Saw a different youtube video on this and the uploader cited the writers of the movie and according to them: 1. Ursula and Triton ARE siblings. Both possess powers. Because he was a man he got the throne after Poseidon's death even though he was significantly younger than her. As consolation she received the enchanted shell from her father Poseidon, while Triton got the crown, trident, and throne. She felt it was unfair and that the throne was her birthright as the eldest of Poseidon's children. 2. Ursula was very beautiful before she looked like herself. Her natural appearance was the way she appears as Vanessa. After Triton was named king, she turned herself into a human and lived on land. Yes, it's how she knew how they behaved on land. It was also how she knew how to turn Ariel into a human and it's why in her own human form she resembles Ariel in such a way that an aunt and niece might resemble one another. She always could have transformed back into how she looked originally. But she let hate, jealousy, and anger consume her. 3. On land, Ursula fell in love with a sailor. Because she trusted him, she told him the truth that she was a mermaid and proved it by turning into a mermaid in front of him. Soon after, he left her for another woman. In her pain, she fled back into the sea and turned herself into an abomination, swearing off of love forever and making sure she never let anyone else fall in love with her again. But the sailor and all of his shipmates knew the secrets of the mer-kingdom thanks to Ursula. They came and attacked the mermaids, and the end result was the death of several mermaids, including Ariel's mother, Queen Athena. 4. Triton blamed Ursula for Athena's death, as Ursula was the one who gave away the secrets of the mer-kingdom, so he banished her. 5. Ariel, like many other mermaids, has the ability to enchant men with her voice. Ursula does not have this ability and thought if she had, her sailor would have remained in love with her. But she does have the shell, so she uses it to steal Ariel's enchanted voice, as we see in the movie, and she turns herself into a human again, uses Ariel's voice to enchant Eric, and in a moment of irony, makes Ariel think that Eric has fallen in love with another woman, named Vanessa. And where and why does Ursula come up with this name? 1. Because, obviously, she doesn't want Ariel to know it's her, and 2. Because Vanessa was the name of the "other woman" who Ursula's sailor lover left her for.
What if that sailor and Ursula did you know what and when Ursula figured out she was pregnant with Uma the sailor left her, since Uma didn't use dark magic to change human to octopus in Descendents 2, she changed form through her emotion of anger. So if Uma's dad was the sailor that means Uma is part octopus and human giving her the ability to change forms automatically through her own choice (so she can shape shift between two forms because she is part two types of things)

In the original Tale what became the character Vinessa and Ursula were two separate people that had nothing to do with each other. Ariel just lucked out that there was a young lady that happened to look a little like her in the village. As for the movies if it weren't for The Little Mermaid 2. she could have been written as a former client of a different sea witch. I feel massive sympathy over Ursula for she was one of the misunderstood Villains but it was quite overwhelming to know that she's just getting what she deserve after King Triton took over her precious throne and was vanish at his sight under his command to took over the whole oceanic world and dethroned her in his realm which she covet from Ursula. Agreed to a certain extent. Unfortunately, we know how hierarchies go... if a Male is born, then they are the heir. The first born male... it happens to be him so going off their tradition, he was the rightful heir. That aside, she killed her damn sisters. That's pretty sick and twisted to me. The story I learned was that Ursula was once a beautiful mermaid with a silver tail but the people hated that she killed animals for ingredients in magic so they banished her. She had a cave filled with ingredients for magic and she always sat on this rock that you could see the shore from. One day she saw a man and fell in love with him so, she used her magic to give herself legs and unlike the movie, she still had her voice. The only thing that would happen is that every step she took it would feel like a thousand knives were stabbing her in the feet and if the man she loved married someone else she would either have to kill the man on the night he was married and return or she would turn to sea foam. She did it and got legs. She changed her name to Vanessa and fell in love with the man and the man became her friend. The man never told her that he had a girlfriend whom he was engaged to and when she came back to get married Vanessa (Ursula) was emotionally damaged and she would have done anything to get him back but he married the woman he was engaged to and so on the night of there marriage, she killed the man in his sleep, changed her name back, and came back to the ocean and instead of her beautiful tail, there were eight gross black tentacles.
I think Ursula has always been jealous of Triton's throne and him.being in charge of the ocean ever since she lived in his kingdom. I dont think.they are related because Triton is a merman and Ursula is an octopin. However I do think they are half siblings. Their father is Poseidon, but they both do have different mothers because notice in the deleted song in TLM 2, that Morgana sings, in the portrait of her and ursula when they were kids with their mother. Triton is not in the portrait. Now if they were related, Triton would be in the portrait with ursula and morgana and their mom. In the story of Medusa, she was a high priestess for Athena which required her to be pure. As a result of feud between Poseidon and Athena he raped Medusa but Athena punished Medusa for 'luring' him and transformed her into a hideous snake woman. Could be a similar case wit Ursula
That doesn't really make sense though because goddess Athena wanted nothing to do with men and swore to it. Athena the queen however has nothing against men so it would not make sense if Athena didn't want her to be with men. that last theory gives a whole different meaning to the phrase that Ursula says little befor turning into vanessa "she's better than I tought" it could mean that Ariel's voice is more powerfull than Ursula originally tought. Then again, if Eric fell in love with Ariel due to being under a spell, it wouldn't be "true love" and any kiss they could have shared would have not worked, but in the end Ariel gets her human legs from her father's magic, we never see any "true love magic" so it could be that he is enchanted...

