You see a lot of emaciated horses, especially at tourist facilities, in third world countries sadly. I'm not excusing the behavior of this family or the barn owners because even a non-horsey person could see that those horses are skinny, I just wanted to say I have found that third world countries have a much higher amount of skinny horses, especially if the natural climate is dry or desert like. A lot of it is the result of socio-economic issues, poor environment, and lack of access to knowledge and/or proper training.

    • @mune3488

Definitely true. I'm from the Philippines myself, lived there my whole life as a half english half filipino citizen... It's mostly the lack of knowledge and the ignorance that many have. Such as "well this is how I was taught so of course it's right. You dont know anything" I've boarded my horse at certain locations that don't have the same issue as tourist attractions utilizing horses, mostly because of the large wage gap. Even still... because of the ignorance it's very easy for horses, be it in a relatively poor or wealthy environment to be abused and neglected. Had an OTTB before I moved to Europe, who was starved and mistreated by my trainer for "training". He's under the care of someone else now. But I digress, third world countries have a serious issue with horsemanship, rich or otherwise. Stables that have significant fame have been known to send unwanted/not bought horses to butchers after some time. Emaciated and abused horses are seen absolutely everywhere.

Thank you for bringing this up. In punjab where I live and was born and brought up(you'll see my fat ass comment up there) horses are like a religion. In gurbani(sacred, to put it simply) , there is even a mention (multiple times, actually)of horses. Marwaris, Nukras, Majukhes(technically a kind of Marwari only, but I felt the need to mention them separately since they are quite special) they are like their owners prized possessions and are treated as such, with love, respect and reverence. so you are right. This is disrespect. The white horse in the start was pretty damn emaciated, but I think it was a nukra. the fact that its neck was down and it was not snorting and reacting aggressively to a stranger making so much noise in its stall is (if it is a nukra) is worrisome, because they are practically a religion that is how much people a dore them especially in the village and they know it. they're punjabi horses with a punjabi attitude, they're proud(hence they naturally hold their heads high) and they stab, or rather, kick/bite as a warning. they are also pretty much fearless, so they are often used in the cavalry. to see one(again only if I am correct, because I really can't tell) being such a pushover is heartbreaking.

My mother wore improper footwear when on a recently gelded ex-racehorse (that she later got rid of because she couldn't control the horse, because racehorses don't even get proper training)
She got her foot caught in the stirrup and was dragged. She managed to keep hold of the harness and that gave her enough control that she was only dragged for a few seconds.
But she suffered severe injuries. Multiple bruised organs in her abdomen area, fractured ribs, and a twisted ankle. Being dragged by a horse is no joke.

Story time! I previously showed at State Breed shows and rode for 15ish years. I now volunteer from time to time and so many students don't know why there is in fact a correct way to hold their reins. I always tell people why what they are doing is right/wrong because it helps get the point across better. there was an individual who was 14-15? and she lowkey argued with me about what proper rein position looks like. (this was at a camp where youth bring their own horses) and I was so taken aback since any instructor worth their salt always starts with the basics (hands, heels, hips, eyes/head). To add to your bit on going to "good" lesson barns I agree completely. There isnt anywhere local for me (currently horseless) to take lessons where I feel that I would actually get anything out of it/I question the horse's care.

It is heartbreaking to see that this family is more than likely exploiting their children for money & recognition. As you had mentioned, they clearly have money, it disturbs me to know that they couldn’t choose a facility that actually cares for their visitors safety, as well as caring for the horses in a safe environment.
What really annoys me is the fact that the parents have no respect for the safety of their children, they are literally seen wearing helmets but then let their daughter mount a horse without one on. I get that this facility may be struggling with funding, food and water for their horses but surely they should focus on rehabilitating their horses & nursing them back to health before providing “lessons”. Can I just add that no where in this video is a trained adult/instructor, instead there is a child that more than likely has no idea what she is meant to do.
Again, this just seems like another one of those families that are exploiting their children for money, it needs to stop..

I just want to rant abt this.
I work at a pretty big infamous company
99% of our horses are in very good health, good shape. They are currently going through a series of hoof chipping as we had to change their food for a while and it’s been SUPER wet.
    But that’s not the point.
We have this one horse who looks like the bay in this video.
He’s not underfed. He eats fine. But he keeps losing weight. The weight he does have is muscle. Like if you only looked at that horses legs you’d probably have no idea the rest of him is so thin. You can SEE his ribs.
And it’s like no one really wants to do anything about it.
They still ride him. Constantly. He’s used in shows (Friday-Sunday usually), he gets practice, he gets worked, almost every day that he’s at the facility. And a lot of people are telling me
“Well he needs to work to gain muscle.”
And I want to hit them because AS A THIN PERSON, you need to put WEIGHT on to turn it into MUSCLE. He needs help. One girl suggests he has early on cushings of some sort (because he’s a fairly young horse but he EATS. He always has an appetite). But it’s like. No one had said “just give him a bunch more food”. No one has tried to look into it vet wise. And I understand why. As I said I work for a company. Even the person in charge of the horses has a boss. And if they don’t give him the money to do it he can’t. But god damn it I just wish they’d stop riding him. Even two or three weeks. Just give him time to build something up. Every touch hurts him if it’s not your hands and even then. He’s such a sweet and good horse with so much personality and is good at his work. But he deserves better than this. He deserves weight. And for it to be more than just me to want that for him.

