  • Matt Chandler, pastor of The Village church in Flower Mound, Texas talks with Christian about suffering and having a healthy fear of the Lord. Matt relates his own experience with brain cancer, chemotherapy, marriage issues and the sometimes terrible things he’s witnessed as a pastor. Christian and Matt explore some of the not-so-helpful platitudes Christians say to each other and how to honor God and each other in a culture with little honor.

I lost my 26yr old son Nov. 2022 from Fentanyl overdose. One thing I know for sure is that God was definitely near so so near during that time and still has been for the past 10 months. I still grieve because I love my son but God comforts me every single time. I don't question why anymore because I trust God and His Sovereignty and have personally experienced Him drawing near to me when I draw near to Him. He is Worthy to be trusted even in this loss

I've always hated that "God is teaching me something..." has always been what people default to, mostly because I dont know what I'm learning and I get frustrated because I'm tired of learning. I just want peace. And that's exactly where God wanted me to be. For months now, He has been telling me over and over that He is with me and I've cried over it, and I even hated that that was the only reply. After many "I am with you"s, I learned something about me and him....I am shivering in fear and He's trying to calm me down by letting me know that He is near. It's such a unique time rn in my life but if I was honest, God is closer to me now more than ever. I'm still in season so please continue to pray for me. Good talk. 👌

50:15 great question to bring up and Matt's response, examples. What cultivates honor towards others? A willingness to submit to authority? How do we die to ourselves, and find contentment in humility?
1:03:25 been forming this idea recently that the point of the mystery of God's sovereignty and man's choice is trust. Period. Not Calvisnim or Arminianism but let's call it 'Trustism' or simply 'faith.' Matt summarized that with the Job example: "Trust that I'm good" when you don't know. Problem is as humans our ego wants to know what we'll never understand. I think this is because this knowledge and understanding can make us feel much more in control than the tension and discomfort of leaning into trust. It is also this trust and love that is the joy the soul seeks after and the adventure outside of the ego/flesh into the realm of the Spirit. The demands of trust in the moment can be guided by whether we're guided by a relationship with God (Spirit) or not, to let go or to go, to wait or to act, to listen or to speak, etc. The relationship should be dictating our lives, not some fixed knowledge or understanding, and that requires... trust.
