It was updates to apps like Instagram (not the iOS fix) that fixed the heating issue for most people.

Apple purposefully redesigned the iPhone to make the back easier/cheaper to replace. But that redesign makes it back glass somewhat weaker because it is no longer integrated with the chassis.

Apple weren’t sued into adding USBC - the EU told Apple they had to ad it otherwise they would not be allowed to sell it in the EU so Apple were forced to do it.
