Probably 1978, Jaco is playing with Herbie Hancock in a college auditorium. Power goes out. Herbie is dead in the water with his three keyboards. While they are trying to figure what went wrong Jaco entertains the crowd with unplugged electric bass for 20 minutes. Our minds were blown and it was incredible. His fingers were bleeding because he played so loud. A true legend.
As I'm a bassist that sounds incredible. Jaco was king but you got to see Herbie Hancock. That guy's one of my favorites. Good thing he did not have an acoustic piano?
Being able to play those difficult lines as loudly as he is, is insane! The way he always has that raspy sound from plucking so strongly has influenced my playing so much
@@jackinthewoodsii8653idk man maybe he just prefers playing a fretted bass than a fretless. He’s just having a jam, it’s not like he’s in a jaco tribute band or something lol
I heard an interview with Flea years ago where he said that Anthony Kiedis was walking through a park in New York in the mid-eighties, and Jaco was playing 'Louie Louie', busking for change.
What is so crazy is Jaco and Joe Zawinul played this much faster in their live shows! I have to say though, Flea has his own unique sound which is something every bass player strives for.
yea everybody talks about jaco but not many people talk a bout joe doubling the bass perfectly in his left hand while playing chords in the other hand. zawinful was a beast
Every time I hear Flea play I just want to practice for the rest of forever trying to get that same level. Jaco too, but I personally like Flea’s punk funk style better
Gonna admit as a lifetime bassist who follows bassists like Jeff Berlin, Stanley Clark, Henrik Linder, etc., I never really could "get" Jaco's stuff granted I can objectively see that he is a genius. Just not my jam I guess.

I love Flea and RHCP’s!! But the beauty of the way Jaco played it was his placement of the notes and feel was like no other. No one ever plays it quite like Jaco did!! He just laid back a millisecond on notes and had his unique feel. Probably the best ever even though there is a long list of my favorite bass players.
Teen Town from Weather Report's - Heavy Weather Album. Likely my favorite Jazz album, favorite song, "A Remark You Made". Try it, it'll cure what ails ya. God Bless
Flea is a legend, no doubt. He was able to play that loud even though the bass wasn't even plugged. Not sure, but I think I saw him being a little sloppy in some parts of the riffs, though it might just be me, so....anyways, great performance from one of the world's legendary bass players! Big thanks for uploading! ❤ Greetings from Las Palmas, GC 💜💕💜😅
I love the sound of new bass strings. I have a buddy's bass at my place with its original strings. Thing has never been cleaned. Although I'm tempted to polish it up and put new strings on it, lol, I told him I'd keep it nice and dirty, grimey and thumpy for him like he asked.
Yep 👍🏽 Flea is so crazy good, he can easily playing what he wants to play here: some J. Pastorius for example! I like to listen to Marcus Miller so big hugs a Todos ! 🥸😊💜
At first i was like, "ah yes, Teen Town, I enjoy playing that little ditty from time to time." But then realized he is DIGGING into the bass at the same speed. Guy's a monster.
@@blujay9191 Yep. Gary Thane was another great one from that era. He was the bass player for Uriah Heep who met a tragic end from his heroin addiction. IMO he was that one missing piece that took them next level. Listen to his bass lines on songs like the Magicians Birthday and you'll see what I mean.
Yes. To be honest it’s not that hard. But to play at the tempo that Jaco played it live, you would want to back off a little to give your fingers the headroom for dynamics, and for more subtlety in the groove. Think of a pianist trying to play every note of a uptempo jazz solo at fortississimo, (triple forte).
Jaco and Flea are my favorite bassists ever!!
💙😁
Claypool is something else to though.
How can you compare a genuine player with a wannabe bassist? Pastorius wrote the book on how to play bass and Flea can't read.
I'm going with Davie. He' definitely better than Flea.

What college? They must’ve had an amazing room to project like that (not taking ANYthing from Jaco’s presence).
You've got some real talent there, mate. I hope your career takes off and you can afford an amp one day.
Lol!

And a shirt
😂😂😂 Love it
😂😂
The fact he’s getting that loud NOT plugged in AND playing over the bridge pickup! Holy shit!
I just noticed that those fingers are made of steel
Yeah playing that fast with that much force ain't easy.
Great call out, thunder fingers 2
Yeah still want the same tension but i too was amazed over how well he played this unplugged!

I attended a gig of Red Hot Chili Peppers last summer. And Flea skills impressed me the most. Incredible bass player!
I aspire to be a quarter of the musician this guy is!!! Flea, you rock brother
Jaco. Way ahead of his time. Flea. One of the best of our time.
Wow! It just shows that Flea is still the master of his instrument! The boys in RHCP are still as great as they were many many years ago!
