So glad I found you lol. I just finished my Ph.D. in Africana Studies and accepted a position teaching American Studies at a high school. Excited to watch your videos!
Okay, first of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I hope you’ll be celebrating all summer long because you deserve it. Second, congratulations on your new position! I can’t wait to see you document this journey:):)
This is such a great video! You’re an amazing teacher-I hope my future students will like me as much as they like you! I watched this video because I’ve always wanted to be a high school humanities teacher. However, I’m a little nervous about how the teen students will act. Does it ever get hard to deal with behaviour? Do they get rebellious or mean? I love the content and structure of high school, but I definitely love teaching little kids, like in elementary. Do you know a lot about the differences between both? What makes a good secondary teacher? Thank you for your time!! :)
I’m so glad you enjoyed this video. to be honest, I didn’t have a single student be mean to me my first year. I had one student during the fall semester who was super resistant to work and learning in my class. I couldn’t crack his shell to open up, but I know he has a pretty hard life outside of school and didn’t take his resistance personally. I just tried the best I could with him. But he was never mean to me about it. At least in my opinion. I really suggest reading the book “pedagogy of the oppressed” by Paulo Freire. It really encapsulates my personal teaching style in that I approach my students as intelligent and seasoned humans beings first and learners second. And I give them a lot of autonomy and leadership in my class. They lead discussion, they lead projects, they lead activities. I just present topics and information and facilitate and provoke them to dig deeper. Ask for their opinions and create a space they feel safe sharing in. I think that when students don’t sense the power stuggle/dynamic between students and teacher, they behave better because there’s nothing for them to resist, in a sense. I hope this helps :)
Oh I don’t know is just that standard answer you always get when asking anything, absolutely anything, in high school. I guess it’s the automatic response teachers get, just as parents must be getting “leave me alone” the whole day lol. In my case, I continuously repeat “in full sentences please” 😂😂
Omg. This is the first video I watch from you and already am in love. I graduated with a bachelors in Biology and a minor in Chicano Latino Studies and always go back and forth about getting a masters in teaching. I was an Instructional Assistant for over 10 years so I know how hard this job is but I know how rewarding it can be. Also, I too love the Parasite anime.
I’m so sorry for getting back to you so late! I’m so glad you like these videos, and can understand how challenging it can be. You have so much experience I can’t imagine the stories you have to tell!
This has been my first year as a high school teacher/coach. I teach English IV to the senior class, and coach football and baseball. We have 1 month left and It's a bittersweet feeling. I am going to miss my first class so much, but i'm very excited to see where they end up in the next five years. My students are going to achieve greatness. I really enjoyed watching your video. By the way, how did your first year go, and how much do you miss your first class?
Omg yes this is exactly what I’ve been looking for on teachertube. Grateful to have found you!
Yes I specifically remember watching chucky at either 3 or 4….like wtf parents! I had bad dreams FOR YEARS!
