  • Even though we haven't had our last frost for the season yet, my garden is growing! Let's take a walk through my zone 6 spring vegetable garden, and we'll talk about what vegetables are planted and which will be planted soon.

I love alyssum and chamomile for the garden! I hope they grow well for you in your area too. I agree, I think I’m going to move the asparagus in the fall - I just have to find the right spot!

I am planting purple sprouting broccoli this year for the first time. I was wondering if you could tell me how long between transplant and when you can start to harvest? if you can, please let me know. God bless you and your family. Duane

This is my first year growing sprouting broccoli, so I’m not really sure what to expect…if you know the variety you have, I’d do an online search and see what people recommend. I’d love to hear how it grows for you once the season is farther along!

@@HomesteadOnAPrayer thank you. Once I see how long it grows, I can let you know.

How old are the asparagus roots? I've bought 2 year roots a couple of times and they are doing great in E TN zone 7 with rocky solid clay soil. Seriously, we grow more rocks than anything else. The clay, well, it proves that tiny little roots are stronger than we understand. I imagine your roots will transplant well and continue producing for you. See my post below - lengthy as usual - but a great reminder for me and idea for you as well. By the way, I also have a jug of St John's wort still in the jug. Another reminder that I need to plant that out. So busy, so exciting!!!

I planted the asparagus as crowns a year ago, so I’m guessing they’re 2 years old - I think they were 1 year old crowns when I planted them. I hope that they transplant out well! Thank you!

Thanks for sharing. I'm sure you will figure out a great solution for the "I have too much food growing here." It's a great problem to have. If you re-locate your asparagus in the fall, consider planting them with your strawberries. We planted asparagus 12" deep in one of our raised beds this year then, we planted the strawberry roots on top. The strawberry roots may grow as deep as 12" but will not interfere with the asparagus growth. The strawberries will act as a ground cover snuffing out other plants that may interfere with the asparagus growth. As for now, the asparagus are up and the strawberries are growing well. That reminds me, We have an asparagus row in another in-ground area. It's being choked by weed pressure. We are going to weed / hoe out the area and plant more strawberries there. I'ts a great area for the combination asparagus / strawberries as that area is rarely gets any foot traffic and we don't care if the asparagus and/or strawberries completely take over the entire area. Do you have any place like that on your property? This video reminded me that we need to take care of that area and inspired me to plant more strawberries there too. Yay!!! More strawberries!!!

I do really love the idea of planting strawberries and asparagus together! Ideally I’d like to find a new area to plant them, but if I can’t find a new spot (which is likely) I may add the asparagus into my current strawberry beds. Thank you for the suggestion!

What a great idea to plant your lettuce under your broccoli! Do you think it would work with cabbage? I planted some alyssum after watching your prior videos!

I would guess it would work with cabbage too, but you might have to harvest the lettuce sooner since the cabbage isn’t as tall as the broccoli…if you try it, I’d love to hear how it works!
