Wow! Just wow! I’ve been a graphic designer for 20+ years and this vid had my attention the whole time , I felt really like he was talking to me , awesome! I’m 42 yrs old and have been working for a company where I’m the graphic artist and this really really intrigued me , really made me understand what I need to be doing . I found myself not motivated to design anymore only cause the job is not challenging enough for me , super repetitive. This video made really re evaluate my what I’m doing , and what I should be doing , I can design my ass off , but I lack on some of the other points you mentioned. I will definitely be putting all this to work, thank you for an awesome vid 🙏🙏
I know you dropped this video over a year ago but man, this was a great insight. I'm looking to step up to a Creative Director position in the near future studying like hard for the years ahead and arming myself with an arsenal of knowledge. Thanks for the video. Helps out a great deal.
I am in my 3rd year at college purcusing a Bachelor in Fine Arts with a major in Photography. I want become a creative Director. What do you suggest i read? Where can i start?
What are some of the books you like? I love this clip - I’m not in your industry, yet I can see this applying to anyone in an Art-meets leadership-position. Thanks for the fire!
Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie was an American computer scientist. He created the C programming language and, with long-time colleague Ken Thompson, the Unix operating system and B programming language. He died same month and same year as Steve Jobs. Without Dennis Ritchie There Would Have Been No Steve Jobs. But everybody remembers Steve Jobs.
Just watched this. I’m an upcoming Associate CD at a company here in the Philippines and I found this very awesome! Thanks for all the tips you’ve given here and I can’t wait to apply it to the team. You said that it needs to be well read, can you recommend books that suits to the current industry? Thanks!
The more I improve my craft, the more I learn, the more i try to relate with others and the more I improve my personal appearance, the more insignificant I feel. Haha.
i got warm and fuzzy inside when i realized i checked all the damn boxes😌 I've learned soooo much from behind the scenes, I'll kill anything by myself "one man band but team work helps the dream work" from start to finish though"🐆" throw me fashion✔ i sew, i design, i spot trends WAY before they hit runway as ready to wear and i can style any body type, throw me photography✔ I'll do it all, the lighting set up, the background and props, the camera skills have mastered portraits, outdoor, model, fashion, product shoots, events ANYTHING i can even do video shoots from music, travel vlogs, show case shoots, transitions, b role whatever it is throw me into editing✔ i should be sponsored by adobe suite cause i feel like an advocate for them each waking day, throw me into the business possition, I'll have a company opporating professionally in 3months i just need to work on my brand now and not other peoples.. BREATH EASY AND CREATE
Hi you have mentioned all the characteristics needed to be a creative director but obviously you dont get hired just from being well read. Can you give an insight on your hiring process in regards to schools, skills, experience? Theres plenty of copywriters wanting to be creative directors but cant... what separates them? Thanks, great vids!
Kim de Pili wow. Great question!!!!!!!! I’d write it down, but, if you don’t mind, let me address it on an episode as I’m sure others are wondering the same thing. Thx!!!
I am a multi skill person and intermediate in most of the stuff I am creating. But Art centered and advancing on that topic. I am preparing portfolio for concept and visual production designer position for video games (3A studios) But I understand audio, every mediums of 2D art etc. And constantly observing and developing but I don't know how to approach as a career. I want to become a concept artist and then senior then art director and then the Creative director I want to lead the creations. I write I compose I draw I do anything creation related and really I am not bad any of that I am devoted. But I don't know how the career path is working can you lead me more on that? Nowadayd I am trying to prepare an industry level portfolio as if I had years of experience but in reality I am unemployed but really a bit better drawing than a classic junior designer. What should I do for achieving my goal efficient way?
I am a product designer/ux designer very much interested in learning how you get into being a C.D. from being a UX designer? Tips, advice...where does one start?
I really appreciate these videos so thanks alot ,, I have a question , what is the name exactly of steve book cuz I googled there and I found lots of different books of steve
So, I'm just a copywriter. I work remotely so I'm not that much involved in any other processes the company performs. Can I become a creative director? I know I have some great ideas and it's been one of my dreams for so long to be at the head of excellent advertising campaigns like those made by Playstation, Benetton and stuff. I don't know how to draw or design anything, just a copywriter. But I write scripts (I can write scripts for ads) and I have good taste (as I know so far, I've created websites from templates before and clients are happy with it).
Really interesting perspective and I definitely agree. You should know every part of the process and be able to deliver on your own to a decent standard before bringing others in. You need an MVP and then when you have that you'll know how to hire others to deliver to a higher standard with a bigger budget. If you don't have a detailed sense of what your team's output should be and what goes into it then you'll be very confused. For me, I love learning the basics of everything and understanding each piece of the puzzles importance.
My pleasure for the answer. Could you coordinate about the importance of education in taking a head position? I have my PhD and cannot find a job in any directions of design and ADV industry. I’m from Russia. Maybe, you can help me in finding a job and protected life? My gratitude for your answer.
