Luckily I never had to do it. I go step by step, checking all my stuff once a year to do a big declutter, little by little. I once was too attached to things so it takes a lot of energy for me to part with stuff.
No, but we did with my daughter. I had to help clean out her "trap house" after her last relapse 😩...I try to not think about it BUT I am so grateful for this podcast. It has allowed me to let go...
I am getting ready to move out of state and was just thinking about this. Throw out and donate everything that I dont need or care about. I like to get rid of 75% of my stuff
We’re planning on a move cross country. I’m willing to start completely fresh. My biggest worry is finding new doctors for my disabled husband. I’ve never had to transfer things like this and I’m scared.
During a cross country, U-Haul move a few years back, my truck was broken into and about 14 to 16 boxes of my things were stolen. At first, it really bothered me for a long time, but then, as you were saying here, there was just this tremendous sense of freedom at some point because even though those things had been taken from me against my will, it did make me realize that stuff is just stuff, no matter where or who it came from, and it has made it so much easier for me to go forward and just let go of things. Which results in my feeling lighter and clearer and more excited about living my life.
I really liked your response about clutter being an opportunity for generosity and how there’s a difference between abundance and wealth. Letting go of things is more about our reluctance to part with our association with those things. It’s so true that poverty is a mindset and that you can be happy even if you’re broke. Thank you for this reminder, much love to you!
Had a flood, and cleared it up but found hidden mold several months later and I was reacting to it. Had to toss everything, and start over, while ill. I had to go through a grieving process, because of the suddeness of it all.
We shouldn't donate stuff if we think they have bed bugs in them because we will just give someone else the same problem. I even wrote on my matress and nightstans that I threw away huge sign on both sides "bed bugs ", so nobody would take it.
I bought Everything That Remains months ago and I'm finally reading it now. Perfect timing as we're selling our house that I've lived in all my 33 years. Came along at the perfect time thank you thank you! I'm enjoying Josh's poetic interludes and Ryan's humor. So well written and I'm recommending to EVERYONE.
I have gotten rid of 85% of not needed stuff because of bed bugs which was a blessing in disguise. I do not have them anymore. However, after four months went by, I gotten rid of 85% more stuff. At first I morned some if it, now I am happy to let go of stuff. Can't understand why I had much stuff I didn't use in the first place.
Anne's question really hit close to home. I grew up poor. Section 8 housing. Single disable parent. Christmas toys that were donated by local charities to my mom... i put myself through college and now as an adult i have accumulated things that i never could have had when i was young. I have a large collection of dolls that ive spent at least $1000 on. I have a collection of gaming things. I feel like i have a lot of stuff and on one hand i feel like i should stop buying stuff but on the otherhand, the stuff brings happiness to me... i feel stuck.
Thank you for you sharing! 👍
I have the 5 questions wallpaper on my phone as my screensaver. I use it by starting with question #5 and usually get to stop there. Love you guys. Keep doing what you do 😊
I don’t know the age of the son with the music equipment but I would put my foot down and say, “I’m not paying for the storage unit any longer and I don’t want any of that stuff in the house so if you want to keep that stuff you got to pay for storing it.” Then get your stuff out of there and give him the option of keeping that unit or getting a smaller cheaper unit. I’d also have him calculate the cost of storage and the cost of his stuff and see if he might be better off selling that stuff and replacing the equipment at another time.
Buy a large chest freezer. Bed bugs will die after 4 days in zero degrees. You’ll know they’ll be dead when you remove the item if there was something in there.
I had bed bugs for three years I tried everything. My daughter had toys and clothes. One day I mixed apple cider vinegar and lavender oil. I sprayed it every where just once and the bed bugs disappeared. I know if you put you furniture outside in the sun they don't like heat for clothing I washed everything and had put in the dryer the heat kills them by drying them out. I bought bed bugs covers for the bed mattress and zipped them in they can last a year without blood. After that they dry out and die. I still own my furniture and clothes. I don't have to throw away and spend money to buy new things. I can do it right and when time passes give away to a goodwill or give to some one who needs it but done right everything can be cleaned and saved.
I think about it all the time. Back in 2009, our development had a huge fire and many lost their homes as the fire jumped around sparing some and burning down others. We had to stay in a hotel and they finally had a chart that told which homes were gone. Our section received little damage and I was thrilled at the time. However, thinking back, I wondered what it would have been like to totally start over (I did grab things like paperwork, photos and my jewelry at 2:00 a.m. before running out). But now, I realize, I'm kind of a hoarder and wonder if, 15 years later, would I still be in a cluttered home even though I had an opportunity to start fresh. We sold a home in 2005, which we just got a dumpster and got rid of almost everything and now, 20 years later, this home is as cluttered as the old one was (without the benefit of a basement that we used to have). I feel like it's not the clutter....it's me.
I would not sell anything to anyone else, that may has potential such as bugs to be somebody else’s’ s nightmare. It’s important to always be considerate. Burn that stuff and walk away. Or, go through the same nightmare.
I would throw it away and start over. Like others commenters have said do not donate items with a bug infestation. You will just be passing the problem on to someone else.
What is the end goal though? I have an antique looking phone on my wall that's not functional, but decorative. Same with a wall piano in the living room. I have a china cabinet that's full of various things that I may or may not need at some point, but if I emptied out all the drawers, then what? Should I get rid of these "unfunctional" things? Is the goal to have a completely empty house except for the bare necessities? At what point do you stop the minimalism? I think some people find comfort in the unusable things that surround them because they are familiar and remind them of different things. If I took down all of the picture frames from my walls and just had the memories in my mind that would be fine, but there's a reason that people hang them up. Same with knock nacks. If we get rid of everything sentimental or things that remind us of other things, then we would just be living in an institutionalized cell and it would be very similar to old people that I have seen in nursing homes where they only have a few belongings and just a couple of things that remind them of the life that they used to live. I'm torn between minimalism and sentiment. Part of me wants to empty my house of everything that I don't use on a daily basis. But I also know that I would end up with an empty house and then what?
In my mind if theres a need to keep the idea of a memory alive with stuff its actual neurosis. Doesn't mean nivk nacks are evil. People forget how valuable of a canvas some empty space can be, even mentally. When ive lost photo albums it makes me realize how much I kept memories in photos and essentially wouldn't remember non photoed memories the same way. Only so much mental space so why not let yourself naturally hold onto the valuable memories instead of grasping for the idea of what you think "was" through the sentimental items.
I feel reading your post that you are not o. The space to do this, don’t force it, enjoy your life and be gentle with yourself. it is not a big deal, whether you get rid of stuff, or hang on to some, if it’s not the level of hoarding
I actually threw away andsorted my parents house with my brother when parents was on vacation. Only broken things, things that are never used and things like that but it got better. At the time we where four under the same roof and it a so bad. Both parents are horders and hygene is out of question. When they came back mom got so mad.. BUT HN SHE KINDA SETTLED WITH IT and realized she didnt miss the things, she actully very slowly started declutter. It still really bad and when they die we prob have to burn the house BUT i think her mind changed a bit even tho she still have the «keep in case» or sentimental mind.
Did it once. The cherished items fit in a 2 door sedan. I moved 1000 + miles away & began ... I still have a regulator clock that's 40 years old. It's a symbol to me
Bedbugs. -- they even get into electronic. A deep freeze for a certain amount of time can help (not sure how long). My sister had them -- they scare me. I would throw stuff out and NOT risk it.

