Looking for that lo-fi sound? I compare four plugin from XLN Audio, Waves, Izotope, and Ableton stock. You will hear the lo-fi vinyl, tape sound they produce using an audio sample, so that you can decide which is best. I use the RC-20 Retro Color plugin from XLN Audio, the J37 and Abbey Roads Vinyl plugins from Waves, Vinyl from Izotope, and a few stock Ableton plugins that may provide the same sound for free! I test out the vinyl sound, tape sound, hiss, flutter and wow, crackle, and many other features of these plugins. These plugins are great for hip-hop, chill-hop, jazz, edm, and many other genres.
Don’t forget to subscribe for other great videos on music production!
The Seaboard Rise and Seaboard Grand come with many additional sounds. All these additional sounds are included with the Full version of Equator. You can purchase this for an upgrade cost at Roli.com.

💼 Want me to review your product? Let's do this!

One thing that I really like about RC-20 Retro is that the 'Noise' stops when the signal that you have it on, stops. This really helpful when you don't want your track to just sound like you threw in some vinyl crackle sound. IN my opinion, it helps things flow better.
COMPLETE_BEATS YES!!! I hate whenever I stop, I can still hear the crackles. Been using Vinyl Strip a while, and going to get RC-20 to use going on. TBH, layering little bits of these plugins probably works best so as not to sound like everyone else.
you can always automate the on and off switch to stop it as well.
Guys, and how about sidechain gating? Even in the same channel resp. rack? No need for buying any lo-fi plugins.
im not too sure about this as its been a while since i heard actual vinyl as a kid, but as far as i remember the noise would not stop in that little silence between tracks because the needle is still moving. i guess thats actually more accurate to the "original" if it doesnt stop when the signal does.
But when you sample it, you're not necessarily playing the whole part, i think our ears have grown accustomed to that as well as it never stopping 🤔
To me, the noise in RC-20 doesn't sound like it's a part of the track. It sounds and feels like it's just there, sitting on top.
But the crackles and noise are generated by the friction between the needle and the vinyl, the music itself is always clean, the plugin is doing exactly that.
RC -20 FOR me )
Damn :( they raised the price of RC-20 by a lot..
Well, you forgot Ableton's Erosion, the Frequency Shifter (which can btw easily create flutter), Bit reduction, Overdrive and Saturator. Man, there are so many combinations resp. ways to fuck up your sound in Live that you never ever need to buy a plugin for that reason. All you need is a good ear, patience and the willing to learn at least something about Ableton Live's board fx.
That's the truth! Thanks for the suggestions!
What is going on, people? Have you listened to izotope's dust by itself? It sounds atrocious! I can't even believe izotope's released something like this... electric noise and warp are ok, but dust... it sounds like a gated sample and as far as a free way to create vinyl crackling effect is considered even the free ableton option's much better.
Yeah I agree, the dust is pretty much unusable.
@@jaydy71 I guess neither of you realize that Vinyl was them beginning their journey to the products they are now know for.
It was created back in 2001 as a freebie and people liked so they kept it around as they company grew and progressed.
Love love the video production! The way you show this whole thing!!!! Amazing! Goes perfectly with your music!
I actually really like the Waves combo myself. Right now I just use a Bitwig Grid preset I made for vinyl noise (though apparently it comes with one lol by "Miles Deep"), saturator device, and modulate a freq shift device with an LFO which is pretty decent, plus Bitwig's excellent Bit-8 which is NOT a brit crusher (it emulates digital conversion/old samplers). I have to say I don't like Ableton's Crack much, and I used to use Ableton's "Vinyl" a lot before. RC-20 is still really good and has a lot of versatility on tap, too. But I have to say, your link shows the Waves ones on sale for $30 each at the time of this post, and spending $50+ gets another free plugin 👀
It's not for 32 bit😢😢. Please can anyone suggest me an alternative plugin for isotope vinyl which supports 32 bit
Ooh! Myyyy! Goodnesssss! You are wearing a Voltron T-Shirt! I used to draw it when I was a kid! It inspired me to elevate my drawing technique . The Orchestral Theme Song also intrigued me! The strings, horns, strings and electric guitars blew me away!!!
Later that year, Information Society releases "Running". That was it! Music became my passion! I enrolled in a Music Program and played the Trumpet. 3 years later, Casio and Yamaha was all that I thought of...
Thank you for your cool show!
Yup! Love Voltron! I remember watching it when I was a kid!
The RC 20 sounds like its raining where its playing the song. HMMM...
I guess that's perfect for 50% of lo-fi songs LOL!
On the RC-20 you can duck the noise aspect of the plugin - really useful
Good point!
@@SanjayC By the way, I forgot to say, really good review, thanks. I have all 3 plugins on test & I've definitely not made enough use of those features especially the wow & flutter in the J37
Several comments here are saying that Izotope's free Vinyl plug doesn't work on their systems. Just checked and the version Izotope is posting as of today (11/20/21) is still free and the requirements state: "Mac: macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra - macOS 11 Big Sur • PC: Win 8-Win 10”. Sanjay's link in the video description above *will* take you to the most current version on Vinyl. (I don't use Windows, but this version does cover the most recent Macs so I'd _assume_ it will also work for Windows.) BTW, it's also got a fresh, new interface.
Great vid Sanjay ! And you may have given me the name of my first Lo-Fi ep 09:10 "Even Lo-FIRE" LOL !
LOL! I forgot about that!
RC20: 1:05
J37/Abbey Road: 3:42
EXACTLY the video i was looking for. New sub!
Thanks so much!
Very nice track and great information!
Thanks Courtney!
Does anyone have any custom presets for rc20??
abbey roads vinyl's sounds better
Yeah, its high quality
Yeah man it really does. Most people like RC 20 but I like the Vinyl the most.
Great video as usual Sanjay! I'd love to see you review mastering plugins (unless you've already done one and I'm missing it)
I haven't made a video about mastering plugins yet. I need to do some research on them first. What do you use currently?
I've just being doing it the old fashioned way with multiple plugins but I'm thinking of investing in a mastering program like Izotope but still need to research all my options
I’ve heard good things about izotope! Need to try it myself!
Hey what's up Sanjay! I was doing some research about the RC-20 plugin and came across your video. I'm really liking the sound and the options that the RC-20 Retro Color has. Very good video review! 👍🏽
Ableton Plugins sound annoying
If anyone is wondering how to get the wobble sound with a stock plugin, it’s called a rotor cabinet 🤙
Are there anymore free ones? Izotope doesn’t work with Macs new OS
Sure does
sounds like Daniel Johnston...
Who's that?
bennynewqs story of an artist ✨👍✨
Thank you, big help!
Does this also provide compression like something Studer A800 does? Or it's simply just a saturation/distortion effect?
Nice video and just what I was looking for to get started with messing with lo-fi
Just saw on another video there's a FL-20 plugin by someone, totally free, a copied version of RC-20, not as good but free. Must mention it in the video description.
Love the track! Thanks for the info!
Awesome as usual Sanjay. Very well produced video.
Thank you Aidyba81!
Digging the Lo-Fi!
Thanks!
As of yesterday I am seeking replacements for Waves plugins. J37 and Vinyl are two that I have used frequently so thank you for this video, it is extremely helpful.
true guys use Decimotr 2 😈
Today I got RC-20 and its GOOD VINTAGEY 😍
Nice!!