Great energy and the deep explanation and examples helped to remember.. Great to have such channels to subscribe to build a better career.. This video helped me to realise few things and confirm few intuitions.. Thanks to you to sir, and the team who assisted you to finish it... Love and respect from indiaaa...😍😇
Katrina Liu hmmm..... there are a LOT of answers to that question, but I think it starts with hiring the right designers. Creative people like to work with creative people, so if you have this goal in mind, you may need to rearrange some people to get the culture you need to thrive... again, it’s TOUGH. :-)
Love the reality check....I suck at emotional intelligence, so many people told me I won't progress further if I don't change. Unfortunately I feel this is not something you can learn from a book , just need to change the mind set somehow. Maybe take some improv or acting lessons. Any advice, maybe a more in depth video? Thanks for the support.
Alex Popescu it’s tough!!! But, at least you know what your weakness is.... so many don’t. EQ is one of the most important qualities and it takes significant self awareness to change.... stay the course. If will help you in every aspect of your life.
this video was very informative and motivating! thank you for speaking truth and intelligence, this really got me thinking of the skills i already have and things i need to work on regarding having a carer as a creative director.
Amazing video, just discovered you and been watching all of the videos. I'd love to see a video dedicated to Emotional Intelligence. I really think I need to hear it!
Good day , I love the passion but I feel like this is a rant and I am missing the points . Your video is plain would be great to add some graphics to highlight important parts /information . Love the energy ,information and sharing .
Hey man, thank you for taking the time to try to help the community. The unnecessary ranting, screaming and mumbling in your videos is not helpful to anyone. I can't imagine that your target audience can digest this kind of energy coming from anyone. I would advise that you watch some of Chris's Do videos and study how he presents himself and communicates to his audience in his videos. Best of luck!
Hi, Viola. This video is interesting but I agree with you. Confidence is very important but honestly I disagree with the ''fear'' thing. If I needed to scare people to be listened/respected I would change workplace immediately. Actually that's one of main reasons why I moved to East Asia.
hi, i'm sorry but i can't help to not thinking that you are complaining about things that annoyed you in your current career as CEO. you don't say anything about what is the road. anything you say it's almost obvious. i think you need to say real project examples and then say what's Creative Director tasks and responsabilities and challenges form the beginning till the end. this will be much more appreciated.
You talk about confidence but you put yourself down and call yourself short when you're the national average height. In America Everything is literally built for your height.
Damn id hate to work with this guy.. he has no respect to anyone.. Talking about a guy with opinions.. .... He gave NO value at all and all this was where a: " ME ME ME-talk" This might be a bit to gritty for me - luckily we work form Denmark and not form Uganda-America.. LoL
loool but i think if someone is a creative director then he should say the truth and criticize about things happening when doing the job in order not to get to the wrong way with the project
I really appreciate this information, but it's really hard to ferret out from the unnecessary yelling. Volume doesn't equate to passion. And there's a bit of irony in the information you share and its delivery, your brand manager might want to look at this and see if this is the advertising you want out there for your brand (said with a grin). I agree it's a bit of a rambling rant - I'm wondering if you're watching too much Fox&Friends or Alex Jones. Or maybe that's the target you're going for. If not, perhaps maybe a bit more scripting beforehand or go to a Eastern Medical Practitioner and get your Liver Chi imbalance addressed.
1. Be able to produce the work
2. Be well read
3. Emotional intelligence
4. Appearance
Thanks
4. Presence ;)
I wish this was more common knowledge throughout the industry. Great video!
whole heartedly agree with point 1, talk is cheap, might as well just get a project manager
This video was fantastic, lots of topics to learn about. Stay strong!
I'm glad I ran into your videos.
Dude, LOVE the intro! I heavily believe in knowing technical knowledge if you're going to be at a CD level.
So inspirational! For the couple of minutes watching and listening, I ordered three books from amazing, Jobs, Musk and more:))
Watched all 4 parts... THIS ONE WAS THE BEST! This should have been part one because these tips are essential!
THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
Starting a new role as a Senior Creative this week and getting a lot of value from these videos - thank you!
How is it going?
Awesome video! Thank you!!

Hello. Do you recommend any book or other reference that talks about this topic? Thank you very much!

Honestly this was so helpful. I appreciate the upload! I think if you're serious to become a creative director, this series is a must watch.

I am so happy I found this video!!!!!!
Great vid and advice. Once we get to a certain level, we no longer get our hands held. Many creatives miss this kind of education.
You are a fn boss. I love your straight facts!
This video is part of my daily prayers!
Regardless if I’m confident, it fuels me to stay focused and inspires my ability to learn more!

Brandon Breon nothing beats GREAT WORK, my friend!!! Keeps producing work that inspires! You’ll get noticed and if you don’t, find a place that does!

You don't find them, they find you...

epic words !
Interesting, thanks a lot!
No problem! Reach out if you want any additional topics covered!
