The amount of talent that went through Montreal from 75 to 95 is incredible. Finances, and a strike, were the only thing that prevented the Expos from multiple titles.
I remember this Expos playoff year like it was yesterday. The city was electric. It was 3 years in the making to finally shine on the world stage…. One swing away from the World Series! The next year the Expos added Tim Raines to the lineup. We were the “team to follow”. The Expos hosted the all star game this year and had a bunch of Expos… Gary Carter was the game MVP. Alas ownership couldn’t hold on to the big salaries and Mr. Carter took a deal to go to the Mets … and we became the club of upstart players. But 1981 was the Expos’ year of pride! Thanks for loading this !!! It brings back great childhood memories !
I remember watching this game on T.V. I loved the expos uniform back in the day I grew up in Cincinnati all I ever experienced as a kid was championship baseball.
Still the only postseason series won by the Expos/Nationals franchise. The Phillies were the only first half division winners to lose their 1981 Division Series.
@norr4636: It was in 1981, when a strike essentially split the season in 2. The divisions all had 1st-half and 2nd-half champions, who played off in best-of-5 Division Series. They mention it several times in the broadcast. You must know the Expos and Phillies both played in the NL East.
Full stadiums, crowds watching games not on their cell phones, game times not adjusted for TV ratings and advertisers, no political messaging. We will never see moments like this in sports again, so sad.
Montreal gave away all their talent. They just couldnt get it done. They had to get to the postseason and win to get the fans to be crazy oer them. They never really did that. They should have another chance soon.
@@LogicMind99even though it was in Washington, 2019 was the single most kathartic postseason by one team I've ever seen. So many dragons were slayed by the Expos/Nationals
I remember this series, I predicted a Montreal-Oakland World Series in 81, It turned out to be Yankees-Dodgers, I was always an Expos fan and I follow the Nationals today.
Just listen to these announcers then listen to a Phillie's broadcast. Not even the same planet. Vin Scully the absolute best. He called the game and gave you interesting facts.
that was my team back in the 70's and 80's growing up as a kid in Boston, used to wear all my phillies stuff that mom would order from their team shop, was not to popular. but i loved their uniforms and pissing of red sox fans at the same time
bubba gump it looked more like he was pointing at the second baseman and shortstop. when a base runner at second does that, he is telling you ( the infielders) that he knows where you are. he doesn’t want to get picked off.
Terrence Clay The reason why just speculation and my guess at the time was NBC decided to go with Enberg and Seaver on the LCS due to Enberg was more exposed to the network than Harmon and Seaver was an up and coming analyst although still an active player as a promising future analyst( to over for Garagiola in 1989 as top analyst with Scully). Another factor was NBC was going to make a change in their baseball announcing roster for the upcoming 1982 season which by some reports that Enberg was going to be # 1 baseball play by play but NBC was in negotiations with Vin Scully and the top play by play went to Scully. Garagiola moved to analyst, Kubek moved down to the # 2 team which Bob Costas became #2 play by play and a regular on Game of the Week. Lots of change happened that year in character olving announcers such as Scully, who that year was at CBS at the time calling NFL # 2 behind Pat Summerall unhappy there due to not being selected to call the Super Bowl that year for CBS also factored in the NBC baseball announcer changes which led to Scully leaving CBS for NBC. Scully did golf also for NBC like he did at CBS but did not do the NFL for NBC. I wish he did call some NFL games. But he had a full regular slate of baseball at NBC plus he was still calling Dodger games at his request may have factored into that one.
Phillies uniforms were the best ever, this powder blue and burgandy looks great even today when they wear the throwbacks. Check out these OH BTW the coolest moment in the regular season 2019! 5-1 come fr behind walk off grand slam bot 9, And those Uni's! ua-cam.com/video/NWUue0FI_qs/v-deo.html
attendance about 35k not bad for a cool, rainy Wednesday afternoon in October when many people have to work. 35k would sell out some of todays ballparks. No doubt any WS held in Montreal woulda sold out.
james longsworth there was a strike in 1981 and MLB changed the playoff format to guard against schedule inequities. Each division had a first and second “winner”. The winner of that series played the other series winner in the League Championship Series

Expos Uniforms here were nice ! They should bring back the Expos!
They will baseball shouldn’t have left Montreal!!
Looks like we're getting the Ex-Rays
I remember watching this game on T.V. I loved the expos uniform back in the day I grew up in Cincinnati all I ever experienced as a kid was championship baseball.
@M soccer is so effin boring dude...
Enberg had issues say speier. 😮😊
The commercials are indicative of a simpler time. They’re swell
Who says Montreal didn't care about baseball??
Sean McLaughlin The fact they haven’t had a team in 15 years says it all
The first-ever MLB postseason game in Canada!
Still the only postseason series won by the Expos/Nationals franchise. The Phillies were the only first half division winners to lose their 1981 Division Series.
1981 NLDS? You mean the NLCS. The Division Series wasn’t in play until 1995.

What happened to the first inning and a half? You have the pre-game interviews...
Someone must have recorded over it...
This was Montreal's revenge for 1980
And 38 years later, Montreal still has to contend with the curse of baseball strikes on their success 1981 & 1994
Montreal gave away all their talent. They just couldnt get it done. They had to get to the postseason and win to get the fans to be crazy oer them. They never really did that. They should have another chance soon.
But the Phillies won the WS , Expos - Zilch, But I do miss the Expos and their Uniforms

J'aime la couleur des Phillies dans ce temps-là.
WPTZ! My home station! Fun fact, the WPTZ call letters use to belong to KYW-TV....in Philadelphia.
In the 4th inning it certainly looks like Moreland, who is at second base, is tipping off Carleton as to the pitches Rogers is about to throw.

Expos Toujours!
If the Big "O" would have had it's roof it could have helped the Expos with no rain outs and a controlled inside environment.

Dick Enberg & Tom Seaver on NBC.
To bad, at the time NBC did not assign their then back up announcing team Merle Harmon and Ron Luciano but Dick and Tom were great.
I wonder why NBC used Dick Enberg and Tom Seaver (who was still an active player in 1981) instead of Merle Harmon and Ron Luciano.

Dick Enberg was NBC. He was one of the greats RIP.

For you Expo-necrophiliacs, the average temp in Mtl. in October ranges from 54-43 degrees. Not optimum weather for 'championship' baseball.
Seaver's Reds had the best record in baseball in 1981 - but stayed home because of the split season.
Jack Thompson bowie Kuhn fucked the reds as usual.
i am sure it has happened a few times in the minors. there are leagues who play split seasons.
Expos!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gee whizz
piss poor crowd
