- A visit to the largest man-made hole in the world, the Bingham Canyon copper mine.
I made a few mistakes in my voice-over. The dump truck close up was actually of a 320 ton model, identifiable by the red lip on the front of the dump bed. Additionally the machine I thought was a 4100XPC was actually a 2800XPC, a slightly smaller model. The 4100XPC (#98) is up on the left side of the pit and there is a significant amount of footage of it in this video. - Авто та транспорт
Wow,I'm 74 now and when I came back from Vietnam I went to Tucson Arizona and worked at Pima mines, this video sure brings back lots of memories, thanks for sharing it😊
And to think I drove right through Salt Lake City on a solo vacation back in 2018. If I had known about this mine, I would have made plans to tour this place. Looks very cool.
This video was great! This was a Sunday Drive regular, when we lived at the bottom of the hill in Herriman.
Great film thanks a lot for uploading!
I visited this mine back in 1976 (48 years ago). It looks like it's grown twice the size since then...and back then it was still pretty damn impressive. We knew it at the time, as the Kennecott Mine.
Lived in utah in the 60s and would go up and look down at the equipment. Would like to go back after 60 years
Brilliant footage I hope to visit some day from Ireland
Been to the bottom of that pit many times. Used haul mill liners and bowls and mantles in for the crusher described.
I remember looking down from the old visitors center, wondering why the group of little cars were painted yellow when I realized they were full size school buses.
The dump trucks are the size of a 2 story home.
Liked and Subscribed, thanks again from the mountains of Idaho!
What a testament to the ingenuity of mankind. Wonderful place.
A water quality mess for hundreds of thousands of people living downstream.
@@freeheeler09 Can you point me to the investigation of the downstream water quality?
@@freeheeler09ahh look. Someone that doesn’t use copper or any other metals that are mined. You must live deep in the woods and don’t participate in our modern society.
Amazing !
Would be good to state what minerals they are mining.
@@user-ug7dm2ki9w primarily copper, but also smaller quantities of molybdenum, silver, and gold.
The Kennecott Copper Mine produces ... copper.
Beautiful and detailed footage! What camera and lenses were you shooting? Can't wait to visit here. Visitor center is currently closed.
Thanks. I shot it on a Panasonic GH5 with their 14-140 F3.5-5.6 lens. I've since upgraded to a Sony A7SIII.
great job thanks
I went there a few years ago. It was not open to visitors, so we hiked all the way to a peak to take a look at it.
That's dedication. Was it worth it?
@NorfKhazad still catching they're breath
Thanks for showing unedited footage of truck loading. Too many mining videos have to many cuts in there. I've been there a few times when I worked for Rio Tinto. Nice bunch of people.
I just started a week ago lol I trained today on the simulator that made me very nauseous 🤮
You can go up the backside on a poor gravel road and get the opposing view into here. Had to do that since tours were closed.
@@RRaucina I hope to have a chance to visit again in a year or two. I'll be sure to check that spot out when I do, thanks!
The ore that produced the metal for the medals in the 2002 Winter Olympics was mined there.
Just yesterday I was trying to explain to someone how, when we were first made, we had everything we needed. Everything beyond that has a cost, but, because we're addicted to convenience, we don't pay attention to that cost. This mine is a big, blatant, gaping reminder of that.
And how we used to live came with early death. Disease. Famine. A hoard of men could show up at any moment and kill everyone that wasn’t fit to work and enslave those that were left. Damn these modern times made possible because of mines like this. Yeah don’t ever think of the big picture or the obvious.

