Family Fall color trips, Harley rides.. backpacking in the Blue Range. run the Devils Highway 666, Coronado Trail all my life. Summer of 2018, took my new Corvette Z06. Highest Posted Speed limit from Alpine south, is 25mph. I averaged 47. ; )
Glad to see that 191 is back open again. It was closed for a long time due to a bridge being out if memory serves. It could have been a result of that fire but I’ve lost track of the details. You’ve nudged me to consider getting back up there this summer. Thanks for the ride.
Thank you for showing that. I've driven past it on a trip down from Alpine and I've seen it from the air on a couple of flights that went through phoenix. Amazing!
Around here we pronounce it Mac More Ann...... This is a huge contrast to the area I'm presently in ..... all mining and drilling here is underground such as our salt mines and the oil and gas industry exploration Another great video Randy
Hi T-Bone, There's lots of beautiful scenery on that loop. Western New Mexico is really nice this time of year. I hope to make a trip in that area soon. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!
I drove that road a few years ago. From northwest Colorado to Willcox Arizona. On 191 from I-70 in Utah. Its beautiful country with awe inspiring vistas the entire way. Coming out of the mountains and entering the mine in twilight was a surreal experience I'll never forget. Pictures and video don't do it justice for sure, it needs to be explored in person. Learning the history of the roads namesake expanded the experience.
Wow, interesting tidbit about the Wallow Wildfire. Up until today, I always thought the convergence of the Rodeo-Chediski Wildfire was always the largest in our state’s history. Great trip! Thx for taking us along for the adventure! 🤙🏼
@@SeabeeTraveler Yeah shout out to our firefighters and fire lookout tower crews too! ❤️🔥🤘🏼🙌🏼 Morenci looks absolutely jaw-dropping. Mankind: we literally move mountains.
I worked for freeport as a journeyman Boilermaker in the merger time frame. I worked in HAULAGE in the open pit,on those Haul Trucks and the rest of the fleet of equiptment.
Hi Squartube, That must have been an interesting job to work on those huge trucks. I am amazed how big they are when you see them in person. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
Once again, made my day! Some sources say Morenci is largest in US and one of the largest in the World. We call going to Alpine the Coronado Trail. What a contrast huh? Thanks
May be 15 years ago, I drove in from the southeast & into Clifton from the road coming from New Mexico. Then took 191 from there & down the road you just drove on this video. Went through Alpine, on to Eagar, Show Low, Payson, etc on 260. It was already 191 back then. so, it was state route 666? I remember back then, I took a wrong turn around Shiprock and was on old US666 which they changed to US491 (I think)... but whenever it was that I passed was right when they made the number change & they still had signs indicating it was old US666. I've been on a few different pieces of 191 in a few states to the north as well, and what I've been on is some of the most unique and beautiful scenery there is. I've been wanting to drive the whole road through it's entirety as a road trip from one end of the country to the other.
Hi Anton, It's a beautiful drive either direction you take. They changed it to highway 191 in 1993 because of the triple 6 number. I've also been on the 666 around shiprock before they changed it to the 491. Up there it kinda fits with the temps in the summer🤣 Have a great week!
What a nice road trip. I’m down in QC, AZ and often set up to Superior or Ray AZ to check out the mine. They has a similar overlook. I need to make that drive through to Alpine.
That’s a big shovel on top of the hill . I have seen a lot of Bighorn sheep on the side of the road in that area , they are not scared of anything and will literally be standing on the side of the road .
This hwy was made for Trans Ams and Corvettes! Love the area to much, I bought my acreage on the hwy about an hour north and planning a museum here for my Pontiacs.
You mentioned the mpg on those trucks. Fun fact: the engine does not power the wheels like in a car. The engine is used to turn a large alternator, which in turn provides electricity to the electric motors located at each wheel. Those are technically diesel-electric trucks, much like the diesel electric locomotives on railways.
In the past, Komatsu haul trucks were used here and they were powered like yo describe. Cat 793 and Cat 777 trucks are used and they are conventional diesel with rear differentian drive.
Copper, right now, is crazy desirable and expensive. Sadly the Phelps Dodge closed the processing facilite in Douglas that processed these ores into copper for both this mine and the mines in Bisbee. Production now in Mexico? What happened to our Country?
7:03 that is in fact crushed ore, not tailings though. This material will be crushed down to a smaller size and the either leached or sent through 1 of 2 mills, tailings is an after product of milling. Notice the structure is pretty well braced, in the 90s that structure actually collapsed onto the road and had to be rebuilt.
Been to the mine numerous times picking up 48,000 lb loads of copper. Took it to Conneticut usually. I never took 191(666) north because truck to long! And the tunnels too low!
Hi Freedomvideo, the 191 is a beautiful drive but it's pretty slow in places because of all the hairpin turns. That is a lot of copper to get to Connecticut. I am hoping to get to the northeast someday. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!
I drove a semi through 48 states. Loaded truck and trailer loaded with pontoon boats, onto an ocean going ferry to Newfoundland once. Then drove all the way around to St Johns!
I live in Cripple Creek, CO, similar giant open pit mine with layers getting higher every day. I took the tour and they said they pull out $1M in gold every day, and it goes into our cell phones. Also with huge trucks, mostly driven by women. Research states that women have better focus for long hours driving a big truck. Most of the processing is done here at the mine using cyanide. I see the tanker trucks delivering it daily. Like other eco disasters, we locals just try to forget about future problems.
Hi Randy loving your videos quality only a SeaBee could produce I was a volunteer Ranger in the Verde Valley Clarkdale and Jerome are similar places love this state Hold ⚓️ fast!

