Learning web development sets you up perfectly for mobile development because you already have essential developer skills like using a code editor, the command line, GitHub etc. Web development is also more challenging as you normally work with multiple coding languages. With mobile development, you're only using one programming language.
I do both web and mobile, so I recommend you start off with web then take on mobile development later. You'll be better off than a non-programmer who just tries to jump into building apps right away. Besides, most mobile apps uses databases and web services, so your knowledge as a web developer will only make it easier. Stay strong!

iOS developer here. I agree that whichever platform you prefer and are therefore motivated to learn is the one you should choose. My sense is that absolute number of Web jobs available is bigger than the number of mobile jobs available, likely because more companies need websites than need mobile apps. But there are _plenty_ of mobile jobs, so I wouldn’t use that as a factor.

Another point towards web. Compliance. While large enterprises are not “sexy” … they are the easiest to find stable consistent job stability. If that matters … web is critical as every organization over a certain size has to have a federally ADA compliant web presence. If you skip that - you risk removing this massive opportunity from prospects.

Mmm... I'm leaning more towards hybrid app dev as mobile browsers are becoming more powerful giving you access to device hardware which was mostly only available through wrapper frameworks or going native. Nice thing then is that you could then also cater for both desktop/web version (okay limited device integration) and having a mobile friendly version giving the end user a seamless experience...

I've been a web developer (Full-stack) for 10 years+ now, and if I were just starting my career, I would personally pick becoming an iOS dev today. I love web development, but there's so many technologies involved in web development, especially with a lot of available frameworks to choose from (JS frameworks, back-end frameworks, server upkeep, etc.) sometimes it's overwhelming, even for experienced devs. In the mobile dev world, in my opinion has a fewer tech to master. Apple's SDK for example has almost everything you need in one programming language (Swift). If you happen to pull 3rd party packages, it's far fewer compared to the web dev side.
