For anyone who thinks this was a real production - how come David Burton is the only person who's ever claimed to work on it? If they really did make a couple of episodes it will have needed a full production team - director, producer, camera, lights, sound, wardrobe, effects etc - and yet nobody else has ever admitted to having worked on it in any capacity whatsoever. Burton is literally the only person in the world who is saying that this project was for real. Draw your own conclusions...
David Burton is full of it. Richard Bignell researched this quite extensively and there's no evidence of this pilot being filmed. Director Paul Bernard supposedly initiated work on the pilot yet there is nothing in his work diaries from this time to indicate work on any independent Dr Who production and neither Paul's Widow or his long-standing PA had ever heard of him working on it either. The early Dr Who Magazine interview with Burton makes claim to have worked with "Millennium Productions" on the pilot, but company director Vijay Amarnani confirmed they never had anything to do with a Dr Who pilot. In one interview Burton claimed to have filmed in Vienna yet in another seems unaware of any foreign location filming. There's more on the Nothing at the End of the Lane website, if you still think this is anything more than an attention seeker telling tall tales give it a read.
There used to be a police box painted red in Glasgow’s merchant city but luckily someone saw sense and returned it to blue, no idea why it was red to begin worth. Mental!
I remember reading about this in Doctor Who magazine and being intrigued by the possibility of course back then I jumped at rumours of the show coming back as it seemed for many years it wouldn't. Judging by what we now know it probably was a hoax that got out of hand as no evidence exists that anything was actually filmed but if anyone has any evidence I would love to see it. Alternatively David Burton seems a nice guy so if any fan film makers have the urge to give us a glimpse of his version of the Doctor why not.
Interesting story. But surely other people involved in the production would have stepped forward by now to lend some weight to it, the twins Hart & Diamond, for example. But to be fair, if it was around the time of Paul Mcganns Doctor Who tv movie, its quite possible as the franchise was in limbo for a while I believe.
Well they might have to, I mean there r only so much British actors :P but I hope he plays a scientist for uni, oh & he took the doctors position a bit :P hahaha, that'd be great
@@thedoctor101fez Doctor Who doesn't have to feature all British actors, what if there's an American or Russian character, they're not always going to be played by a brit
I remember reading about him in the Doctor Who magazine! According to British newspaper "The Daily Star," Daniella Nardini filmed a pilot for a female fronted Doctor Who in the 1990's! It also once reported that Doctor Who veteran actor Michael Sheard (4 different stories across 26 years) had also filmed a pilot as the Doctor! (the things the tabloids will print!!) 🤔
+CupidStunt I agree that it's most likely all a lie. Why would they not name the production company? Just because they're independent doesn't mean they're nameless unless they don't exist. Plus his claims that everything was destroyed and how quickly everything was destroyed just makes it sound like an excuse for why there's no evidence what so ever that any of this had ever actually happened. There has to be some evidence between the Production crew and the rest of the cast that this actually happened but all he has is a car. And that car also has the name of the manufacturer on it. It's in big giant letters above the New Doctor Who. There's no production company but there was a car shop trying to drum up business with this fake story.
Reasons to indicate he could be lying: -Burton looks to the corner of his eyes which is a sign of lying -Burton repeats a few things after e.g. 'initial contract was for 3 months' which is a sign of lying -Literally no photographs or any evidence whatsoever other than his word Reasons to indicate he could not be lying: -It was a long time ago, so his memory could have faded -Why was it put on the official dr who channel on UA-cam? -Why was it put on a Dr Who DVD for the Third Doctor? -Why would he make this stuff up? -The evidence could have simply been destroyed I mean it would have had to be very secretive -There are photos of the car with 'the new doctor who' and people have had photographs with the man when they were told he was going to be the next one
Small footnote : looking to the corner of your eyes is only a sign of lying if you look to your right side. Left side is associated with recalling a memory, as does David Burton here. Besides, given the lapse of time since he first made that claim, any lie he could have told at the time became memory to him, and so could be recalled as a memory.
not just the 'weird stuff' , 'Doctor Who' got axed in 1989. Why would it come back 1 year, 5 months later, or even 2 years 6 months later, it was the right decision to bring it back in 1996 with Paul Mcgann as 'The Doctor' , but because it had aimed at 'American' audiences to bring the viewings up instead of being an British-American thing where it would be both aimed at audiences at either side of the globe, everything failed, common, Eric Roberts as 'the Master'. San-Francisco as the 'end of the world' on new-years eve 1999. Paul's audition was the setting where, we (the audience) find more about the ''Doctor's' past, including his age, 'The Master's' age, his father's age and so on
Considering the movie they ended up with in the end was also done largely externally I'd say that your probably right... clearly there wasn't a desire from the BBC to run this series at the time.
Is it weird that I think he's better looking now? I would love to see him in a episode perhaps as a relative of Clara. Maybe he had a clash with a past Doctor who and he has just found out by accident about her travelling with him and has a very, very bad idea of how to get back at him.
Hmmmn... that's really interesting. The idea of going for a more William Hartnell type Doctor again after Sylvester, would've been really interesting. It seems it's only now that they've cast Peter Capaldi in the part that they are thinking about having The Doctor as an older man like his first three incarnations and The Doctor of the classic Who movies.
An actor's credits are the projects that actually were completed. You don't list projects that were scrapped. (I recorded the voice for a taking doll of a famous cartoon character, but the project was cancelled, so it never made it onto my resume. Too bad, I'd planned to give one to each of my in-laws.)
No. If they were to do that, which they won't since the 50th was already filmed, they would cast David Bradley since he is William Hartnell in "An Adventure in Space and Time". Besides. Have you seen a David Bradley/William Hartnell comparison? It is astonishing!

