Oh it’s just so disappointing. Sophie deserves so much better than constantly having green and inexperienced horses. They’re always showing Sophie’s fails in thumbnails and using them for clickbait, and then when Sophie does something really well they use Gaby’s achievements as bait. I just find it so unfair it’s like Sophie’s just on the sidelines and fodder for bait and I really want to see HER journey because she’s conquering so much anxiety sometimes. I hope they do better for her, set her up to succeed rather than to fail.

In this situation Sophie isn't a bad kid, she just has no idea what she's doing so it falls on the parents to make the right choices. Sophie needs a good trainer, a 12+yr old horse, tall enough for her, and has had plenty of experience to accommodate a rider who is learning and off-balanced. I was sincerely hoping they would get her an ex-lesson horse or something. She can barley sit in the saddle properly and keep herself balanced right now, so they go out and get her a 5yr race horse??? I'm speechless I really am. Odd comparison but this is no different than a young, first time dog owner getting a malinois instead of say a Lab, not knowing how to train it then coming home to your house torn up and thinking to yourself "where did I go wrong? I love this dog but I just can't control it, maybe I'm just a bad owner". Like no, you're just not ready for that dog, get a more beginner friendly breed

Well said. There’s a reason Gabby’s progression has been so much smoother than Sophie’s and it is essentially rooted in the way she began. With a true kick-along, bombproof, forgiving, laid back and confidence giving little horse.
That foundation makes all the difference.
I suspect they’re trying to buy Sophie a horse that will fulfil her jumper ambition so she doesn’t feel left behind, but there’s no way for her to learn when she’s constantly overhorsed.

If you want me to go into detail on this I can or you can take my word. I have absolutely nothing to gain by saying any of this. If you are going to lie about things then expect to be called out and that is what I have done and as a medical student I proved it.

This horse is an Ottb! Classic under muscle development, hollow, and under fed from racing they keep them extra light. My ottb looked just like this, and acted calm just like his until he got proper food in him and got more fit. Turned into a basket case. And he was 15 and 10 years off the track! Ottb are under developed and hollow going, this is a recipe for back issues and pain and anxiety. They are also notoriously stiff on the right side and have trouble bending in that direction and right lead pick up. I was 12 when I got him and the only thing that saved us was my dedication and excellent trainer who helped teach me to develop his muscles and loosen him up with classical dressage foundation training like seen on ArttoRide channel, who call starts with in hand work and lunging. This horse should be ridden very lightly until his top line gets developed. Those methods are basically what HAS to be done in order to get these horses using their bodies correctly by getting them strong and relaxed enough to do so, and not just forcing them in frames with tricky riding or worse rollkur methods that we even see in western world. It’s every horse owners responsibility to make sure their horse has a top line and know how to develop it and keep it that way so he can optimally carry a rider and move his body. Link could probably go for years more and change his attitude about being ridden if his top line got developed better, when I see him in videos I also see that he is not working over his back well. Some horses manifest symptoms by being lazy, others like my ottb he was high anxiety.

Omg so true. So many OTTBs are purchased are skinny, calm, “more woah than go” types. I love OTTBs but am the first to say they generally don’t make good beginning or novice horses until they are significantly retrained at least. If you buy a skinny under developed TB, you have no idea what their personality will actually be in good condition.
You know what they say… green and green makes black and blue

Right!! My very first lease horse happened to be an OTTB (my trainer's uncle works on a track so she gets his retired horses) and he was about 16-17 and I rode him into his 20s. He had just recently completely calmed down, as in didn't pull any speed demons anymore.
He is extremely large boned for a thoroughbred, and packs on muscle and weight. He was always known as the pet at the track because of his demeanor, but had those energy spurts when younger.
When I learned on him, he was incredibly safe because he was my trainer's only horse at the time, and so so honest. Have never seen another horse as honest as him. He is as bomb proof as they come and would canter for days. He would get very heavy on the forehand and show a lack of balance, but my trainer knew him from inside to out and knew which riders could work with his riding style. Although it took 6 months to canter courses with him (because I couldn't stop him at the canter due to my inexperience and his tendency to hang onto the bit) he was incredibly safe and the best to learn on.
He took me from learning how to post the trot to 2'9 double clears! but you see, he had done all of this before, and my trainer was VERY careful with our pace in progressing.
Mentioning all of the above puts into perspective this situation. At this point in time, Sophie needs a horse she can, as everyone is stating, learn on. A horse she can make mistakes on that will not affect the horse. That is just not the case here, I am curious to see how this progresses.
thanks so much for reading!! his name was Winnie, and I still see him almost everyday :) currently with a 14 yr old ottb Buck who came to me as a free lease problem horse but has now come with me to just about every show my last years of high school getting me the most ribbons❤️❤️ i just love these horses.

