"Calling the War Council of Gallifrey! This is the Doctor!"
That's a wonderful reintroduction to the long dead William Hartnell. He was actually the only Classic Doctor who was given a new line. This episode treats him with such reverence that he seems like a legendary figure and the man they got to record that line sounded exactly like him.
They also perfectly infused previous lines into the scene. After Hartnell showed up, the rest of the Doctor's lines until Matt Smith's grim "Okay" was all archive footage. However, it was chosen carefully so that it sounded like each Doctor was contributing to the rescue mission whilst giving each other encouragement and confirming calculations in the process.

Personally, I love Capaldi but I don't like that much this decision of 'time travel trick' in this episode 'cause if you watched it before 'Time of the Doctor' (which is my case and, I think, the case of everyone else), the entire episode 'Time of the Doctor' get spoiled because you don't have this fear that the Doctor really dies since you already saw his following incarnation, as River would say : 'hush now, Spoilers', and I kinda they'd follow this advice instead of spoiling what could've been a great moment of uncertainty

The theory is helped by the fact that in that episode, the TARDIS is seemingly destroyed by the Dalek's weapon and the next time we see it, it materialises on the Dalek Emperor's ship next to Rose.

It's a cheap trick. Davies destroyed Gallifrey to make the concept of the Time Lords and Gallifrey much easier to follow for new fans, it also allowed a new dimension of the Doctor to explored and added an incredibly interesting and unique part of the lore, aka the Time War, to be introduced. This made it even more impactful when The Master returned in series 3 and finally when Gallifrey and the Time Lorfs returned as a concept at the end of Davies era. Chibnall is a hack. He destroyed Gallifrey essentially to push the Doctor in the same narrative arc when we've already seen it done much more competently and with far higher stakes.

Actually the clip of 9 used here (and later when they show John Hurt's face subtly morphing into Christopher Eccleston's when he regenerates) really makes me tear up. Knowing about how Chris was going through mental health struggles during his time on the show, it's understandable why he ultimately didn't decide to come back for this episode but my heart was still happy to see him represented onscreen like this.

(And look how Chris behaves around him in the role. Nothing but sarcasm.) They *were* in talks with Eccleston about coming back. Nice theory, but there's a small, glaring hole in it. You see, Smith's Doctor was the final Doctor, the 12th of the cycle when you add the War Doctor. He had also wasted a regeneration, resulting in the Meta-Crisis Doctor, which meant that while usually, the 13th incarnation is the last incarnation, for him, the 12th was the last. All of this you pointed towards in your comment. However, one thing you missed is that the Time Lords did NOT know about the Meta-Crisis. They counted all the Doctors, and the conclusion they would have reached would be that Smith's Doctor was the penultimate one. Therefore, the Time Lords giving the Doctor a new cycle did not become a fixed point.
It is also not a fixed point because if it was, we could never have seen the Doctor's grave on Trenzalore, since that was an alternate future in which he did not get a new cycle. If a new cycle had been a fixed point, that alternate future could not exist

I think its a bit of both. They couldnt stand the Doctor before. Just look at how the General saw him. But after saving Gallifrey, that had to have gotten Doctor a bit of gratitude from them. They gave up their only way of returning to the normal universe (the time/space crack) to give the Doctor another round on the regeneration clock so to speak. But at the same time, they shouldnt have known about Capaldi's Doctor at the time so they might have hoped that giving him another regeneration cycle would allow him to come back to Gallifrey

This scene makes me think the Time Lords didn't give the Doctor a new set of regenerations in the Time of the Doctor out of kindness, but rather out of necessity. If the Doctor would've died on Trenzalore like he was supposed to, his 13th incarnation wouldn't have been able to help saving Gallifrey. The Time Lords may be able to fix paradoxes from time to time, but maybe not one as big as to influence their own existence.

@@MaskedMan66 Errr... Sorry dude, you're wrong. Russell T. Davies said that it didn't count as a full regeneration in interview at the time, but Moffat later retconned it so it did. Matt Smith was on his final life. He would have had two incarnations left, but the War Doctor & Tennant's vanity regeneration meant that there were no more left (12 regenerations = 13 incarnations). He was then given a new regeneration cycle & became Capaldi.

      CLARA:
"Okay, so you're number eleven, so..."
      DOCTOR:
"Ha! Are we forgetting Captain Grumpy, eh? I didn't call myself the Doctor during the Time War, but it was still a regeneration."
      CLARA:
      "Okay, so you're number twelve."
      DOCTOR:
"Well, number ten once regenerated and kept the same face. I had vanity issues at the time. Twelve regenerations, Clara. I can't ever do it again. This is where I end up. This face, this version of me."

Moffat has written some of the best episodes of Doctor Who since the new series started, and his first series as showrunner (5) is arguably the best season. The specific problem I have with his writing for 12 and Clara is that in order to make her look smart, he frequently makes the Doctor look stupid. In Day of the Doctor, three Doctors combined are so stupid that they are planning to commit mass genocide against their own people until Clara tells them "no, you're better than this", and only then do they decide to think harder and come up with a different plan. That's character breakingly stupid no matter who the writer is.

This is the first time we see a doctor introduced BEFORE their debut. It's a fun fact to think that Capaldi's Doctor is the one that solved the Gallifrey problem and not the Eleventh.

War completely loses his memory of saving Galifrey when turning into 9, if I understood correctly? Which is a bit tragic, actually. Temporarily ...

Overall, the freeze just gives the scene more dramatic tension and gives him some nice characterisation (something you want to be doing in every moment of a screenplay). I really hope that wasn't a serious critisism, because I have seen far too many people get mad when a character doesn't do everything perfectly even though without moments like this the story would be much less effective. There are actual elements to critisise in this, so if you really want to do that then take a few scripwriting classes so that you have some understanding of what you're talking about.

    41: All 42!!!!
General and a few other time lords: *faint*
    Three hours later...
64th Doctor: Hi guys! Sorry I’m late, i-. Oh.
831st Doctor: Oh! Hi! When did Washington become president again? I was supposed to meet him that day.
9,000th Doctor: Just go to the American civil war and walk in front of British troops and say, “All hail America!”
831st Doctor: And just why would I do that?!
    832nd Doctor: Well, you see,
    70th Doctor: Oh jeez....

Capaldi was there. Bootstrap paradox. If they needed an extra doctor to freeze the planet, then the doctor could of never gotten more regenerations in the first place. Of course, Matt's doctor would not of been able to remember Capaldi's doctor being there, due to those parts being time locked.

Yep, But he would remember saving the planet. And that is really ALL of the Doctor's incarnations.

T-ZER0 Capaldi would of been the first doctor not time locked to those events, so he is the first to remember, which gets back to Moffat's theme.
10 was the doctor who regrets.
11 was the doctor who forgets.
12 was the doctor who remembers. Kind of ironic how the last season ended, but at the same time, was it ironic, or is the doctor just a damn good liar?