Those trucks are actually pulling anywhere from 360 to 400 tons of dirt.
Yep. No matter how dense the material is, they get loaded to the fill line
I couldn't imagine how much fuel they go through!
they ALL look like micro machines in a giant sandlot
I hail all the way from Brazil. Amazing and very informative video! Excellent job ! also work with minings !
I remember my first time going to the bottom of this pit to get in my truck..
Do you work there?
@@helloworld4259 I did a couple years ago
When the side of the mine gave way in 2013, there were reports that those huge trucks (some, not all) were crushed like toys under the sheer volume of material that sloughed off.
They have literally moved a mountain. It is a scar on a once beautiful valley.
What are they mining? It would make a great landfill or lake when there done
Copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum.
And when all minerals are depleted the company will leave the giant hole as you see it alone with hazardous waste.
Gee, why not fill it in and make it a golf course? Why not give up your electricity going to your hot tub on copper wires?
That "hazardous" waste as you call it, is what makes up the earth. You walk over it every day.
I've heard about that mine it's supposed to be a copper gold mine did they happen to tell how many tons of gold and copper they pull every year.
Approximately 300,000 tons of copper and 13-14 tons of gold.
Every ten truckloads yields about one gram of pay dirt. Thus the vast 24/7 scale of making the mountain invert itself not so naturally.
This planet we live on is enormous
But is it?
Yes it is.
According to some ideologies, natural resources are unlimited - help yourself.
I would love to take a trials motorbike for a razz round there .
You'd get lost on the maze of haul roads
If you bribed the right person, you'd probably get permission.
BIG PIT
WHAT are they mining?
Yeah, I thought I missed that. Just a little oversight in his otherwise informative video. I'm pretty sure the primary ore that is being mined is copper.
@@willhicks2259 It is. I researched it after viewing. It's the Kenneycot Copper mine.
Mostly copper but they also mine gold, silver, and molybdenum
wow. wow that is a hole, ? is what will happen when the mine closes?
They shut the gate, hang a road closed sign, and call it a day.
What are they getting out of that hole?
@@nooneknows6060 Primary copper, but also gold and silver.
A lot of trucks sitting around doing nothing. Coffee is cheaper than diesel, park em up lads.
Why is there no people outside the vehicles?
I think they try to avoid having people walking on the ground near operating equipment. You may have noticed that most of the smaller vehicles like pickup trucks have very tall flags on them. This is so the operators in the dumptrucks can see them and don't run them over. You can imagine this might be a problem for a person on the ground.
Autonomous haul trucks?
@@pearlwhitehd Nope.
It was gigantic over 50 years ago!!!
We could see Kennekot Copper from Hill AFB 40 miles north.
Why are some trucking pink
7-8-2024 central banks ? Feed the beast.
Buy anything lately or do you make everything out of wood?
What does this removal of material at this scale do to the earth's rotation??? 😮
I very much doubt it's enough to have any noticeable impact.
LOL
Pretty soon leap year will be every 3 years, instead of 4 to compensate. Along with a slight increase in high tide in some locations.
All this thing need is 100 bucketwheel excavator
Bucketwheel excavators wouldn't be of any use in a mine like this. They only work in softer materials.
Chuquicamata is bigger
The video show no justice to these trucks there a size of a house
The slide:

That's fantastic footage. It's hard to grasp the scale of it.
You obviously haven't met my ex 😂
The biggest darkest hole in the world 🌎.... 🕳 aka my ex wife.....
🤣 she told me she wanted a separation, I told her I wanted a divorce.

@@caydenbrundle2905 Hilary Clinton.....
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Why is there a school bus at the bottom, don't they know about child labor laws?

How make Woke environmentalists tried to shut this down?
??????????????????????? EXCELLENT VIDEO! I WISH YOU WOULD EXPLAIN HOW A RADAR HELPS TO DETERMINE THAT A LAND SLIDE IS GOING TO HAPPEN??????
@@michaelflaxcombsr9095 my understanding is the radar system can detect small shifts in large areas of the mine walls, allowing them to predict when larger landslides are imminent.
EXCELLENT VIDEO !!!!!! YOU MAKE A VERY GOOD VIDEO. PROFESSIONALLY DONE, WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE SITE AND INFORMATION THAT GIVES THE VIEWER EVERYTHING THATS REQUIRED TOO EDUCATE, AND INFORM ABOUT THE MINE! THANK YOU! AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BUDDY!
