    I drain and fill my ATF on my 13 ody every other oil change. A few years back it was hard to get my hands on Genuine Honda ATF, I was forced to use Castrol Transmax import AFT. So far no issues, It's been over 3 years and still going. I still drain and fill ATF every other oil change so I imagine that it's now mostly Transmax ATF with a little genuine Honda left, still no issues.

I have a 2015 Odyssey and bought some transmission fluid to swap out but just heard that when shops do it, they change out the ATF filter. You can (I actually did this yesterday chaging fluid in my 2011 Odyssey) -- only because I didn't watch this video first and didn't know about the fill plug--- on the 2011 anyway, the dipstick hole is VERY small-- maybe 3/8" and my funnel did not fit-- I luckily had a pump adapter (like soap dispenser pump) that you can put on quart sized bottles and it has a 1/4" hose on the outlet-- so refilled mine with this through the dip stick hole-- it would have been much faster/easier using the fill plug.

    • @rixautomotive910
      @rixautomotive910  5 років тому +5

      Pwazy Dev you may do both. While some Honda and Acura’s May have the wider dipstick, the majority of H&A dipstick tubes were narrow & skinny making it difficult to pour into without making a large mess. Out of habit I prefer to use the manufactures fill plug.

    Newbie question…What’s the difference between a trans flush vs trans fluid change? Or is the same thing?

    • @ahyungrocks5509
      @ahyungrocks5509 Рік тому

      Flush means replacing all fluids. Fluid change (AKA drain and fill) only replacing about 1/4 the total capacity.

    • @michaelmaynard4387
      @michaelmaynard4387 Рік тому

      I found this on an Odyssey Club web site to help explain the difference. Long story short, you don't want to do a 'flush' as it forces fluid through the transmission. A 1x drain-and-fill should be all most vehicles need. You can also do a 3X drain-and-fill (spaced about a week apart) to get most all fluid replaced while letting the new fluid clean the system.
      ----------------------
      "A "drain-and-fill" is exactly what it sounds like; the ATF drain plug is removed and the fluid is allowed to drain out with nothing but gravity helping it along. Once the ATF has stopped leaking out of the drain hole, the plug is replaced and the transmission is refilled with fresh ATF.
      A "flush" usually refers to a process where a machine is connected to the transmission and pressurized ATF is used to push or flush out all of the old fluid that is in the transmission housing and torque converter. Other types of machines simply use the vehicle's ATF pump to draw new fluid in and push the old fluid out.
      Honda does not recommend doing a flush on their automatic transmissions - not even to their own fully trained mechanics at the dealership. No mechanic who has any familiarity with Honda transmissions should be hooking it up to a fluid exchange machine. If you take your Ody to a Honda dealership for ATF service, they will be doing a drain-and-fill. That is the process that is prescribed in the service manual that the mechanics use.
      The only ATF replacement procedure approved by Honda is the drain-and-fill. Most shops that I am aware of will only do the process once and will quote prices for doing it once. Doing one drain-and-fill will replace about 45% of the ATF contained in the transmission. If you wanted the process to be completed three times (which would get you up to the 85% new fluid state), you would have to specifically ask for that to take place. That could potentially get pricey, but if the ATF has been neglected in the past, or if you are already experiencing problems, it is still far cheaper than any repair.
      The ATF drain-and-fill is generally considered a regular maintenance item and that is why it is generally offered as a single time service. Doing a triple drain-and-fill is a more drastic intervention that is usually indicated by the presence of problems in the transmission's performance or knowledge that the maintenance has been neglected in the past and a fresh start is needed to catch up."

I would maybe consider doing this at 150,000 to 200,000 milies --- I believe those filters have bypasses in them so when clogged they do nothing.

    Trans holds about 8 quarts so draining less than half doesn't do much good. Contrary to all the alarmists out there, these transmissions can be safely flushed without removing coolant lines, the better shops have a machine to do this (old fluid is sucked out of the dipstick tube and replaced with new fluid). My fluid still looked good at 50k miles and there was nothing on the magnet.

      According to my Honda dealer, Honda published an advisory NOT to flush this tranny. The dealer will only drain and fill 3.3 quarts at a time based on the advisory.

      Yes they do that because they don't want the liability, but if you keep up with regular service (generally 30k miles complete flush for lightly driven sedan) these transmissions will last a very long time. I also replaced the inline filter with a Magnefine

      If they fluid is old (>100k) it's better to just leave it alone and run the trans into the ground. Flushing abused transmissions can do more harm than good

      @@cguy6934 Just changed the 2016 Honda Odyssey transmission oil, why the oil I changed out is only 2L? I measured it with a mineral water bottle.

      Each drain and fill only replaces about 1/3 of the total fluid in the system so that’s about right if you do it every 30k. It’s better to spread the D&F’s out so you don’t shock the system with a bunch of new ATF, the detergents could dislodge crud and clog a valve if you do it all at once.
