers sold in Britain today are either imported of Craft Breed
How do Lidl and Aldi get better quality beers, from small breweries, usually from the country of the style of beer, cheaper than these mass produced low quality beers, majority of which are brewed in the UK?
Everything in this country is being slowly castrated. Even beers
Punishment
Leffe is still 6.6% here in the land of beer, chocolate and chips 🇧🇪🇧🇪🇧🇪
....That's it rub it in 😂.....I'll have to get myself over in 25....

UK Leffe isn't the same anymore. The real stuff is still the same: 6.6%, in 500ml cans (under 2 euro), 33cl cans, 30cl bottles and so on. If I was from the UK, I'd stop buying the sheit versions produced in the UK.
Yep. Has this very artificial vanilla taste to me.
Only in Britain.
@@robv.8676 Good shout. I'm in Finland, and we still get the real thing sold in our supermarkets, at 6.6% ABV
I had Leffe 5 years ago and thought it was great. Sad to hear they ruined it.😢
Simon, please stop calling them ripoffs, they are clones and highly accurate ones at that.
i agree they are really what we want
Not accurate clones at all (aside from the label and name), these drinks normally taste totally different
Aldi should find or produce a 6.6% clone to one-up Leffe
The Leffe in the USA is still 6.6% abv and I’ve never seen it in cans.
Aldi used to sell the St Pierre in 750ml cork topped bottles a couple of years ago c£3 a bottle
@@William-Anderson Beck's in Finland is still 5%.
@@nigelwatson2750 It's still 5% everywhere but the UK. Same old story over here. It's happening with cider and wine too.
Leffe used to be superb. Now its sub-standard.
Do they do a fake leffee brun.? Cos brun is better than blonde
Nope brun is still the real deal on bottle and PD Keg which I have in machine now 👍😀
Kind of but not a regular in stock item. They do the cork and cage specials a couple times a year and they have some darker Belgian styled beers then.
Just poured an aldi fake leffe which i bought today and it was clear as a bell ? Seems they have changed already !
love that Palm beer ... drank it on tap in Bruges and Brussels... nice beer... will have to give that Aldi stuff a go
Love that St Pierre. My new go to beer.
We are deprived in the UK. I regularly go to Holland and in the supermarket's they sell a variety of leffe (at least 6)
But I doubt they sell Thornbridge or Salopian or Cloudwater.
The canned Leffe is brewed in the uk by AB InBev which is why it doesn’t taste like the Leffe of old 😒
Stick with the Alhambra 1925 reserva these days, 6,4% and packed with flavour.
8 out of 10
The same as you gave Black Sheep Blitzen Xmas beer.
Make it make sense!
There's no point rating anything if there's no consistency.
I’m in Belgium at the moment and the Leffe blonde is still 6.6%
I'm glad you've started calling them 'fake', but isn't it fairer to say 'UK fake' versus 'Aldi fake'?
Haven't seen cork and cage Leffe, for a few years. The new Leffe is OK at best, the Aldi rip off is one to miss for me.
Stella original is shite. The unfiltered version is very nice. Leffe Blonde and Brune were absolutely second to none but now, personally feeling, both are thinner in mouth-feel and lesser in flavours! I will look out for the Aldi versions from now on 🤩
Last I looked about Five months ago the only one that AB InBev hadn't fucked up was the Bruin.
"Reassuringly expensive" was the advert slogan. It's still expensive, but tastes crap now.
Leffe used to be great, the same thing that happened to Jaipur and Punk IPA has happened to it too. Watered down, lower abv and dreadful. At Pierre is overly sweet and terrible too. Wouldn’t drink either of them.
Abit off topic, is it True Banks's Mild is no longer? 😮
So the Leffe was cheaper than the 'cheap rip-off' Aldi beer?!
The way I see it, they’re both fake but the Aldi beer is a much better fake than the UK Leffe. In Belgium - bars, shops and supermarkets - Leffe is just as it’s always been - gorgeous.
Most the crap we drink locally comes from Burton with their iffy water - should have stuck to Bass
When are the live streams back mate?
Like hazy Belgium style beers dislike most hazy ipa's
Leffe like other in Bev Budweiser products sold In Britain is brewed here because of the alcohol duties any beer over 5% gets hammered with tax so the worlds big 3 breweries brew everything in Blighty recently Japan Breweries owned Peroni went from 5.1% ABV to 5% but the price stayed the same the only decent beers sold in Britain today are either imported of Craft Breed
How do Lidl and Aldi get better quality beers, from small breweries, usually from the country of the style of beer, cheaper than these mass produced low quality beers, majority of which are brewed in the UK?
