    I have quit all social media minus UA-cam (with Premium) and all other subscriptions minus Spotify. I mainly read books or play games on my switch where I’m not being bombarded with ads … so I’m back to being a 4th grader essentially. We’ve gone full circle everybody

      Literally 100% same. UA-cam and Spotify are the only subscriptions I use, instagram being the only form of social media I sporadically participate in, usually only to chat with online friends

      At this point, to do UA-cam as a job most people need to have paid sponsors. Unless you're paying other people's bills, let people recommend unnecessary but not harmful things for ads.

    • @dangrise6182
      @dangrise6182 11 місяців тому +22

      To clarify, I have no protests against people using ads and paid sponsorship in their videos. I just think in this case, on this topic, any argument Robert makes is weakened by jumping into a sponsored sales pitch before the first minute. It's not unlike early 2000s Al Gore pontificating about climate while having a giant sized carbon foot print due to his personal life style. It should also be said that I really enjoy Robert's content, but sometimes I am in disagreement with some of his messaging.

  • @audreytheresee
    @audreytheresee 11 місяців тому +113

    adjacent to this is the oversaturation of sponsored posts and reviews, unbiased reviews of things such as makeup, for example, has suddenly become the minority and its now impossible to really gadge how reliable and good a product is because everyone is getting paid to say its good, its exhausting

    • @themariokartlick
      @themariokartlick 11 місяців тому +19

      Yeah it’s really unfortunate… even on Reddit, which I used to use to at least find honest reviews (if not good ones) feels so astroturfed and commercialized. Not to mention Twitter basically being overrun by blue check marks who just say any old shit or promote some scam and get boosted to the top no matter how much I tell the algorithm I don’t like it
      The internet sucks now lol, at least UA-cam is still alright

    I feel like this method is just another way for TikTok to not pay people. Also a HUGE red flag is when a company sends something to a creator for free but demands that they make a video on it. Never EVER accept deals like that because that could lead to both you and your viewers getting scammed.

    For some context, being a chinese company, tik tok likely has aspirations for their app to be like we chat in China, which is essentially a super app that contains literally every service under the sun (food delivery, search engine, social media, air bnb, uber). I don't know wether the American social media culture to take to it as Bytedance would like though. We seem to like some sort of clear boundaries to separate our app experiences.

    The US has no issue with monopolies. They're ONLY concerned with TikTok being owned by a Chinese company. I'm surprised how quickly Chinese soft power has become so prolific in the US which to me signals a decline in Americas power overseas. NGL I kinda love to see it 😂

    Congratulations on your sponsorship! You deserve it. I don't have a personal opinion on this subject because I don't really use TikTok. My most recent interaction there was with a "content creator" who posted one of my entire UA-cam videos on his TikTok account. I found out from one of my viewers. And this is not the first time that has happened. So, I really hate it over there.

    You probably know the enshittification cycle that Cory Doctorow laid out in one of his essays on social media companies. First, you serve the audience, selling yourself way below market value, then you serve the advertisers, then you pull the rug out from both to claw back all the revenue for yourself, then your service dies, leaving behind a dead share of the market and a few billionaires. This is unsustainable.

    Thank you for making a video on this! I thought I was losing it. It's literally become QVC with all of the livestreams of people advertising and selling cheaply made overpriced products. One of the people on the lives said it that TikTok has become the new QVC, which is ridiculous.

    "The market just isn't there yet. General consumer awareness and adoption are still low and nascent."
    I think that misses the mark entirely. The US's general attitude towards infomercials is widely negative as we've experienced it for decades through cable TV. If anything, our consumer awareness is high and strict. Successfully implementing shopping into TikTok will require more than just an attitude change towards sponsored content, though. It also requires a wider adoption of "everything" apps, such as WeChat in China, and more recently, Douyin itself.

    Hi as someone from Malaysia, tiktok shop is everywhere on my fyp especially after i searched about skincare and that corsx products always shows on my fyp.
    What i get from these people dealing with tiktok shop, they cannot say certain brands on live or other medias, if they do their account will get banned. And a few months ago, a tiktok live said they need to speak every minute if not they will get in trouble with the company or they need to show the products clearly
    Other thing that i cannot understand is how they make profit when they give a lot of sales and different prices depends on what time the customer purchased. There are times i saw the product cost RM 20+ and some got rm 5. I bought a dress originally price of RM 150+ but i got only RM 70 just because tiktok gave the sale. Tiktok is so weird for business

    E-commerce in general is such a destructive thing in general, it profuces so much more waste than in person shopping, causing higher emissions on top. Blitzscaling means we have huge businesses that have no way of being commercially viable, monopolying an industry and then increasing prices. It ruins local businesses and local economies. Leading to more people on minimum wage jobs in huge multinational companies that lobby to keep wages low. Governments lose tax revenue and society becomes ever more isolated causing anxiety and depression to rise. I understand that it is useful, but you can't escape from the reality of happens due to it.

    Tiktok shop is greatly expanding in SE Asia. There are talks about its exponential growth and potential to become one of the market leaders in e-commerce. That said, i think they’re only booming because they offer outrageous sales, cashbacks, and free deliveries over here. I’m not sure the customer base will still be there once they stop with the “promotional” stage

    I have trusted makeup since im allergic to a chemical they use in some products which can also be found in most glitters, i dont buy into skincare bs cause i follow dermatologists on here and what works for the issues i have with my skin and the only flavoured toothpaste i want that isnt mint or spearmint isn't chocolate flavoured, if you brush your teeth with velvet cake flavoured toothpaste then something is wrong with you istg, use bubblegum or strawberry, something refreshing