It just shows you that they didn't know what the hell to do with the programme back then. They probably would have tried any thing! that's the terrifying thing. Maybe it's good that the show ended when it did , before they had the chance to damage it any further.
A weird old man with shoulder length white hair pushing two kids inside a phone box with blacked out windows.

Nothing against David Burton but I'm really glad the TARDIS wasn't turned into a phone booth.

Wouldn't that make it Inspector Spacetime?
It is a phone blue...
Reminds me of Bill and Ted.
I wish Paul mcgaan has a normal proper series as the doctor he would be great

I’m glad that David Burton can still get his Doctor Who recognition thanks to this interview.

Jai Parker This should be the top comment, it’s one of the few with an actual educated response.
Pretty sure the BBC and Doctor Who wouldn't post this if there wasn't some truth to it.
David Burton as The Doctor...I could see that actually working.
Someone tell him he's probably canon now.
Thank god they never used the red boxes. Inspector Spacetime almost got copyrighted maybe 0.0

The Tardis as a red phone box!!?? Fetch the smelling salts, Marcel!
Would be interesting to have him in a future episode, they may even accept him as a future doctor.
Plus, it read as "Doctor Who" in the closing credits in the revived series until David Tennent requested it to be read as "The Doctor"
I have been looking for this video for YEARS! I thought I'd dreamt it!
The back roads of Doctor Who hold such treasures. What a nut.
There's an extended version of the interview on the DVD if you know where to look...
what dvd
Without hope, without witness, without reward...
That picture of him with the kids in swimsuits is kinda creepy
His name on the credits was "Doctor Who / Dr Who" for almost 20 years. You might want to re-think your comment.

David Burton looks like he's dressed in Capaldi's costume in that interview... Spoilers!
How is that a spoiler?
Stephen Murphy He has his best suit and a hair cut
Only shows how boring and unoriginal Capaldi's "costume" really is...
This man is completely off his rocker!
There is a slight resemblance to William Hartnell (the first Doctor). I would love to see this.
Possibly a Doctor in an alternate timeline? I'm sure they could find a way to have him as The Doctor.
say, its been years...bring him back and make him the actual Doctor. it will be a fun fact, and moment when a backfired idea had some ashes rising
Most people i know, know of doctor who, in all time periods, they especially love me. And they also love me the most for the next 50 years
Perhaps he could have played the "secret Doctor" if John Hurt didn't do it.
I think it would be great if they found the lost 90's pilot or reshot it and showed it as a speical
This is on the Inferno Special Edition DVD
I'd love to see this guys footage if its outbthere

Is that Alexi Sayle in the Lock Up Your Daughters cast photo?
Hearing this story, it seems very likely that Burton would be playing a Doctor that was very similair to Peter Cushing.
He seemed like he would have been a good Doctor.
I have a feeling that this is the only "Eighth Doctor" video I will be able to see this month.
Looks like a doctor
The fact he lied about everything to get a free car 💀
Dammit I hate hearing things were wiped or destroyed! GRRRR, one thing I HATE about tape and filming back the .
well not as bad as most of the 60s storys's
Late reply but David's story is sketchy, I'd recommend taking a read of www.endofthelane.co.uk/burton.html at some point if you havent already
I agree. He reminds me a lot of him.
Watch the whole video.
He was credited as Doctor Who up until about 2006/07. Please get things right.
He used to be Dr Who in the end credits.
0:35 that cut jesus christ 😂
Checks to see if this was uploaded on the 1st of April.
stop complaining.
For 18 years they called him Doctor Who in the closing credits. Do your Who-History.
Reasons to indicate he could be lying:
-Burton looks to the corner of his eyes which is a sign of lying
-Burton repeats a few things after e.g. 'initial contract was for 3 months' which is a sign of lying

***** It's related to Doctor Who and it was big news at the time, so there's that.
At least give him a guest spot in a future episode.
