    I purchased this tent because Luke recommended it and set it up December 26, 2023. I live in North Eastern Lower Michigan where it can be very cold and damp. Two weeks ago there was a true blizzard here. 15" of heavy, wet snow fell in 8 hrs. The tent bowed under the weight, yet popped right back after I brushed the snow off. Then temperatures fell below zero. When it got warmer, it rained and then froze. I have not been able to find a single leak. I've been experimenting with ventilation and air flow. When I get the balance right, moisture build up from a propane heater isn't an issue. There have been some wind gusts over 25 mph, but no long wind storms yet. Those will come soon enough. I've got it staked out with long stakes and it's holding down tight. I am much impressed at how strong the tent fabric and poles are. I'll be leaving the tent up throughout the winter if possible. I'm 6 foot tall and it is very roomy inside. BTW, the tent is set up 30 feet from the front door of my warm and cozy home. I like to test my gear, but I'm not stupid.

    Having lived in Florida most of my half-century plus and I too can attest that the cold (below 40F) here is very different. I've spent time in Colorado and the Carolinas during winters, and the humidity makes a HUGE difference. I'm sure Luke will address this, however, think of high humidity like rain. When it's warm rain on your skin, it feels refreshing and even uncomfortable because it's too warm and humid to evaporate, but cold rain will literally pull the heat out of you.

      Central Florida my entire life 54 and I’ve experienced winters, all around the globe. 28° and windy down here is just as bad as 0° anywhere else I’ve experienced it. The good part about this place is that you leave for work in two layers of clothes, a scarf and by lunch you’re in shorts and a t shirt 🎉

      I lived in the woods of the Virginia Appalachians and the sleet and 100% humidity in below freezing was awful. Some of the best snow mornings I’ve ever seen though.

    As someone that lives in Nova Scotia, I know all about winter temps and moisture in the air. I have friends from Alberta where it gets to -50 Celsius, then come here and can barely stand -10 but -25 with wind chill.. you can’t hide or dress for the moisture!
    Very best 🍻

    • @messagedeleted1922
      @messagedeleted1922 8 місяців тому +2

      You can, you need to be dressed right, windproof outer shell, proper midlayer, and this is key, your baselayer has to be tucked in, that is your thermal tights or long johns need to be tucked into your socks, your base layer shirt needs to be tucked into your pants, and this is key you need to have no way for air to enter down your collar, so a balaclava that goes down the neck and can be tucked into your shirty.
      Basically in building terms in moist air you need a sealed air barrier that has no leaks every air leak is letting in cold air which because of the moisture in it physically cools the skin more than dry cool air.
      I figured this out because I am one of those people that goes out to the beach on the windy days to watch the waves, and I started watching these outdoor youtube channels around the same time, I got into buying some of their suggestion and figured out that tucking my base layer in so that the least amount of actual skin is being "touched" directly by the cold air.
      I mean I no longer live on the coast I live farther north and with my base layer the thing Ive found I never need to do here is tuck my base layer into my socks, just having layers and the outer layer cover my boot is fine even down to below zero temps. Whereas on the coast leaving anything untucked meant that seam would start to chill that part of my body.

    So, basically a little seem sealing around the vent tie offs should be enough the solve the minor leaks. Sounds like a good deal to me. Thank for another great review.

    I'm so darn jealous of your rainy events. If I tested a tent in southern New Mexico, I'd have to leave it staked out for four months.

    • @messagedeleted1922
      @messagedeleted1922 8 місяців тому

      From experience a long term test in the sun is more damaging then a long term test in the rain. My tent was staked out for six months and the rain and snow did nothing to it, but it did fade slightly and Im pretty sure I need to give it a waterproofing treatment again.
      UV rays are killer on most synthetic fibers and the treatments for waterproofing.

    Also live a couple miles from the surf, pacific northwest. It's true. Temps often feel different depending on distance from the marine layer and it's strength. Visitors from warmer climes often complain about the cold even in the upper 50's. Another factor to consider; the psychological aspect. If it's foggy or gray skies, (ie; ugly looking outside),..people will often complain about the cold or feel it even more. That can play a roll for those camping under under even mild stress. Another good one. Cheers. 👍

    • @messagedeleted1922
      @messagedeleted1922 8 місяців тому +2

      I lived on the coast and figured at how to point out the difference between coastal cold and interior cold. First off at the same thermometer reading, so lets say 50 degrees more humid air can transfer heat away from you faster than dry air at the same thermometer reading. So its actually feels colder.
      But what I noticed is how it actually affects you, and its the air that goes down your collar and up the hems of your clothes.
      So in dry cold nice sweater will keep you warm, in wet cold the air getting down into the collar and up the hem will absolutely chill you to the bone.
      So what you do, in moist cold is make sure that your clothers are air tight, that your collar is covered by a scarf or otherwise sealed and that underneath that sweater your shirt should be tucked into your pants.
      Just wearing a scarf and tucking in your underlayer makes so much difference because you arent letting that moist cold air with its ability to tranfer heat away take it away from your skin.

    • @jimp.7286
      @jimp.7286 8 місяців тому

      Agreed on the clothing. That's why many of us around the coast always tell others in questionable weather,...to layer! One can be in direct sun on a cold day and sweating profusely while your skin is unconfortably cold facing winds. It makes for a difficult day hike or bike ride sometimes. On my mountain bike trips,..I always take a light jacket for the return trip back even if I don't use it, (more air across the skin to drive temps down),....I've learned the hard way. Cheers. @@messagedeleted1922

    The price is a good selling factor for such a nice tent, but the ability to pop a stove in it AND a chair you can sit in by the fire inside is a very understated advantage. For Winter use at least, this tent is a buy.