Those bed bugs are long since dead, there is no host in which to feed off of, so she's making her son suffer for her ignorance and fear. By all means, trash your things, don't make the kid suffer cuz you're out of touch.
Get rid of your stuff and let your son cling to his stuff. Maybe you can get to a smaller unit or if he is old enough he can pay for it till he is ready but he doesnt have to bring it into your house.
My sister kept things that mice had eaten half of and then peed on the remainder. She was younger then but in extremis sometimes it's not about the item that you're keeping.

Not really that extreme lol …. But I love a good purge 🎉😂it’s healthy when it’s needed

Yes, recently. I feel privileged to be able to do so. I call it, "starting fresh".
No, but we did with my daughter. I had to help clean out her "trap house" after her last relapse 😩...I try to not think about it BUT I am so grateful for this podcast. It has allowed me to let go...
Loving TK's quote: "Clutter is an opportunity for generosity" 👍🏼🙂
I am getting ready to move out of state and was just thinking about this.
Throw out and donate everything that I dont need or care about.
I like to get rid of 75% of my stuff
Possessions possess you.
I am doing just that and it’s the best feeling!!!
We just moved out of state! We got rid of a ton!

We are moving and I’ve let go of several carloads that I do not want to unpack in my new home! It’s so freeing!

You are not the story behind your stuff, but each person has to make that transformational moment of realization.
Don't donate things that may contain bugs 🤦♀ Hellllooo
Please don’t try to *sell things to others that you’re afraid to have *bugs in them! 😢 yikes…
No more 2nd-hand for me!
That's what I was thinking. Also, makes me think twice about ever renting a storage unit.
Haha my thought exactly for a second but can happen with anything really, even someone who gifts you a gift and they didn’t know.
"Let it go, to let the energy flow"
Thank you for that one!!!

Yes! Why spread ones problems to others. Even putting in storage might spread to other's storage.

Getting rid of everything sounds like a dream come true. I feel Stuck with my past. Especially photos. I can't let go of them.
I agree about photos and home videos. So many of them and it’s a real mental burden to organise although I can’t part with them.
Digitizing helps ❤ you can even pay someone to do it. Then store in the cloud or on a hard drive. You can buy a digital picture frame

Wow…did not know that!
You can leave things like luggage after a trip, in your car under a hot sun. The heat can kill bedbugs.
I had a mold issue and got rid of almost everything I own. I still have more I need to get rid of and I do feel better
Just joined a buy nothing group to get rid of stuff I can’t be bothered to sell.
Why would anyone sell anything that’s affected by mold? I hope this is being regarded as a criminal fact.
Exactly! Same with bed bugs. Why sell or donate items that could have bed bugs? Just throw them away.

if theres a possibility of bed bugs, DON'T donate.
Excellent point!!!
i've started to declutter my storage until 2 weeks ago and while sell my things I felt like pieces of me was leaving. weird feeling
Doing this presently... for me it's the right thing to do! ♥️🎻😎
A scent dog trained to detect bedbugs could be used in the opening situation.
You put bedbugs into storage? Omg
..that'll affect people in adjoining units
Ya no doubt🤦🏼♀️
So the first caller thinks there are bedbugs in her stuff so she wants to donate it. Not very nice.
Pure evil
Would the bugs potentially migrate to other adjoining storage units if they are still infected?
That is my concern. I think so!
How did you survive starting over from job loss, marriage loss, etc? What did you do to bounce back besides the ‘stuff’ part?

Minimalism works when there is plenty of supply and no inflation. Not true anymore.

Why do all you guys wear the same blank shirt?
Bed bugs die in 3 seconds by being Steamed. Oh and also fleas.
