Im a beginner drummer, just starting out. I was starting to feel hopeless because it feels so overwhelming trying to distinguish what is being played and when. And then forget trying to actually play along. This video is incredibly helpful. Thanks much for this!
Right there with you. Just started in late May. I can't always distinguish like an open hihat from an ostinato on a crash if it's mixed in pretty deep. Or a floor tom from the bass. At least in rock and pop though, the more you listen and pay attention, I think the patterns played as well as the general feel of that particular part of the song can help you kind of deduce that.
@@fastfiddler1625 i totally feel the floor tom and bass. What really gets me is when they do floor tom AND bass lol. I think youre right tho. Just like anything else, it just takes a ton of practice. Cant expect to be pro right away. We got this.
This lesson is pure Gold. I've been playing guitar since the age of 15. I'm 53 now. I try to convey the same ideas to our Drummer. I think I will share this video with him. I also use these ideas myself when learning new songs. Also for Songwriting, and Song Arrangements. Greatly appreciate your channel.
When I heard the fill in the first couple seconds of the vid, I sang in my head: “I don’t trust myself loving you.” Neat intro, Stephen! Great lesson! Thanks a bunch.
Love your content, man! It's a great idea to really focus on one part at a time, almost like meditation and mindfulness. It's easy to get mixed up and go, ooooooh but the bass is doing this now! But please, mix these videos louder. I frequently get blasted in the ears when I move onto anything else.
thank for this video bro! I am trying to focus on what you saying, but i keep getting distracted with your jaw bwahahaha shave it bro! tnx for this video your awesome.
This is all fine but it depends on the difficulty of the song, if you don’t have the skills to play that song you can listen all you want. I don’t think you’re gonna listen to any Weckl tune 6 times and be able to play it.
Excellent lesson Stephen! Thanks very much. As part of listening do you also write down the number of measures in each section of the song? Also, what about a song with more complex drum parts. Do you try to play note for note with what the drummer is playing? Do you do this without the drum sheet music or do you try to just get close to what the drummer is playing? I know a lot of questions here. Thanks again. Bill.

Dude, you work and live out of audio... please masterize properly your videos, I see as a big fail that the audio is so low.
Just use a volume booster extension or a DAC
@@thermonuclearpants553 that's not a problem, I have a nice audio interface. The problem is that he is careless with his audio.