    Just a point and with respect: during my training I was taught that a vital component of communication is done through the eyes and the recipient being able to see your eyes. Wearing dark sunglasses, (even as in this video it's dusk), is a deterrent to assessing the veracity of the speaker. Please don't be offended Luke, it's just some friendly input.

    You turned me onto this tent. I’ve been looking at the bigger version. At 6’ the smaller is tight with a stove. I’d like some room to sit back and relax. Thinking that larger one will provide that. If I decided to do a couple nights the second room could store my gear.

    Id not be concerned at all regarding the minor leaks with that tent, nothing a bit of seam sealant couldn't fix..very impressive performance from the tent in my opinion. I own several Naturehike tents & all are extremely waterproof,the only slight concerns i have with mine are the strength or potential lack of strength of the poles, personally ive never had a pole break but i do know numerous people who have had pole failure with Naturehike tents but for the price they are very good shelters in my opinion.

    This & all your other product "tests" are real in every sense of the word, out in Mother Natures weather, not just a backyard weather event.
    Getting up & going outside in bad weather to film what the tent/weather were actually like took a lot of your time, effort, & equipment - no shortcuts.
    Tests like this are WHAT separates your channel from all other youtube "Review" channels.
    PLease consider testing this tent in bad weather while using a stove, to see how well or poorly it does in retaining heat & how much or how little condensation takes place. I'm thinking the tent is sorely in need of a floor.
    Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada.

    I need another tent like I need a hole in the... ;) But since Luke's positive recs = sold out product and/or prices up 25%, it might be prudent to pick one up now! 😂 BTW, I see it at $299 plus a $30 off coupon on Amzn, now. Thanks, Luke, from Seattle!

    Thanks for such a detailed test and review. Is it normal for 4-season tents not to have a floor? I would have thought otherwise.

    Have you thought about a rain gauge to setup next to the tent, for a read on how much rain has actually hit it?

  • @TheXanthoman

    2 problems i see with this test
    1. When you have a tarp or footprint sticking out past the outer layer of the tent , that causes water to pool up under the inner .
    2. Not sleeping in the tent in the tent during these conditions doesnt take into account the condesation factor during these conditions .
    3. I agree , it seems like a great for the money . That being said once naturehike gets wind of this review , it wouldnt suprize me if they jack the price . Just sayin

    Hey I think they got the new update version of this tent, called SHAN HE solo, which is only 2.24kg total. which is light enough for hiking as a 2 person tent.

    Can't recommend that tent enough, I've used it in hot temps in Spain and 50mph winds and 0°c and I am very impressed.
    I do motocamping and the pack size is ideal for motorcycling.

    Luke, every time you’ve done a Nature Hike review, the price immediately jumped up within the week. Across the board I’ve seen huge price jumps. Just a FYI. But I do love the reviews.

    Humidity is such a devil.. I’ve found the same with heat. I lived in Texas where the temps were in the triple digits but without humidity but I’ve also lived in Florida where temps would be only in the upper 80’s with high humidity.. and to me it felt way hotter in Florida. 😂

    Luke, I took screenshots of the critical information that I posted moments ago about the Naturehike Massif tent right after I hit the "Comment" button. I was trying to alert potential buyers to an existing and documented problem with the tent in heavy snowfall conditions. Minutes later, I no longer see those comments here--are you now deleting such comments? If so, it would seem to me that your channel has lost it authenticity and value to (perhaps former) views such as me. If UA-cam itself, or some other entity, is removing such comments, then you should know about it!

      There's a bot lurking the channel, probably from one of these ChinaCo. companies he keeps promoting, that's reporting some people posts if they say the wrong thing. For me, if I mention any brand or retailer or use a dollar sign in any post it'll get deleted in seconds. I forgot to add, that given the context of your post that was deleted, it wouldn't surprise me if this particular brand is the one responsible, which has actually been my suspicion.

    I haven't had mine in rain yet. Only a light snow. I'm curious about it leaking at the stove jack. I'm assuming no leaks at the jack? Do you think a silicone water proofing at the vent peaks would work or perhaps additional seam tape?

    I have a friend who lives in Colorado. He moved down to Oklahoma, and we worked together for a couple of years. He told me he had never lived in a place where it was so cold in the winter and hot in the summer. People who have not experienced humidity levels as high as we get they are completely astounded.

    I was reading Amazon reviews on the 4 person version of this tent and a few reviews had issues with the strength of the poles under heavy snow and the stove jack burning. I was about to buy this tent but for about one to two hundred dollars more I can buy a higher quality tent.

    Two questions. One could you tell if it leaked any around the stove jack? I know you don't sleep there just curious. And two is the myth/saying true or not. I was always told to never touch the sides of the tent when it's wet or raining because it will cause it to start leaking? I know you don't want to touch them much in general. Just wasn't sure if the what I was always told is true or not. Or if it is just certain kinds of materials that would do it or not.

    I have the Mongar 2, and it’s done well in SE Texas thunderstorms. PS - do you sleep in these tents during your tests, or stay in your warm cabin and monitor it remotely? Asking for a friend.

    Do you know anything about the natures hike kota? I was going to buy the bigger version of the tent in this video on Amazon but they offer an even bigger version called the kota. Problem is that it’s not listed on natures hike website so I wasn’t sure if I should buy it or not. Plus they wanted 80 dollars less. Now they are pricing them both at 400 on Amazon. Makes me leery that they offer a 6 person tent for the same price as a 4 and the day before it was offered for$319.