Here's my two cents: King Trident and Ursula are siblings, different mothers or not (remember, hybrid species in Greek mythology can be radically different even among siblings), and Trident banished Ursula because she wanted better relations with humans on land. Think about it: Trident's hatred of humans and the surface world is irrationally fierce. Maybe he didn't want Ursula making alliances where he couldn't follow to take a close eye on her (Ursula's shown she has no problem traversing land). Whether Ursula had good intentions or not, she became bitter after her banishment and only wanted to overthrow Trident; losing sight of why she wanted to rule so badly in the first place.

Hi The Things! I have a few theories of my own about Ursula, and one in particular I think seems realistic. My theory goes along with the "Daddy's Little Angel" backstory. It states that Ursula was very jealous of her older sisters. What if Vanessa's appearance and name was inspired by Ursula's oldest sister? It makes sense from a symbolic stand point. She was going to get her revenge, become royalty in a kingdom where she was much more appreciated, and become queen of the sea as well. Why not steal the name and physical beauty of the person she originally hated and envied the most? Just a thought!

She was actually the prettiest of her sisters and wanted to be on land just like ariel, however when ursala took form and became human she learned all the bad things about men and knowledge about land. Everyone has their own version of sirens and mermaids. Depends on the writer, and the world they come from within the story. In my novel, sirens look like mermaids to the men, but to the women, they look scaley with spikes running down their spines. Their teeth are also like a sharks, or a phirana fish. Just depends on the person's imagination. There is no right or wrong. But mermaids are definitely not sirens. The op of this post os right about that.
I kind of thought Ursula was evil on the outside because she was sad inside and that's why I chose Phyllis Smith to play Ursula in the live-action/CGI remake of "The Little Mermaid"! I also chose Francesca Angelucci Capaldi, who has long red hair and a beautiful flawless angelic voice, to play Ariel and Noah Schnapp, who is very handsome with short black hair, to play Prince Eric as if Disney brought Charlie Brown and the little red-haired girl together and as if Charlie Brown didn't slip on that puddle of punch or accidently set off the sprinkler and had his dance with the little red-haired girl! Vanessa is Ursula pre-banning. Her real name is probably Vanessa. It would make most sense, then she looks more like King Triton, he had brown hair in the prequel. Triton must have exiled her so bad after the loss of his father and sisters (bc Ursula wanted the throne) she probably was cursed, vanished, and wants revenge on Triton. This using his youngest most precious daughter (a reminder of Ursula’s naive young self) to achieve the crown, kingdom, and power. That is great power of manipulation and grudge.

A part of me thinks the entire sibling theory is dumb because of the difference in species, but if it's true that they were and Ursula was just cursed in that body at some point, she probably needed Ariel's pure voice to regain her previous form. If that's what happened, then Morgana should have a previous form as well, but was never shown to have one...

1. Ursula and Triton ARE siblings. Both possess powers. Because he was a man he got the throne after Poseidon's death even though he was significantly younger than her. As consolation she received the enchanted shell from her father Poseidon, while Triton got the crown, trident, and throne. She felt it was unfair and that the throne was her birthright as the eldest of Poseidon's children.
2. Ursula was very beautiful before she looked like herself. Her natural appearance was the way she appears as Vanessa. After Triton was named king, she turned herself into a human and lived on land. Yes, it's how she knew how they behaved on land. It was also how she knew how to turn Ariel into a human and it's why in her own human form she resembles Ariel in such a way that an aunt and niece might resemble one another. She always could have transformed back into how she looked originally. But she let hate, jealousy, and anger consume her.
3. On land, Ursula fell in love with a sailor. Because she trusted him, she told him the truth that she was a mermaid and proved it by turning into a mermaid in front of him. What if that sailor and Ursula did you know what and when Ursula figured out she was pregnant with Uma the sailor left her, since Uma didn't use dark magic to change human to octopus in Descendents 2, she changed form through her emotion of anger. So if Uma's dad was the sailor that means Uma is part octopus and human giving her the ability to change forms automatically through her own choice (so she can shape shift between two forms because she is part two types of things)