I’d love for you to go over the ethics of lesson barns. Some are great, but I’d say most overwork their horses (4+ lessons a day 6-7 days a week), and just the fact that when your income depends on the horses being used, you’re more likely to compromise the animal’s comfort/well-being rather than let your business go under

Girllll! Wth was that! My head hurts now! And I am absolutely sick of ppl just getting animals an stuff and not doing the proper research as you said! I am a octopus keeper and I advocate all the time not to get one bc you can or they are fun! Ppl can barley keep a saltwater tank they don’t need to abuse animals for entertainment or to look cool! It’s beyond frustrating and I’m to the point where I’m just gonna be a dick about it tbh! I also showed horses all my life and had to take a break from the horse world bc of the idiots! I like to call ppl who don’t know shit or can’t ride a yahoo! Lol

The barn I go to for lessons has you walk them around to graze or put them in the pastures to run around after. It has both an inside and outside arena and plenty of balls and toys for the horses. My instructor also personally checks and makes sure the hooves are taken care of before you get on the horse.

Sigh. These situations with facilities that treat horses like machines, and the unfortunate greed that has driven so many families to put their kids in danger (or in more infamous cases to abuse their kids for views like certain infamous family channels that are now erased from UA-cam) - all of this has created such a terrible situation for the future of the beautiful horses that we love. Ugh.

i started riding around 12 at this barn by my house. They were like a back yard barn but had a lot of riders. I started to notice they would over work horses, have us ride lame horses, over crowded arenas, hit the horses etc and i convinced my mom to switch barns. Now i go to a better barn with a professional trainer and it’s the same price. It’s like 40 more minutes away but it’s so worth it.

i had a similar experience, it wasnt exactly a backyard barn but it was somewhat close. they had lots of horses and lots of riders but too many little kids. it was more of a zoo than a barn- they had a zebra, giant turtles, cows, pigs, cats, (then again loke every barn has cats) dogs, yeah it was insane. i moved after riding for a few months there, after having to emergency dismount (no injuries thankfully) from a horse that was way too crazy for me, a beginner, to ride, and also nearly getting thrown from a sassy and tired mare. (i also was jumping way too soon.) now im at a very nice barn, and so glad i moved!

Although I enjoy what you do for the Equestrian community, I think learning about socio-economics and really taking a step further into why people do what they do is important. You mentioned how you don’t punch down, which is what everybody should avoid doing, but it’s also important to learn more about sociology. For instance, this video can come off as a little insensitive in some parts. The criticism of the tack room makes no sense to me because it looks like an average tack room at a busy barn. You also liked a comment in which someone was sardonically mentioning the older daughter’s outfit in which the ONLY REASON that it should be mentioned in poor preparation for riding. You have a tight knit community here, I understand. But this also means it’s important to learn your community and beyond it so as to accurately portray stories.
Criticism is important. You do a great job in educating and saying what you want to say. But, it is also important to be intersectional and think beyond the video at hand. Peace and love.

    • @RaleighLink

All of my videos are insensitive, the point of my video is to analyze rights and wrongs not worry about how people feel. Poking fun or making light hearted jokes or criticisms is part of every video to lighten the mood. Tbh I appreciate your feedback but people are way too sensitive.❤️

    • @kairapayen
      @kairapayen 2 роки тому

@@RaleighLink See, I would argue the opposite. I think people can really be mean while trying to back up the idea that “people are too sensitive nowadays” ideology. I would hope to see in the future that you don’t like comments that openly slut shame the daughter for what she’s wearing. I was just hoping you’d be an advocate for people as well as animals because that’s a very important part of being a veterinarian. Ignorant people are part of the job and if you can’t control your biases, then I only wish you luck.

@@RaleighLink hey ik this is a kind of old comment but I felt very similarly to op about alot of stuff - specifically about the comment you liked :( I had to think about what was so off-putting about it n I think it's cause while yes, it's very important to call out animal exploitation when it's there and I agree that this family have absolutely made a conscious choice to support abusive practices, but the comment about the daughters clothing choices was nothing to do with this and was instead just reinforcing harmful stereotypes about a culture that you admitted you knew nothing about multiple times. There's a massive difference between light hearted jokes and criticism and in this case, supporting a comment that could be argued as purely xenophobia. When your audience is as large as your own I feel like you have a responsibility to not encourage that kind of opinion and as someone that is half Asian, I feel very upset that you would agree with that sort of thing, and then follow that up by essentially saying that people are too sensitive.. that kind of language is the rhetoric that is used to justify hatred and prejudice and its really frustrating for you to say that being angry at xenophobic arguments isn't valid. I don't believe you as a white person has a place to say whether or not people are being sensitive about language that is frequently used against us, and its really disappointing to see as a long time viewer.

@@kairapayen yeah I was starting to feel a little weird about her when the whole 'people are too sensitive' line started coming up in her videos ;-; don't know any other equestrians that really talks about the problems in the industry like Raeleigh does -- from what I've seen from this community is that since its kind of an expensive hobby in both economic and social terms, its a rare find to see an equestrian (at least online) that speaks out against issues in the world - usually cause they aren't in a position where they have to, and doing so would lose them revenue most likely :/ I'd love to find a creator that actually thinks properly but they're few n far between :))

I rode at a backyard place for a while and new it was wrong but I grew to close with the instructor and we rode in a small round pen in front of someone’s house and the stalls were like little tins. I had to get over the fact that I might hurt my instructors feeling to better myself as a rider and I switched barns and it was the best rescission I’ve ever made.