RC-20 is by far the best bang for the buck for many reasons which I'm not going to explain. If I had to pick one plugin, it would have to be RC-20. For ultra retro sound, pair RC20 with Decimort and RX950. That combo will can make a sample sound like you un-earthed an ancient LP. Yo Sanjay, do you even own RC-20? I see you're using the demo version on an evaluation period.
Yeah, I waited for the sale and bought it! love it!
Also lets not forget that before you get all exciting and start parting with your money remember what the video actually shows.
The understanding and their thought process of the person making the video not the actual capabilities of the product.
Could you not add chorus-vibrato in stock ableton to get the wobble ?
Perfect as usual ! Very helpful video I loved it 👍
Thanks!
First! Love all your videos, dude!
Nice review. A few of my other favorites I use for this is Sketch Cassete, TAPE plugin for ableton by a user named ELPHNT, college drop out and high school crush on max for live. Com and last but not least ATR102 by UAD.
Great suggestions. I have to checked that ELPHNT plugin for sure! Have you tried the VHS plugin for Reaktor? If you have Reaktor, its a really nice effects plugin for free.
used to be 80, now 5 years later it's a 100
Today it’s 32
Izotope Vinyls doesn't work in Catalina :(
Izotop
No one would buy the Waves plugs just for that purpose. The price comparison is irrelevant.
Brother It’s personal can give please....🙏🏾
Awesome!
Great video. Thank you.
You’re welcome!!
Thank you for always a clean and quality content
Love the video Sanjay C!
So good!
Thanks for this review sir
You're welcome!
this video helps a lot thanks... ovi the izotope is a no brainer even if you want the others, just to have... each though apart from the stock one has it's own possible uses... I would go for the RC-20 when possible and the others later, although that's a special price which make you want to get on it as fast as you can lol.... the flutter was nicer on the rc-20 than the izotope but nicer in what way.. worst? lol this is the need for lofi... the problem with your track is the drums are too on time... it does not sound lofi at all and it is only the moving of those to make this a true lofi beat... it's this differing that makes you track unique... just how in what way and how much they are off and the way they move, then the way that makes things sound.... as for noise... I like to drift in and out of vinyl/tape sounds in to things like rain/water/wind/ambient sounds that make you not quite know which sound it is right there and then... it seems to repeat a lot but very subtle changes are made through out to help promote deeper thought...
Great tips...thanks! I'm new to lofi, actually...always learning! :-)
Great video, Sanjay C.
Thanks!
RC-20 the Best
Rc has more control
Yeah, but what about the sound quality? I sometimes feel that RC is a bit artificial. What do you think?
@@SanjayC I really liked the sound quality as well. it had body and the noise didn't feel so synthetic. the abbey road sounded wide but truly I was listening through my phone..which I think can be a good reference for sound quality (believe it or not). it is funny how we are talking about the sound quality of lo fi plugins but capturing that sound of analog components, magnets, and the law of physics is truly awesome in any way. id say the Ableton stock could suffice with a little compression and saturation. you dig? haha thanks for asking homie!
Great video thanks! Just need to know that i want to use piano on garageband seems like uno corda. How can catch similar sounds?
I have a video coming very soon with lo-fi sounds and a lo-fi piano for free! :-D
My brother I would like to know which headphome amp u are using for beyerdynamic dt 770 pro 80 ohm or 250 ohm?
I have the 250 John version of the headphones. But I don’t use a headphone amp
@@SanjayC then how the headphones getting juice bro 🎧?
Don't need it. I use my headphones with Focusrite audio interfaces and UAD audio interfaces, and I never needed a headphone amp.
Is this full beat available anywhere to listen to?
Man...I really need to get on that :-/. I have the full beat breakdown here if that helps: ua-cam.com/video/Xy-tRv3uRDg/v-deo.html

