True, especially live Verrett's voice was not as free as on other occasions, but I would like to emphasise, at the end of the opera, that beautiful 'Tiens' when she throws away the ring, sung and not shouted, the look of pity towards Don José, the idea of Domingo almost collecting Carmen's life in a last kiss, and many other things. This to me was great theatre, without the need for complicated and philosphical Konzepte
Konzepte...you mean like Garanca in an all white lycra jeans and jacket outfit getting her throat slashed with a broken bottle? Yeah I'm with you. I wanna see Carmen, noit a concept. This production is Carmen.

I like Verrett as Carmen much more than as Dalilia in Samson. And Raimondi is great as Escamillo. And Domingo... that staggeringly beautiful voice. It is mesmerizing to hear Verrett sing "En Vain" literally almost 30 years past the RAI telecast (1967 vs 1984). She really never lost much except for the insidious high chesting but that is always a dramatic choice as well. Just listen to that musicality! It's very rare today
No one can sing the La fleur aria better than Domingo. He just turned 78 yesterday. It's hard to believe, the years have flown by. The greatest opera artist of all time many experts and many more have ruled and I have to say, I think they're right. Paz y salud.
Hi do u have Carmen with Elna zaremben & placido ? Also Carmen with Denise graves & Domingo I would pay u to put on DVD if have & can't post a lot health problems would cheer me up let me know either way been searching thank u for posting this one awesome never saw thank y

The costumes, hairstyle are not very flattering for the gyspies including Carmen. Verrett was in bad shape at this particuliar time, and it was not a good choice to sing that part at that moment. She has inner suttle nuances but the voice doesn't follow easily what she wants. Domingo's singing is beautiful, but the connexion between them is not really obvious, the staging doesn't show us a poor dominated man, but a handsome "chevalier", and he sings it to fit La Scala's size...
Verret's voice had moved up in the years before this - the role of Carmen just lay uncomfortable low for her in a time when she was singing soprano roles. As Verrett got older she developed a hole in her voice around the break from chest voice. That is why a lowish role like Carmen was a bad choice
@@Yves_Ka I know all this, she always had sort of a frail low medium ( listen to her Judith even in 75) and going back and forth between sopranos and mezzos was not always good. Having had a hysterectomy in 85, she recovered with an easier voice.
