Exploring Japan's "congratulations love" fish train | Nankai Kada Line

- I spent a day exploring the Nankai Kada Line in Wakayama, Japan. This short spur line runs between Wakayama-shi and Kada stations on a somewhat dingy, rural part of coastal Wakayama. The Kada line has been re-imagined in recent years as a "sakana" (fish) line, with decorations inside and outside the trains to match. Besides that, the cars have different colors and names, and a back story explaining their lives together.
I rode between some of the stations on the Kada Line, and walked between others. I found some attractive but inert neighborhoods, still-maintained but slowly decaying buildings, a lovely and empty beach, and a welcoming, attractive small-town vibe in this obscure corner of the Kansai region.

I’ve found that at least learning how to say PLEASE & THANK YOU in the local language will get you much further than knowing nothing at all. 😻
Very unusual to see spotless clean rail cars not destroyed with spray paint like all are in the USA including freight train box cars ETC.
Like another world there !
Japan is actually SHOCKINGLY clean! In the US, we COULD educate children that to litter and destroy things is shameful! Make them clean the school like they do in Japan.
That would be considered cruelty in the US the ACLU would not stand for that ...@@chrismd00
Hillarious! Mind you, the Japanese are not alone in attributing human traits to non-human entities. Us Brits after all, invented Thomas the Tank Engine ... 🤣
Love Saturday mornings these days with these obscure lines, all not too far from your home in Kansai. Hopefully you can keep branching out (pardon the train pun). One train I took last year was the Blue Symphony on the Kintetsu line out of Namba, and it is a limited "luxury" train to Yoshino station, last station on the line, a famous sakura area in the mountains south of Nara. Not expensive at all, beautiful cars with great food and drink car. Highly recommend it.
I do plan on taking the Blue Symphony one of these days, good suggestion. The next videos will be from some ultra-snowy trains in Hokkaido though -- a bit farther outside Kansai, but worth it!
@@T1DWanderer Thanks Jeremy. Looking forward to both train videos, can't wait to see Hokkaido trains in winter!
Love how cute the modern Japanese are!
How long have you lived in Japan? Why are you living there? I can’t seem to find your back story but it’s part of who this channel is, I think, and I love this channel! 😻🌻🌻
I've been here (on and off) since 2004. I came here to teach English and just... kept staying year after year, somehow
Marvelous. I was just thinking that a train line like this one, which seems fairly ordinary (to judge by what I've seen from your videos) would seem so extraordinary in North America. I was just wistfully wishing there were a 10 km train in my town. Thanks, as ever, for bringing us along.
Good point, this is unique in Japan but not wildly so. Thanks!
This video is as fresh as a daisy I must say.
Haha
Another winner, Jeremy. Thanks for a taste of Japanese culture, such a combination of the traditional and the fanciful. Are you planning anything for this summer? -- charlie, sacramento ca
I'll be doing something this summer but I don't know what yet. But, you recently asked me when I was going to ride trains in the snow -- well, I've been doing that, and those videos will be next. Dedicated to you!
0:42 US Route 66.
Apparently world renowned! lol
I think so! Kind of like Elvis
The first bridge crossed was a salmon color. 🐟 Really enjoy your videos 📹 😊😊 Thanks Jeremy
Heh, good point. Thanks!
@@T1DWanderer no problem 😊
Thank you so much for making this video! Your content is immensely interesting! To learn about a country I’ll probably never get to see in my lifetime is really great. I didn’t realize most of what you detail about Japanese culture…it actually sounds right up my alley as I’m a very weird lady! And love cats..a very Japanese thing. But this train is sooo beyond bizarre, omg. But ya know, maybe the fairytale train is much needed in this stupid, increasingly cruel world? I think so and maybe one reason it seems to have a lot of riders? Anyway, I’m only half-way done watching so I’ll resume. Oh & your personality is just AWESOME! ❤️
Thanks for saying that! And if you like cats and fairytale trains, try my video about the "cat stationmaster" train if you haven't seen it :)
Always a pleasure to watch❤❤❤
Another fun vlog. That train line was unique. Loved the pirate themed set.
Inexplicable, but undeniablly cool!
Hello. During years 2005-2010 I spent in total 18 months in Osaka (in Kadoma). I was surprised that nearest beach I found was in Suma, behind Kobe. The beach was full of people at summer (July and August), but when I got there also at September it was almost empty. The temperature was still over 30°C, but it seem to me that Japanese people take beach only as summer activity.
Anyway I like your videos because I was wandering around Osaka (and up to 50-60km from Osaka) in similar way, so it is nice to see what I missed during my travel. Please continue to make these videos.
Heh, not surprised by the "September empty beach" story. The calendar dictates what happens, not weather or reality ;) I'll keep exploring, thanks for watching!
Thank you for this fun and interesting vlog!
Good thing they didn't market the creation of Amtrak as a marriage.
Haha
hello, how do you make payment for this train? is it by tapping the transport card?
Yes I used a prepaid train card with an IC chip, the same one I use for every train in Japan
Never happen in this filthy country >
It starts at home and is spread around the streets, growing at leaps and bounds nowadays. ..
