  • This is a demo of the Tech 21 PSA-1 vs PSA 2.0. I couldn't find any direct comparison for these two online so I picked them both up and made this demo :) I hope it helps your decision making process.
I recorded these units directly into my Focusrite Clarett 4pre interface using the same Mogami (out) & Monster (in) cables. I used a prerecorded loop played into each unit to keep the source material exactly the same for each clip.
Aside from level matching each clip in post, no processing was done to the audio aside from a Waves L1 limiter plugin on the Master bus in Ableton to catch peaks. ***Be cautious as the levels jump quite a bit between some settings! The first set has a little delay and reverb from Ableton to give you context (00:57). The second half of the demo is dry (08:57).
This is by no means a specification video, nor is it a demonstration of talent. I'm a drummer with a strum stick (Traveler EG-1). That is the extent of it ;) I just wanted to show how very close (if not identical) these two preamps can sound.
I hope you enjoy it and thanks for your time!

Thank you for this. Would you ever consider doing a comparison with simple chugging power chords?
I'm noticing that the PSA2 pedal is distorting completely differently to the Pro Tools Sansamp PSA plugin.
Unfortunately I think the plugin sounds miles better for palm muted power chords for example. Because turning the Buzz knob up all the way on the plugin does some kind of black magic with distorting the the upper harmonics that the PSA 2 guitar pedal isn't doing
I'd really love to know if the ORIGNAL PSA-1 rack unit chugs the upper harmonics like the plugin does and the PSA-2 doesn't.. or if the plugin is truly one of a kind

Thanks for doing this. The V2 sounds more congested/close. The difference is notable between track PSA-1 track at 2:42 and the V2 starting at 2:50. . . or between the 19 JAZZ settings. Not sure if Tech21 is using different components for the later model. The same transistors typem can sound different in different size packaged, coming from different manufacturers etc. The V2 is a bit of a muddy-mess & a NO from me, sad. Another audio product that became a downgrade in a later version

The 2.0 isn't as tight in the low end, which makes it sound bottom heavy to me.
