Hey thanks for sharing your great vid my friend! I was on a Hamburg Sud ship in 2014 from Australia to the US and enjoyed every minute of it and would like to go to Europe next year via the Suez! Ships and oceans are always in my heart!
I really do enjoy watching you videos, thank you so much for posting them....I have always had an interest in traveling aboard a container ship, you seem to have sparked my interest once again, this time I would really like follow up and actually take a long trip aboard one....I see where you suggest a travel agency, any particular ones you would recommend? I live near San Francisco and would love to take a ship from here.....so many questions for you....How do they work out the food/eating for your voyage? do you pay daily? do you eat with the crew? are you allowed to travel throughout the ship freely? Are you allowed to spend time with the crew? I would love to hear their stories and understand what brought them to this work/life style or way of making a living....sooooo many questions....Are you allowed to have a satellite phone of your own? Do they provide toilet paper?hahahaha.....I never said my questions were all smart ones....are all the rooms as nice as the ones you have shown? are there certain rooms just set aside for quests? Do you encounter any other quests? How does the crew treat you? ok I will stop for now.....Again thanks! oh I am so interested in trying this out.....boy hood dreams....God Speed my Friend.......
There's more info on the blog (link in description) all food is included, and someone will come clean your room, replace toilet paper etc. There is a laundry on the ship where you can wash/dry clothes. revise facilities vary by ship. The travel agents will have more info on the boat you get. I booked this trip with Slow Travel Experience. www.langsamreisen.de they were very helpful I felt. but shop around, the different agents will prob have deals with different shipping lines so different routes will be available.
As for other guests. It will vary. this boat had space for more, and a separate room for passengers to socialise in, but there were no other passengers! My boat across Atlantic had one other passenger but no separate passenger lounge (smaller boat). So it will vary ship by ship.
It varies but the general guide is probably $100 US a day. Shop around though as some agents will offer the same voyages cheaper than others even for the same boat and cabin. Pacific crossing was actually cheaper for me than Atlantic even though it's longer, I think because the Atlantic route is so popular.
BEWARE headphone wearers! The sounds switch without warning from a quiet voice, to the engine room (loud), to the wind blowing on deck, etc... Otherwise, it's a nice video.
Sorry, hadn't thought of that although this was made with just s compact camera and windows movie maker so i will put part of the blame on that. Glad you enjoyed the video, it was a great experience. I wondered if people will be able to do it again after lockdown?
I wish you had talked about the meals on board. Also did you use the gym facilities? were there any gym facilities? During the meals did you meet the other passengers and/or the crew? Any games played on board? Stuff like card games to jogging around the ship.
David Lp there is some info on meal times on my blog. www.noflytripping.com there were no other passengers on this trip. There was one on my Atlantic crossing so we played lots of card games. There was a very basic gym and a pool filled from sea water but I didn't use it as Pacific was not warm at that time of year!
Thank you for the prompt reply. I'll check your blog right away. Any were you able to at least hang out with some of the crew members while crossing the Pacific? Being alone for so many days had to be a bit lonesome.
John McLaurin there's a bit more about how I booked this trip here noflytripping.com/freighter-cruise/ used a German agent called SlowTravelExperience. I used another German agent to arrange Atlantic crossing.
Well as a matter of fact I basically did. If you check out my other videos there is one a few months later that I took from the US back to Europe to finish my trip. Would I do it again? Would depend on the reason. Probably not just in and of itself but if it was part of a bigger trip and I was trying to avoid flying or I was in need of a bit of a break then why not!
Is it possible to just contact a shipping firm and buy a journey on a container ship, or is there another criteria which has to be filled also. Great films, really enjoyed them.
You are probably best going through a travel agency. There are quite a few if you google them. I went with two German ones. You can try contacting some companies direct. I have heard that can work, but you aren't there priority so it might just be easier to use the travel agent.
goodfilmful Not really, after a year of travelling it was nice to have some quiet time to reflect and the fact that they set me up to be able to send text only emails and get an update on UK news meant I didn't feel too cut off and could keep in touch with people. I think sometimes they will even let you use their satellite phones to call someone (for a price!)
Noah Kim Goldwasser No other passengers for this trip. I got the impression going East across the Pacific is not a popular route. Going West from the States/Canada I think there is more likely to be company. The ship certainly had at least two other cabins that could be used by passengers.
It's forbidden to work on the ship, at least with the company that I'm going with (Slow Travel). I think you can't really find companies that will let you work on the ship
Hon , this is your grandmother. Watch for the ends of the boat. Your uncle Morty was on a ship and looked off the end and was never seen again. Hugs and kisses.
I’m preparing a trip across the pacific & watched your vid for prep. Thank you
How did you organize the trip? I’m
Having a hard time
So I used a specialist travel agent, but i suspect there is no way of doing this now at least until covid has gone.
I love tankers and cargo ships, so your video was nice to watch!

A Well Edited & Interesting Video ~ THX for putting this all together!
Very neat! I hope to do this sometime in the near future
Need to get a wind sock for your Mic.
I imagine that one would sleep very well on this ship. The cabin and bed look very inviting.
Where is the toilet??
Awesome video pal

Wow thanks for upload I didn't even know you could travel like this! I'm curious to know how much it would cost

O R Like traveling by train. It is about the journey and experience, not just from getting from point A to B.
Great video
I've never heard of this before...just wow
That thumping of the engine, yeh brings back memories

i imagine that three spaces between every single word is even weirder ( or is it more weird ? )
How much are you paying for these trips? From states to europe??
I'm going from Belgium to New York and it costs me 1625 euro (one way)
You're a dead ringer for Rich Hall.