Wow...I gotta try this! Thanks for the suggestion!
Yo!! Just got RX950....I love it! Thanks again for recommending!
@@SanjayC anytime brother 🙂 happy to pass on some sauce! That in conjunction with Spitfire Audio OPW (pianos vst) has been a total blessing. Blessings from Oz
those other plugins are now $39 each!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no wait the vinyl one is $49... but still
How to fix izotope "error Microsoft ++ c" ???
Yo u have to download the most recent C++ Redistributable pack
its not all about the crackle...
😂😭😂😭
Thanks man , really helpful !
Glad it helped!

I know Tycho uses RC-20 retro. Going out VST shopping on Black Friday. It's my first year with VST Black Friday stress. :) Thanks so much!
Haha...still some good deals out there - don't forget about Soundtoys - my favorite bundle of plugins effects!
I’ve always gotten the best musical results from RC-20. With it’s filter at the bottom it’s really easy to make any sound fit into a mix. However, my all time favorite solo tape dilation is the Apex ATR-102 by UAD. On the master bus it is top 5 all time across all plugins .
I have the Ampex...its excellent! Do you use the Ampex on tracks even when you don't need the lo-fi sound?
Got a great lo-fi track? Leave a link here!
Dude, your not the real Sanjay c.You don’t even have his profile pic.
does this work in GarageBand?
Yes, all of these will work in Garageband.