I think Gabby is more invested in horses than the rest of the family. She would probably take every opportunity to ride and take lessons, go to clinics, workshops, watches videos to improve and actually applies corrections to herself.
I'm not sure if Sophie is going to be a lifetime horse owner. And that's not a dig. It's perfectly okay because the horse crazy phase is super common. Some kids take lessons and show all throughout their school careers, then slowly lose interest and phase it out of their lives.
I feel bad for Sophie though, I see myself at that age. Heavier than most other riders in my age group, behind on skills, with no one properly guiding me toward improvement. Or providing constructive criticism that would help me gain better balance and strength so I could be better for my horse.
I think Laura speaks for other people most of the time in these vlogs and we don't get to hear Sophie's actual true thoughts. It aggravates me. She interrupts and talks over them and infuses her own opinion in the middle of their sentences.
I actually really would have liked to see Sophie lease Denver for the summer. I almost guarantee improvements would be clearly visible by the end of the season.
Riding green horses while being inexperienced and unbalanced means you end up riding defensively. It throws the horse off, is uncomfortable, and can make for really unenjoyable rides for both human and equine.
Chance needs a full conditioning program, learning how to carry himself and building proper muscle... And Sophie does too. (I don't mean weight loss... I mean conditioning. She doesn't have to lose a single ounce to be conditioned and have good balance. She just needs to know how to use her body... just like Chance. She shouldn't be riding him til both those things happen. Everyone, especially kids, should learn how to be happy just having a relationship with their horse from the ground. Anything else is extra. Like, I mean Sophie going for long hand walks out on the trails, around the farm property, entering in-hand trail classes and other fun competitions.... really getting to know her horse and building an excellent foundation with him while a qualified trainer coaches her through conditioning him, teaching her how to watch his movement and the basics of equine biomechanics.

I did recently hear Laura say that the girls are good riders because they always get ribbons at local shows.
I'm not knocking local schooling shows. They are excellent experience and perfect for beginners and those that don't want to ride the circuit for points or get tangled up with all the nonsense and sour personalities that accompany rated shows. Not everyone has to have goals of Maclay, medal finals, WEF, Devon, HITS.... And most can't afford those (I certainly couldn't. I catch-rode ponies and horses when the opportunities presented themselves, groomed, hung around barns, was a stable hand from ages 8 to 21, soaking up anything from hunters to cutters....)
      I love local schooling shows
But.... local shows are largely just exhibitions and not a good way to truly judge the level of riders. Just because someone gets a ribbon in a local backyard show, does not mean they are experienced, capable riders.
It's fine even if an equestrian **never** wants to compete.... but they should always want to be better... for their horse. There is so much nuance and skill and soft understanding that goes into riding well. I don't even care if someone comes home from their short stirrup class with a big honkin' trophy... there's still room for improvement both on and off the horse.

I show my horses but I do it just for fun with my horse and always do my best make sure that they’re happy and comfortable in competition. They should not be showing this horse until he gets more experience and training and until Sophie becomes more experienced. She needs a schoolmaster to keep her safe, not a green OTTB. I took lessons at a barn for about a year in middle school as a complete beginner. They would put me on a different horse each lesson and most of them were thoroughbreds. It was a terrible time, and it got to the point where I was falling off almost every lesson. Eventually, the last fall shattered my elbow and I’ve never rode since. There was only one horse that I ever felt truly comfortable on, and he was older and a different breed. Looking back, I so wish that my barn would’ve used more horses like that to help train new riders, and maybe I would still be riding today.

Sophie needs a horse that can teach her, this horse is only going to need teaching since it’s green broke… It took me years to get my first 9 year old, y-e-a-r-s. I was always stuck with late teens and early twenty’s my first 10 years of riding. And it paid off, it really did. Those horses can teach you the ways before moving on to some project that needs work the rider doesn’t have. It bothers me because Laura says “He’s a once in a lifetime horse.” Yes, maybe… but it’s not accurate, he’s not going to get the job done and set Sophie up for what she needs. I could be wrong, thanks for reading! I do love their channel and enjoy updates but I wish Laura would consider maybe a horse in it’s teens?