The story I learned was that Ursula was once a beautiful mermaid with a silver tail but the people hated that she killed animals for ingredients in magic so they banished her. She had a cave filled with ingredients for magic and she always sat on this rock that you could see the shore from. She did it and got legs. She changed her name to Vanessa and fell in love with the man and the man became her friend. The man never told her that he had a girlfriend whom he was engaged to and when she came back to get married Vanessa (Ursula) was emotionally damaged and she would have done anything to get him back but he married the woman he was engaged to and so on the night of there marriage, she killed the man in his sleep, changed her name back, and came back to the ocean and instead of her beautiful tail, there were eight gross black tentacles.
I think Ursula has always been jealous of Triton's throne and him.being in charge of the ocean ever since she lived in his kingdom. I dont think.they are related because Triton is a merman and Ursula is an octopin. However I do think they are half siblings. Their father is Poseidon, but they both do have different mothers because notice in the deleted song in TLM 2, that Morgana sings, in the portrait of her and ursula when they were kids with their mother. Triton is not in the portrait. Now if they were related, Triton would be in the portrait with ursula and morgana and their mom. I think Triton just invited Ursula to live in his kingdom as a welcoming. And years later she didnt like Triton getting all the credit of ruling the ocean and that devolped jealousy and a plot to dethrone Triton. Even in the movie itself I feel bad for her. Here's my two cents: King Trident and Ursula are siblings, different mothers or not (remember, hybrid species in Greek mythology can be radically different even among siblings), and Trident banished Ursula because she wanted better relations with humans on land.
Think about it: Trident's hatred of humans and the surface world is irrationally fierce. Maybe he didn't want Ursula making alliances where he couldn't follow to take a close eye on her (Ursula's shown she has no problem traversing land).
Whether Ursula had good intentions or not, she became bitter after her banishment and only wanted to overthrow Trident; losing sight of why she wanted to rule so badly in the first place.

Hi The Things! I have a few theories of my own about Ursula, and one in particular I think seems realistic.
My theory goes along with the "Daddy's Little Angel" backstory. It states that Ursula was very jealous of her older sisters. What if Vanessa's appearance and name was inspired by Ursula's oldest sister? It makes sense from a symbolic stand point. She was going to get her revenge, become royalty in a kingdom where she was much more appreciated, and become queen of the sea as well. Why not steal the name and physical beauty of the person she originally hated and envied the most? Just a thought!

She was actually the prettiest of her sisters and wanted to be on land just like ariel, however when ursala took form and became human she learned all the bad things about men and knowledge about land. Just like ariel Ursala fell in love with a man in this case a boatsman and trusted him, took him to atlanta and showed him the magic, however the boatsman was of evil man and he threw her to the lions and had athena, ariels mom murderes by the him and the boatsmen. In the third movie theyre seen stealing all of king tritons daughters stuff, little did you know, king triton hates ursala because she showed the humans about magic amd atlanta and the area they called home. She broke trust with the kindom because she was power hungry and thats why she was banished
he fell in love with her even without her voice ( i think) which is why he fought for her when they were all in the ocean. Its been a minute since ive seen it so i could be mistaken

The reason why one of the lyrics are “it’s she who holds her tongue who gets a man” is because the original story Ursula takes her tongue not her voice I had just watched several videos about the original story of the little mermaid!

It is interesting how in the original fairytale that the sea witch is not good but not really evil. Her exchange with the little mermaid is more or less just a formal business transaction. And she doesn’t take her voice, but her tongue.

Everyone has their own version of sirens and mermaids. Depends on the writer, and the world they come from within the story.
In my novel, sirens look like mermaids to the men, but to the women, they look scaley with spikes running down their spines. Their teeth are also like a sharks, or a phirana fish.
Just depends on the person's imagination. There is no right or wrong. But mermaids are definitely not sirens. The op of this post os right about that.
I kind of thought Ursula was evil on the outside because she was sad inside and that's why I chose Phyllis Smith to play Ursula in the live-action/CGI remake of "The Little Mermaid"! I also chose Francesca Angelucci Capaldi, who has long red hair and a beautiful flawless angelic voice, to play Ariel and Noah Schnapp, who is very handsome with short black hair, to play Prince Eric as if Disney brought Charlie Brown and the little red-haired girl together and as if Charlie Brown didn't slip on that puddle of punch or accidently set off the sprinkler and had his dance with the little red-haired girl! (I saw Prince Eric dancing with Ariel, you know)

Vanessa is Ursula pre-banning. Her real name is probably Vanessa. It would make most sense, then she looks more like King Triton, he had brown hair in the prequel. Triton must have exiled her so bad after the loss of his father and sisters (bc Ursula wanted the throne) she probably was cursed, vanished, and wants revenge on Triton. This using his youngest most precious daughter (a reminder of Ursula’s naive young self) to achieve the crown, kingdom, and power. That is great power of manipulation and grudge.
