Garbe Mohammed - the Bead Man of Ghana

- On our recent trip to Ghana, we had a chance to speak to Garve Mohammed, who is a fourth-generation bead merchant with a stall at the famous Koforidua beads market.
He has been selling and trading beads across West Africa his whole working life - in Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Mali. Garve has shared with us some of his most valuable beads - including chevron beads, Roman face beads and others.
Ghanaian beads are a fundamental part of the country's heritage. From Ghanaian waist beads to recycled glass beads, their popularity has been increasing over the past decade. Ghana's own Krobo beads are probably the most popular type of African beads!

He's so passionate about the beads I would love to get some waist beads from him
CALM SAVAGE much passion for beads! #TurboBeads
Imagine if rappers went on stage with big ass beads instead of gold chains
I had to sell the Italian world war two Gold a grandmother figure gave me after I was modern enslaved the last time I made it back to Texas to survive. But MY JEWELRY made with BEADS will always be mine and I can make more to sell.
This is a positive, happy man, very proud of his family trade. I really like him.
I'm drooling while watching this. So many pretty beads! He truly loves what he does.
The book he shows is a great one, "The History of Beads: From 30, 000 B.C. to the Present" by Lois Sherr. He definitely knows beads very well and, I'm sure, the collector values of ancient beads. I appreciate his knowledge, experience and devotion!
I have that book.
Thankss
Thanks for putting the book name I am doing a project about beads
OMG! I have this book too. In Haiti beads are used as a way to spiritually connect to our Ancestors, and also for protection. 👏🏾🙏🏾🇭🇹❤ 🇬🇭🇧🇯🇹🇬🇳🇬
A very important book for all who collect.
That looks like heaven on earth. I could spend every day there for a week and still not see everything he has to offer.
Passionate about beads. They are beautiful beads. I'd like to go to Africa just to look at his beads.
Evonne H. Beads are so wonderful! #TurboBeads
Evonne Goddess ByNature I got lovely beads from IG: @Kr8tiva . They sell amazing beads
As a jewelry maker, I appreciate his passion and love for these beads. I LOVE African beads.(I don't know much about the different types from each country, so I simply know them as African.) I love that this heritage has been preserved so beautifully, which isn't easy in this modern world.
My imagination took me to his bead shop! I will save money to go. I have been dreaming of Ghana forever!
I would also love to know it would be great for him to expand his business
I could listen to him talk about beads for hours. So passionate. I want to go to that bead market
He speaks of these beads with great pride sooo proud.
Thanks for this- what an amazing bead historian he is! The reference book at the end (The History of Beads by Lois Sherr Dubin) is one of my favourites, and I've gone through it several times, but have never seen the beads featured in the timeline in someone's hand life this before. Fascinating to see the scale of these rare, ancient little pieces of art.
Someone I would love to meet.
Sherylita Mason-Calhoun me too #TurboBeads
This person exudes such warmth, and his stall is like a museum... another item on my bucket list :D.
What an awesome man! Awesome trade! Beautiful beads. So interesting the history behind the ceremonial beading. Kinda shocking to hear a slave was worth 1 bead. Good to see times have changed, but traditions not lost!
I will be going to Ghana when the world opens bck up. I love this mans spirit he is so passionate about his father’s legacy & takes pride in it. I’m new to bead making so that’s wht led me to his video🙏🏽💪🏽🙌🏽
I'm in love with african culture😩💕
Mr. Mohammed, are you in Tamale by any chance? I feel as though I met you many years ago in the market there. I remember seeing that first ancient bead you showed, the 7 layer bead. If it was really you, I am so happy to see you thriving and still doing business to this day. I still have the beads I bought there and I treasure them. I cannot remember if I bought any beads from you, if not I regret that decision! The year was 2000 when I was there.
What a proud and passionate person...superb explanation too!!!! So much to learn from him...
So cool. The beads are beautiful.
Oh my word I would love to visit Ghana someday. Gotta to plan out my trip when next I go to Nigeria to do a Ghanaian trip too. I love beads and he has so many beautiful ones. The chevron beads are to die for (my favorite shade of blue mixed with Earth red).

I may be wrong, but the last bead he shows looks to be Phoenician... Well over 2000 years old...
I started my waist bead business and I sell them for $5.99 my question how can I make a bundle of them and sell at festivals if I don’t know the waist size prior to making? I’ve been making waist beads and wearing them for two years. I love the meanings and concepts about them.
I would make them larger and then downsize as needed.