My current horse is a 5yo OTTB. I am an intermediate-advanced rider. My last horse was also a 5yo OTTB, I trained him and he did great but unfortunately passed away due to the ill guidance of my trainer at the time and I really didn’t know better. I was naive and I trusted this person. Your videos and that loss has taught me so much on what is right and wrong in the sport.
I lost my horse when I was 17/18. I am currently 24 and have been riding on and off since because it was difficult to get back into the horse world after all that trauma.
But with my new horse, I am not inexperienced just out of practice and shape. Therefore I am taking my time with this horse. I haven’t even cantered him yet because I know neither of us are ready for it. My current trainer is everything I could ask for.
I plan on focusing on flatwork and groundwork for at least the next year while I get in shape.
I don’t think Sophie should be put in these positions because she’s just going to hurt herself.
I was advanced when I had my first horse and he still gave me injuries that I continue to suffer from.

Lord have mercy, I haven’t watched this boy being ridden but from what they’ve said he a very calm thouroughbred. Ok sure I could believe that, the thouroughbred we have now has always been extremely calm, the problem is that this horse will lack the training that a horse for Sophie needs and it is a 5 year old so due to Sophie being so unbalanced on the horse it could cause major back issues down the line for this horse that can’t be changed by regular chirp appointments. They most likely will want to jump this horse which if Sophie hasn’t immensely improved in her jumping from the last I saw of them will just be a train wreck, the horse hasn’t had near enough training to go over jump without a hitch, there will be many over jumps, refuses, and other reactions down the line which from what we’ve seen Sophie really hasn’t been taught and doesn’t have the muscle to handle it properly. Not only will this be bad for Sophie but it could be detrimental for the horse, it’ll only take one bad situation to completely traumatize a horse, which is what good trainers want to avoid at all costs when it comes to green horses, you never want to push them too far, this family has never known where the line for “pushing them too far” is until that lines about twenty feet behind them and I’m afraid it will happen with this horse as well.

I completely agree they haven’t done any proper pole work and dressage training with that horse, he easily could’ve been just fine and him and Gabby would’ve been a better team if they would just do rides completely on the flat more often and actually learn how to do things other than jumping. I used to do hunters but just never found enjoyment in it so I switched to western riding, specifically ranch riding which is pretty much all flat work and there’s really nothing boring about it for the horse or rider as long as you have some variety in the flat training so “being bored” should never even be thought of as an excuse for horse or rider.

I’m especially worried that once chance begins to gain weight and get fit he may begin to have much more energy and possibly be hard to handle for Sophie. I can say from experience that when I first got my thoroughbred he was pretty relaxed and laid back rarely every needing lunged and such. I watched her mother interfere with her lesson, constantly making comments while the instructor tried to do his job. I kept asking myself why Laura is buying green horses and ponies for an inexperienced and green rider. I'm also marveling over how I've already seen them in 3 different facilities. They seem to move around often. One indoor looked a bit rustic, another was one of those fabric on metal frame arenas and the other was a gorgeous state of the art arena and barn. It makes me wonder why they have moved so often in such a relatively short time. I learned to ride from a horrible riding facility that would put me on this horse named Rocky. He always bucked and I was the only student with enough experience to “handle” him (aka, fall with grace). I learned quickly how to work with horses that were stressed and/or poorly trained.
My very first horse was a OTTB I leased from a friend. This horse was green, but with my previous riding experiences, I didn’t think it was a big deal. Looking back now, almost 10 years later, I’m shocked I didn’t have any major injuries with this horse. She had a massive cribbing problem (PTSD from racing and poor treatment no doubt), had zero ground manners and zero experience with casual riding. I wasn’t a beginner rider when I got her, but in no way was I experienced either. That mare taught me so much, and I loved her to death, but I was oblivious to all the dangerous situations I put myself in.
Overall, that horse was such a blessing for me. She had a heart of gold and would always look out for me whenever we rode. But there were a lot of struggles and so many close calls. I feel like Laura lives vicariously through her older daughter and you can see it through the thumbnails between each daughter and just the amount that they give and do for the older daughter compared to Sophie when it comes to Horses. Also not letting Sophia truly answer the questions about what she wanted to do with the horse and letting that be Sophia’s answer. She had to interrupt and almost guide her and then finish the answer for her. Sophia clearly said she wanted to do jumpers and I had seen in previous videos that she really enjoyed doing that at a show and the mother says that she doesn’t really want to show but I truly think that she does and the mother is just downplaying what Sophia wants to do. I just wish that they would realize that they need an instructor that is much more highly educated in balance position alignment. Not just saying someone who teaches basics because they need more than just the basics and fundamentals. They have missed so much of that that bad habits have been created and not fixed time and time again and they just keep slightly mentioning the balance and position issues with both kids and then glaze over them or mention them once or twice in a lesson and then that’s it. They need someone who is experienced and educated in the seat and biomechanics and that is passionate about teaching their students these things in every lesson and making sure that anytime something is going wrong or slightly incorrect, that it is addressed and worked on at every moment that some thing is incorrect or going wrong. They need someone that is going to be able to use techniques and exercises to help them adjust and fix things but also teach them why. Not just threaten them with no stirrups or putting a crop under their thumb is to keep their hands correct. That is not enough and this instructor that they have is just not enough for the students and the other ones at the barn for that matter. So many of the riders in their group lessons have the exact same issues and you can see that in their videos of the group lessons. It’s a shame that there aren’t more regulations for being able to teach and being able to teach beginners of all ages especially.