Hi Jim, I'm sure the fire did quite a bit of damage to the road in places and took some time to repair. It's a beautiful drive. Have a good week!
Randy,Amazing video as always, Thanks again my freind. 👍
Hi Lloyd, Thank you and have a great week buddy!
great video. what a mine site
Man....Those trucks are huge! Thanks for sharing.
Your Welcome. Have a good one!
Life was great living in old Morenci, I was born their now its gone
That is one big hole. Thanks for the trip!
Thanks Leon, Have a great week!

Hi Jill, You're welcome. A view from the air would be neat. Have a good day!
Beautiful drive up to Hannigan’s meadow Lodge, and the lovely community of Alpine… highway 191 continues North to ship Rock, New Mexico…
Thanks Long distance rider! See ya on the next one.
Used to work in that mine

Hi K, Thank you for the kind words, I really enjoy getting out and being able to share some of the unique places. Thanks again and have a great week!
I just took a selfie with my face centered in that huge tire. Nice ride to Alpine. Then back home through Glenwood NM and back to the 3-way.

I needed to hear your calming voice, your voice is like fresh air. Well, see you later :)
VERY COOL!! THANK YOU!!!
I was in charge of the welders that helped build the apartment complex for the miners back in 2013-2014, nice memories!

Hi David, Thanks for sharing and have a great week!
I'd love to see the difference driving it from north to south, instead of going they opposite way when I drove it before.
Each load averages 30k dollars. Over 90 trucks that haul 307 tons of rock per load
Wow,That's amazing! Thanks for that information and have a good week.
This was a very interesting and informative trip. Thanks.
You're welcome Helen, Have a great day!
Doing well. Thank you
Hi Tressinar, Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day.

Hi Karen, it looks even bigger in person. 😄

Hi Paragliding, It's remarkable how big both of those fires were, but they are recovering well with new growth. Have a great week!

I used to live in the little community of Whispering Pines, Az and there are many Elk there. I’ve got a picture of me with my arm around an Elk.
What a nice road trip. I’m down in QC, AZ and often set up to Superior or Ray AZ to check out the mine. They has a similar overlook. I need to make that drive through to Alpine.
Hi MrWilcox, It's a beautiful drive, especially during the summer. Have a good week!
Nowhere in the world can you drive side by side with a 270 ton haul truck except Morenci Arizona !
That’s a big shovel on top of the hill . I have seen a lot of Bighorn sheep on the side of the road in that area , they are not scared of anything and will literally be standing on the side of the road .

Trans ams and Corvettes? Nah the road is made for motorcycles.

Morenci AZ is home to the worlds largest speedbump,or is that Cliffton
Hi Lee, the speed hump is in Clifton. The speed slows down to 25 in town. They say it has helped. Hope that helps. Have a great week!

Hi Mike, There was a lot of earth moved in that area that's for sure. Have a good week!
Problem here is there will never be anything that can grow on those tailings. :(

Iran has the largest copper deposits in the world 🤑☠️
The mine is supposed to close this year because they aren't getting enough copper any longer
Interesting... I haven't heard that yet. Thanks for the update.
That’s not true, they aren’t closing any time soon
Only problem is no vegetation will ever grow in that soil and even worse is when the company is done mining they will leave the site as is.

5:30 It actually goes all the way to our Northern border into Canada.
Hi Wes, Thank you for letting me know, I didn't realize it went that far north. Have a good day!
