  • Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced his election pledge to make all teenagers either spend a year in the military or doing unpaid work in the community.
And now Foreign Office Minister, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, hasn't ruled out a fine for adults if their teenagers refuse to take part.
She said the young people volunteering for the military would not be sent to fight. And that they would be taught practical and soft skills.
If young people don't want to do this is it fair to fine the parents?

There is no way my son is being cannon fodder. Volunteering is not volunteering if compulsory . I come from a military background. What a crock of shite. My son got his career planned .

What a surprise someone who owns a farm agreeing that young people should be forced to work on it for free.
Let's not discuss the 14yr Tory record, let's discuss some pie in the sky idea that's never going to happen.

Wilfred is an employer. He could easily set up a training programme. Why doesn’t he do it if he thinks young people need to be introduced to the world of work?

Wilfred needs to step up his parenting, recruitment & managerial skills too. My kids aren’t entitled and I’ve employed young people with great attitudes. I’ve loved supporting them & coaching them and giving them skills they need to get to the next step of their careers, and they’ve shown their appreciation by being loyal hardworking and conscientous.

@@AnnaP-uh3mc I am a parent also. The generation that are just starting work are doing ok from what I can see. They were somewhat flummoxed by lockdown but have come out of it all the more determined than ever to do well in life.

I do volunteer work with teenagers and most of them are reallly great and well meaning. The way they are being demonized is absolutely disgusting.

Why is this country only punishment, punishment, punishment?? Why not incentivize people to make a contribution towards work, careers etc?

How can you fine another adult for something an 18 year old, (legally an adult) does or doesn't do?
    Ludicrous.

Brexit Britain, from live and work in any EU Country to a Brexiteer forced labour camp in less than 5 years. An amazing achievement, well done Leave voters.

They can’t fine parents actually because at 18 they’re an adult so in the eyes of the law they’re no longer the parent’s responsibility.

OMG, I am absolutely lost for words with all of the callers. And as for Wilfred, there are no words, he would have your children down the mines or up sweeping chimneys if he could.
    God help the UK 😢😢😢

Its annoying that people of a certain generation demand respect from the younger generation, even tho they seem to view the younger ones are all potential criminals! !

I wonder how it would be possible to fine the parents of an adult for refusing to complete National Service. If it’s possible, watch out everyone or we’ll ALL be settling our over-18s debts. Some of these TV discussions take some very silly turns.

Both my my adult kids live at home and my sons partner. They work and would like their own homes but its too expensive, whats the point of struggling to pay bills when we all get on and live independent lives and have a family life.

I've two sons 13 and 14 and I for one think it would be a good idea for National service it would definitely help with self discipline and mixing with others and not forgetting actually strengthening our defences there's a lot of threats heading our way we need to look after our country. A lot of countries all have National service. Do we want to be totally defenceless or be able to look after ourselves

Give them less benefits if they are not working and refuse national service.
If they are in higher education they should be given a choice to volunteer for weekend work that is not compulsory.
If they are working they can just do a weekend a month. Its only 12 weekends a year.
The 30,000 that vaulenteer for the military still have to pass a test.
They should start this at 16-17 so they get life skills. After the 12mths given choice to stay on and make a career.

    • @bexproctor360
      @bexproctor360 Місяць тому

So surely that means that voluntary work becomes mandatory? So there's no voluntary work, they're just working for free .
