Great breakdown of the count. A lot of videos go through it too quick and don’t really help you with the count and what to emphasize, best video I’ve found in the mambo.
Man I am so happy I ran across your vids. I have always been a rock drummer but just hooked up with a reggae and Latin ska band. You lessons have been helping me learn a lot of what I have been missing with this new band... Thanks Man Your work is appreciated.
Yah brother...I have already previewed most of the Latin lessons you posted. Including a few others just for inspiration. Just a suggestion for a lesson might be some reggae if you haven't already... I didn't even know what a one drop was before getting with this new band. That's part of what got me going on my new drum study habits. Thanks again because your lessons gave me a lot to think about.
Stephen: Never mind, I figured it out. I printed out a PDF with the Cascara pattern. A little difficult to stay persistent with the pattern but that comes with practice.
really nice lesson, only suggestion would be some sort of sheet music to take away to my kit because i feel like i've learned it after watching the lesson, but as soon as i sit down on the stool it's gone!
man those drums sound sooooooooo good. That has to be the best rack tom tone ever.[all the drums sound grear tho] Nice feel to this mambo,I've been dabbling with Latin styles for years and they are a challenge for sure. Keep up the inspiring playing/posts I'm a steady customer, lol !!!
Hi Stephen - thanks so much for the lesson, it is brilliant as always! I noticed you are playing with your left hand stick turn round - how often do you do this and why? I used to play with the stick turned round like that, mimicking Mike Portnoy, but have stopped doing it though it does get more pop out of the snare. I felt I had less feel and control, though maybe I was just tripping....
Dude, this video is great, and so are your other videos :))) I have been interested in Afro Cuban style, because it has a totally different feel from Samba - and yeah, I like latin styles because they make our brain dance hahaha Is it possible for you to give a little bit introduction to Afro Cuban? Especially to get the independence of that right foot. thanks heaps man. :))
Just a small observation. I would like it, when explaining the right hand if you played the pattern one time without counting. I was stuck listening to your voice and waited till the end to hear how it actually sounds like(where it's sped up) Other than that great lesson. I really like the groove man
There's no clave pattern here: quarters on the left foot, half notes on the right foot, 2 4 & on the left hand, cascara on the right hand. You could easily add a clave, 3-2, 2-3, son, rumba, if you wanted to, though.
You're right...no clave being played. There is, however, an underlying clave pattern with any mambo. It's what the song would be based around. In this case, 3-2 son. To make it a 2-3 son, you would need to reverse the measures (play the second measure first).
Contact me...thats how !.... i can write it on paper and send it to you...if you read music....or break it down on a graph....do you read drum music Paulo......
Hi Stephen: I Mike and I am a member/student of your website. I really enjoy watching your lessons.ID - buubareda I am a major rookie and just learning how to play at my ripe age if 43. One big favor: Can you please count/write two measures of the bell pattern. I think I've been playing a different Cascara. Unfortunately I am not able to interpret it on your PDF. Is it 1 2 3& &/1 2 3& &1. Sorry about wasting your time on such nonsense. - Mike

thanks heaps man. :))
Sheet music on the screen would be really helpful.
Hey Stephen, thanks for the video it was very helpful. Can you explain the last fill you did towards the end of the video?
Glad it helped Dylan! Can you give me a time stamp in the lesson to reference that fill?
Stephen Taylor Yes, right at 6:14
That was a really good mouth conga
That's what she said
"latin styles [...] make our brain dance"
Well put!

correction: Ok,, you didnt have the stick turned around :P But whats your take on that?
TheSentinel909 ya
what makes this a mambo?its just a cascara pattern?the cascara would not be the main right hand rhythm played in mambo.
Mer Sea Merci de France
your a north american drummer?
Yes, I live in North America
I think I've got the bass drum in the wrong place.
I've got the hands all going, and the left hi hat. That bass drum throws me off...
I searched Mumbo Jumbo and got this...
