the engine is actually pretty big in this one... 2.6 litre rotary is like twice the size of a 13b rx7. that turbo doesnt look any bigger than like mid 70mm

More compact, more consistent temps, shorter inlet tract resulting in better throttle response, less pressure drop across the core due to smaller size and if you are clever enough in your design even incorporate a cooling system for the cooling fluid to get lower than ambient intake temps.
Wouldn't it still need a heat exchanger for the water? Wouldn't that have to be mounted where it can get good air flow?

Using a cooling fluid to exchange the heat to the outside air.
The downside is it requires pumps, wiring, heavier and generally more complicated.