So I got a new trainer and finally found an amazing one it took years but I’m progressing slowly!!

the comment about the blind leading the blind rings true in my personal experience. our (former) unqualified barn manager advocated for my grandmother to buy me a green horse despite the fact that she was terrible rider and i had only ever taken lessons at camp. it ended with me breaking my nose, bruising three ribs, and lacerating a kidney on three occasions over three years. its ridiculously dangerous and i could have died because of her arrogance and ignorance and taking advantage of my grandmother.

I’ve had to learn the hard way. My first pony, when I was 12 years old, was a 4 year old pony, who I originally didn’t want because she was so young. Rode her twice to try her and ended up falling in love, but took her home and she threw me damn near every ride I had on her. My confidence was destroyed.
It wasn’t until I ended up in the hospital, and needing surgery, that my parents and coach decided to start looking at putting me on a new horse. I did a year lease on a 15 year old horse who taught me in much kinder ways. That horse brought me from crying looking at a cross rail to confidently going around a 3 foot hunter course, and gave me the eventing bug. He was the horse who taught me what I needed to know to get my first off the track mare when I sent him back to his owner.
Buying a green horse was the most unsafe decision my family made, but they didn’t know any better. Luckily I turned out okay and we came up with a better solution. I just hope the same thing, or worse, doesn’t have to happen to Sophie before they realize they’re heading down the wrong path.

Ah yes the old, OTTB, green horse, green rider deal. My most favorite scenario in the Equestrian world.

Listen to Raleigh! I was a beginner rider but my (not very good) instructor put me on a younger hot horse and I fell and broke my pelvis. I used to ride the older more experienced horse and nothing ever happened. As soon as i was put on that other horse i had this accident which I still feel the repercussions 1 year later.

What I don’t get is , if she’s at such an “amazing” barn with such an “amazing” trainer why can she lease/loan a school pony to her level is my question 🙈🤣

The problem have with them is the praise Gabby with everything, which really raised her ego, they make it like Gabby is never wrong which in the long run will not be good for Gabby, while with Sophie it’s only her fails and seems like Sophie will never be as good as Gabby. Sophie really needs a horse fit for her that can teach her the basics. An older horse who is broke. I had that. A 19yo learned so much then upgraded to a horse who wasnt as broke. That’s what Sophie needs.

So I was a beginner English rider. Grew up on working western horses, including cattle herding but zero jumping/english exposure. I have a good seat and sitting trot, so my trainer put me on a Thoroughbred only off the racetrack for 3 weeks to see if he could be made into a schooling pony. It kinda backfired because we immediately clicked and I ended up leading him. The reason it backfired was that he liked me and was incredibly responsive, he never refused a jump for to change gait… for me, if he didn’t like the person, he’d develop selective deafness and refuse direction. We were great for each other, but he definitely could only be ridden by someone he liked. One woman was a serious sport woman in multiple disciplines, including riding from the age of three. She couldn’t get my boy to even pick up a trot. He was brat but I loved him.

I definitely got a green horse as my first horse and I think a lot have made that mistake. Mine at least was a gelding that was pretty kind. My friend’s mom legit got an unbroke 2 year old stallion as her first horse and it went pretty terribly to say the least.
We sold that green horse and I ended up with a dead broke mare that quickly became my heart horse. She passed in 2010 and I miss her every day.
